    Alfred and Bruce have a great conversation where Alfred gives one of my favorite quotes regarding Batman across any media in this movie;
    Bruce Wayne:
    Alfred, am I pig headed? Is it always my way or the highway?
    Alfred Pennyworth:
    Yes, actually. Death and chance stole your parents. But rather than become a victim, you have done everything in your power to control the fates. For what is Batman if not an effort to master the chaos that sweeps our world? An attempt to control death, itself?
    Bruce Wayne:
    But I can't, can I?
    Alfred Pennyworth:
    None of us can

    I've always thought of the Batman films as representing the eras of Batman's comics.
    Batman 1989 and Batman Returns 1992 - the 1930's and 40's. The comics then were dark and had some horror elements.
    Batman Forever - the 1950's - Not quite campy but some sci elements.
    Batman & Robin - the 1960's Campy, ridiculous pop art film.
    Batman Begins - the 1970's. A return to Batman's roots.
    The Dark Knight - the 1980's. Joker hits his stride as a murderous psychopath.
    Dark Knight Rises - The 1990's. The Batman as urban myth and uneven writing in his many comicbooks.

      Yeah 👍 Personally, I always thought Clooney was a decent Bruce Wayne at least by By Batman and Robin Standards in a few scenes with Michael Gough's Alfred. Especially the sick bed scenes. Maybe it's just me but in a lighter hearted Batman movie Bruce realising that this may be it for him and his father figure. I like those scenes, they are heartfelt for. Michael Gough does his job as well as ever too. From Batman '89 to Batman and Robin Gough's Alfred was always worth watching no matter the decline in the movies.

    I honestly feel that Clooney gets undeserved hate for Batman and Robin. The man had no control over the campy tone nor the script, and if you'd stick Keaton or Kilmer in this movie, they would get the same reception as well.
    Batman Triumphant sounded like it was going to be a massive improvement, since Joel Schumacher actually wanted to steer away from the over the top tone of B&R.
    Hell, I don't even blame Schumacher for the way Forever and B&R turned out. The man directed some amazing movies before and after his Batman movies; Warner Brothers were the ones that wanted a lighter tone due to Returns being so dark.

      I disagree, Clooney's acting was simply terrible. Arnold had a crap role and bad script, yet he made the most of it, and added some memorable parts to the film. Chris O'Donnell played the part of Robin fine as he did in the previous film. Clooney however was, "hi Freeze... Im Batman..." Keaton or Kilmer would have brought at least a little passion to the role, where Clooney was a worse performance than most Batman fan films.

      It always confuses me when actors get flak for some movies being bad. Like, people hated Andrew Garfield for the Amazing Spider-Man movies at the time, but he had no control over the issues those movies had.

    • @liveac3694
      @liveac3694 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah Schumacher is not really to blame. The studio asked him to make a child friendly, lighter tone Batman and Schumacher naturally turned to the classic Adam West series for inspiration. It also didn't help that Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Silverstone, George Clooney, Nicole Kidman and Uma Thurman delivered their worst performances ever...

  • @wstine79

      100% Agree. On Alfred's sick bed Clooney has his best moments as Bruce and Michael Gough was terrific as always. Those scenes from the quick flashback's to younger Bruce and Alfred and the Surrogate Father and Son lines as it looks like they don't have much time left together are very good Bruce and Alfred moments and there's no shortage of iconic moments between the 2. Best parts of the movie for me.

    "But fans at the time weren't fond of such an outting"
    This is false - fans loved Batman Returns in 1992, as it were the highest grossing movie of the summer that year - the mothers didn't like it and therefore didn't buy the toys - so Warner Brothers and Mc'Donalds lost a lot of money on unsold toys - that's why the new movie was more kid-friendly so that the parents would be more tolerant.

    Vee, I think the change in Robin's characterization might have to do with the fact that in "Batman Forever" Dick is on a revenge quest, trying to avenge his parents by killing, but then aprehending Two-Face. As such, he would be in a more serious frame of mind, as opposed to here, where more time has past since that tragedy and has in the interim bounced back a bit. Thereby, he could seem more boyish/easy-going than in his first outing. I may be reading to far into this, but I can see this possibily being the rational. Personally, I really liked Chris in "Forever" and still find his Robin one of the most enjoyable aspects here, along with Alfred, Barbara, and Freeze (sometimes in spite of himself).

  • @Thepopcornator

    One scene I really do appreciate in this movie is at the end, when Batman has apprehended Mr. Freeze, and he has a real heart-to-heart conversation with him, appealing to the good man deep inside, resulting in Freeze giving him the cure for Alfred's disease. That's a legitimately lovely moment in this god-awful movie.

    Honestly, no hate on Joel, he too wanted to do a dark movie like what Tim Burton wanted, but studio is to blame for this, I was hoping the bring back Chris to play a more mature and gritty Robin/Nightwing for the Crisis crossover event to redeem that character, but who knows tbh, but a shame really tbh

    • @devontehuntley6274
      @devontehuntley6274 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't get why they got on Tim and Joel's case for making darker Batman movies, but then allowed Chris Nolan to make extremely dark and serious Batman movies. That made no sense. Batman Returns is really dark, but compared to Chris' movies, it looks like a kid's movie. So what did Chris do that got the studio to relax on him? Even when Joel lightened up the mood for Forever, the studio still didn't like the results and thus, B&R was lightened to the near extreme where the series was a parody of itself now. Just makes me wonder how well Joel could have truly done his movies if allowed to make them dark.

