Clearing the New Allotment Plot

  • I recently took over a new allotment plot, the first job - tidy it up and get it ready for planting. It took me about 5 days over a 3 week period, but I got there, and here's a video of how I did it. It's a journey of discovery including a detailed tour of the new caravan, my encounters with weed controlling membrane, plenty of digging and of course a sore back.
    Enjoy

Loved your vid. Like the way you told us what you were going to do then you time lapsed it and came back for a quick chat then on with the next bit. Superb job. You held my attention and that’s hard to do. I turn so many videos off because I’m bored 31:44 right at the start. Excellent work on plot and vid

Dig around the roots and then put a chain through and old tire rim and then wrap the chain the tree then onto a truck javk and jack it out. I watched my friend do a few tree that way.

Very very impressive... and once dug you can then go "no dig" without the cardboard/compost game. Grass paths brilliant and great compost grass mowings. Big stump... yep I'd have to got rid of it too (gardening OCD!)... GREAT WORK...exhausting just watching😂😂

Thankyou, although I'm not strictly no dig , I only dig over when necessary if I've left weeds too long in a certain bed. I've got some landscaping to do on the new plot over winter but for the 6 months I've had it now that early work did the trick. Cheers

your mounds of weeds, If you could stack it somewhere upside down and make a pile and then cover it with the dreaded membrane and put some manure in between the layers and exclude the light it will make great loam for potting compost if you want John Innes its 7parts Loam 3 parts peat(or leafmould or I use peat free these days) and 2 parts Sharp sand then add fertiliser to the required strength or you could spread it on you plot with a bit of BF&B mixed in with it.
Well done on what you've achieved

Excellent job Dave and well done! You will have to look for a new shovel if you wear this one out. Caravan is in nice shape for the age, good spot to sit and watch things grow....or a place to crash after all that digging.
Would you be able to snag a used manual push mower and use that on the grass paths? Might be easier than strimming most of it and might be able to get one cheap.

Carve the jobs up into smaller areas/jobs, that's how I maintain motivation. I find looking at the whole picture quite daunting. Get some areas done and agree with yourself to leave some small bits for later (even next year) , that's how I do it anyway. I'm sure you don't need my advice but it's how I tackle big jobs.
