Where u based out off? Im currently prepping my car for paint and I'm set on doing the gloss white rustoleum. Only my second time doing it.

Better off with a cheap one step auto paint that has UV inhibitors, Rust-Oleum has zero, nothing in that regard and starts to fade at 6 months. There has to be a $60-$100 true auto paint?
The closest thing would be Nason fast dry for about $120 but that's in the same price market as most kits that are found online the point of the video was just to show the cheapest way and what you can expect for results thanks for watching
I had just watched two videos on spraying Rustoleum & I’m happy to find this channel, I’m going to watch all to learn more. You may cover this question later but I need to calm my nerves, there’s so many does & don’ts about reactions of different paints, primers, fillers I’m ready starting to doubt myself. I have been helping my grandson with a 56 f100, I’ve used filler first on welded in panels, sprayed self etching primer over that & da’d metal, planning on using urethane primer over that to block out. After seeing your videos, can I use rust oleum paint over that primer? Thanks in advance for any help you can share, Bill.
You can add some acrylic enamel hardener and mix 4:1:1 it will dry faster and more durable
Rustoleum single stage on my truck is holding its own after 10+ years
Painted mine this way 18 yrs ago,,cover car on Ol Skool Rodz mag, Sept issue,2013 been in several mags, paint still looks good!!!
I did my 71 beetle same way. But i wanted a custom color. I bought mixing cups and measured parts of navy and silver. Wound up with a light metallic blue. Did it 50/50 with acetone. Painted it in a garage pushing 100°. That paint dried hard as a rock. And no need to wet sand and polish.
I 100% agree with you. I would not thin that paint much below 70%. That Rustoleum is best sprayed with as much pigent or material as possible. I've seen the results of thinner coverage. BTW, Acetone is best for thinning for vehicles. Prep is absolutely the biggest part of any paint job. Came out really nice!
Nice job brother. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great results ! Gotta love low buck jobs that look this good
That's what I'm talking about! Awesome!
"Budget paint job for the win." I like your style! Subscribed!
Bonus points for not getting paint on your hands or that black t-shirt!
2 to 1 mix ratio usually works well. You want to be 18-20 seconds on a zahn cup for viscosity. A good enamel reducer works better than acetone. Xylol is an enamel reducer if you don't want to use an automotive reducer. Add hardener if you wish. And please, use a strainer when filling the gun.
Looks great man, Awsome job, hopefully this spring I'm going to be trying my luck painting my 2000 Grand prix, black. Watching your channel for tips, Thanks 😊
Great job! And a great video my brother!
Looks great!
Looks great !!
Awesome job bub
Nice job my guy. Really nice job …. I’ve. Been thinking bout trying it out on my c10
That’s a great looking job
I've never used 600 directly before paint, I was taught depending on the type of paint from 180-320 to give the surface a tooth for the paint to grab. Your paint looks good I'll have to try 600. I'm a lot older than you and learned when we were using Lucite Laquer, Dupont enamel and clear coat wasn't even a dream lol, in fact I still have my Binks No. 7 gun.
Yes I was always taught no higher than 600 because you need the surface to be able to grip the paint I grew up using Dupont and ppg paints as well.
Your not trying to remove the paint just scuff up the clearcoat
Also learned in 80s with lucite lacquer and Centari. Still have a gallon of black lacquer 99
Nice we still have some ancient cans of Dupont and ppg hanging around the paint store as well thanks for watching
Wow I learned something today ! ! !
I sprayed a 1 ton truck with rustoleum in the white years ago and the only problem I found with it was it looked like it was fresh out of a hospital. I came back and did some red and black pinstripes and that was tons better, to me. Very nice job though and for the “hospital” white 😂🤣 it does look great. I give it a 5 for the work you put into it but the color I have to say it’s a 3. Just my opinion but it needs something else with it to offset all that white. To each their own, right? Awesome job though
1 to 1 paint/acetone and 20% japan drier hardner ,1.4 tip wide open fan,35-40 psi at the gun,50 psi at the tank regulator👍🛸💨
Good set up to go by and thanks for watching
japan drier over regular hardner?
