I think it creeps us out because, staring can be intimidating. Staring aren't ment to be a friendly gesture usually (depends on their facial expression). I can't stand stares to be honest.
The answer is late but I will tell you anyway. People think that way because it once served for the sake of survival. It makes them anxious because it reminds them of a predator preying upon them. Sociopaths for example do not have this issue because they have a reduced sense of fear.
I think it's because staring suggests intent on the part of the person staring. You don't know what their motivation for staring at you is. That makes you think whatever their intent is, it's apt to be unpleasant.
Gabriel Guzman You just admittedly and deliberately directed your attention on something besides yourself like an another individual because you were so called bored then act as if you never knew they were never there. No.. you allowed yourself to become distracted/grossly preoccupied with the subject to the extent that you forgot what you were doing. I hear that “zoning out” excuse all the time when people are guilty of it at a gym. If you had proper mind and muscle and connection you would focus on your workout not someone else’s body or eyeballs. That’s horse shit. You are fully conscious of what you are doing
One time I was sitting in my back yard and I had this feeling something was watching me. I kept glancing around to see if anything was there when suddenly I spotted this little wood rodent just transfixed on me. When I stared back at it he just scampered into the woods.
no thats just because the person who is really being waved at is behind you and so when a wave is sent that direction you just assume its for you because its directed towards you

It's like a cant do this curtain thing.or eat this curtain thing.feel this emotion.or hold this curtain thing at a curtain place. I was so steamed when I saw another girl stare when I looked down from the upstairs floor. I just need to talk because there was this other guy who did not take his eye off of me when I was sitting at a bench near the pier. Maybe if a didn't have a drink in my hand. I had a lid then it broke. I mean like I wish people would not stare for a long time. But I know that they are not thinking about me as much as I think that they are. Lol! A while ago, during a test in social studies, I whispered to the girl next to me to quit staring at my paper, and sure enough, she wasn't even looking in my direction!
Smoking weed has done a lot to me. It's made me think I'm schizophrenic. It's made me think I'm a psychopath. It makes me think that everybody is looking at me all the time and my peripheral vision tells my mind that that face to my left is staring directly at me even though it's not. But weed is not to blame. My own brain is to blame
0:38 "If you hold up two or three fingers you probably can't see what fingers you're holding up, but you can tell that there's something there". Yeah, I can tell there's something there because I'm MOVING my OWN fingers. That sentence made me facepalm so hard I've lost brain cells.
It's called primal gaze detection. It's a "6th sense" if you will. We all have this instinct. It means someone or something is looking at you with some kind of intentions, either bad or good. Could be a guy who likes your butt or a girl who is jealous of your looks.. could be a serial killer who wants to chop you up... Just trust your gut and you'll be fine : )
Sabrina Cavallaro "Ehhh still doesn't make sense considering I've been woken up by my sister staring at me, and my eyes were closed xD" Agreed, so much. It's happened more than once too.
I just experienced some weird thing. I was going to my fridge, it was dark in the kitchen. I saw a woman walk by out side in the dark. So I thought I wait a few seconds to open my fridge. She had an hoody covering her whole head, so I was looking out to see she walk on, but she Stopped suddenly and pulled away her hoody and looked my directly in the eyes. It was totally scary and creepy, What is that thing ? I have seen it also when I drive on the highway, I look at some woman walking there 300 meters away and she turns head and looks me dead in the eye whilst doing 65 on the freeway.
Answer is because of the fact that predators usually Stare at their prey before striking, this is learned by other animals which is why almost every animal looks back to make sure they don't get attacked. This is common in humans too.
When I was little, everything I looked at looked like it was staring back at me. Especially if that object was a toy with eyes like my doll or the pic of the slightly less creepy than usual clown in the front of that infamous jack in the box I would play with as a child.
What I don't understand is why I can feel someone looking at me during lunch at school that's like 30 yards away and completely behind me, not even in my peripheral vision. I always catch people staring, it's weird.
I hate being stared at and when I look around for someone staring at me I am usually right about that even if they are behind me it actually pisses me off and I feel as if it is an insult when someone stares at me for a certain period of time and usually when I look at someone at the same time when they look at me we have a stare off for a little bit(usually the one with a stare that scares the other causes the guy being stared at to look away) I've even seen other animals do this.
awesome1ru That's not confidence, that's fear. He was afraid that the person staring at him was somehow insulting him so he got defensive and aggressively stared back. Anger is always fear and/or feelings of inadequacy (low self esteem) in disguise. American media portrays violent people as fearless and sexy but in reality people like that are cowards who can't admit to themselves that they're insecure.