    • @ivanagustinortiz5237

      @@devontehuntley6274 I think it has to do something with Darren Aronofsky loosing up WB with his Batman Year One script, also they were as desperate to profit and return the character to his glory days like with Superman, so clearly if B&R doesn't work they would go on the complete opposite direction

    • @Shiirow
      @Shiirow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @devontehuntley6274 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ivanagustinortiz5237 That makes sense. Just a shame they couldn't take this sort of chance to begin with and thus spared the series from even getting to the direction it got with B&R. That had potential to be a really good movie. Just goes to show the studio need to back off and let the producers do their thing and just worry about putting the damn movie out. The studio tends to damage movies more than what it's worth and even now that's still the case.

    • @devontehuntley6274
      @devontehuntley6274 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Shiirow That whole crisis thing was just pathetic. Now these franchises can't continue because some TV thing wanted to play multi-verse and destroy things when they could have simply had their own universe and be done with it. No need to reference anything else. Gotham on FOX didn't do this referencing other Batman lore, so those CW shows could have done the same thing. That whole crisis thing was just mass complication and confusion and the results left some pretty good universes and shows buried in the ground. What a cheap way for them to go out.

    First off, Robin WAS a real Dick. Grayson. But also thank you for being one of the few people I've seen who understand how mischaracterized Mr Freeze was. Everything he did was means to an end to get his wife back, he wasnt evil for evils sake he just did what he believed necessary. Hell, I 100% believe that if Bruce Wayne successfully funded Nora's recovery and told Freeze who he was that Freeze would likely be an ally to the bat family.

      If I could recast Mr Freeze, he would be portrayed by Patrick Stewart and his storyline would be that he’s regular Victor Fries, a scientist who seeks to find a cure for his wife’s illness but his boss, Ferris Boyle, a greedy douchebag, screws Fries out of the funds needed for his research (Boyle would be played by either Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons or Ian McKellen) and when Fries tries to confront him, Boyle causes an accident which seemingly kills Fries, only for him to be resurrected as a vengeful individual who is cursed to suffer “eternal winter”. A few years later, he resurfaces to kill Boyle and continue his research to save his wife. Batman and Robin try to stop Fries and despite countless setbacks, the Dynamic Duo beat Fries and find out the true reason for his rampage and they form a shaky alliance with Fries to beat Boyle. Fries tries to kill Boyle but Batman tells Fries that if he kills Boyle, he would end up being a fiend consumed by hate and revenge and Fries stops, surrendering to the authorities and Boyle is arrested as well. Fries manages to cure Nora thanks to assistance from Batman and the Dynamic Duo continue to do their duty to defend Gotham City

    Frankly, I've always found Clooney kind of wooden and incapable of emoting to save his life. I remember a bit from "American Dad" where Francine points out that he has a signature movie, "he looks down, looks up and delivers his line". Something like that.
    That whole killing off the villains thing was really weird. With Joker, it was in his contract but I don't know why the other movies always had two villains and, at least one of them, always died. I have no idea why.

    • @axebomber2108
      @axebomber2108 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not so weird if you consider the context of the times. The Batman movies were essentially action movies, and action movies of the 80s and 90s often ended with the villain either falling to his or her death or being shot by the protagonist.

    • @LibraGamesUnlimited
      @LibraGamesUnlimited 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@axebomber2108 I guess, I was never really into pure action movies. I only watched them when they had some twist like if they were action sci-fi or something.
      The whole burned out, borderline, shoot first and ask questions later cop taking out scores of bad guys and whatnot never really thrilled me.
      I guess it also makes sense if you're working from the idea that you're only going to make so many so you're unlikely to have any villains return. :)

    20:42 was not only 100% accurate but definitely cracked me up because of the way you said it. Sorry for this long comment, but I definitely have a strong opinion for sure. Number one, I definitely agree with you. Great video. Personally I think the Batman franchise died not just because of Schumacher's direction, no disrespect to him, but because of whiny parents, Warner Bros, and McDonald's for complaining about Batman Returns. If it wasn't for that, we wouldn't have gotten the two Schumacher movies. I wish Batman Forever and Batman and Robin never existed. However this may be a rare opinion, but if I was absolutely forced to, I would rather watch Batman and Robin than Batman Forever for one reason only. Forever is a painful reminder of the third and final film we would have gotten from Burton if he would have stayed on. The cast he was going to have come back and the other cast members that were rumored or considered were all awesome. The Batman 89 comic is a perfect sequel to Returns. A nice return to the Burtonverse. I love that Sam Hamm is back to write it. It's awesome so far and I predict it will be. The Flash of course is the official movie sequel to Batman Returns because obviously Keaton's coming back and I'm stoked. I'll definitely be cheering in the theater when he makes his entrance. Plus the reported fight between him and my other favorite Batfleck will be pretty awesome. Thank God they're retconning the Schumacher movies.

    One thing I have grow to forgive and appreciate....I not want anymore to blame the atrocities this movie did to Batman characters on Joel Schumacher, George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman or any talent behind the lens, they all did what they where PAID for, and most of the horrible decisions story wise came from executives of WB and their sponsors, we all crucified Joel for directing this as he was the one who says lets make this more and more closer to the Adam West Batman....no that was WB, wanted to sell more toys and is sad we kinda killed Joel career because of this, the man was talented and could have make a great Batman film if not was for the interference of money grabbing executives mandating how a Batman movie need it to be, all because they still couldn't forgive that they loss a deal with McDonalds and many families complained for Batman Returns a film THEY gave all the freedom to Tim Burton to made. If anyone have to take the blame for Batman & Robin is WB.