@@walkerandrews8892 ive never tried reg. hardber ob rustolium just japan drier made for oil based but others might work too,
I use regular hardner
I thin it around 25-50% myself with acetone. So 50-75% paint.
That cars paint job is perfect. Doesn't needed painted!
Gorgeous
should use hardener, makes it glossier and of course much durable...
Hardner makes it dry too fast and makes it brittle, a little thinner is o.k. but hardner makes it too hard.
Great job
good content,keep it up!
Looks good. I painted a truck in my driveway and it came out semi respectable
Keep it up doing great
I think it's a great paint job
I paint canoes with Rustoleum but I do use enamel catalyst, a Harbor Freight gun and the boats look awesome. 70-30 ratio does work well.
So far Paint job looks really nice.
Should keep it's gloss for a couple of years check out my 4 and 5 yr rustoleum review videos to see how they held up long term.
I have used rustoleum paint many times to paint cars. Rustoleum paint also works great as a base coat if you spray it in a satin Sheen and then use an automotive clear coat over it. Works great every time and very cheap and compared to thousands of dollars for a professional paint job
Are some clear coats not compatible with rustoleum? As it's an enamel paint? Isn't there also a cure time before putting on a clear coat? I've always seen enamel lift and wrinkle doing that? Just curious.
Yes I have experimented with many clear coats that just won't work with Rust-Oleum paint period some wrinkle and some just don't allow the rustoleum to cure out underneath the clear however I've had no issues with 2k urethane based clears which is why I suggest Nason 2k urethane mult panel clear and speedokote 2k urethane clear as I've seen both work without issues over Rust-Oleum paint thanks for watching
@timsolomon8352 let it harden and gas off completely before applying clearcoat.
@@timsolomon8352 with my experience using rustoleum, was wrinkling appeared when I tried to do a tri coat pearl over it. If I just do clear over rustoleum, I’ve had no problems Using acme finish 1 clear. I’m Not a professional just a back yard dude.
In Detroit area used to be a shop painted whole cars. Earl Schibe -
“ I can paint any car any color $29.95 “ back in the 1960s
If you took one in already prepped up and taped off they put some good paint on it. If you let them do it all , good luck.
Looks good
Thinning it depends on s slew of different things like where you live, humidity, wheather, and who knows what else. Do wgat works best for you to get the best possible finish you can get. Test panels maybe?
Metallic Red
The thing I've learned about painting is mixing ratios are solid guidelines you can deviate from dependant upon your equipment, method, and comfortabilty of spraying.
Nice!
TH-cam recommended this video 👍
Many years ago when I was young, I painted my first Jeep with a Wagner power painter in a gallon of green oil-based house paint! It wasn't great my Professional Standards, but it was actually pretty good and that paint job lasted about 20 years! Not long after I painted another Jeep with the same green paint, but did a better job thinning it to reduce orange peel and get a better gloss. About 10 years later, I painted my Volkswagen dune buggy with yellow Rust-Oleum and was quite pleased with the results. About 10 years after that, I painted the cab on my dump truck with red rust-oleum. I was very pleased with how that turned out. All of this was done outside in the driveway or the backyard, so I had the usual problems of dirt and bugs now it's 15 years later and I've got about five work trucks that all need a paint job and I would like to make them all one color - Rust-Oleum Safety Red! I want to convert a garage Bay into a temporary paint booth. I am curious what you are using for a ventilation fan system to draw away the Airborne overspray?
I'm actually using an industrial fan that my father acquired from a building that was undergoing renovations before that I was just using a typical tractor supply 32 inch fan with the door cracked LOL but hey we all have to start somewhere right thanks for watching
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS Thanks for the fast reply! I just subscribed and was watching one of your other videos when I saw the squirrel cage blower style fan. I'll definitely be watching and learning more from you, thanks

@floridagunrat1625 yeah funny thing about that one the previous one blew up on me during one of the paint job videos so I had to upgrade LOL
Best video I’ve seen
Looks great! Would like to see a car painted in one of the new gray colors.