Humans are unique in that the whites of our eyes are clearly visible. That high contrast makes it much easier to quickly determine the exact direction of our gaze.
I read a really cool study once, and I wish I could find it again, about how when we think someone is watching us we will sometimes start to give off ques and that person will actually start to watch us after a while (providing they aren't distracted from the ques we are giving). It's pretty neat! Our social brains are interesting!
You know whats creepy is when you dont think someones lookin at you but then you turn your head to one place and someone starin at you from the car , then you move your gase to some window and theres person staring at you. Like 2-3 places in a row. Is kinda enough to get you freak out.
I stare at people to observe their appearances. Sometimes I get caught up in staring at them and they look at me weirdly before leaving wherever I am, or trying to ignore me. Usually I get embarrassed and stop. It's just that I think it's interesting how so many people can look different when we're all from the same species, humans. It's weird that we humans have genetically different appearances when some animals, say flies, all look identical.

If you are male staring at females, or female staring at males thats normal. If you are dude who staring on other dudes = u are gay or bisexual gay. And if they are not gay/bisexual its pretty normal for them to look away because they are not intrested in u at all. Sometimes ppl look away because they find u ugly.
That's perpetuating a bad stereotype. You only hear about the people that had bad experiences, not the thousands and thousands of tourists that have a genuinely good time.
I've always wondered why chavs always turn around constantly, maybe they've developed an enhanced version of this and use it when looking for prey, but if you don't react to them neither do they to you.
I was coming back from high school 2 other high school guys started starring at me they stared at me for like 3 minutes I felt like they will bully me in couple of minutes I was on motorbike it was high traffic when I maintained a good distance with them I loudly said to them son of bitches and they started running towards me and I put my bike in first gear and I went home fast as I can that was the most uncomfortable moment I ever had yet.
You sir, are astute. I specialize in human and animal behavior and the reason animals "lock on" to you when you stare is a self preservation instinct. We have 2 forward facing eyes - most predators have. This is enough to freak out any animal... including humans. It's why we feel uneasy when someone stares at us. We feel like the prey. Not blinking suggests that a target has been locked onto, like a big cat stalking it's prey, it never takes it's eyes off its target.
I love to stare people in the eye I used to hate it but now I’m way more confident I’m never nervous around super attentive popular people staring at people is a great way to boost your confidence because 99 percent of people feel week whenever you look them dead in there eyes trust me people who are reading this comment who struggle with confidence do this
As a film student, I could tell that the background was greenscreened in the close-up. Btw, love the acting and creative ways you guys present this stuff! It's interesting, engaging, and it makes me wanna hug you. Hugs~
De-oxygenated blood is not blue. It is dark red. This can be seen when you have a blood-sample taken as the tube they use to extract your blood is a vaccum with no oxygen in it, and they draw from a vein not an artery. It appears blue because the fat layers in your body filter the red light as it passes through them and you see a blue color. This is also why you can blush red- capilaries are close to the surface of your skin beyond the fat layer, so this red-filtering does not occur.
Exactly. We were evolved to notice everything, seeing as we're so helpless otherwise. I mean, look at us. We have thin, unprotected skin, no claws, flat teeth, run ridiculously slow for our size (due to the way our knees are), small ears, almost nonexistent smell, and we taste delicious (in fact, cannibals say we taste like pork). The list goes on and on. And we're expected to survive? This is why we're so sensitive with this kind of stuff.
So I wonder how things like pictures of people staring at us effect us. Is my brain freaking out right now because under the "Related Videos" section there are a bunch of people seemingly staring at me?
Easiest way to figure our creepiness with staring is to look at early humans in the wild. Predatory animals (wolves, lions, etc.) have their eyes towards the front, as opposed to prey animals (Deer, rabbit, etc.) with eyes to the side of their heads. The eyes in front focus on hunting, the eyes on the side is gazing/keeping watch for predators. It seems pretty obvious that we feel weird about staring because we feel like we're targeted or watched by a predator/someone who wants to hurt us. Its primarily a survival mechanism.
"Don't go thinking it's ESP or anything like that" .. gaze perception? Well yeah, it's perfectly valid I guess, but then again, SO IS ESP! lol - any reason that our perception of being stared at, that 'weird feeling' couldn't be a combination of both? as in, yes, sometimes it's your gaze perception. Oh, and sometimes it's your intuition, or latent esp - which, btw, is inherent in all of us.
It is extra sensory perception in many cases. In many cases it has nothing to do with peripheral vision because some people have their eyes completely closed or someone directly behind them staring at them and they can still "feel" the stare pretty much the moment the staring begins. However science believes that ESP doesn't exist, so they will come up with any explanation that doesn't involve ESP. Our technology and science is still very primitive compared to what's possible.
Okay, so in my school there 's this girl and if she catches me looking even slightly in her direction she accuses me of staring at her, and this has been going on for two years and I'm annoyed
am i the only person who sees cars as faces?
No.
They're planning to attack
Haha, I do too.
They are watching, waiting for us to walk by so they can back up into us.
Abdulrahman Al-Hoshan no I do lmao
A guy pulled a knife at me one time just for staring at him
what have you learned from that experience?
Never open your eyes again, son

