For everybody that is talking sheet, remember this is a paint job for $80. This is for people who only have $80 to put towards a paint job. From that perspective, this looks great.

For being the 1st time it’s not bad , I’d never painted a whole car but I thought painting the roof 1st was smart because I’m clumsy I know if it’s me and I painted the sides I’d probably screw up the sides trying to paint the top, nonetheless not bad

He did a decent job, painting cars ain’t hard!
NOTE: You should wash the car to remove any wax and loose dirt BEFORE you begin to sand the paint down. This will help prevent deep scratches, and it will help to stop your sandpaper from clogging up too quickly.
    1. Sand car until there’s absolutely no sheen or shine showing.
    2. Use primer to cover any bare metal surfaces.
    3. If you’re using body filler to fill in dents and dings, make sure you sand down to bare metal BEFORE you apply the body filler. Also, hit the spot with some wax and grease remover before you apply the filler. Then, apply the filler, let it dry, then sand the filler down until it’s smooth and primer over it.
    4. Lightly sand the primer down to reduce any texturizing left behind from spraying the primer. If you sand through the primer, just re-primer that spot and lightly sand again.
    5. Mask off any areas where you don’t want paint.
    6. Use wax and grease remover on the ENTIRE car, or the surface areas you intend to paint. After this, DO NOT touch the car with your bare hands. Your skin stays covered in oil and sodium deposits, it will ruin your paint job. If you end up touching the car, just use some more wax and grease remover on that spot.
    7. Use a tack cloth to remove any leftover dust and debris.
    8. Mix the paint in the bucket by itself thoroughly BEFORE you mix in the reducer, hardener, pearls, flakes, or any other additives. Then, of course, mix in the proper amount of additives.
    9. Use a strainer when pouring the mixed paint into your paint gun.
    10. Use a test surface to ensure your gun is spraying evenly and consistently.
    11. Wet ground if necessary, which reduces flying dust particles. If you accidentally wet the car, grab your wax and grease remover and thoroughly dry that area before you begin to paint.
    12. Start spraying your paint! Keep the gun at least six inches away from the car, and move at a steady pace. Move too fast, and your paint won’t be even, and you’ll have to do more coats. Move too slow, and your paint will run, and you’ll have to sand that area down and start over. You’ll learn the right speed as you proceed with your paint job. NEVER try to cover the surface with just one coat! Do light, even coats until all the paint is uniform.
    13. If you’re doing a base coat/clear coat job, apply at least two coats of base coat and let it dry BEFORE you apply the clear coat. Once the base coat dries, tack the car down with a tack rag, while wearing gloves so you don’t transfer any oil from your skin, then start to lay down your clear using the same technique you used to lay down the base. If you’re using the same gun for the base and the clear, make sure you clean the gun thoroughly. Also, make sure to use a strainer when pouring the clear into the gun. With clear coat, it’s best to not let the clear dry completely before you lay down the next coat. Let the clear coat flash dry, until it’s just tacky, then lay as many coats as you want. Three coats of high quality clear will usually have your paint looking wet, even when it’s dry.
    14. Let the paint flash dry a little longer this time, then pull off your masking BEFORE the paint dries completely. This will help assure the paint doesn’t peel off with the tape. Don’t let anyone touch the paint, and DON’T let the car get wet for at LEAST 24 hours after the paint job is finished.
    15. Enjoy your freshly painted car!

Why do I keep seeing so many videos where they paint bottom up?
Shouldn't they start with the roof first? Si they can reach without worrying about mess8ng up the sides?
I'm no professional! By any means! I've only recently discovered my passion for painting cars! I watch these videos like they're CRACK and I'm addicted!
My husband and I have decided to let me paint my Father in laws older Ford Ranger - just the same red as it always was - but I haven't got to do it yet...
That being said, I've painted 5 houses, top to bottom, including shelves and drawers and if I say so myself, I'm pretty good at it.
I wouldn't usually say so myself but I've had tons of people see my work and they all ask of I used a professional and then commend me.
So I must not be BAD at it.
Anyway, as I said I've been watching, studying, taking notes... and aim fairly confident that I can do this.
But common sense would tell you.... top to bottom ...
      Right? 🤷🏼‍♀️😕

i would advise to spray the top first because if you paint it last you can get overspray on hood and trunk. also strain that paint 2 times or more . if you ran unstrained paint through a hvlp gun it would surely clog the strainer built in the gun. also spraying at sundown you risk dew falling that dulls paint. spray early and let dry. you did very good with the tools you used

  • @moneymagnetismnetwork
    @moneymagnetismnetwork 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

As a person with experience painting I would do the roof before you do the entire side so you can get in close and over spray falls down more than up. Also move the gun a bit faster and a tiny bit more away from the surface and you won't get runs.

To all the guys saying it looks like crap you must have piles of cash laying around. You don't invest in a beater car period. This thing looks decent with new paint and nobody is looking at a 20 year old car expecting it to be perfect anyway. It looks good from 20 feet away and that's all that matters to this guy. If you wanna spend 2-4 thousand to repaint a 1000$ car go for it.

That's very true my friend, for someone to spend thousands of dollars on an older car is a bad investment cause it wont make it worth anymore, all it would do as far as value is move it from fair condition to good condition, but yes the fact that you did it yourself makes it all self rewarding,, I own a 95 Corolla that I wish I can paint, but when I start cleaning windows and rugs, boy does it look good for an old car, keep up the good work kid 👍

Next time make the first coat light, and let it dry; repeat process until the car is covered. Good job man. 2 tips for "next time" 1) if you're leaving trim on doors, etc. Tape it off before sanding. It will prevent it from getting scratched up. 2) When painting, use multiple thin layers to achieve full coverage. As opposed to trying to get full coverage in 1st coat. Far less orange peel and runs

Everybody doesn't want a $3000 paint job, especially on a cheaper vehicle.I got quoted $2800 to paint a 1985 Dodge truck, only worth maybe $3 grand. Will be primerring it myself, and possibly paint(flat or satin black Rustoleum ).I think the car looks fine, especially for the money spent.