Have you seen the follow-up paint job to this one the smoke gray Rust-Oleum $60 paint job if not check it out but plenty more coming soon thanks for watching
Get show room results 3 parts paint 1 part xylene or naphtha 1 part clear oil base 1oz penetrol 1/2 enamel hardener looks like a mirror when finish it acts as a single stage but results are crazy good great video don't use acetone it's bad for your gun and causes paint to haze dries too fast
Great job doing your video. I like your ways of doing them and your attitude :). Just a FYI if you add a "WET LOOK" hardener to your Rustoleum paint it will come out shinier and much harder. I use the Mar-Hyde Wet Look brand by 3M. Yes it adds about $40-$50 to the total cost but well worth it. Yes there is a big difference. The hardener has the UV protection in it too which is important making paint last longer. The hardener also protects the paint from scratching easily. More shine, resistant to scratches more (harder paint) and UV protection. Peace
P.S. I tried cheaper hardeners and they didn't make the paint shinier like the Mar-Hyde did.
Good to know, and thanks for your comment. Yes, sometimes I use Hardner. Sometimes I don't. I pretty much did this to show people. You can do things dirt cheap, if you have to thanks again for watching
Nice job, I wanted to point out the Rustoleum Topside Marine Paint. I used the Navy Color on my Vintage Race Bike and it works well. It does cost a little bit more than Professional but it says on the can there it is UV Resistant. Not sure exactly what that means but it might be something you would like to check out. The downside is the limited number of colors, but when it is just a base color like white it might be a good choice. Home Depot has a good deal on Rustoleum quarts some times when you get a 2/pk they will have a better price though you may have to order it because they may not have it on the shelf.
Sounds interesting I'll have to look into it thanks for letting me know and thanks for continuing watching

cool man cool
Looks great was wondering about the jams. I'll be repainting my b250 van this summer. Main color will be metallic ocean blue. Still have picked the stripes style or color yet.👍👍👍👍
The jams stayed silver this was just a budget color change and the transition isn't bad thanks for watching
I use house of color
I rolled a old 1966 122 Volvo, I need to send you pictures, before and after...
Came out great did you do jams cause if you didn’t I would love to see how you backed masked for my upcoming project thanks
I didn't do the jams on this one the transition from the white to the silver wasn't that drastic so I just made sure that everything was prepped and clean and taped up the seals etc. On this one but I'll cover my jam masking process in a future video thanks for watching and commenting!!!
I'm getting ready to do this on the 2008 Impala I just bought, I live about halfway From Phoenix and Tucson and the sun has absolutely destroyed the paint on the top half of the car so since it already needs painted I'm going to 2 tone it, from the top of the fenders down I'm leaving it the factory Precision Red and from the top of the fenders up I'm going to paint silver but not the regular silver, I'm going to buy a pint and add a quarter pint of black paint in it then paint it I want it darker than the silver aluminum color but the other silvers they sell is too dark so I'm going to custom mix my own color.
