Oh man, those photos of Babbage's in its heyday with wall-to-wall Sega and Nintendo shelves really takes me back. We didn't have Babbage's out here in Nevada but we had Electronics Boutique and Walden Software. What a magical time, when news traveled slow and surprises awaited during every trip to the mall. I wish I had picked up a Neo Geo in the early 2000's when prices were low. I had never seen a home version growing up but I remember the eye-popping price lists in the "Chips & Bits" ads in magazines.

Those were great times, indeed! I worked for Babbage's from 1989-1995. I was 17 when I started there part-time and still in high school. Made it all the way to store manager of the Haywood Mall locatio in Greenville, SC. Still the most fun job I've ever had.

Neo Geo stuff tends to constantly be on the rise price wise. I have a box of MVS carts in my garage (the carts that the arcade hardware used) that I got for pretty cheap quite a few years ago that are worth way more now. I really like Neo Geo games and I still play them to this day. Really great fun games with unique graphics and gameplay

No need for any mod to any NEO-GEO console to play any game cart from any region, they are not region-centric at all. The region is dictated by the BIOS, and the cart will run in whatever region it is told to by the BIOS. Cartridges are 100% indentical internally no matter what region they sold in, only the sticker and box art varied. It was actually fairly common to see US and Euro region carts that have the US/Euro cart sticker placed right over the top of the Japanese sticker, and that is exactly how SNK sent them out. Nam 1975 and Ninja Combat are perfect examples of this, but a few others did that.
The UniBIOS does allow you to switch regions, but it isn't needed. And some games even have the ability to switch regions in the options menu on home console.

I got my AES with a set of games a little over 10 years ago off eBay.
Paid $435 after shipping. At the time I thought that was a lot; but the system & games were in great condition.
Love the system and it’s got some great games. But as I saw someone say on a message board: You don’t collect games for Neo Geo, you invest in them.

    • @Forever8Bit

That was a great buy and a great value! Yes, they are a lot like an investment. They've never really taken a nose dive since the launch all those years back. I think it will be interesting to see how contemporary games change in value over the years ahead. Something tells me they won't age as gracefully in terms of value. Time will tell. :)

Neo Geo will always hold a special place in my heart. I was lucky enough to have it way back when, and I absolutely loved it. And being the only one in town with it meant that my house was often a gathering spot.
Makes me miss the days when we still did stuff like get together on the couch and pass the controllers back and forth. Nowadays, it's all "See you on B-net" or "Hit me up on PSN".
To this day, a Neo Geo game remains my favorite fighting game. Fatal Fury Real Bout 2. I love that game so much, I've bought it 4 times. The AES cartridge, the Neo Geo CD release, the Battle Archives version on PS2, and the PSN release on PS4 (which transferred over to my PS5).
Some of my other favorites were Shock Troopers 1 and 2, Real Bout Special, Mark of the Wolves, Rage of Dragons, and Sengoku 3.

It's NEO-GEO AES it was designed to bring the Arcades home.
It's the only console in this world that doesn't mix graphics and sound on one single cartridge circuit board. Instead it's rather like two cartridges in one.

No one deserves this state-of-the-art video game console dirt cheap.

It's an interesting ascertion that no one deserves this type of console cheap. I guess none of us actually "deserves" a game system at all. It's a luxury, not a necessity, and whichever systems we have of collect, we should be grateful to have them at all.

FYI, you probably know this already but you can go the MVS route for almost the same gaming experience and pay a significant amount less for original hardware. Nothing wrong with the AES, I have a console with a couple AES games, but to get the bangers I’ve gone with MVS to save on cost.

    • @Forever8Bit
      @Forever8Bit  ปีที่แล้ว +2

No doubt! I really like the idea of the consolized MVS systems as an alternative to the AES. They make a lot of sense, especially since the carts aren't interchangable directly between MVS and AES. I once had a 4-slot MVS cab in my home arcade and it had all four slots filled. I think I sold it for like $400 or something absurd by today's standards. Whoops!

