Live action Lex? Rosenbaum is best, hands down. But the voice... animated Lex always wins out because of that. Now if we could get Rosenbaum's portrayal and general look, with Clancy Brown (the voice actor from the DCAU) doing the voice? THAT would be amazing!

I grew up with Smallville, so it will always be special to me, Clark and Lana went on for way too long and they should of had Lois and Clark together a lot sooner,
I'm surprised you didn't mention Smallville's biggest offender, which is how EVERY TIME Clark saves a companion who didn't know he had superpowers, they had to be randomly knocked unconscious by the plot, so that they would remain unaware of his abilities lol Growing up, I hated that so much
At least they didn't give him a fucking magic memory erasing kiss, like the Christopher Reeves movies... Imagine him having to kiss Lex everytime he witnessed something "Supermanish"? THAT ... would've turned the show into a comedy!
The teenage friendship between Lex and Clark calls back to silver age Superman... Smallville got it right with a few twists...you couldn't take your eyes off Rosenbaum as Lex.
To be fair, this dude very clearly never watched the show. Just based on the few minutes I managed to suffer through, he doesn't even seem to read comics.
And that was one of the brilliant points of the show, I waited with anticipation when Clark becomes Superman A) Lex still doesn’t know that’s Clark Kent and he’d rant and vent with Clark about Superman or B) Lex would know but instead of exposing Clark’s secret he chooses not to because in Lex’s world “why would I do that?” Or he’d say “And stop all the fun?” Neither happened.
I always found it kind of unsettling how smallville is supposedly a small, rural town, yet every episode, at least one person dies and no one seems to care or remember. It makes sense in Supernatural because they travel all over the country, but you would think that many deaths in one area would raise some red flags to its remaining citizens.
@@parkerboy795 in buffy the characters were aware though. smallville they're just kind of in a town that was directly impacted by a meteor and not only is there no tourism but a lot of the characters are like "nothing interesting ever happens in smallville".
@@jamescheddar4896 True. It's kind of funny how later in the series Lex talks about how weird things are in the town and while it is an indication that he was losing it and was trying to excuse his villainy, it would be weird and frustrating that people write things off like meteor freaks, alien ships, and weird symbols.
@@parkerboy795 it sounds like something out of Saturday Night Live or something: Lex is the only who reacts to all the strange shit going on while everyone don’t react at all.
to be fair... people knew, they just didn't say much about it cause they didn't like to think about it. it was kept to a whisper. And then there was Chloe... with her whole wall of weird.
The show outgrew it’s original premise honestly. Like even calling it “ Smallville” didn’t really make sense in later seasons because we spend very little time there and it was not really about the town anymore. Also having Clark face off with and defeat Lex, Brainiac, Zod, Bizarro, Doomsday, freaking Darkseid, etc all BEFORE he put on the costume or officially became Superman, and the JLA being formed as well, was a weird choice as well.
Honestly it felt like as Clark grew and became more like Superman, the dc universe grew and expanded as well. It felt like the silver age comics where Superboy met Lex, GA, Batman, Lois and other heroes and villains before he became Superman. It works in the canon it is creating and universe it built up.
@Will N it’s an elseworld. Also Smallville usually took elements from whatever was in continuity at the time to build their own Superman universe (President Lex in the early runs being put as Lex definitive future, Clark at first being more like Post Crisis Clark but after a while ended up taking a more Christopher Reeve/Post Infinite Crisis like personality, taking LOSH and JSA from Geoff John’s current run, season 9 being similar to the New Krypton arc that was out at the time, Bart being the Flash mainly bc they couldn’t use Barry and Wally but OYL made Bart the Flash, Green Arrow being a killer and having a public identity around the same time Rise and Fall of Green Arrow/Arsenal came out). Not to mention movies like Superman Returns, Iron Man, Watchmen and the original Superman movies. Superman continuity has been consistently changing details but Smallville mixed and merged to create its own universe. Smallville didn’t exist in a bubble but was influenced by so many different sources. It was like if Donner Superman had a mix of silver age, post crisis and DCAU but in a post 9/11 world. I’m not going to act like Doomsday was perfect but it fit in the context of the show same with each of the other people he encounter that forced Clark to reconsider his own worldview and forced him to become a more proactive hero. And it also introduced characters as probably potential introductions before their live action counterparts in future movies or tv shows. But it showed the importance of Clark and how influential he was to other heroes in a way no other show or movie could do as well. Clark set a shining example and proved through his actions why he is world’s greatest hero, he doesn’t necessarily have to be the first but when he did go public it changed everything for heroes.