don't mean to be negative but that has some chunky orange peel. probably should have done a test panel and got the thickness of the rustoleum dialed in. but not bad on the spraying. keep it up
Nothing that can't be wet sanded and buffed out but yes I had to dial the gun back from a previous job thanks for watching
All that and leave out the best part untapeing it hahaha good video thow man
ive used auto paint reducer , i took the risk and its what has worked for me vs acetone , the japan drier does gives a red tint but it does magically goes away a big relief , 2bh i do not ever recommend anybody out there to paint laquer on top of the rustoleum even if its dry which ive also done the paint will soften and peel off like plastic , glad the car came out but i had to re-done the trunk but glad i had quit that tire shop but then the owner of the truck wrecked the truck so basically i was off the hook , the biggest issue to be addressed and worth documenting was how to avsoid peel in edges specially if u have a business running i mean the paint will hold for 2-3 yrs then it will peel where the door plastic emblems that are like bumspers id did over came so from letting it dry and avoid lots of water and using bull dog , adhesion promoter , to just taking them out and painting on the side ., great video stay bless
Yes good question honestly my combination has been the same process prep panels to 600 grit apply bulldog adhesive promotor in the foreseen problem areas I then spray the Rustoleum with acetone no hardener no extra additives no Japan dryer I then use only 2K urethane clear because I find that bonds best with the Rustoleum and gives me the least amount of issues long-term no shrinkage or reactions. I really don't do as many Rust-Oleum paint jobs in particular as most people think but for some reason everyone is comfortable using Rust-Oleum as the base and it does work well if you use certain combinations together. Most of the time I use Nason Automotive fulbase and do regular base clear paint jobs for customers. If somebody just happens to want to Rust-Oleum paint job to save money i pretty much just go over the pros and cons with them and realistically about two or three years if prepped properly the paint job is fine. I have had them last 4 or 5 years with little to no issues depending on what conditions the vehicle goes through in that time period but as you said prep is key and using a good promotor thanks for watching
Love seeing these cheaper solutions, getting ready to paint my jeep with Krylon farm paint... kinda worried about spraying it. not sure how to mix it but thinking 60/40
Mix a small batch and spray on a sample piece then you can see how it’s flowing another thing you can do is get a paint cup and time the paint one very important step is strain all paint when putting in the gun gets all the impurities out of the paint
Roll it with foam rollers my wife did a great job 👍
How in the world did you pour that paint with a full gallon with so little spill...lol. Great job man. For $60 you aint getting better than that!
Hi from Canada, great details to your presentation, thank you , Can I paint my truck satin black with your set up ? tks
Yes rustoleum is very user friendly especially when it comes to satin or flat black so you should have no issues if you want to paint your truck with it thanks for watching from Canada
Good video, would like to see a more in depth video of how to mix, the 70-30 method isn't really accurate depending on what mixing cup you have. Is that. 1.1 paint ratio or something else? Good video tho. I painted my nova with Rust-Oleum but i feel it could have been better. Just looking for more paint advice
I used mineral spirits works great
I don't doubt the paint can look great! But isn't the longevity linked to UV protection?
Yes that is one factor to it with cheap paint check out my 4 and 5 year rustoleum paint job reviews where I go more in depth thanks for watching

Good info. I was told to use mineral spirits to thin the paint. Is there a big difference between using acetone vs mineral spirits. I will be using a LPHV setup to paint my jon (pallet racks)..
Not really I've just always used acetone because it was specified on the can but mineral spirits and paint thinner work fine too thanks for watching
Great video!
I’m getting ready to paint a horse trailer I recently purchased. What ratio should I paint at? Hardner?
Thank you for your help
60% paint 40% acetone is a great mix ratio you don't have to but if you wanna add hardener tractor supply majic hardener works great little black can with green tags
WOW, looks awesome!! Im restoring my 66 vw bug and when the time comes, i want to paint it myself. Old metal compared to new metal and plastic im wondering if you have to prepare it any differently compared to that KIA? Oh and i just subscribed to your channel, you got good content brother!
The preparation is all the same you can always spray adhesion promoter over the plastic before spraying for peace of mind I use bulldog adhesion promoter. Thanks for watching much more to come so stay tuned
Fling green in the chameleon is green, blue, gold and red
I would like to see how that comes out
Nice, but very surprised you didn't add catalyst to it! Makes it far more durable and U.V. resistant
Great video! I feel confident in trying this now. What is your opinion on painting a car outside?
It can be done just gotta wait for ideal conditions is all thanks for watching
I had people tell me I could do it with a 3 gallon compresser and come to find out you can’t so now I gotta get a new compresser I just been ran around 1:59
I've seen plenty of ppl doing it with small compressor set ups but you got to use a lvlp gun the hvlp guns require too much for a small set up and most ppl burn them up trying to make it work. Thanks for watching
It was nice if you showed the vehicle without the tape and covers, mirrors installed. Just to compare the before and after.
Thanks for sharing, beautiful job!!