I remember seeing the Neo Geo in a front window display at my local Software Etc back in 1991. I asked my parents for it & they of course said no. It ended up being my grandmother who got it for me for my birthday that year. Software Etc sadly did not carry the Neo Geo very long. After about a year, they put all remaining systems/games on clearance and never re-stocked them. The only other local shop that carried Neo Geo was a small mom & pop shop in Oceanside, CA called "Game Adx". Sadly, their Neo Geo selection was not that great. I recall seeing an ad in the back of "Electronic Gaming Monthly" for a store in Los Angeles called "Japan Video Games". I ended up ordering most of my Neo Geo games from them. I recall calling them once and it sounded like an old lady answering the phone "hello?..." then I heard some guys' voice in the background say "it's for me mom." heh...
At any rate, those were great times and I dearly miss the 90s. Oh, and as far as game pricing went... yes, a lot of games were $199. Although "latest releases" (as well as newer games further down the road) were regularly $249.99 & even $299.99 - btw, I still have my Neo Geo Gold system complete in box. Still have a bunch of games for it also. These days I will pick up a game here & there off of eBay... although I tend to be picky with what I buy and will examine the games to make sure they are legitimate as there is a huge bootleg scene for the Neo Geo.

If you want to hear some all time bangers, Arastashi Saxophone 2 (Iori's team music) from KOF 96 and Rhythmic Hallucinations (Team Orochi's team music) from KOF 97. That is an american system which always seems to go for quite a bit. The Japanese systems are much cheaper. They are priced more like a Series X or PS5. I picked up an American system earlier this year for about $1,700. It is the most expensive game item I have ever purchased but am happy to have it and happy to have everything in English. The U.S. systems look great with HD Retrovision Component cables with the adapter. I don’t have the Jail Bar issues that alot of the Japanese systems have when trying to use Rgb. The system also came with an Mvs copy of Metal slug. Glad I got it when I did. With inflation, it is a little more than what I would have paid back in the day. I hope to get a memory card soon, the Hori Turbo stick, and a couple of the Neo Ceo Cd game pads. I currently only have two games for the system with how prices are. I have Magician Lord and Samurai Shodown 2. Both are U.S copies Cib. I enjoy them both and really only plan on getting one new game a year or so.

The only time you would want to lay that kind of money down is on a real Neo Geo AES or MVS cab. I paid a considerable amount of money for my Neo Geo AES but only because it's extremely rare and no, I'm not talking about it being simply rare because it is an AES in box. Check this out...
My Neo Geo AES was made in early 1990 (possibly 1989 before they released). The date says 1990 on the console but...the box and instructions all say 1989 on them. Now, this is where it gets really interesting. In all of my years of being a Neo Geo collector I have never seen one like mine. The box is completely white. On the box the name Neo Geo is printed in bold black lettering set on top of two different colored boxes. The top box is a golden yellow and the bottom is like a Halloween orange. The box itself has a white plastic carrying handle and it opens via a giant flap. Basically you don't have to slide the console out as it gets completely exposed once you open it and remove a huge styrofoam cover. Inside the box flap it has a stamp that says Property of Hilton Resort. Basically it was one of the original consoles before they began selling them to the public in mid to late 1990. Mine came with Ghost Pilots.
Addendum- No, it is not nor will it ever be for sale. ;)

Same man! The only place you could play a Neo Geo AES in America at the time was through a rental service while staying at a Hilton Resort. They apparently unloaded them sometime around the N64's introduction into the market. They rented those machines out as well. That's nothing....
No, what I really, really, really want is one of the Hilton Resort's multi-cart Neo Geo machines. The single cart consoles *regular Neo Geo AESs were only the first ones used by Hilton. SNK built versions of the AES that came in a huge rectangular concave box with 4/6 slots and a multi-switch button. This enabled you to rent the machine and up to 6 games at a time in one unit. Each game had a lock see-through case and could be changed at will by Hilton employees with the proper key. I have never seen one in my life but I have heard many SNK collectors talking about it before. It is the Neo Geo Holy Grail and whoever finds a working one may as well have won the freaking lottery. Can you imagine how much a real one in perfect working order would be worth?! It would have to be exactly one dump truck units of money. I wouldn't care...if I had one I'd never sell it.

Had to set "SDR Mode" in Fincal Cut Pro X to reverse the color damage. It could only be fixed to that degree. It's a small setting in the Elgato's text doc. Lesson learned for me.
