  • Located in the county of Tyne and Wear, and around 12 miles southeast of Newcastle, is the city of Sunderland.
The area that comprises modern-day Sunderland is a composite of three original settlements on the Banks of the River Wear: Monkwearmouth, north of the river, Bishopwearmouth, south of the river and a fishing village initially known as 'Soender-land'. This was situated on the eastern side of the parish of Bishopwearmouth in what is now the East End. Its name evolved into Sunderland, and was granted a charter in 1179 by Hugh Pudsey, Bishop of Durham.
During the centuries that followed, Sunderland slowly grew as a port. According to records, ships were built on the River Wear from as early as 1346. Later on, towards the end of the 14th century, Sunderland became an exporter of coal. Another early industry was salt panning, which started in 1589. Large vats of seawater were heated using low quality coal, whilst the higher quality coal was traded via the port. As water evaporated, the salt remained.
Other industries that followed over the centuries included glass-making, limestone, pottery and rope-making, which were transported via the port whilst expanding shipbuilding opportunities. In 1796, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the first Wearmouth Bridge was constructed. This was the second major bridge to have been constructed from cast iron (the first being The Iron Bridge in Shropshire). This was reconstructed in the 1850s by Robert Stephenson. It was again rebuilt from 1927 to 1929, which is the bridge seen today.
During the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, demand for wooden ships grew significantly. Sunderland grew as a result, and by 1814 there were over 20 active shipyards, growing to 76 by 1840. At this point, Sunderland was the biggest shipbuilding port in the world. The focus would soon turn from wood to metal, with the first iron ship being launched from Wearside in 1852. The last wooden ship launched in 1880 and soon after, steel was the material of choice. Sunderland's shipyards eventually closed in 1988.
Sunderland is represented in sport by Sunderland Association Football Club. Having formed in 1879, they are nicknamed 'The Black Cats'. They play their home games at The Stadium of Light in the Monkwearmouth area of the city north of the river. This replaced their former ground, Roker Park, in 1997. Their rivalry with Newcastle United has been historically fierce, with the Tyne-Wear derby drawing intense atmosphere. The roots of the rivalry stretch all the way back to the Civil War of the 17th century, and the Jacobite Risings of the 17th and 18th century. In both cases, Newcastle and Sunderland were on opposing sides. Newcastle were on the side of the Royalists and the Hanoverians while Sunderland were on the side of the Parliamentarians and the Jacobites. Colloquially, people from Sunderland are referred to as Mackems.
Famous people from Sunderland include musician Bryan Ferry and footballers Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford.

Saw recently an article that said Sunderland is one of the best places to live and work in the UK 😃. Do you live in sunderland yourself or you just visiting for a walk ?

I was just visiting, so couldn't offer an opinion on that to be fair.
