Why Can't We Remember Being Babies?

  • Why can't we recall being born? It was kind of a big day, so you'd think we'd remember. Anthony looks at how the inner workings of a baby's brain differs from that of a full grown adult.

      When I was 5 I was learning in school that "C" sometimes makes an "S" sound, so I got home from school and while my mom wasn't looking, I grabbed a crayon, hopped on the sofa and wrote "CACA" on the wall. I proudly asked my mom "Whats that spell?" and she goes "Caca?" and I smugly said "No! Casa!!!"

      My earliest memory was at age two (around 25 to 26 months old). Honestly, even at age two, I probably couldnt remember anything from before I turned two, cause i never remembered the injection I received at eighteen months of age even when I was two, but I can still remember the first time I experienced real pain, which was at age two. My offset of childhood amnesia luckily hit me as early as possible, though any memories I have from ages two to five are snippets.

    When I first became aware, I was 3. It was summer, I woke up and for the first time, I was aware of it. It was the weirdest thing. I knew that I was in my room, I knew my mother was my mother and my sister's names. I knew daddy. But I knew that for some reason, that day was different than before and I never forgot it.

    Babies brains certainly do not function like anyone else's. I remember my earliest memory. I couldn't even walk yet. I literally remember trying to move from one point to another by rocking on my stomach. I also remember trying to hold a botle with one hand and unable to figure out why I couldn't do it. I remember being in a walker. I remember playpens and cribs. And I remember what I was thinking when I was in daycare (about 3 years old) as well as specific events.
    I remember a previous life as well but that seems to be a different topic altogether. I don't actually remember being born though. I must have been asleep.

      So I'm not the only one remembering more than most people do from super young age xD I do notice at times some memory comes back after seeing a particular place or smelling something particular. Even sounds sometimes do the trick. The main benefit I figure for this memorizing (in my case very visual) is knowing how huge and threatening an environment may be at that age. Things most adults forget.

They annoyed everyone with their tales of Christians believing in reincarnation (but everyone knew that made no sense). I finally got tired of them being such ear leeches and threw them all to the lions. The whole Kingdom rejoiced at their demise.

    I always ponder this question. Similarly we never remember the beginning of a dream either. It's equally challenging to imagine my own death without just seeing "darkness" or black. It's very difficult to separate consciousness from existence. Almost as if we've always been. Maybe I'm just rambling with philosophical ideas. But it is interesting none the less.

    • @birdwing2414
      @birdwing2414 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think the reason why so many people think of death as darkness or blackness is because humans perceive the world through vision which requires light. So when our surroundings are dark, we don’t know where we are and what is happening. This is why people use the expression lost in the dark when they don’t know what’s going on. For many people, death is considered the end of life and everything and it is a strange state where your mind no longer exists yet death does not mean to lose your mind, so the next best reasoning is that it is fragmented and drifting through metaphorical darkness.

    • @rockyyams
      @rockyyams ปีที่แล้ว

      It's interesting when we put our little minds to the test.
      Our minds try to fool us that we may 'know' ..but we really don't. We don't know sh*t.

    • @rockyyams
      @rockyyams ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@birdwing2414 That's true.
      And also because humans have a natural inclination to fear what is unbeknownst.
      I have a personal view of death tho, which I think most people do, too.
      You just go back to where you were before birth: which was/is nowhere.
      💀

    • @alexstone9099
      @alexstone9099 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I believe that we have 'always been'. Our bodies are composed of matter that has been moving around, recomposed, recycled and somehow all is brought together into cells which know to create a living organism. How crazy is that. And somehow from all of that emerges consciousness, now that is pretty damn amazing. I think in that darkness we have always existed, maybe not as our own person, but all the fragmented parts of us I think have always had a perhaps dormant consciousness which comes to life when fueled with the energy given to us by our parents and I believe that we are composed of many different pieces which all come together to form life, and somehow life knows to create life and that is just remarkable. I love rambling and talking about this stuff. Would love to hear you or anyone else's thoughts if you read this, as you I love to ponder this as well ever since I was little these things have always amazed me.
      All of this also leads us to the question of, if we are composed of matter which has somehow 'always existed', then how did it come into existence in the first place? I suspect the answer is something outside of certainly my, and I suspect most current human comprehension, but its still worth thinking about.

