  • This week on the allotment I'm relocating some daffodils and after finding an old tool on the new plot, I ask myself "What does this tool do and how does it work?"
    Maybe you know the answer, maybe you've seen one before, maybe you've got more common sense than me, either way let me know what you think and if I've got it completely wrong!

    Hope the daffs are ok only 2 choices live or die 🤦🏼‍♀️. Glad your snow is all gone we still have a wee bit on the ground but it’s due rain for another week. 😂😂 the things we find but allotment archeology is part of the fun. Have a fantastic week and stay dry, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦

      I should get a good idea if they're going to be ok on the weekend, fingers crossed. I've still got a bit of archaeology to go so who knows what I'll find. Hope it dries out soon for you, cheers

    Very interesting Dave but I don't think this is a bulb planter as most of those have some sort of cup on the end to pull a plug of soil out. I am leaning toward some type of mounting bracket/rod, push the circle end down to ground level and with the angle piece and it will be stable. Now either a pole sits in the "foot" part as a base and gets secured to the top bracket bit by zip ties or rope. Put two flag poles in and it should look like a Y. Is there anything under the white bit/tape part just under the handle bit?
    Search for "sign t stake" and it looks similar, but who knows exactly what this is.

      Hi - that is a very interesting idea - I've searched for sign t stake and I can see what you mean, I don't think there are any hidden features you can't see - but I'll triple check. I assumed it was a tool , but like you said maybe its a static kind of device, we may never know but I'm grateful for your new lead of investigation. I will of course report back if anything new comes to light. Cheers

    You could just be rediscovering what the original maker did. That being, it seemed like a good idea at the time. I highly doubt it would be much use for compost either. You could push it into the side of a heap and wiggle it up and down. But would it really be more useful than a fork?
    It would break any hardpan, if your area has a heavy clay soil. So it could help a little with root vegetables, but you'd be as well just double digging it once. Then avoid standing on your beds, and mulch with compost, hay etc.

      It's pretty good as a small hole maker, it's just that bit near the end that perplexes me, like you say I might be just finding out what the previous owner already knew. Maybe we will never know. Cheers

    Dave id say its a compost aerator

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I can see that - maybe it is, though not sure how the foot rest thing would come into it, I'll test it out on that job sometime, see if its effective for that. Maybe it's multi function, maybe its just a long metal pole with bits on sent to annoy me. Cheers

    Dave...am thinking its for long rooted veg...put the seed in the hole its pulled out and the spike bit has loosend the deep soil ..say for parsnips or carrots..but not realy got a clue.but new sub recently and enjoying the content your putting out

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, that is a good thought, it would explain the design of the end bit which like you say goes deeper and makes it easier for longer roots, let's see come parsnip sowing time, I'll do some with and some without. Welcome on board, glad you're liking the videos, and thanks for the feedback. Cheers

    Oh we have to find out what this is.......intriguing 🤨🤔😏
    At first look ,i thought for making holes but it does'nt rotate. Then i thought making holes driving pegs.
    You have it right way up and that step is diffenetly to push down on. Hope i sleep tonight, things like that get me, have to know how things work.
    Spring will be beautiful on your plot!

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's interesting isn't it, I initially thought it should rotate but it doesn't do that easily, I've got a fair few ideas from viewers and I'll keep thinking, but we may never know. Hopefully the daffodils will survive and We will get some colour soon. Cheers

    What an interesting thing, could it be a line marker? The circular bit to hold the string then up through the next bit. My dad would have known but hes not about anymore. It was bending alot as you were using it so i don't think dibber/planter , compost turner maybe but seems quite flimsy for either. Good luck hunting it down.

      It intrigued me to be honest, just couldn't work it out, I'll have a look around on the internet on your suggestion and have a play with some string next time I'm down the plot. Thanks for the feedback

      Like a fishing rod rest ? hmmm interesting, I'd assumed it was allotment / gardening related - maybe it's not at all - Thanks for the suggestion

    Is it not a weed puller? Or I think you put the spike into firm ground, and the round hole is for the bottle of wine (or can of beer if you are a luddite) and the tray/platform above is for laying your kitkat on. Simple 😂

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Anita - you might be onto something there, it does pull a chunk of soil out, I'll try it on a dandelion or something on the weekend. Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'll try it out with some snacks and drinks too, just for research purposes you understand. Haha

  • @MrLaking123

    it's just a homemade bulb planter the crossbar at the bottom is just to strengthen the hole part otherwise it would just bend back

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Maybe so, but I'm asking myself why would you have to have a perfect circle attached rather than just a line to form the other part of the triangle, I guess circles have more strength so you may be right. Maybe we will never know but I'm taking on board any suggestion I get. Thanks for your comment. Cheers

    • @DigDaveDig
      @DigDaveDig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It just doesn't rotate easily , or if it's supposed to then it could have been designed better. I thought it should rotate when I first saw it but it's just too hard to rotate that I don't think it works that way. Maybe I'm just not doing it right, I'll keep guessing, cheers
