    This game just looks absolutely timeless. You constantly see people trying to capture the 3D Sonic aesthetic, with games like ROBO BLAST 2, those TH-cam 3D Sonic3&K animations etc.
    And people forget that, STF did it unironically already. What makes it so lovely is the use of large polygons but great art direction. No aisiling etc. Instead of trying to cover up the sharp corners of 90s 3D, they embraced it and it never gets old.

      This game had a lot of personality that I liked. Combining the colorful cast of Sonic with the action of Virtua Fighter was a good idea. And it still felt very cartoony too with faces being squashed from big attacks and stuff like that

    Not really an animator myself but i do wanna gush about the animation! Sonic's design is reminiscent of rubberhose cartoons like Mickey Mouse, the gloved hands, round body and noodle limbs! Rubberhose animation is different because it stretches proportions and squashes anatomy (squash and stretch) breaking the boundaries of what is physically possible to get slapstick violence or exagerrated emotion (ex. Being able to pull on espio's tongue, fists becoming bigger with every punch to emphasize the hit, bodys getting squashed to emphasize being hit). Sonic the fighters is impressive to me cause they actually got sonic's animation right! He's a rubberhose mascot! Very few 3d games in the modern era use squash and stretch animation (shadow the hedgehog and lost world comes to mind) opting for motion capture animation making sonic look stiff or mascotsuit-like. I really reccommend new frame plus's video on sonic's animation were he goes through each game looking at sonic's animation!!
    Edit: correction

    • @vohloo9797
      @vohloo9797 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'd be really happy if some sonic games leaned closer on the cartoony aspect of the characters. It doesn't have to be the whole game like just use it for gameplay animations or certain comedic moments in the story. I guess one complaint would be the tonal shift if their going for a semi serious story, but I think with a clear distinction of tone they can balance out both aspects.

    • @briegab6491
      @briegab6491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@vohloo9797 I'm still a firm believer in that Sonic Riders had the BEST comedic timing in any of the games. Just view a few of the cutscenes some standout moments are Knuckles' eyes getting dizzy from Tails' science talk, Wave spedup talking while Jet runs away and the whole Amy chasing Sonic around. It's very slapstick and cartoonlike. For gameplay, New Frame Plus puts it best: The worst games always have the best animations. Unleashed's Night levels actually does employ squash and stretch with each attack and platforming you can SEE werehog's form stretch his proportions. Shadow the Hedgehog and Lost world also employs squash and stretch, when shadow kicks or jumps you can see his proportions stretch and in Lost world his bounces and kicks stretches the ball to an oval.
      Recently Sonic Mania also employs squash and stretch, (easier in 2D honestly), the infamous smear frames in the title screen and Mighty's Hammerdrop first comes to mind.
      Anw, ideally it would be lovely if Sonic Team actually joined the best parts all their games have to offer Writing, Animation and Gameplay.

    • @vohloo9797
      @vohloo9797 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@briegab6491 yeah I usually think of riders when it comes to comedy and the werehog always reminded me of Popeye which I guess is because of those principles of animations displayed. The cartoony aspects don't have to be too drastic just small details emphasizing weight and speed (the games you mentioned and a few 3d fan games do it nicely), coupled with a good story and gameplay and we're set.

    This game is peak 90s for me. The music, the art direction, the animation, everything is stylistic perfection and comes together beautifully. The game itself is also pretty fun too even if it is a bit simplistic. The thing with the subnames in the music titles kind of reminds me of how most of the classic Sonic games have these esoteric paragraphs in english on the Japanese box art, they're equally as dramatic and I love them so much. I think this is also the only PlayStation video game I've gotten a Platnium trophy (It's not hard to get one at all for this game, but it's still the only one I've done it for) Also I love Honey the Cat even if she's just like a cat version of a Fighting Vipers character I hope she's used again for literally anything.

    It was crazy how much innovation was going on in the 90s and 2000s. Video games were undergoing a Renaissance. Everyone was in competition in the market and everything was new, not just to the average gamer but to those outside of the gaming sphere. Everyone was suddenly interested in the technology, whether it was the Bit Wars or whatever was going on with the Nintendo DS or the Wii and how we could use parts of that tech everywhere else.

    Honestly, getting a little cliché how we have both had some oddly specific shared interests.
    I vividly remembering talking to my brother one day, and he stated, "Yo, there's this game called Sonic The Fighters on the Xbox Arcade, and it's really easy to get all the achievements." I personally do not care about achievements, but I loved Sonic then, while my brother just didn't really know much of what a 'Sonic' was. So, without question, I played it.
    God, I was addicted, and it was hella fun. I mained Bark the Polar Bear, and I didn't even know that this was his only appearance (I'm disregarding Team Hooligan, I never read any comics).
    It was simple, charming, fun, and it had Sonic. I wasn't the best, but I'd love to try, and I'm not competitive. And after playing it recently in my journey, nothing gives me that nostalgic, cathartic joy of cycloning that smug Air Grabbing and Dropping shit Tail multiple times int the air until he hits the wall, bounces off exaggeratedly, and then proceed to leap to curbstomp with the force of a giant ass polar bear accelerating through the air.
    This game got to the point, in which my friends were like. "Ay bro, you wanna get on Rocket Lea- oh son of bitch. Get off that shit."
    The music is amazing, it's again, charming. My favorite is Tails's Blue Canyon Cruise, despite that smug shit's grab move (I haven't recovered).
    The Squash and Stretch patent is actually really cool! I'm not an animator, but I do understand what this stuff means, and the fact they even decided to create a squash and stretch simulation for the game makes the game so much more... charming.
    It like a second Sonic R to me. I love the short, but immensely enjoyable romp of a game. They both scratch that itch, and I will continue to love and play both games.
    Essentially, if my overuse of one term doesn't tell you my thoughts, Sonic the Fighters may be quite a fun game, and is amazing on most fronts, but more importantly, it's charming.
    Edit] Forgot to mention. I love the Lockheed Martin mention. I'm a big jethead sometimes, and that stuff is always cool as hell.