Check out my follow up video where I do a full walk-around thanks for watching
Awesome thanks for the video, shit in the dark with the question I’m about to ask , on getting a reply , anyways here goes, prior too painting, what paper do you recommend smoothing out the primer that’s still in the vehicle, so number of grit to prep last time prior too painting, second is what pressure is good too run off the compressor, and is there a certain size compressor or will any decent one do, appreciate your time thanks again, watching from southern cali
I would say you ideally want to use 220 to 320 then prime and wet sand with 400 or 600 any higher and the paint doesn't stick as well. As far as compressor size a smaller one is fine but if your using a small compressor use a lvlp gun low volume low pressure and be mindful of your pressure while your painting around 22 to 26 psi max is ideal for most set ups hope this helps you and thanks for commenting and watching
Great job!!!
If you were to shoot clear over the white would you wait 24 hours then shoot it with clear. Also,do you have to sand it before
shooting the clear?
No I would just wait for it to completely flash off and then I start applying the clear coats thanks for watching
Great video. Been following your channel lately and some great stuff! Notice I never see you strain your paint when putting in the cup. Just not showing or you don't? Thx!
Honestly sometimes I do and sometimes I don't I usually just go with it when mixing and if I notice any issues or something doesn't look right I'll restrain it just to make sure good eye tho and thanks for watching
nice Job looks 🔥 on point 👍🏼 how many gallon air compressor do you use ? i want to paint my car but im not sure if i can use a 20 gallon air compressor would you recommend that pls let me know thank you
My compressor is a fairly good size 5 HP 60 gallon tank but yes you can tackle the job with a smaller set up just take your time don't let the compressor run too low pressure wise while your spraying and separate everything into sections you should be good to go thanks for watching
Enjoy the content... I'm looking for a red candy type paint that I've seen others use. Where can I get it? It looks like blood in the cup but the color is amazing.
You're talking about candy concentrate I included the link below so you can check it out thanks for watching tamcopaint.com/products/tamco-custom-candies-og-red-concentrate
Why didn't you fix the dents before spraying? This is something I've noticed with the Rust-Oleum paint jobs on TH-cam, nobody seems to do bodywork. It does look pretty good for $60 bucks for sure.
THAT is exactly what I wanna do to my 96 chevy
Do you clean your spray gun between coats? Im learning to spray Rustoleum for a cheap older truck and like how cheap it can be done.
I don't particularly clean my paint gun between coats I do clean it when I transition between paint and clear coat though and I take it apart and clean it thoroughly
I have two spray tips for my HVLP gun, 1.4 and 1.8....What tip should I use spraying with the Rustoleum/Accatone/Enmal hardner? Thanks in advance.
I use the 1.4 tip to spray bases and clears. The 1.8 tip would be for high build primer or heavy flakes thanks for watching
Did my Rust-Oleum paint job on my car and it turned out real nice but now I want to do a clear coat over it unfortunately in Canada you can't get Rust-Oleum clear coat anymore because they don't make it. Do you have any suggestions on a clear coat that I can use over Rust-Oleum
Yes any 2k urethane clear coat works good speedokote makes a very affordable one and I have an Amazon link in the description of my video that takes you to all my recommended products thanks for watching
I’d like to see it completely finished and ready for delivery to get a true finished look. Thanks

Do you use any kind of ventilation, such as a fan? it wasn't even close to the fog of Lützen in there that you usually see when people spray without a paintbooth. i have seen several videos of people using rustoleum. How durable is it. do they only come in solid colors, or is metallic an option as well? job looks awesome
Yes i have a fan mounted in the side wall pulling fumes and a back door section to pull in fresh air. Rust-Oleum is very durable paint but I recommend a 2k urethane clear coat as it has about 6 to 8 months of gloss life especially on the darker colors due to lack of uv protection. The lighter colors hold up better but the big downside is a lack of metallic color choices so I usually add flakes and pearls to it in order to make my own metallic colors so check out some of my other videos where I go more in depth and even show a 4 and 5 yr paint job reviews thanks for watching
Thats what Im using but shooting blue ghost pearl over it.