Just recently we found a photo album containing pictures of that old house and the photos matched my memories from when I lived there being 3 and younger.

    I started pre-school at / nursery at 3, but I remember things way before than that. I can safely say that I still have memories from at least my 2 year old self. And not hazy memories, clear memories that other people at home have verified to be true. Neighbours and their kids, a trip to a hill-station, my younger brother as a newborn, a family function. I even remember my fu***** dreams from back then. A recurrent one with airplanes - sometimes real, sometimes toy airplanes. And if I force myself to remember before that, I sometimes get headaches. True story. I'm 32 now.

    I have several memories of my Mother, she died (Leukemia) 5 months after I turned 2yrs old.
    I told my father, he said it wasn't my memories it was from hearing about her... till I drew a floor plan of the house we lived in... before she died & moved not long after she passed... My father was stunned to see my floor plan was correct right down to where furniture was placed.

    I remember being in the military chanting: WE MUST SWIM, WE MUST FIGHT, WE MUST COMPLETE HUMAN LIFE. 600,000 of us were swimming to our potential other half. Many died along the way. Finally, limitlessly tired from the long swim, we saw the egg. Suddenly we turned against each other. We fought and swam so we could fertilize the egg. It was then that I understood the true meaning of the chant. Then, out of my hundreds of thousands of close colleges and friends, I made it to the egg and was known there on as the first survivor of testicular training camp. Eventually a second winner emerged but we'll get to that later. Let's just say that I didn't end up in a napkin like most of my brethren.

    My first memory is when my mom kept consoling me to get me to stop crying. She shoved baby food at my mouth and picked me up to try to burp me. Then she realized that I was fixated on my sister who was watch the Smurfs on TV, but still crying. So she put me back in my portable sleeping chair and put me next to my sister where I was facing my sister. I immediately stopped crying and I remember being so fascinated with my sister and her reactions to the show she was watching. Now this seems pretty detailed memory but I was about 5-7 months old at this point.

    I have confirmed memories from as early as 6 months old. They're pretty fuzzy but they're there. I was self conscious and speaking grammatically by roughly a year. My boyfriend was the same way, which his mom can confirm. Yet nearly all the people I ask can't remember anything before first grade. I have several theories as to why, but sceptics don't enjoy entertaining the possibilities. Really, all of your early memories are still accounted for, they're just more difficult to access because remembering them requires a state of heightened tranquility similar to the "daydream" state infants/toddlers usually function in. By the time people reach school age, their minds are rapidly filled with the stimulus and rigid information enforced by authority figures such as teachers. This rapid intake of rules and knowledge is intended to mold us to a functional standard in society, but in order to make room for the newly enforced concepts, children's minds must discard the old daydreaming pattern of thought, thus forgetting attached sensations and memories.

Then I looked around to see that I was in the front door about to go to preschool with my sisters watching tv next to me. But in some of those events that flashed through my mind, I saw what looked like a past life. I remember interacting with a family unlike my own, and living in a completley different area. My earliest memory is being born. I know it sounds crazy, but I do. Not what I saw, but what was going on in my mind at the time. Keep in mind that I thought in feelings at this time and not words so the words I use are ones that I've put to it after the fact. This is the memory... I'm excited. I know I'm about to be born and take my first breath of air. Being in the womb is comforting and my mother's heartbeat is soothing to me. Then I'm born, I take my first breath of air and it's exhilarating! But then I realize I have to keep breathing. It scares me. I realize I have to keep breathing and breathing is hard. I worry about what if I forget to breathe and I die. This is why I cried.
    I also have several other early childhood memories, like being weaned, playing with toys, the flavor of carpet and teething toys, learning to talk, and my younger sister being born when I was 2.5 years old. My sense of time during early childhood was not good, my thought process was very advanced, my ability to learn was AMAZING, I know I was not born as a blank slate, there were things I knew instinctively, and other things I figured out for myself very quickly that no one ever had to tell me. Sorry for the long post, this is the best abbreviation I could do. Also, remember, just because I was like this as a baby doesn't mean all babies are like this. Every baby is different. These are just my memories.