Smallville should have ended when they graduated and they could have done a sequel show called metropolis. It could have basically been the second half of the show except people call him superman an he wears the costume. Frame it as early superman not an origin story.
I personally loved the chemistry between Tom's Clark Kent and Erica's Lois Lane. They started off as bickering friends, and gradually grew to be a couple. And I think that's why it works. They start off as friends. Clark seems to be at his most comfortable when he's with Lois. He's snarkier, more outspoken, he smiles a lot and has a good time when he's with her. I actually buy them as a couple once they get to that point. Tom and Erica are the definitive Clark and Lois for me, as both for characters AND as a couple. Overall, I absolutely love this show. From beginning to end. It may get frustrating at times, but I always have a good time rewatching this show.
I agree. I don't understand how some people think there was no chemistry between them. There was alot from the get go. Maybe it's because the show dragged out the will they/won't they with Lana too long and didn't really have her and Clark break up but rather forced apart. Either way, Clark and Lois in Smallville reminded of them in the DCAU where Lois is attracted to Clark, but in denial.
@@ChienaAvtzon I'm cutting her some slack because despite her flaws, I'm more annoyed at the stories focusing on her rather than her specifically, but she should have either stayed gone after season 3 and the show shouldn't have invented that ridiculous witch storyline to bring her back, or she and Clark should have definitively broken up earlier because they just didn't work and not because of Clark's secrecy or Lana absorbing kryptonite.
@@parkerboy795 - While, this video brings up some very legitimate criticisms of the show. It is mind boggling just how wrong he is on Clark and Lana’s relationship. It was unhealthy, for both of them, since the pilot episode. For me, “Smallville” died when Lana was not written off, after being the cause of Jonathan Kent’s death. It was so unrealistic and cruel to have Clark still pine for her.
@@ChienaAvtzon I think it was more along the lines of him praising their chemistry, but I agree, the relationship was unhealthy. I hate to say this because I like him and the show and characters do good enough job bagging on him, but Jonathan died because of Clark. Or more precisely, because of Jor El. Jor-El's extremely questionable demands and actions led to Clark making understandable, but very costly decisions. I'll admit it was a it too much to see him still be infatuated with her when she was with Lex, which really shouldn't have happened for many reasons.
The only reason why I love this show the way I do is because I grew up with it. For me it was one of the first things of Superman I watched. It wasn’t the definitive story of Superman but it was decent. Some seasons are better than others, and I agree the later seasons weren’t my favorite but I still enjoyed them because I was a kid who liked the story. Plus Michael rosenbum as Lex is great casting.
I think I might be one of the only people that enjoyed Smallville throughout it's whole run. I liked some seasons more then others but for the most part I enjoyed everything this show has done and this show to me has the best adaptations of Superman and Lex. They had a perfect cast to me for the most part except for Lois which I think there could of been a better casting for her but mainly Welling and Rosenbaum to me were so perfect for the roles of Clark and Lex. It's too bad we never got to see Clark be Superman but he was essentially Superman when he was calling himself the Blur. If I had to pick a season when the show dipped in quality a bit I would say it was around the time Lex and Lana left the show.
I watched Smallville when I was a kid so it just has a nostalgic feel and i love it so much. I cannot watch seasons 3 and 9 tho. In season 9 the cast is basically just Clark Louis and Chloe and its lame
@@colincnote2120 Yeah I feel season 9 is one of the weaker seasons but I really liked his trenchcoat costume that he had in that season. Whats wrong with season 3?
Well, Vee himself said he loved it all throughout, and I share that sentiment. But no matter how much we love it, there's no denying that the show had some real low points, even if those lows weren't enough to ruin our overall experience with it.
@@MoostachedSaiyanPrince Yeah I mean the show had problems. Me personally I did not have too many issues with the show except for Lois. I know a lot of people stopped liking the show once the show hit post high school and then there were some people didn't like anything after Lana and Lex left the show as well.
