    Yeah CD is great. It's the most unapologetically 90's Sonic game and it's a great reminder of the era he was born in. And thlse animated cutscenes, ooh baby

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hey thanks for watching and I 100% agree, it’s juiced up with 90’s flare all around. About the cutscenes, I saw on TH-cam someone is working on an AI up scaling on it and from what I remember it looked gorgeous. I’ll try to find it

    Finally a TH-camr that isn't saying this game is bad and the worst classic game, I love this game and nobody seems to share that opinion, this review definitely pays justice to this amazing game.
    Also I also prefer the us ost except for stardust speedway and metallic madness

      I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed it! Honestly CD would be my favorite out of the classic games straight up but 3K is just SO excellent it barely etched it out for me. Either way CD is amazing!

      The worst one is 1. not bad but it's obviously the roughest and least sonic like. It lacks the speed with zones made deliberately as a pace breaker and it has a weird difficulty spike.

    • @darkscythe1334

      Yeah i don’t fully understand the dislike of CD. Playing through the Win95 version as a kid I loved the concept and execution. Seeing the different time periods and level of detail, some of the changes over the passage of time (e.g. Tidal Tempest’s water level, broken down badniks). Its clear a lot of thought and passion went into the game. I loved it growing up with the US soundtrack and I was amazed to find that the songs on the Sonic Screensaver release were actually the Japanese soundtrack and fit the past themes like a glove. The only downside of it in my view was the different spin dash wish was updated anyway,

    • @lazedreamor2318

      What if it actually is pretty bad?

  • @HeyFella
    @HeyFella 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    CD had a weird changing relationship with the franchises fans. First it was this almost totally obscure thing, then it became like this cult classic that people claimed was secretly the best one, and now it has this reputation as actually the worst of the classic series. I think it’s current reputation is an overreaction to that infamous IGN video where they claimed Sonic was never really good. One of the people in that video claimed actually that there is a good Sonic game and the one he chose was CD. I think fans of the franchise don’t seem to understand that if you fundamentally don’t like these games much, CD is at least the most interesting aesthetically and mechanically from an outsider game critics perspective. It feels almost like the “art house” Sonic if that makes sense. Fans have a certain expectation as to what these games should be and when hearing that IGN critic they found it easy to scoff at and dismiss the game alongside his comments other than it’s music. I’m one of those people who still holds it in high regard.

    Sonic CD is like Game Apologist says "more of Sonic 1's Green Hill". Level design is great for exploration but the best thing about this game is it's amazing music. If the past tracks weren't PCM, the would be no game and only music (about 85-90% of disc space are music files). Ironic that Sonic Team from Japan went incognito to USA to see what music do they like, made that into Sonic CD and Americans changed the entire OST because they were tired of music from the 90's. Both soundtracks are equally good. I really like the exploration aspect because it makes the game what it is. Without it Sonic CD would be a bland game. Out of all Classic games, I played this one the most and it sure is my 2nd favourite Sonic game (1st is S3&K). My final rating is S/S+.

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's interesting about how they purposely made the tracks PCM to reduce space...when I was researching for my script I couldn't find why they made only the past tracks PCM...interesting! I agree the exploration is the big standout for CD but I feel it gives you enough to keep exploring and not just rush to the exit which is why I had a blast with it. It's also been my most played out of the classics too as there's so much to go back to. I'm currently playing thru 3K and working on the script for that one so that will be up in the near future!

    • @Chillipeffer
      @Chillipeffer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Eldarin It also works out thematically since the pcm was considered older hardware I the Sega CD, so using it to contrast the past period from the rest of the game is a great compromise.

    Sonic CD was probably my first real introduction into the mainline Classic set of games as a kid, and to this day it’s one of my favorite entries in the series. The art direction in this game is my go to for the Classic era, particularly the Bad Futures(which should have been used as an inspiration for Sonic Forces’ zones but whatever). If I could best describe it, it’s like playing through an episode of the SatAm cartoon.
    This is just a go to Sonic game to relax with and have fun.
    Favorite Sonic CD video btw.

    I’ve gained a lot of respect for you. Not just because you you praised the US soundtrack (although I completely disagree with the US bad future and Stardust Speedway tracks being “worse”). But because you didn’t ignorantly bash the other soundtrack like many of those who prefer the JP soundtrack do.
    Also, I don’t care what anyone says. I prefer the US Stardust Speedway Bad Future over the JP version. The Sonic Generations version of the US SSBF ruined the feel of the track.