    Well, I don't know about you guys, but I can certainly remember being a baby. I can also remember being surprised when I found out most people can't!
    My earliest recollection is as a babe in arms being carried in to see the animals in the zoo. I caught sight of a little monkey over my father's shoulder, which my parents could not see. I tried to tell them to turn around and look at the monkey, but all I could do in communication was wriggle around a lot and make wa-wa noises....which was very frustrating, not just for me, but for my parents too. They were sure I was trying to TELL them something!! I was just 9-months old at that time.
    Other things I remember happened when I was still very young took place when I was 18-months, (visit to cinema that didn't go too well) and being just over two years (stayed with cousins without my mummy and daddy).
    Hmmm.... I will soon be 70, and things are different! Sometimes I have trouble remembering things that happened last week... (sigh). All the same, those early memories are still sharp as ever.
    Note: Because I knew what people were saying from the time of being about 9-months, and had full self-awareness, I do not talk "baby talk" to any babies I meet. Of course I keep it simple, but I always use proper sentences, and refer to them as a person, like...... "Hello, John. It's nice to see you."

      eon star Yes. And sometimes the memories are not original, but things you have heard repeatedly from the family whilst growing up... "learned" memories, if you like. "Why can't we remember being babies" people can but it's uncommon, i remember being 2 years old, i even remember before being 2, i remember when my bedroom was being painted and i remember my cradle it was brown, and no videos or pictures where used to trigger these memories, i asked my mom when this happened, and she said i was only 9 months old! this is making me angry how people say it's impossible, how can you tell what a person can or cannot remember? you can't prove to someone you can remember something, it's something only you know and only you know and that no one else can find out, you can't prove your memories either, how can you prove to someone that you remember being a baby? they're very blurry, but a memory is a memory, i remember my parents fixing the tiles and re-doing the tiles on the kitchen floor and i always loved staying in the kitchen so i know these aren't false memories, and i asked my mom what age i was when it happened, she said i was 9 months old, that was in 1996, i was 0 years old in 1996, you can't define an age when a person can start remembering, i can barely remember yesterday yet i can strongly remember every year that happened sense i 9 months old, my mom confirmed that these events actually happened, so i'm not having false memories, these are true memories and my mom said it was true i was in the kitchen on the day they where fixing the kitchen tiles and i was in my room when they where painting my room, and i remembered that i used to have a rug in my room and i remember my parents putting it down, i was 9 months old when this happened, my mom said it actually happened so it's an actual memory of being a baby.If you take the time to remember events you can re-call them, just because they're in the back of your thoughts doesn't mean those memories are non-existent, i was never able to re-call these memories before, so your memory doesn't get worse as people age, it always stays the same, it's just adults are busy with work and don't have time to re-call old memories from being a baby/toddler/child, your memory is always there to begin with, it improves when you're around the age 5, but it was always there, older memories are harder to re-call because we get too busy with our lives to remember older events.I'm living proof that you can remember below the age of 2, so it's possible, i remember the toy i played with as a baby, it had a fish in it, that was the only video tape i watched as a child, and when i watched the tape as a child i could re-call events of me playing with the toy, my mom said that i loved that toy and played with it all the time.

    I remember. As a baby I didn't think in language. Everything was emotions translated into imagery and feeling. Bad was a stainless steel pad. Good was soft. My first memory was my mom dropping me in the crib, walking away and turning the light off. When she walked out the door she left it cracked open a little and the hallway light was shining in. She was angry (steel wool, lighting jagged, inside a black cloud, scared) I must have been crying and I don't remember moving around much.

    I can't remember myself being born, but I CAN remember myself as a baby, being carried around by my mother.
    There are people who can remember their own birth, and I suspect that everyone can, subconsciously, and that's why we assume a foetal position in bed, remembering being in the womb.
    I also think that the way they circumcize baby boys without any anaesthetic gives them pychological problems for life, quite apart from being unable to perform sex properly when they grow up.