Ill never forget the episode where lana got a taste of clarks powers, and when figuring out what to do they decide to go for a quiet afternoon quickie that almost break the town and has chloe so worried she has to tell clark lmaoo
Chloe’s reaction to the “yeah, that was probably us” exchange was priceless. I can remember in the early ‘60s the whole conversation about how Supes could do some serious damage when he finally “let go” - those little swimmers breaking the sound barrier, etc.😂
Died for me when Pete left. I still enjoyed season 4 and part of season 5 but after that I found most of it repetitious and bland. Pete didn't seem like a very important character at the time but I remember how it felt when he left. And Alicia was also important. Getting rid of those 2 was a mistake. Alicia could have redeemed a lot of the show.
“Smallville” died when the writers kept Lana Lang on the show, after Season 5. There was no reason for all that relationship drama, considering Lana was the reason Clark’s father died. Then add that Lois Lane was a permanent cast member, at that point. Lois brought out the fun and snarky side of Clark. The best romances are when the couple are both lovers and best friends. The friendship between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor was the heart and soul of “Smallville”. Michael Rosenbaum is, and will always be, the greatest Lex Luthor. No one can even come close.
Yea Clark and lex’s friendship was definitely the crux of the show and a lot of what made it so great atleast early on before the actor who plays lex left. I grew up with the show and I remember wanting lex to just never fully turn evil even though I knew it was inevitable for him to become Clark’s greatest enemy
The reason I liked Smallville was it was not unlike the Man of Steel or Birthright comics. It took the story we knew and added new elements and spun it differently. I loved the whole debate about choice versus destiny, and in the end it really is both, with both Clark and Lex. They are destined to be those men, but they make choices that definitively send them down their respective paths. It's positively heisenbergian and I enjoyed that. I also like that they put some serious thought into the Superman mythos and added some things and altered others to make it work better. I liked the idea that Jor-El didn't just randomly send his son to Earth. Rather, when he was young and visited Earth as a rite of passage (something that had happened with his people before) he got in trouble in Smallville and Hiram Kent helped him get out of it. When he left Hiram told him to stop by if he ever made his way back there and Jor-El told him he would remember that. So Kal-El was sent to Earth and specifically to Kansas because Jor-El had friends there who he trusted. That's just more intellectually satisfying because it makes more sense. I like the fact that the House of El symbol is based on a series of symbols in written Kryptonian and even before we see the classic shield we see similar motifs. Smallville's biggest problem, in my mind, was it was held back by the fact that it was a WB/CW show and was specifically made as a night time teen drama. That was their biggest problem because it took away from the rise of Superman story and turned it into a teen soap opera along the lines of Dawson's Creek or Everwood. That's why even though the show suffered massively from the departure of Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and Lana (Kristen Kreuk) it did get a better in a lot of ways because they stopped having so much of the angsty teen drama crap and instead focused on Superman stuff. My favorite moments were always when he was hanging out with the other superheroes, because their interactions always felt very real and well executed.
I think you did a really good job with this essay, even though I don't completely agree on every point. Personally, I preferred the relationship that eventually developed between Lois and Clark because to me it felt a bit more earned. Clark was pretty much hopelessly in love with Lana right from the very first episode, whereas with Lois, they kinda start out disliking each other (or at least somewhat annoyed by one another). Over time they became friends while they still dated other people. It was only after really spending a lot of time involved in each other's lives and getting to know each other that they finally started dating and then became a romantic couple. That progression just held a lot more appeal for me. The pairing of Chloe and Oliver in comparison felt like a billion times more forced, especially since she had previously demonstrated such wonderful chemistry with Jimmy Olsen. I always felt that the killing off of his character at the end of the eighth season was the worst move by the writers in the entire series. Aaron Ashmore brought this fresh, goofy charm to practically every scene he was in. Heck, there were even a couple of episodes where he was practically the main character. I was really hoping to see him continue his friendship with Clark, becoming part of the small group who knew about his secret identity.
Speaking of romance, the Chloe x Clark subplot that was dropped because he had go rescue Lana wasn’t mentioned here. And I was hoping that Chloe would be Clark’s lady instead of Lois, in this continuity.
