Well, I'm going to be the party pooper here- I couldn't leave anything like that. AAMOF, I just stripped the top of a 28y/o clothes drier that I replaced the motor and some bearings in that had damaged enamel on top: I cleaned it up, sprayed it and some of it wrinkled on me, some parts were perfect but the bad areas were about half as bad as your orange peel, so I decided to chemically strip the whole thing and re-spray the entire thing, and this is something that literally maybe 4 other people will see in my laundry room, IT DOESN'T MATTER, but I wanted to do it right (I'm glad I did it, I used Rustoleum appliance enamel and it came out perfect, it literally looks brand new) Yeah, your shop truck looks better than what it started as and will protect the body of the truck for a while, but honestly, that orange peel looks terrible, even after the cut and buff on the tailgate it doesn't look much better (and paint jobs typically look much better in video). I couldn't drive something that looked like that, it's worse than faded and pealing paint (which shows age and wear, not really something someone did to it), where this looks like it was done by someone who doesn't know what they were doing if it gets left- please don't take it that I'm saying that you don't know what you're doing, that's just the impression that leaving this gives, a worse impression than if you never messed with it. I've wondered about your fender spray outs, clearly I watch them all because they do show the effect, but typically you have some fairly heavy orange peel on them and I have wondered if you could cut and buff them to a good hobby car finish (something not perfect but good enough that you'd be proud of it at the local car show). I for one would love to see you put the effort into flowcoating this, as well as seeing what it takes to get a few of your fender spray outs to look glassy smooth (probably good practice before attacking the truck). I think it would be good for both you and your audience.

Apple Red is my go to color for shop projects. That Cherry Red Pearl is a winner. Apple Red is a 5. Black is 4. Bet the black side would really pop with a couple different sizes of burgundy flake. Jonathan, you Sir are an excellent teacher. Todays take away for me was all about what base color(s) to consider . I have heard you talk about base color before, today the light finally flashed on. Cherry Red Pearl over white base = blotchy. I really thought it would be a pinkish color. That little tidbit of information is a huge money saver to me. I buy all my custom paint in spray can form, it's not cheap but the results from using automotive grade paints is well worth the extra costs IMO. Thank you again. Sincerely, Elwood Williams

Yep. You answered my questions on rustoleum bases. What your telling me is, Use all your clear paint up. After the base n pearl goes down. That way its thick enuff to cut n buff. Your old truck looks fine. Paid $3k for a 93 Chevy truck 100 years ago. Have $6k in R and R every rolling piece on it. Now a $1000 paint job and I will be happy. Beats a 2025 Silverado by $40k. Would u say 4 coats of clear then 800 grit 1500 2000 then 3000?

You should of started with 800 and you wouldn't of gave up so fast talking about your not trying to get it perfect. If you weren't trying to get it perfect why even do it. If your trying to grow a business u would really want to get it as perfect as possible. It's just a shop truck but it's actually a big example of what you do

Awesome. I actually got a buffer for free in great condition. When Im finished doing chemotherapy I plan on getting a project car and doing my own paint job using the things i have learned from you and GT's channel. He does Rustoleum paintjobs too. I did do this many years ago cutting and buffing. I failed at it but i still got a good shine out of it but next time for sure I wanna do it right with the 2k Clear and so on. i used rustoleum clear out of the can and it was terrible back in the day.

Another great one also 1 question so you said you start with 1000g is that the heavyest you always start with?😊

What a difference! Question; What kind of 'cut & buff' *job* would require a D.A. sander over doing it by hand?

This happened to me the last couple paint jobs I did. I think I had too much air vs material. Didn’t atomize correctly and I had the gun too far away and moving too fast. I should have had re cleared it.

That looks a whole lot better for sure! I think though if it had been me since I had to re-sand it anyway I would have just put one or two additional coats of clear on it. Medium to heavy

I'll hand you a 3.84 for the colors, crazy how many are shown in these ultra shifts. As usual though your work is great.

Notice on Light colored surfaces how dark pigments leave speckling like on eggs but on Black the color accentuates the piece. On White and light colors it add more of an iridescent look. Nice color shift though

Nice colors. You would get a much much better result if you use base coat and intercoat clear for the pearls. You would have save your self a couple days and no orange peal

That is a 5 all day long. Rustoleum Apple Red has been my go to for shop projects for decades. Might have to add some Champagne Colorshift and spice up my next project.

5 & 5 today. Have you ever mixed two or more different Eye Candy Pigments in the same mix?🤔

Thank you, very helpfull video. I have painted my holden commodore with black and a normal automotive clear coat and most people dont beilieve its a rustoleum paint job.

I found Geisha over white it discolored the white yellowish, I used a GM black rose metallic for a base with racing stripes using pavilion color shift then a geisha with the same clearcoat you used then Ruri color shift over that, the black rose changes to blue, the effect was awesome and at a far angle the stripes disappear, and after it snowed the reflection from it was fantastic. Got an neat color try a flat black with AKI bronze its not a color shift but same company it ends up a root beer color but heavy in gold sparkle that in sun light have rainbow effects in the sparkles I painted my truck cap with it , very nice look. I used the bronze on a car along with 14K nugget gold, I painted an area with the gold then faded the bronze into it they worked great together.

How much do you charge for that paint job? It came out great!