It's a good educational video for people who don't know how, the gun just doesn't do the trick for automotive painting imo, but for under a 100 on an old beater, who cares right? Happy wet sanding , and use a soft block to keep the blisters on your fingers to a minimum.

I was thinking about using Majic paint from Tractor Supply. I thought it might be better or more suitable for a vehicle than Rustoleum rattle cans. I've found Rustoleum to be rather "soft" in the past. The complaint I hear is that Rustoleum spray enamel paints fade rather quickly. But I see that you've countered that problem by using a hardener. I guess for vehicles like we have, we don't need an expensive urethane car paint. I like your video. It shows me exactly what to expect and do for when I start my paint job.

I'm not a big Honda guy, but there are quite a few things that brought me and kept me interested in this video...
    1. Youre upload is RECENT. Viewing videos on things and seeing it being 7 years ago doesn't help.
    2. You used an ELECTRIC spray gun. I've owned the same exact one. I used it to DIP my first car panels and it came out alright. I have a brand new one sitting in my new car ready to go. I was deciding between this one and the new Avanti one that they just produced. The settings, dials and tips look a lot better quality. Still undecided.
    3. You painted a car
    4. You used a color close to the color I'd like to go with, so that was refreshing / satisfying.
    5. You were somewhat very detailed in the job. I haven't viewed your other videos...which I'm going to do.
    6. It came out pretty well. There are techniques that I'd use next time such as spraying the top first..etc etc... I'm also impressed how well it turned out WITH THE GUN in such adverse conditions.
    7. I've subscribed.... sub back!!!

Those of you that dis this guy need to remember this a 100 dollar paint job. I've sprayed two pickups with tractor enamel however I used a cheap air compressor and spray gun. The trick is to use the right type of tip, but, a good finish sand and polish on this finish and a lot of the flaws will come out. It is what it is...an inexpensive paint job. Taking a little more care with the technique could have produced a little better result but for 100 bucks he did good!

It looks good for what it is bro, Nice job. Next time you paint don't just go with 1 coat though. Put a light coat on first. Like a fog coat/mist. Don't try to cover it all on the first coat. Light coat then a medium coat and 1 heavy coat to finish it. That way you want have any runs. Or not as many that is. And it helps keep the Orange peel down. Now I'm not knocking your paint job bro so please don't take it that way. Because for what it is, it does look good. Keep it up

Try laying your paint on in layers. Start with a really light layer that doesn't give you full coverage. Then apply a medium coat. Lastly, apply a wet coat but not so wet you create a run. Much better than one super thick coat.

I think it came out pretty decent, maybe next time cut back on the fluid if that sprayer has an adjustment for it, the orange peel is just from it going on too heavy, but hey, it's a learning curve with a new prayer no matter what the brand or style

  • @solaris736
    @solaris736 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yea the particles of paint coming from the rattle can are smaller per drop of paint than the electric gun is, that's odd, usually the opposite, but, to be frank, who cares, lol, that's what wet sanding is for, curing that paint for one to four weeks, then giving it a good wet sand, even the 2x times worse orange peel that the paint has prior to drying would still be perfect afterwords! Also I'm sure you probably know this, but a light coating of paint first helps the following coats adhere better, which helps to be able to add more coats easier, reducing potential running from too thick of a coat, and allows for better results when cured wet sanding while having a thicker paint overall to work with

That looks damn good young man.
Don’t forget to paint the “ hood jams “ when you paint the door jams. I saw that turqouise color in there. Something else to remember. I once had an old pickup back in the late 70’s when I was in High School that I painted with tractor paint. Whenever I would pass a cornfield or an alfalfa field I would hafta struggle with the steering wheel to keep the truck on the road. It kept wanting to get off the road and go out in the field and work. That taught me to never paint another vehicle with International red. Be careful! 👨‍🌾

Not too bad for using that spray gun. I think the biggest problem you had was the wind. Being windy, it forced you to spray heavier to compensate for it. Still though, I gotta hand it to ya for your efforts, a paint job for the lack of equipment or not isn't for the faint of heart. I have a 02 Honda Accord, I would like to paint it one day, it's been years since I repainted and fixed a car up. Great going man, you did good.

A good tip for the seals is to wedge a thick piece of string under, it'll hold the seal up. You can wrap your tape over the edge of the seal, when you lay your paint it'll go underneath where the seal will sit.

You should always mix the paint in the can well before ever pouring it out to mix. Pro tip I have been painting cars for 25 years. Damn fine paint job for outside with an electric sprayer. I have always wondered if it works. Now I know.

I used the same gun on a cabinet job. Came out awesome. It is a crappy cheap gun that can be difficult at times. Over spray everywhere. Make sure you refill when you are down to 1/3 of the cup or it will spit all over your work. Make sure you lube it or it will stick and make a bzzzzzzzzzz sound. On sale it goes for $15 regular price is $25. If you can get yourself a better user friendly gun. For the price its great.

You are a brave man 😎 im thinking about flipping a few cars in my spare time, i will buy one with a terrible paintjob to start out with and use it to lower the price! I love painting, mostly because you get a feel for the car, and the results comes out instantly ❤ so a few mechanical issues and a shitty paint will be the first project! I painted alot of stuff with rattlecans, mostly scooters and inside car trim so om not new to this ! Thanks for the video i enjoyed every minute! 😁