The one thing I remember truly disliking , is all the really convoluted ways they kept trying too inject Lana back into the story over and over. My favorite was Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luther God he was killin it imo
The nostalgia factor is what makes Smallville stand the test of time, it’s the first Superhero show a lot of nerds today saw and loved. I remember starting with season 2 and rewatching it multiple times because it was the only season I had, then I became obsessed and 10 years later I’ve rewatched every season multiple times Averagesizedville
I feel like enjoyed Smallville throughout Its run. At the end of the day, Smallville is about Clark. It was a strong show that I felt the only thing was it was affected by lower budget . Season 9 was one of it strongest and show why Clark chose to become Superman. It’s one of the best origins of Superman, and adaptions of the character. It shows a transition from a kid introverted and unsure of his place in the world, use to helping in the shadows in his casual clothings to becoming a public hero and proactive as well as a leader and beacon for all. As he grew, I felt I grew with him and it made me appreciate Superman as a character and his entire mythos due to this show
@@TodaywithJulius not really but ok. It had a lot of solid moments and featured a more proactive and self assured Clark. It had more consistency with each episodes and a stronger front end
Kowxley I actually didn't like the ninth season of smallville in my opinion. I really hate Alia in my opinion and I really didn't like what the ninth season of smallville did to Zod in my opinion
I personally think Erica Durance's Lois Lane saved the show... By the end of Season 3 it was getting a little repetitive and honestly it seems like the show was running out of ideas because what more could they possibly explore if Clark was already mastering his powers, knowing about his past and pursuing Lana? Lois brought out a completely new side of Clark, not only by showing a more fun and witty part of his personality but by allowing Smallville to go on for as long as it did through exploring his life as a journalist on the Daily Planet and living in Metropolis. There were definitely ups and downs and quite a few plotholes in the show, and I do acknowledge that by the end of the 10th season the show was very different than it was in season 1. But I honestly think that by making Clark step out of his comfort zone, the show was able to be a true Superman origin story from start to finish and Lois was a great part of why it's one of my favorite shows of all time (plus I think that her and Clark's relationship was ultimately much healthier for the show than his with Lana which was a more immature "first love" type of thing, whereas Lois is who actually allowed Clark to grow up and become a superhero)
@@rolandofgilead43 He never wore it. It was all cgi in wide shots. Part of the reason was because it was Brandon’s Superman Returns suit which probably didn’t fit him
I think it's really interesting you say he did way too much before he was Superman, because I thought that was one of the great things the CW did with him when he came back for crisis. He seems like the only Superman that would say fuck it, give up his powers, and start a family. He's been saving the world since he was in high-school. Smallville holds a special place in my heart. I still remember asking to stay up late to watch it on Tuesday nights at 9 on the wb. Got me through some very tough middle school years and taught me about perseverance. I'm glad superman and Lois is also amazing maybe the superman ip just needs to stay on the small screen
I remember those days too. Of course, when Supernatural came along and I wanted to stay up an extra hour later to watch both, that took a little more convincing.
Another continuity slip was characters or locations that didn’t appear when you’d expect them to. Chloe’s father appeared rarely and there had to be a line to explain why he wasn’t at her wedding (the one Doomsday crashed). Lana’s bio father was another vanishing parent figure, ditto for Lana’s aunt Nell. Pete left end of season three iirc and didn’t get a a single mention until his guest appearance in season seven. Lucas Luthor only existed at all for a single episode, never to be seen or heard of again. For locations, the Talon coffee shop set was retired long before the Talon apartment got blown up (and it’s not the best entrance for the apartment, up a staircase right in the middle of a public place). We don’t even know who ran it after Martha.
I’m trying to remember I’m pretty sure Lana’s bio dad just disappeared, the last thing I remember him doing was helping Johnathan get cleared after he was framed for murder. Pete showed up for an episode in season 7 and then just disappeared off the face of the planet again.
I’m not surprised that Lionel slept with Lex’s nanny and his wife’s nurse, which produced two bastard children. As for Julian, that backstory lead to one of the best episodes of the series: Memoria.