    While I never played CD back in the day, not having a Mega CD to go with my Mega Drive, I did manage to find a link to download it for the PC later, before getting it with the Gamecube's Gem's collection. However before that, I can remember watching the animated opening and ending constantly on both the Sonic Jam and Mega Collection movie theatre sections, along with the anime OVA/movie trailer which I swear has me imagining hearing Sonikku whenever any character's calling out for help, due to how many time I watched it XD
    I can only wonder what was going on with the localization of CD when it was being brought to America when it came to Amy, especially when you consider that European region got it.
    Sega JPN/EU: This
    Sega US: This

    People always seem to shit on CD for two levels with poorly designed level structure while the rest of the game really puts emphasis on the exploration aspect of the game which I enjoy way more than the overrated sonic 2 and even sonic 3. Sonic CD is my favourite out of the original 4 sonic games (I don’t count sonic and knuckles as it’s own game)

      @tatertot64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I don't think 2 and 3 are overrated, I do agree that people do usually throw the baby out with the bathwater when discussing Sonic CD's level design. I think in small part it is a bit inconsistent, but in large part people go in expecting a rollercoaster, but get a playground. You're getting a merge between Green Hill and Marble. You're not getting Sonic Rush - the latter of which I used to really enjoy for its gameplay, but now see as a bit dry ironically.

    19:20 Fortunately for you (and probably a lot of other people too), there is a trick you can use to skip the entire fight.
    At the start, before you go into the "pinball machine", there is a small ramp up.
    If you max charge a super peel-out and jump at the right time off it, you can jump super high.
    So high, you go over the entire pinball area, and can land after it with a clear shot to the end capsule. Break it, and you are out of there.
    Doesn't work in the remake though. 😢
    The physics engine tweaks made it so you can't get enough height from the jump.

    While it feels like replacing speed as a reward with exploration as a reward isn't quite Sonic, and I've always felt the level design is pretty unpleasant, seeing people speak about what they enjoy in CD's gameplay makes me want to revisit it with a fresh perspective. I'm EXTREMELY grateful that this game exists as we know it. Getting what are basically TWO sequels to Sonic the Hedgehog with two VERY distinct design philosophies is a dream come true as a fan of the series. And Sonic CD is stylish as hell. This is my personal favourite classic Sonic game, while I really like 1,2, 3&K and Mania, I didn't play those games nearly as much as CD, it just has a different feel from other sonic games, and the fact that it's level design was never truly replicated makes it really unique, I mean, technically it's level design was kinda replicated in Sonic Colors, (in fact that's probably why I always sweat when someone acts like colors is basically unleashed without the night stages) but colours is more so it's own thing (so it's neither better, nor worse) in fact even in mania, stardust speedway and metallic madness were pretty much completely revamped, that just goes to show how different CD is compared to other sonic games and I love it for that. It's not my favourite game in the series, but it's definitely my most replayed one. (And it also helps that it actually got me to give a second chant to both 3&K and Mania, since I didn't enjoy those games too much the first time around)

    Again, a lot I agree with. I’m not running through all my music opinions, as my opinion for which soundtrack teeter-totters between either. I agree with the people who state that the US is better for exploration, while JP is for, well more energetic Sonic music. I still quite like both of them, and I think they nail there purposes perfectly. Also, a part I’m not necessarily proud of, there would be times when I end up being like, “Oh! This track was used in Chronicles!”
    When I played this game before, I never particularly liked this game. As my current playthrough of the games, something clicked. I learned to ‘vibe’ with the levels. God I hate myself saying that, but I think I just learned to explore the levels more. It cause me to play the game a second time after... and then again. I had to move on to the next game eventually, but it really left a positive impact on me.
    I have the same love for the special stages, in which either this or Knuckles’s Chaotix are my favorite. And the decision to have two ways for the good ending is something I could gush about for a while.
    Time for disagreements. I believe that the Super Peel Out/Strike Dash is not the most useful. You stated that you prefer to use it for time travel, but I prefer using the spindash as it’s not about how fast you go, but rather how long you can keep a high speed. Since the spindash gives you the speed, and allows you to travel the same distance in less time, it’s pretty good for traveling. Next up is the Metal Sonic fight. I agree that the atmosphere and circumstance is great. I don’t like the gameplay though. It feels much more memorization based. There’s not much to it besides Spindash/Super Peel Out until you reach spike, jump over spike, repeat. Also, I never really had the problem with the Pinball boss, however, I’m not saying the boss is good. It’s quite bad still.
    Almost everything else I would have mentioned was mentioned. I’d like to just say a tad bit of just something I like; Sonic not caring about Amy’s love interest is one of the qualities I think perfectly hit Sonic’s character. He’s a free soul, not doing his adventure for reward. Oh, and I want to question. I notice when you say “Tidal Tempest,” you seem to say “Tidal Temptest.” Is this a accent thing or what. This isn’t a insult, I just found it funny how you said the zone.
    This has now become one of my favorite Megadrive games. It was hella fun now that I can enjoy it.
    I have no corrections to make this time. Most mistakes have been corrected in the comments. And interest lore in the beginning, as I didn’t know some of it. And yeah, long comment again. Sorry, I’m talking about Sonic again, I can’t help myself.

