Chilli Seed Sowing and Germination Results - What Does Work and What Doesn't?

  • Let's have a quick allotment update to show you what's happening at the allotment and then see how my seed sowing three weeks ago turned out. I've sowed some sweet peppers, some aubergines, and some chilli seeds, plus as usual I'm experimenting with a few things, find out what works and what doesn't. Do chilli seeds need heat to germinate? Can you grow chilli plants from chilli flakes?
    Plus the chilli seedling that never needs watering! (I've basically made a very simple terrarium but that doesn't sound so exciting)
    Also when you discover some incorrect information has been issued on gaseous exchange in plants - there's only one thing for it - a public apology
    Cheers Dave x

    I had the same fun fixing a shed roof on another plot on my site on my own!

      I guess it's fun of some sort, a learning experience anyway :)

    A fast way to test viability of seeds is to use a plastic take away box with lid. Place damp kitchen towel inside folded. Within the folds place seeds. Wait between 5 to 7days. I purchased some bird's eye chilli's from a spice store just recently, and did this test and it was positive. Have planted 12 seeds. Many commercial (supermarket) fruit and veg are F1 and seeds are not viable.

      I might give this a go next time, good luck with your seeds, and thanks for the tip. Cheers

    Ahh yes, the good ole hold the wood up with your head and drop the screw....such a classic. If you had another length of wood that you could use that as a dead man to wedge between the floor and rafter of the club house it might save that headache.
    Very nice germination on the peppers and a nice selection as well. Going a bit spicy again this year I see.

      what I showed was the day 1 lowlights of the shed fixing, by day 2 I'd got my head together , got a bit more organised and come up with a prop, and a proper plan, that being said whatever I was trying to put up there did not make it to the final version, it's all sorted now and you'll probably see more in a shed fix special in a month or so's time. Really pleased with the germination, hope my luck lasts with pumpkins etc later in the year. Though this is finally the year of the more than average sized aubergine - I can feel it ;)

    I do like the jam jar idea! Your shed repair looks about my standard DIY ability. Have you found out what your mystery tool is yet Dave?

      I got there in the end with my DIY ;) no solid leads yet on the tool but I'm still trying to work it out, any breakthroughs and I'll make sure I do an update. Cheers

    😂😂😂 omg Dave that made me laugh at your expense sorry. But the rest looks amazing. I’m same I don’t sow a lot at this time because I don’t have a growlight room 😅 like some people. Great job on germination, happy growing, Ali 🌦️🇨🇦

    I was yelling at the screen but you didn't hear me 😂 🌱 Love the jar idea!

      @DigDaveDig  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha , I was yelling at the screen too! I'm looking forward to seeing how the bigger jar/vase works out, and how long they can actually stay in there before the water escapes or they get too big for the amount of soil, we will see.

      @@the_little_potager I saw that when I was having a look around on the subject, it's quite interesting isn't it? I doubt mine is big enough and is a lot simpler, but I'm both surprised and pleased its worked so far. I may give a much bigger one a go sometime