I’ve been watching the show recently and my god do they torture poor Lana throughout it. Someone needs to count how many times she was at the hospital in the show. you’d think the doctor would be suspicious at some point
She was suffering alone after Clark broke up with her in Season 5, that she started using that green liquid stuff to see her dead parents and I hated Clark for it. None of them were ever there for her, that's when she turned to Lex
Not to defend her too much, but I think Mack was a part of the cult, not a cult leader. She was sort of a victim herself. She was, at least according to my wife, losing money in season 8-10 because the cult was bleeding her dry. I hope she find Jesus and seeks forgivnes. We all can lose our way.
@@demoballer9173 We watched Smallville together and she did research out of curiosity. I am not into "true crime" so she gave me the cliff notes. In season 9-10 she suffered finaniacl difficulty and had anorexia.
Smallville, very much like Gotham is an alternate take where the villains essentially appear before the hero becomes the iconic figure he’s meant to be. I love these unique takes because it didn’t play it “safe” and anything can happen. Much like movies, the shows aren’t straight up adaptations and allow room for new creative decisions to keep it fresh and exciting. I think Smallville captured the heart of Superman better than a lot of mediums did and we didn’t even need to see him in the cape. Tom Welling was excellent as Clark Kent and the writing supported him because it understood Clark Kent. Also Michael rosenbaum as Lex Luthor is without a doubt the stand out of the show. They gave him almost a Michael Corleone-esque Shakespearean tragedy to his character arc. An anti-hero with a number of redeeming qualities until he becomes THE villain.
Erica Durance elevated the show imo. She had great chemistry with Welling and the cultivation of their relationship was a more realistic take compared to traditional Hollywood/TV relationships. Clark and Lana were toxic. Their interest in each other came from a place of deep insecurity and mistrust. I don't think Clark ever loved Lana but was more infatuated with her. The same goes for Lana towards Clark. Clark was the super good-looking nice guy who at first simped over her. Lois, however, was a more emotionally stronger and entertaining character. She had a report with Clark that could sustain a lifetime, unlike the fickle fleeting infatuation sentiment so tiredly conveyed with Lana. This is made clear when Clark, in less time was able to let Lois know his romantic intentions towards her and his serious pursuit of her affection. Lois' incling and eventual learning the truth about Clark was also less selfish and more supportive, whereas with Lana it was the opposite. Still, a great show that had some amazing writing (not always) and some of the best life lessons you could learn from the likes of Jonathan Kent and surprisingly even moreso from Lionel and Lex.
The Lana and Clark relationship reminded me of most high school relationships. Can't tell you how many high school relationships seemed just as dramatic as theirs.
I preferred Clark and Lois because they started off as friends and eventually worked towards being romantically involved. I never like it when a romantic interest is introduced as a romantic interest
Lois Lane was never portrayed as a bland character unless someone's only frame of reference is Amy Adams and Kate Bosworth. Other than them she is portrayed as a handful personality wise and sassy do what it takes reporter. Durance, Margo Kidder and Teri Hatcher did the character proper..
@@Ryan_Wayne Yes, Kate Bosworth level of blah is unmatched. Amy Adams had the strength of Lois, but hardly the gutsy punchy personality. No pizzazz, no moment where it's like "No wonder the strongest man in the world loves her." I've seen her show that in other movies ironically so that could be a more of a Zach Snyder DC universe thing where everything is dark and bruting.
@@rashb3994 And with Margot Kidder's Lois, who did not recognize Superman unless he took down his glasses, you didnt wonder why strongest man in the world or anyone in the world for that matter, would love her? :D I mean, she wasnt really smart, was she? And imho she wasnt even pretty. I think Amy Adams had some "gutsy punchy" lines in Man of Steel (remember for example that one about measuring dicks?) and she found out about Clark identity with her investigation without seeing him more than once. Meanwhile Margot... well we both now, how that was portrayed. I think cheesy could be the right word for it. So I think Amy's Lois was much more impressively written character - and I also think Amy is a better actress in general. PS: No comment for Kate Bosworth, I dont hate her portrayal, but I dont love it either.