why where u staring at him?
umar soto don't stare at people

I think it creeps us out because, staring can be intimidating. Staring aren't ment to be a friendly gesture usually (depends on their facial expression). I can't stand stares to be honest.
Guess that makes sense. I go straight to anger if stared at instead of anything else..lol.

***** that's a really BAD explination

I would have thought it had something to do with identifying predators (because predators tend to stare intently at their prey)
That explains everything. I see u all as prey. I'm so fucked up
+Jason Black I'm with you
Yeah that's why our brain looks for faces in case of predators.
That's what he meant with the "be ready to fight" part
and this explains why people think we are waving at them even though we are waving at someone behind them lol
no thats just because the person who is really being waved at is behind you and so when a wave is sent that direction you just assume its for you because its directed towards you

Yeah they really need to have more accurate titles. Like this video should be called "why we feel we're being stared at" or something similar.
Truth!
I think the title is more like a "Click me, you always wondered this"

I was coming back from high school 2 other high school guys started starring at me they stared at me for like 3 minutes I felt like they will bully me in couple of minutes I was on motorbike it was high traffic when I maintained a good distance with them I loudly said to them son of bitches and they started running towards me and I put my bike in first gear and I went home fast as I can that was the most uncomfortable moment I ever had yet.
The response of yawning when you see someone (or something) else yawn. That primal reaction has always fascinated me.
thumbnail gives chills
You sir, are astute. I specialize in human and animal behavior and the reason animals "lock on" to you when you stare is a self preservation instinct. We have 2 forward facing eyes - most predators have. This is enough to freak out any animal... including humans. It's why we feel uneasy when someone stares at us. We feel like the prey. Not blinking suggests that a target has been locked onto, like a big cat stalking it's prey, it never takes it's eyes off its target.

Goddamnit Trace, I sometimes watch Dnews at 1.00 AM, my brain tells to sleep, but I just can't stop watching Dnews
This kid in social studies stares at me non stop, even when I made eye contact and looked away he held the stare...That's another class I dread :)
It depends on what's doing the staring. For instance it's not the least bit creepy if a kitten stares at you, it's just cute.
Somebody's looking at me??
Communicate or get ready to fight!
Is my brain freaking out right now because under the "Related Videos" section there are a bunch of people seemingly staring at me?
in the age of social media ,if you feel creeped out by someone staring you down then you might not be touching enough grass...
Omg lol the joke about the girl in the back staring at people is me! I just love people watching its so interesting
I open my eyes as wide as I can and stare from my tanned car at people that are passing by.
For some reason this episode really scared me.
I spend too much time daydreaming to be worried about who's or isn't looking at me.
Im not creeped out by staring I asked people when someone is watching me bc I wanna know what part of me there looking at me
enjoy the feeling? or enjoy the fact you're being looked at?
I tend to stare off into space and daydream a lot, so people often assume that I'm staring at them when I'm not.
so when someone stare you up and down you get back and shout at them? really, doesn't sound very normal to me.
Okay, so in my school there 's this girl and if she catches me looking even slightly in her direction she accuses me of staring at her, and this has been going on for two years and I'm annoyed
I have never been the subject of being stared. I do not know what it is like to be the subject of someone else's stares.
