I visited Atari many times back them and they were a great group of people. They just didn't have the war chest to compete. Still have my launch Jag with a complete library and some rare goodies I got from Sam. Miss these days greatly.
Oh really this is amazing I got to watch this because I picked up one of these bad boys back in August not too long ago still in a box nice and pristine I got 10 games for it right now but it does have the best 32-bit 3D smooth Graphics I've ever seen and more colors too
I received a gold star 3DO as a birthday present on release, and I absolutely loved it and still think about it all the time. The light gun and all the shooting games were really cool.
Back in the day these rare consoles had a mystique about them. There was no TH-cam to find footage on. I sort of miss that. I'd love to try out a 3DO or Jaguar in the flesh (or plastic as it were) but over the years, being able to see what the games actually looked like has definitely tempered that desire. I remember thinking Way of the Warrior and Kasumi Ninja seemed very intriguing based on magazine screenshots. Whoooo boy. :D
Agreed! I remember when I worked for Babbage's that we had two TVs with VCRs at the front of the store that ran game previews on thim. But since they were on VHS, it wasn't like anyone got to choose a specific game or system to see. It took a while for the stores to embrace the kiosk idea, ubiquitous in today's stores. Could have been a very different sales and gaming landscape with more interactivity.
I remember the 3DO quite well. My cousin and I made the jump during...I was/still am a huge FPS guy so I went with the Atari Jaguar while he got the 3DO. We spent countless hours having at each other over who's super console was the best. I loved them both. What's funny is I actually went to the store to buy a 32X for my Sega Genesis/Sega CD for Doom (of course) and they were all sold out...imagine that. I wound up breaking down and getting the Jaguar instead and I was very happy with it. I do have a 3DO today with almost every game on this list minus Star Control and I will get it eventually. Right now I'm busy playing our (fiancee and I) 9th generation consoles and the Sega Saturn at the moment.
Nice! That sounds like it was a great time with your cousin back in the day. The 3DO and Jag both have some legendary games on them. They're like any system; some games will be great and some shovelware. Great that you have been able to enjoy both systems!
The truth about the 3DO doesn’t amaze me at all. Most of the games of this list were available on other systems of that time and for the cost of the 3DO system you could almost buy a PlayStation and a Saturn.
Exactly, I think the only hands down winner was road rash over the other systems but again, it's just slightly better on 3do and not exclusive. I would modify the OPs statement of 10 games worth playing to 10 games that can't be played elsewhere or significantly better on the system being evaluated for worthiness...back when it released though and for maybe a year before other next gen systems showed up? It was amazing, but almost as out of reach as a neo geo
I worked as Senior Editor of VGA magazine back then and still have the 3DO I bought on launch day. Revisionist kid reviewers are really annoying. The only thing that killed the 3DO was the price.
I too was around at launch and sold the 3DO. And much like you I got one on release. The unit comes a close second in my heart to the Dreamcast in the console world. :) When the company I was working for went bankrupt we were give free reign to take some stock in lieu of payment for our final wage. lol. SO, I ended up with about 15 games for the thing. Loved it. Wish I didn't give it to my mate now. lol.
Awesome! That's cool you were there for the launch also. It was some kind of hyped back then. The Time Magazine 1993 Invention of the Year, no less. :)
I had a neighbor growing up in the 90's that had a 3DO, and second neighbor with a Sega Saturn, and a third neighbor with multiple Atari and Nintendo consoles and a PS1 which was the first modded console I ever saw modded to play burnt disks. At the time I had a NES, Super NES, an N64, and a PS1. I was a big fan of the games I got to play on 3DO especially the original Need for Speed. Same with the Saturn, I loved Daytona USA. Kinda crazy that a small subdivision in small town Tennessee had such a range of game systems at that time. I think I'll try to reach out to them to see if any of those guys still have any of their old consoles.
Need For Speed and Star Control 2 we're the 2 games I played the most. I also played a game called Immercenary, I remember being blown away by that game.
I still absolutely LOVE NFS. It remains one of my favorite racers of all time. And I still covet the NSX from the ERA. I at least got my picture taken with a yellow one once. I mean, I didn't get to drive it, or sit in it. Just stood by it. But even that was enough to get my heart pounding a bit. :)
I had Panasonic 3DO Interactive Mulitiplayer and that version of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo x was better than the arcade. There needs to be a mini of it.
Fun games on that list. I love the Zombie soundtrack for Way of the Warrior. I just watched The Devil's Rejects for the first time last week. Rob makes great content.