@@Ryan_Wayne Lois and the rest of the world not getting past the glasses thing is part of Superman lore. It was pulled off better with Kidder because she saw Clark as a charity case, so him being Superman was unbelievable to her. That's what makes it great.. I actually love Snyder verse but he's not great with those little small details. There's a reason why the Richard Donner first Superman is still considered the best one. You see why Superman falls in love with Kidder's version of Lois because they're polar opposites. He's a quiet humble smalltown guy, and she's rah rah, bold, fearless and sassy. Again I agree on Amy Adams presenting more of a silent strength and fearlessness but then she goes into emo mode when he's gone. Totally goes against the character. Also because they're both blah in Snyder verse their romance is hardly believeable. It's like friendzonish. Lol @ she's not even pretty. Man, don't let the feminist here you say that 😂. But yeah sure most of the Lois's are cuter. You get one point for that and yes Amy is a way better actress probably then all of them. I guess I don't have a problem with AA, I just wished they unleashed her full blown sass capabilities.
@@rashb3994 I guess I get your point of view with that polar opposites theory. The thing is that I just didnt really buy it in those movies, same way as I didnt buy it with Clark and Lois in Smallville, where they were portrayed similarily as opposites and it still felt "friendzonish" to me. What you are saying might make sense on paper to me, but watching those movies, Cavill & Adams always felt to me more believeable as a couple than Reeve & Kidder. And I could say the same thing about Clana vs Clois in Smallville btw. Well Donner's Superman might be considered as the best, however that's another thing I dont agree with. And I'm not arguing which one is considered best, I'm just saying the Snyder movies and Cavill/Adams portrayals of those characters are the best ones for me. What you are saying about Lois seeing him as charity case, well its true obviously, but to me its another thing I kind of have a problem with. Clark is a loser in her eyes and once she discovers he is superhero, she is big time in love with him, how romantic.. I mean I know its a clasic story where she was kind of in love with Superman from the beginning, its not like I would hate that movie(s) for that, but I definitely prefer the story where Lois develops some kind of relationship with Clark on human level before he is Superman and the suit in the end doesnt matter. And it was portrayed that way in Man of Steel, even though the romance maybe could use a little more build up.
I love seeing how much love this show got. For me it was a bit more personal. The year it started, my dad went to prison, and Smallville played a huge part in my upbringing, I saw Clark as a huge role model in my life, and try my best every day to live up to him. I loved this show through the whole run, for me as Clark grew up along side me, it just got better and better. ❤️
I would say when Lex left the show, that was when Smallville definitely dipped in, at least, my enthusiasm for the show. And Tess definitely didn't replace in him anyway. But when Zod, and then Doomsday came, I got into it again.
I didn't like the ending of the season. Him losing because his supporters had super hearing, and he lost control, even though he had always maintained his composure. Just felt super lazy.
I feel the show shouldn't have lasted longer than five seasons. Clark could have gotten with Lana in Season 3 and then they break up in Season 4. Then he leaves Smallville at the end of Season 4 to train with Jor-El. Season 5 could have been a short season where we see him honing his powers and saving people around the world, ending in him becoming Superman in the series Finale.
When I watched it for the first time, I thought we would get a few seasons of Smallville and then there would be a new show called Metropolis after it ended with the same characters and cast. It was kind of weird that it didn't happen.
Clark and Lana were crushes, but Clark and Lois were best friends and that’s why they work better for eachother for long term growth. Watch Clark with Lois: it’s the only time he laughs with a girl, then he develops a sense of humour later on (fake sneezing on Chloe’s desk, sass back to Lois). Clark developed a backbone after living with Lois in highschool! He started having that back and forth sass with Lois which is entirely the most honest firm of youth flirting!! Lana and Clark added nothing to eachother, in fact Lana and Clark spent their time walking on eggshells around eachother and having a LOT of drama.. they felt overgrown like when you try to get back with an ex and worry about everything. Clark helps Lois open up and gives her someone to talk to, Lois challenges Clark’s passivity and naivety in his actions he thinks are correct like keeping his secret from someone he’s trying to date. The way they look at eachother is like they are equals like yin and Yang. That’s my only dispute here…. 🙃
One of the major issues comes down to Tom Welling not wanting to be in the "Superman" costume. So the show constantly had to write around the established lore of him being Superboy. It inhibited the progression of the story & caused it to flounder.
