  • Join us for a walk in Plymouth City Centre, Devon, UK. Our walk starts in Drake Circus Shopping Centre. We explore Plymouth City Centre before heading to Plymouth Hoe and finishing our walk by Smeatons Tower with fantastic views over Plymouth Sound.
Plymouth is a port city in Devon, South West England, approximately 37 miles south-west of Exeter and 190 miles south-west of London. Enclosing the city are the mouths of the river Plym and river Tamar, which are naturally incorporated into Plymouth Sound to form a boundary with Cornwall.
Plymouth is known for its maritime heritage and historic Barbican district with narrow, cobbled streets. Sutton Harbour is home to the National Marine Aquarium. Also in the harbour are several marinas and a fish market, the Plymouth Fisheries. The Mayflower Steps are where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World in 1620. Establishing Plymouth Colony, the second English settlement in what is now the United States of America.
Plymouth has a post-war shopping area in the city centre with substantial pedestrianisation. At the west end of the zone inside a grade II listed building is the Pannier Market that was completed in 1959. In terms of retail floorspace, Plymouth is ranked in the top five in the South West and 29th nationally. The Tinside Pool is situated at the foot of the Hoe and became a grade II listed building in 1998 before being restored to its 1930s look for £3.4 million.
The annual British Firework Championships are held in August, which attracts tens of thousands of people across the waterfront.
Plymouth Hoe is a large south-facing open public space, with wonderful views of Plymouth Sound, Drake's Island, and across the Hamoaze to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall.
Plymouth Hoe has a long broad tarmacked promenade which serves as a spectacular military parade ground and is often used for displays by Plymouth-based Royal Navy, Royal Marines, the Army garrison, as well as for travelling funfairs and open-air concerts.
A prominent landmark on the Hoe is Smeaton's Tower. This is the upper portion of John Smeaton's Eddystone Lighthouse, which was originally built on the Eddystone Rocks, located 14 miles to the south, in 1759. It was dismantled in 1877 and moved, stone by stone, to the Hoe where it was re-erected. Smeaton's Tower has been a Grade I-listed building since 1954. It is open for visitors, who may climb 93 steps, including steep ladders, to the lantern room, and observe Plymouth Sound and the city.
The city's main theatre is Theatre Royal Plymouth, presenting large-scale West End shows and smaller works as well as an extensive education and outreach programme. Plymouth Pavilions stages music concerts, basketball matches and stand-up comedy.
Plymouth Leander is the most successful swimming club in Great Britain along with Plymouth Diving Club.
Plymouth is an important centre for watersports, especially scuba diving and sailing. The Port of Plymouth Regatta is one of the oldest regattas in the world, and has been held regularly since 1823. In September 2011, Plymouth hosted the America's Cup World Series for nine days.
Plymouth is home to Plymouth Argyle F.C. who play in the third tier of English football league known as Football League One. The team's home ground is called Home Park. Other sports clubs include Plymouth Albion Plymouth Raiders and Plymouth Gladiators. Plymouth Albion Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club that was founded in 1875.

Great video. Born here in 1979, raised here, still live here and I love it. Its a shame there aren't videos of the city centre in the 1980's when it was beating packed and vibrant. The town centre these days is looking old, stale and run down. Hopefully the council work going on right now will provide improvements.

Thanks for the upload . Shame to see how the city centre has declined it had so much more to it in the 90’s. Drake Circus has swallowed up most of the known retailers and as you get down towards Cornwall Street and Armada Way you can see the deprivation.
The council need to get a grip it’s getting worse year on year .

I really appreciate the pedestrianisation of Plymouth City centre, so much nicer for walkers than many other towns and cities. But.... after 'Drake's circus' which has the same shops and unhealthy eating places as you find all over Britain what a sad looking array of extremely unhealthy 'restaurants' and wind swept concrete areas with shrubby trees., spindly trees and others which appear to be dead. Then there's run down areas, concrete dug up and closed shop space. There appears to be no public transport....only cars. A lot of wide open concreted over space - certainly a wind trap. I imagine this place at night would be insalubrious, even dangerous. As the walk progresses we find nicer, older trees but the windswept nature of the place gets worse and more and more boarded up shops. Then there's a horrible metal 'monument' in the middle of a roundabout. What is it for? Then more fenced off areas with empty shop spaces 'to let'. There's certainly a lot of walking space to give you plantar fascitis. It is all the same...concrete and wide pavements....nothing original, quirky original or organic....it looks 'planned' and plonked down, as it was, in the 1950s ....that the trees are not mature is scary....was this expanse of concrete treeless in the past? More fenced off areas with piles of earth and holes in the ground....Then we reach a rather Ceaucescu open space with nothing in it....quite 'soviet'. Adopted by 'the youth' for skate boarding A tower block looms in the distance. It would appear that no one lives in this part of the city. There are no food shops for fruit and veg etc. We reach a main road, with through traffic it would appear and signs of public transport...a bus or two. Along this main thoroughfare in the distance is an old church and nearer what seems to be a modern imitation of an old building and a tower block and another 'soviet' style wide open space with skateboarders. At last a (small) patch of grass. This city doesn't seem to appreciate 'nature' so even this small strip of grass is nice to see. Then we reach a water feature and at last a couple of mature trees. Quite nice. But brief for now we are in a car park and then, returning? theres a water feature ...fountains and few nice looking buildings. The walk starts to be more interesting, more greenery and no shops and nicer buildings until we reach a long high blank wall ( what is it?), we cross another motor road and reach what I know to be the Hoe, which is quite nice except for the enormous concrete monument and the even more enormous area of tarmac .. . But at last we reach grass and a beautiful view of Plymouth sound, a view which escaped the planners.....Barbarian Abercrombie and his ilk were not able to destroy and plan this view away.. Thank you for this interesting video.