Nice 🙂👍
When I do this and want to use hardener. How much would I use? Would I still mix 70 30 and some hardener? Would the times between coats be different? sorry for all the questions but I am going to try this and want to get it right
The hardener most ppl use is the majic hardener from tractor supply it comes in a pint and you add it to a gallon but the flash times between coats should be about the same just wait for it to tack touch the paper as long as you don't see paint on your finger your good to go and the mix would stay the same thanks for watching
Thanks for the reply. I saw that at Tractor Supply just wasn't sure on the amount to add to the gallon@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
I was wondering if I can use airless sprayer to paint my rv with this paint
Yes I've seen people do it I've just done it through a hvlp gun thanks for watching
When I've brushed on Rustoleum white directly out of the can, I found it yellows over time. Will that happen here?
I've never had any issues with it yellowing now I have seen issues with people using certain microfiber cloths and the color from the cloth bleeding onto the panel and then coming through in the paint that's why I don't use dyed microfiber cloths. Aside from that I've never had Rust-Oleum yellow over time I have seen clear coat do that though
First time viewer. You have a new subscriber. I'm in South Texas with high humidity. I will be using Rust-oleum Yellow on the Veep. What is the max humidity I should be spraying in. Also what kind of clear should I use. Please add what tip is on the gun along with pressure. I am new to spray painting.
Thank you for watching all the way from Texas I typically use a 1.4 tip and I try to shoot with a gun pressure of 28 PSI that's with full trigger pulled on the regulator use 2K urethane clear coat over rustoleum paint and I would try to avoid painting in humidity above 80% you can do it you just have to be very careful and take your time and be sure to bleed your tanks so you don't have water trapped that could end up in your system during paint thanks again for watching
I'm in Hawaii where the humidity is high. I got a used oxygen cylinder from a medical supplies company (they often toss old ones). I drilled and tapped for air hose connectors on each end and filled it with dessicant (bulk jug from Amazon) and run the air through it. I have a spare jug of dessicant and change as needed. I use a funnel to pour it into the tank. It pulls the water out of the air. The dessicant turns color as it gets wet. Test for how long it takes. I dry it on a cookie sheet in the oven after using it (don't tell my wife).
I purchased hardner for the exact same paint to paint my truck with is it ok to add hardner?
Yes as long as it's catalyst hardener for the exact same paint you should be good to go
Do you have any videos showing how you clean your guns after using rustoleum paint? I tried to clean my gun after painting a small rim for my cultivator, and I had quite a hard time cleaning it. I used water too soon and it was a mess!
I have a few videos showing me breaking it down but not in depth I only use acetone to clean my guns I don't use water on them but I'll fit that in on a video thanks for watching
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS ok, I will search your vids to see what you have provided already! thanks
White is a great choice hides a lot.
How long on average will this Rustoleum last in a hot climate with a lot of sunlight/UV? I would like to try this, but I was under the impression that "real" car paint was made to withstand sunlight longer. Would a 2k clearcoat help?
I've had basic Rustoleum paint jobs like this last for 4 to 5 years but yes adding a 2K urethane clear coat would make it much more durable against UV and just overall make the paint job last longer thanks for watching
I heard 50/50 was a good ratio too.
Good video nice job
Can you give some how to advise as painting outside?
If your spraying outside I would say try to close off the area best you can to minimize trash in the air getting in your paint and try not to paint in humidity. You can always go back wax and buff later but the biggest thing is trying to keep stuff out of your paint like bugs so you'll prob have to babysit your paint job big time. Thanks for watching

Could you explain "chase the wet line"? Thanks
Just a term painters use to say chasing your spray pattern so that you don't get a dry spray spot. Tilt your head in the light to see wet area where you just sprayed do the next coat with a 50% overlap.
Can I use acrylic enamel and mix with acetone at70/30 mix
Most Acrylic enamel paint needs a general reducer that's made for that specific paint but some can use other thinning agents like acetone. You would prob wanna try a small sample with your paint just to make sure everything dries right and you don't get any weird reactions as long as everything looks good past that I don't see why not.
I’m surprised you didn’t remove the lights and door handles. As soon as you use the door handles, you’ll see the silver underneath. Other than that, very informative and helpful video.

Basically 3 to 1 or if you wanted a little bit thinner 2 to 1 works great as well just pretty much put half as much acetone in the mix as you do paint and you should be good thanks for watching if you have any other questions let me know