    I absolutely love this game's art style and expressiveness. Obviously since it's not the most well known, I don't hear much about it, but I do remember some people talking about how the animation was bad. That confused me quite a bit, and assumed that was the prevailing opinion, so it's really nice to see you giving the praise it deserves.

    Whether official or not, if an sequel was ever made for this game they certainly wouldn’t be short on the variety of characters they could use. As well as, how they could give character to the character’s fighting styles. Like giving metal his black sheild and copy ability, make cream’s chao as much of an menace (dps wise) they were in sonic advance, shadow with his guns, vehicles, and chaos abilities, and maybe make sonic’s werehog form from unleash be an unlockable character to name an few ideas.

    I remember Playing this game when I was a kid in Sonic Gems Collection, It was the game I played the most from the game collection. And now revisinting it's soundtrack hits me with nostalgia, I almost teared up listening to "Casino Night (Here We Go)" and "Death Egg's Eye (Never Let It Go)" wich are still my personal favourites.
    One of my favourite details was how you were able to keep hiting characters after K.O. I allways did that when I had the chance.
    I also remember Metal Sonic Being really hard and then EggMan being really easy for some reason.
    This game was a masterpiece for my time!

But one day when me and my Cousin and Grandma and Uncles went to My Brother’s Hospital that was when we knew Sonic The Fighters was the Best Fighting Game I’ve ever played when I was Young as well as Smash Bros Brawl, when me and my Cousin were in my Brothers Hospital Bedroom we saw a Arcade Machine with an Xbox 360 installed in it near the Room so My Brother and Cousin showed it to me and it was Sonic The Fighters playing on the System as soon as me and My Brother and Cousin sat down on the Little Wheel Chairs we knew this was the best game to play at a Hospital me and my Brother and Cousin had so much Fun my Mains were Sonic and Tails while my Brother was Knuckles and my Cousin were Amy we all loved it until when it was time to leave it was Night when we played it and we’ve played it for I think an Hour so when we left I told my Brother “Goodbye it was a really good Game” and never saw him again until 2015 when he was being sent back Home I stayed at Grandmas for a while during the Time so I was excited to see him back. And that’s my Story of when I first Played Sonic The Fighters.

    The intro to the track "Fire Stone," is my absolute favorite in this OST. I wish I still had Gems Collection so I can play this game.

    I played Sonic The Fighters so much on my PS2 together with my friend, we always suffered when fighting Metal Sonic but we always had our way, Sonic Gems Collection it was part of my childhood and I confess that even though it's short it's a game that gave way to the idea of a series of Big Blue fighting games, the scenarios, the songs, a story, moveset, etc. Sonic SmackDown is a promising fangame that can be used as a base, whether it's a Street Fighter, The King of Fighters, Tekken or Virtua Fighters style game, it doesn't matter, what matters is to be a Sonic fighting game with the characters we like, with a good story, fun gameplay and everything that's right.

    Having not played this game I have a lot ofnappreciation for it anyway for its inclusion of Espio and Fang, as well as the introductions of Bean, Bark, and arguably Honey the Cat, I would join a cult dedicated to Honey. I heard a bit of the story of how the game came together from Matt McMuscles who discussed Virtua Fighter's eventual failure in the arcades partially due to oversaturation of Sega fighting games, but this video sheds a lot more light on this part of the puzzle in particular, the game's very existence was a surprising, funny story and the info on how the new characters, Sonic-themed levels and all the other little details came together was laid out wonderfully here, another great video.
    Might be time to knock out two birds in one stone and look into Yakuza finally with Yakuza Judgement so I can get Lost Judgement when it drops and play this game in it, while not the most technically expert fighting game from what I hear, it absolutely bleeds charm and oozes style as you showcase in this video.

    I will always say the Sonic the Fighters is the most underrated 3D Sonic OST out there. Too many people sleep on it. Really wish Sega would at least toy with the idea of a Sonic the Fighters 2. It doesn't need to be competitive, just some stupid fun like the first one.

    Never played this game but it's history and development is amazing. The art style is very good for a 90's 3D video game and looking back at the Saturn-styled SA1 concept art, if that game was made with this art style it would've looked beautiful (I'm not saying it doesn't look beautiful how it is, but if SA1 was made with Classic Sonic and not Modern then I would choose this style to make the game).