    I know this video is a year old now, bit if I had to change anything about this game... I would use both of the boss themes for the Good and Bad future respectively.
    The U.S. track is more intimidating and imposing, with only Robotnik's deep laughter... even if you beat his contraption, he's won, the future is bleak and there's nothing you can do to save it.
    But the Japanese track is a bit more cheerful and funky. There's Robotnik's deep laughter, but also a higher pitched laugh, maybe to represent Sonic. The future is bright and now there's nothing Robotnik can do to ruin it further, his latest contraption is all that's left to destroy and clean up from the utopian landscape you've helped maintain.

    Sonic 3 maybe the perfect 2D Sonic game (I have never played Mania) but CD will always be my favorite of the 4. The only thing I have against the game is the easy as hell boss fights but they are really creative despite that, even better than the one in 2 and 3 imo. The pathetic Bumper Eggman is insult to the Famicom/NES limited hardware since they share the same name for example.
    Maybe you already know this but the 6 Zones in CD is somewhat a reimagining of the 6 Zones in 1:
    Palmtree Panic - Green Hill (duh)
    Tidal Tempest - Labyrinth
    Wacky Workbench - Spring Yard
    Stardust Speedway - Star Light
    Metallic Madness - Scrap Brain
    With the exception being Collision Chaos and Marble Zone, apparently it was going to be a Marble 2.0 but then they scraped it for some reason (you can see it in the ending cutscenes) and borrowed idea heavily from both Spring Yard and Casino Night.
    Also, this is a great review. Keep up the good work, buddy.

    Sonic CD was actually the first Classic Sonic Game I played and beaten. The game has a very unique sense of style and atmosphere that has never been replicated. A very easy game too. The Metal Sonic race and Metallic Madness Act 3 are the only difficult parts of the game.
    The exploration is what makes or breaks this game. Experimenting with the time travel is the most fun for me as I like how it changes the levels and the overall atmosphere. Makes it feel like you have an impact on little planet. If you try to play it like the other games though it can come across as too easy and not as interesting as the other Classic Sonic games.

    This was a good vid for the most part, and it's nice to see some praise and credit towards Sonic CD in the modern day where everybody has an obsession with acting like it's the spawn of Satan, but you can never convince me that Wacky Workbench and Stardust Speedway are well designed zones (and no, I'm not going to call them rounds).
    I'm someone who's actually perfectly fine with Sonic CDs level design philosophy, but in a game that's all about wanting you to take your time, explore at your own pace and control, and know what you're doing, those two zones completely contradict that mentality with making it so that nearly every moment feels entirely random and you have no freakin clue as to what in the world is going to happen to you next or where you're going to be sent to. Those zones' object placements and geometry actively try to go against you and bounce/fling you to where you don't want to go. They're unbelievably irritating to traverse through.
    Your footage of the two zones honestly said it all. They don't look fun to play through. They just make you want to throw your controller with their layouts and pointless set pieces. JUST LOOK AT 27:44 FOR PETE'S SAKE! They just slapped a spike block in the middle of a burst of speed! Terrible layouts, absolutely terrible.

    Holy crap are these zones huge. Having secrets that contribute to the game's ending was a treat to find, especially since I love metroidvanias. So obviously, I made it my mission to find the transporter and hologram in every act. (Except for in Metal Madness where it took me 30 minutes of tearing my hair out looking for the hologram until I finally gave in to look it up and find out that there weren't any holograms after the Metal Sonic fight. 30 minutes I'll never get back.)
    However, that ended up making parts of the game more of a chore than a fun pass time. Screw Quartz Quadrant, Wacky Workbench and Metal Madness in particular :'(

      @@Eldarin I uh, tried getting the time stones as well but getting at the UFO's are tough :'') But I'll certainly give it a go anyway. I used the JP soundtrack for my playthrough, mostly since the JP version of the special stage track (Which acted as the menu screen theme) wowed me when I booted the game up on iOS. I partially chose it over the US soundtrack because I heard plenty about the hellish US game over/boss themes, and, being a wuss, I chickened out. I understand the rest of the US OST is worth a listen though.
      As for those holograms, good luck. I gave up and searched up a location after 30-60 min of roaming around in Wacky Workbench Act 2. Maybe you'll happen to come up upon the right places, because I checked everywhere but the ONE PLACE THE PROJECTOR WAS IN THAT ACT.
      Overall besides my terrible luck in some zones, CD was pretty great, though I don't think I enjoyed it quite as much as Sonic 2 or S3K.
      So, having finished the Genesis games, I picked up Mania for 5 or 6 bucks from the recent lunar sale on Steam a bit ago! As for how I feel about the game thus far...