    The earliest memory I can remember, was when I was 3 years old. I had broken my left arm (still have stitch scars from the surgery, many years later) and I remember scenes, here and there. It started off as I was in my living room, and it was night. I was wearing this blue Cinderella dress, and spinning in circles, delighted, and the world started to spin as I got dizzy and disoriented, and a blank spot in my memory. Then I remember sitting in the back of our car. My dad sat to my left, holding my broken arm. My mom rushed me to the hospital, and then a gap in my mind. Then I’m in my living room a month or so later, bouncing around, unfazed. My left arm was in a bright pink cast, covered in writing, my mother or grandmother (can’t remember) sitting on the couch, watching me. And that’s it.

    my earliest memories are from when i was 2. probably when my family and i went to china. i don't remember the order, but i have a few memories from the flights, once i was crying because my ears hurt, i think that's when we were about to land in hong kong, in another flight my parents had separate seats, so i had to sit with my dad, and my brother got to sit with my mom, in the middle of it i started to cry cuz i wanted to sit with my mom. and one day in hong kong i was left with my great aunt because my parents had to go to the chinese consulate or something and i wanted bubblegum but i didn't know how to say it in cantonese, and my great aunt couldn't understand me so i started to cry. lol all of them are about me crying xD

    It depends how you define baby. Birth to three months is newborn. Three months to whatever age you begin walking: (ranges anywhere from eight months old to eighteen months old) is considered an infant, and walking age to twenty-four months is considered as a toddler; ages twenty-four months to sixty months is cusp between being a toddler as well as being a preschooler, so pretty much ages twenty-four months to sixty months means it is undetermined if you are actually considered as a baby. Earliest memories can range anywhere from ages two to eight, with not remembering anything before five as normal, and also many cases where people dont remember before ages nine and ten, and a few claiming they can remember before the age of two.

    So, I have two memories of being a baby. One I was on bed like a baby of a few months, with hands and legs moving uncontrollably. My dad came along and played a bit then he moved to my cousin who was next to me, another baby. I started to cry and felt what today I call jealousy. When I tell people of this memory they usually don't believe me. I just find hard to understand how a baby already can feel jealousy… The other memory I was on bed once again, maybe around the same age and people were passing by in the room, I don't know what they were doing then my dad (again) came close and played with me…anybody else who has such early memories?

    In my first memory, I was three. I was on the sidewalk in front of my parents' house and there was a thunderstorm moving in. I remember that part because I was startled by a clap of thunder and it surprised me because I had been through thunderstorms before and had heard thunder before, but it had _never_ been that loud. I had never imagined that thunder could be loud, but then I _was_ only three.

    My earliest memory is of my first birthday party at my grandparents house. I remember eating this huge chocolate frosted cake with an enormous '1' candle stuck in it (it was actually just a frosted cupcake). I remember making an absolute mess eating it with my hands, smearing icing all over the booster seat tray I was sitting at. The house smelled like cake and sweets, buttercream icing and such, but I remember it being such an intense smell. It was like smelling something absolutely incredible for the very first time. I remember then looking around at my grandparents old second house as it was in 1995, my mother who was close to me had a perfume on that I'm sure 80's and 90's kids can remember their parents wearing... with the memory jumping forward an hour or so to me crying, my father (who had brown hair) picking me up, taking me upstairs, turning right then left before setting me down in a crib and calming me down. I remember seeing the tiny red blinking LED light of a fire alarm on the ceiling before the memory goes fuzzy

    I’m 15 my first memory I was three and my little brother was getting suffocated by another baby. I remember everything from 3 through 10 other than that things get a little fuzzy when it comes to my memory. The scary thing about relying on my memory is if someone tells me enough times that I did something that I didn’t do or was impossible for me to do I will start to question myself or believe it. So safe to say I’m not the most reliable source.

    I remember being 2 days old. I was born with many medical issues and what I remember is really a picture and feelings. With the picture I now know what things were that I didn't know what they were then, like all the wires hooked up to me. I also saw the nurse come in but didn't know who she was (or he I just know it was a person in a white coat off to the side). I couldn't move didn't know what anything was until I saw my mom come in, I knew who she was (though I probably didn't know the word mom but you know what I mean) I knew I felt safe with her and happy. Again these words...I didn't know then I was a newborn but I remember the picture of what I saw and feelings I felt. When my mom left, I had no idea she was coming back, I cried and was scared. I described it all in detail to my mom and she was able to pick out the time I remembered, 2 days old.
    Though the next memory I know my exact age, I was 5 and got stung by a bee. I do remember some things I had to have been 3 or 4 years old for, like my great-grandfather and granny us taking walks, having fun together. He passed away shortly after I turned 5 but I still remember him though I remembered how he made me feel, he was very nice. I did remember his big ears though but couldn't remember how he looked otherwise but have since been shown a pic, giving credit to the saying that people will always remember how you make them feel, so very true.
    What happened between that brief moment at 2 days old and around 3 or 4? I have no idea! xD
    Ad that was long :p

