Planting Out and Seed Sowing Time - But First Lets Have a Quick Fire and a Spade v Mallet Assessment

  • Plenty of seed sowing and planting out at the end of May, but first let's have a (quick) fire to get rid of some twigs. It's time to fill the plot(s) with seeds and seedlings, but first we need to consider breaking up the soil after a quick assessment of a spade versus a mallet. We go inside the new shed to check out the new allotment maps, and see the first view of my sunflower room. Busy times, but I'm getting there.

Thanks - it's been a busy time with getting the new plot up to scratch but I'll soon be all planted up, all I have to worry about then is watering it all! Cheers

Needs gypsum to,break up the clods plus lots of organic material. Compost dug in with mulch on top.

Thanks for the tip, I'm on a budget and I do my own composting but supplies are limited, this first season on the new plot is mainly assessing the situation

Hi Dave lucky you can have a fire thats something we miss our coucil banned it
You certainly have been busy and potatoes will help break that ground up nicely for you , you have plenty of scope to grow whatever you like now.

I don't have many fires but they are useful sometimes, our allotment committee are quite sensible in terms of rules. Oh, I've been so busy but time now to relax a bit (and water a lot), give it a month and it'll all be green and lush (hopefully). Now I have more space I can do some different things like the sunflower room, hopefully that will work out. Cheers

Excellent job Dave and yes potatoes and squash or bush beans 🫘 would work for sure. I swear I’m only doing big seeds next year 🤣🤣 enough faffing about with tiny ones. Everyone seems to have germination issues including myself 🤷‍♀️, and you could always buy a tomato plant or two. Have a fantastic and fun week at the allotment, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Thanks, the plot is almost full, just the watering to worry about now, its been dry for a couple of weeks and no rain in the forecast either. It'll keep me busy though. Have a great week. Cheers

@@myrustygarden Just seen the weather forecast maps and seems like the rest of Europe has all of Britains rain at the minute. Hope some turns up for you soon

You've done a lot of work this month. Great plan for the new plot planting big seeds. Hopefully their roots will help brake up the soil for you. Unless you are wanting to save seed, cross pollination of sweetcorn is not a problem.
My tomatoes are not much bigger than yours. I planted seed very late this year. I do have the advantage of a poly tunnel to grow them in. Have recently noticed volunteer tomato plants growing. I get them every year and always let a couple grow. And they do grow fast enough to give me a harvest. Right now they are about the same size as my planted seedlings. So don't give up on yours just yet.

Thanks. Ah right, thanks for the sweetcorn info. I'm not quite giving up on the tomatoes yet, but comparing to previous years they are behind, better late than never I guess. Cheers

Dave, another fire at the plot and still no marshmallows? But if it only burned for 3 minutes then I guess you would only have a slightly warmed marshmallow.
Great use of the mobile boards and it looks like you are filling everything up nicely. You've been a very busy bee. Loving what you did with the windows, makes me think about looking around for some used ones myself.

The fire was so quick, I couldn't believe it. No time to do anything but watch. I had a bit of catching up to do to be honest what with the new plot clearance, but in a great position now. The windows thing may only be temporary for this year but it's proving quite useful. Cheers
