Dave versus Tree - No-one Wins (Dave is sad, but two out of tree ain't bad)

  • This week at the allotment I plant some fruit trees and attempt to move another. But mistakes have been made and I'm not too happy about it, more disappointed in myself really.
I was in two minds whether to put this video out as it's not quite the upbeat, positive vibe I try and get out there in my videos, but it's important to show that not everything always goes to plan.
I could also maybe get more views and clicks if I'd have named this video "Allotment Disaster - it's all gone wrong", or "Allotment fail - I give up" or such like but that's not what I'm about either, I like to offer more than the video title suggests - not less.
Anyway, enough of the over-analysis, if you want to see a man get slightly disappointed in himself over a tree, then this is the allotment video for you!
    Cheers - Dave
    p.s. - I'm over it now....mostly

That was a very unhappy apple tree, you done what i would have done. You were very careful, it was sickly. I wud'nt be suprised with a bit of pruning and T L C it could come good yet. I've seen stranger things happen😀. Nature finds a way.

The tree didn't look healthy root wise which probably explains the rocking. You've freed the tree from a slow death.

If it was a grafted tree then the root may have rotted due to being too low in the soil. I’d plant it anyway what have you got to lose by trying (😂😂 unless it’s already 🔥 wood). Fingers crossed Dave 🤞🤞. Stay warm and have a super week, Ali ⛄️⛄️⛄️🇨🇦

Maybe that's what happened. I've had some great advice from some viewers so think I have a plan to improve its chances. It's just snowed here, nothing like what you've got I expect and it'll be gone in a couple of days but winters not over yet. Have a great week . Cheers

The tree doesn't seem to have much for a root ball on the end for being a few years old. With it being dormant right now trim it back and wait for spring and it might take off.
Congratulations on hitting 1,000 subs Dave!!

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think I'm going to trim it quite drastically in an attempt to save it, I've not given up on it yet! Thanks - it's been a few years in the making getting to 1,000 but I wouldn't have got there without my regular viewers, so thankyou for your support - hoping to do a video soon on my journey to 1k - maybe with some best bits too - so watch this space. I may even open the floor to viewers suggestions of what they consider their favourite clip, but maybe that's a bit too ambitious - we will see. Cheers

Hi Dave, the tree must have been in distress anyway. Perhaps now you have moved it the tree will florish. Good luck. Dont forget to fertilize it with seaweed and blood and bone, that will perk it up.

Thanks - like you say, it must have been a bit weak, I'm not that strong to just pull up a tree. More work on what remains this weekend weather permitting. Maybe I'll have some seaweed too, I could do with a perk up myself! Cheers

Just a quick heads up about fruit trees. Many Apple and Plum varieties are bi-annual so even if the tree is healthy it will have a 'rest' year... Secondly, if the Spring has been very cold the 'Pollinators' don't fly, Bumble Bees will fly at 8 degrees and Wasps at 12 degrees anything lower and you have very little polination. Why don't you Just buy Whips (1st year) and grow them as espaliers? Take it from me you get great cross polination and just the right amount of fruit for you family, not too much, not to little. Good luck DigDaveDig... Big Fan :)

Thanks for the information, it's been great getting tips from viewers, I'm going to take a bit of drastic action with the tree and try and take some cuttings too. The weather has been a bit weird now for a couple of years so your right this may have something to do with it. Thanks for the support. Cheers

You might be surprised - I would prune it radically - I think it will survive and prosper. If it doesn't: woodchip returns it to the soil matrix❤

Dont beet yourself up to much. The fact the tree was rocking befour you started was not a good sighn for the future of the tree.
My sugestion moving forward would be to saw the top off the tree below all presant branches leaving just the trunk. Saw at an angle so the cut can shed rain. Drastick I know. This should give the roots time to establish without having to support a big tree and leavs above. If it survives in late spring early summer the trunk will start to sprout new shoots. Choose your strongest one or two new shoots and remove all others. Most modern apples are grafted so Dont let anything grow from ground leval as this will be from the root stock and not the apple you want. Good luck 🤞