Most people who turn the nose up on the 3DO never actually played it or weren't even born back then. I had a rich cousin at the time who had it almost at day 1 with a bunch of games and my 13 year old self from back when really enjoyed the experience.
HERES my story. "Dad I want a 3DO for the jurassic park game." Dad "ok well Christmas is coming". Cut to me walking into EB games, before Game Stop bought every game store in America, and was somehow able to make a monopoly. Well I asked how much it was, the clerk said "It's 700 for the console, and 65 for Jurassic Park." That was the last time I ever even saw a 3DO.
I remember EB Games! There was an EB right upstairs from the Babbage's I managed at the Haywood Mall in Greenville, SC. Thankfully, 3DOs are much less expensive these days, even on eBay. :)
I first saw a Panasonic 3DO console at Universal City Walk. It was on display by Electronics Boutique (EB Games, later called GameStop). Or so I think. Anyway, there was a racing game and since I loved racing games as a kid, i was playing it. I had a Sega Genesis at the time so I didn't feel that another console interested me so I never wanted a Panasonic 3DO
I've owned an Fz-1 with a handful of games such as Road Rash, Street Fighter, Need for speed, Samurai Showdown for ages and I've enjoyed it to this day, not the best system but like women, the looks and curves caught my eye 🤣
It really does have a uniquely cool look to it. Those four pillars on the corners scream Greek architecture. Hmm... maybe that was the "Achilles Heel" after all. 🤣
Wow, no love for Gex? I'm surprised. Don't get me wrong, the games on your list are all excellent, but I'd think it would get an honorable mention at least.
I was a programmer at Disney at the time and we wouldn't touch this p.o.s.. It was super expensive, under powered and a nightmare to program for. The 3DO company gave us a few dev kits and they sat in a closet, never used. Price adjusted for inflation: $1,441. You literally could buy a SNES, Genesis & TurboGrafx (all three!) for the same or less than this junk cost. I'll still give your video a thumbs up cuz I love your content!
That's interesting. That probably explains the lack of homebrew out there for it. Virtually none at all. There's a really cool mod of Need For Speed that gives the cars super speed. And I think there's a variety game disc Not a lot else, last I checked.
are you in Canada John? the 3DO box is the same as mine where the front of the box is in french, normally im used its on the back lol and in USA wouldnt be in french
I'm in the States. South Carolina, specifically. The US version mostly had the black box with the white lettering. But the four panel color box was so much more colorful for a thumbnail. I guess it worked: we're here talking about it, and I'm glad you came here to see the video and have a convo!
@@Forever8Bit SNES will always be my GOAT but I remember getting a 3DO while in college for cheap (circa 2007) and really enjoying it...criminally underrated.
Meh, I'm not really crazy about sports, racing, or some of the obtuse stuff mentioned there I played on DOS little over 20 years ago. I prefer things within the realm of fantasy a bit more that played better on the PC, and SNES/Genesis, if we're being era-specific, since PS1 wasn't even out in Japan yet. I was lucky to not only have Doom as my first game, but on a well-equipped 486DX2, as well. If it had more RPG's, and Doom wasn't so poorly programmed, slapped together in ten weeks, I'd give it a go. Sadly, the system was poorly-timed, and if there were more RPG's slated for the system, it wouldn't have crashed and burned, like it did. I'm still playing on the PS1 to this day, and I can safely say Sony won in the electronic company department of gaming.
@5:57 misinformation. It can be played on TH-cam, but either content id will match and auto-pay royalties if not demonetize and if not represented by a major label to be content ID'd then the copyright holder can submit a dmca request..but saying "copyrighted music cant be played on youtube" when the reality is "im not willing to risk to giving up monetization even if it could be a small % for royalties so you can hear such content in my video", not the same at all... 😂
Agreed. That's why I went the "might" route. But others will feel that the Jag is indeed superior, and I respect that. We all love the same thing in the end - retro gaming. :)
Know what's great about 3DO? It has ports of NeoGeo games like Samurai Showdown. Not quite on par with the Neo original, but it's ain't bad. Made the top 10, after all. :)

3DO is very underrated. Plus now that there are ODE options, rgb mods & the newly announced HDMI mod, this is a must system.
I saw that new HDMI mod! Does some really incredible things with the digital video output. So much great new tech for the 3DO in 2022!

I get that. Once upon a time (at launch), they were insanely pricey. THe better consoles definitely won out.
The 3DO Dropped at least a Year before the PS1. The only Competition the 3DO had when Released was the Sega CD. And it was better for sure.