      I don't remember colors of things, the nurse coat was white and the wires were black, everything else was probably shades of gray. I didn't say I saw them come in, the nurse wasn't far from me and I don't know exact distance I saw the nurse and my mom it's not like I could measure then, they probably were close. I know what I remember and it doesn't really matter if no one believes me.

      Dynshi Actually I remember a room in what I have been in a less than a month old. I remember my cradle, the friendly faces, actually I do remember they all talked to me and I answered - but nobody could understand what I was saying. They just keeped on talking they way. I remember the ceiling, the large bookshelves till the ceiling, all the books in them. and a door. People went from one door to another across the room - I saw just their shoulders and heads, and the squares of the doors. I was just for one day in that room, that apartment. When I was brought there second time, I was 3 or 4, the apartment was renovated, the doors were at different point at that time. I asked my grandma, when I was 20 or so, about the door, she was very suprised, said, there is no way, I could remember this. But later my aunt, the owner of the apartment, said, that it was renovaited, when I was six months old or so. So I'm not quite sure about what scientists believe a baby CAN see, because of my memories - they are to clear and have tooo much details. Not quite sure about the colors - all my childhood photos are b/w. My mom brought me some photos, I haven't seen before - age six months to two - and I knew exact all colors of my clothing. I don't remember clothes, that I have worn a year or two ago, but that memories are just like... maybe tooo precious to forget?

    I have memories from before I was 6 months old. We moved from Chicago when I was 6 months old, I have described scenes in my mind and my family tells me it was Chicago. I can describe parts of the house, the tree and swing set outside the window when a lady would pick me up to look out of it. I can describe people that we didn't know after leaving, including the babysitter. I remember a lot of stuff from then up to now, but don't remember everything. I remember my parents holding and carrying me. I remember waiting for my brother to come home from school, I started school when I was 5. I remember being at the car dealership in 1968 when my parents bought a car when I was 3. But I don't remember the moon landing, who knows I may not have seen it on TV. I suffered an injury when I was 4 and don't remember it. I remember my first day of kindergarten and my teachers name. It amazes me that people don't remember being a child.

    my youngest memory was when I was about 2-3 years old and I was the third and last child at that time. I remember my mother spoon-feeding me and a tear fell from my eyes and she asked me why I cried and I said "I thought you only care about Tata and Yanyan - my elder siblings.

      😞 my baby def knows when it's time to go bye bye. My poor munchkin. She's somexs cries when I gotta leave her for the day. I kinda wish she could talk. But she expresses her emos in other ways. Like hiding her head in my chest when she's tired, sad & what not. 🥰 I wuv her so much. Somexs she's over me & gets distracted by the kids at the church's school when I drop her off. Those kids love her. But somexs they leave as she's getting dropped off & she so looks disappointed. Her stare somexs follows me going outside the p.lot & 🥰💔

    I actually have a couple of vivid memories of me as a baby, though no idea what exact age those memories happened. I have snippets as early as 18 months to 25 months, but the 25 months memory is the one guaranteed to be true as it was in the summer of 1999. I am 21 years and 11 months old. Just cause this guy cant remember being a baby doesnt mean it is automatically official nobody can remember being a baby. Some adults dont remember anything before the age of 10 while some can remember from age 2 onwards.

I can also remember the physical layout of all of the items on the playground like the sandbox, the merry-go-round, etc. I remember the smiling face of my wonderful, caring teacher. I remember the hopeful and carefree feeling of being an innocent child, eager to discover everything I could about the world and all it offered. I remember being happy. Then, over the years, I recall difficult life events happening to me, one by one. Deaths of loved ones, divorce, betrayal, addiction. I remember all of the resulting feelings and emotions turning me into the antisocial, cynical, and depressed asshole I am now. Thanks, D-News.