    Actually, when it comes to the past and future signs, you need to run for some time. When you see the icon for it start to flash, that means you're about to warp. But if you lose your momentum at all, that means you lose the time warp and need to find a new sign. So taking it slow when you do have a past sign to find a good stretch of land, or with a future one to find a past one is how you make sure you don't warp when you don't want to.

    I'm not clowning on you for liking this game [which sucks], I'm just confused about a few things. CD would be a lot more enjoyable if Sonic 1's framework had been modified for it's main gameplay mechanic of exploring, but since the screen is still so zoomed in, it's impossible to see anything coming, ESPECIALLY on a 4:3 CRT, which is how most people played it through the original release or Gems collection, before Whitehead came along to try to salvage this mess. And then by the time you're able to find a spot to time travel, successfully pull it off, and manage to find the one Robot Teleporter located god-knows-where, you're likely to get a time over. This wouldn't be an issue if the special stages were any good. You can't even slow down in them, so if you miss one of those stupid UFOs with their hitbox way smaller than their sprite, you have to find a way to painstakingly turn your ass around without hitting the water or taking too much time.

    As a fan of both Halo and Sonic, I really have to say that the portrayal of the situation at the timestamp 9:19 isn't entirely fair. To call Bungie's code "jank" for Halo CE given how ahead of the game they were (literally), the small size of their studio, the shockingly tiny amount of time Bungie were given to do it, how 343i/Microsoft forbade those working on the remaster from talking to or working with those who worked on the original game, 343i/Microsofts absolute mishandling of every other Halo project they've been involved with... Given these and many other factors, it's quite rude to the talented and forward-thinking workers behind Halo CE, who frankly revolutionised the modern shooter, to call their work "jank."

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Caramell! I too am a very large fan of Halo myself and did not mean to come off as rude or discrediting the work of the developers behind CE when describing the coding of it. I am also very aware of the behind-the-scenes work that went into CE and how little time Bungie had when originally working on it. That was not meant to come off as a dig at Bungie, as I'm sure you too are aware..the original trilogy was coded very strangely (maybe jank wasn't the right word?) similarly to how Naka's original Genesis sonic trilogy programming was where unless you worked on it and knew how to read its "language" per say...it was hard to translate from an outsider looking in..which is also why Naka always had the upperhand in negotiations with SEGA back in the day since he knew his programming inside and out. I was simply using the MCC as a comparison due to 343 having quite alot of trouble with reworking the games for modern hardware, much like how it was challenging for CD's dev team to work with Naka's programming w/o him being there. I have a very high respect for the Bungie developers as Halo is one of my favorite franchises of all time and Halo 3 being up there as my favorite game, well..ever. I wasn't aware of the fact that MS didnt allow 343i to interact with the old Bungie devs, which is another facepalm upon many that MS has made with the series. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video and heres hoping Halo Infinite is good!

      Yeah I was playing mania relatively recently and was so happy you could unlock all those...a couple years ago when I played mania for the first time I didn’t even know the drop dash was a thing😂 that’s awesome about the all at once cheat though, I do plan on doing a video on mania as I have only played thru it once back in like 2019 and the other characters like Mighty and Ray seem super fun

    Out of sonic 1, 2 and 3/k, Sonic CD has the best soundtracks and it’s way better than sonic 1 and 2 (without tails) sonic CD has something different from them which is the story, gameplay, music and bosses. I really love this game and I don’t see why people call it the most overrated when it gets so much hate also I honestly really like the jump sound and the peelout move. This will be a controversial opinion but I think it deserves a 2 Tbh, looking back at it sometimes I wish there was more to it or something related.

    Honeslty, the level’s are fine imo, if some section’s are annoying.
    I think there shouldn’t be a Time-Limit so I can explore the level’s.
    Special-Stage’s are the worst imo, not good in anyway cause the control’s feel’s weird.
    Everything else is fine or decent.

    While I like a lot both ost, the fact that the game has a heavy japanese vibe makes impossible for me to listen to the US ost in game. I could say this one and Sonic R (and maybe Heroes) are the most japanese-feeling sonic games