You are entirely wrong. The shows creators pitched the Show with the following: “No Flights, No tights.” The only exception to the tights was in the season finale. Tom was never comfortable in the suit and considering it was the Superman Returns costume and designed for another actor they chose to do it with CGI.
I feel that the show should have either split itself into two parts or different shows. Have Clark and Lana end up together at the end of Smallville then do a Time skip for the second Show called Metropolis that has a heartbroken Clark Kent leave Smallville due to something happening with Lana and introduce Lois. This could have at least fixed what I feel many issues of the show eventually became. The Chemistry between Welling and Kreuk was just too good as well as the love story they were telling between Lana and Clark to believable I feel at times. I stopped watching the show the minute Lex and Lana left. This was the heart and soul of the show. I was never sold on the Lois being his love interest in the show and that she was only a second choice. Also, Lois is what you would call an intrusive character overall in the plot all of sudden. Since she was introduced so early, they had to force her into some really stupid plot points just so she could remain close to Clark. She can't get into college force her to go to high school for a little while. She fails at college, force her to work at the Talon, then all of sudden someone with no experience I know lets make her a campaign manager. Also once Lois introduced this removed whatever investment people may have had with Lana and you can see the fanbase usually split with Lana vs Lois as well.
Right? Lois never fit the show as anything but comedic relief or as a nuisance. Lana was integral to the show and to Clark's development. Not only was she the love of Clark's life, but she was also a deeply emotionally motivated character with a long, traumatic history. In a thematic sense, she fit the Hero Vs. Villain narrative as the innocent caught between them. The show clearly paints our future "Superman" as a Savior and Lex is becoming the devil and gives Lana a choice between light and dark. That makes Lana our "Eve" which sets her up for a really cool redemption story.
I never cared for Lois. I know that Clark ends up with Lois, that's Superman, but in Smallville Lana was the one. Their chemistry was amazing. Lois was extremely annoying, for me. I don't have nothing against Erica, i think that she is a good actress, but there was no chemistry between her and Tom. That was writers fault.
My favorite thing about Smallville was "as much as it is Clark's journey to becoming Superman ... it was Lex Luthor's journey to becoming the Villian."
I thought the same thing about Clark and Lois on my first watch but I recently rewatched the show and I feel different about it. You can see it in the writing that they had a friendship that become romantic over time. Although I have to agree that Clark had better chemistry with Lana in the show.
I loved Erica Durance - for me, she was the definitive Lois Lane, but I just didn’t feel any chemistry between her and Welling, especially when comparing the chemistry between Welling and Kreuk (at least in the earlier seasons) I just never bought Lois and Clark being anything more than friends
@@jbcatz5 I found it funny that Clark didn't reveal his secret to Lois because he didn't want to put her in harms way, but she ended getting in harms way anyway. Like every episode, so it literally wouldn't have changed anything aside from 1 episode.
David Martinez That’s the staple of the Lois Lane character, getting herself in trouble in pursuit of a story. At least for STAS and Smallville she wasn’t a meek hostage, she had a tongue on her and knew how to get information even when captive.
I feel like this is always a problem with prequel shows - after a few seasons, you run out of material. The show either has to end, or it has to stop being a prequel.
I love Smallville in its entirety, but they definitely did make some questionable choices. I think that it should have definitely transitioned to being called Metropolis for the last few seasons and they should have actually had Clark don the suit and become Superman at that point.
@@willfanofmanyii3751 I really don’t understand his dislike of even attempting to wear the suit. Everyone watching the show desperately wanted to see him wear that thing. I do hope he didn’t have personal body image issues, but throughout the show we do see him bare chested even almost naked at times and he definitely had the physique for that suit.
@@El3ctr0Lun4 Exactly, I never really understood why he never really wore the suit. But according to one comment I saw a while ago, Tom didn't want to be known as just or always be associated with "Superman" (something like that), like how Tobey Maguire automatically brings "Spiderman" to mind and Robert Downey Jr is commonly known as "Iron man". Personally, the above reason still doesn't make sense. Firstly, it's not really a big deal, like he's in a Superman origin show for crying out loud. Secondly, isn't Christopher Reeves already known as THE "Superman"?? Yeah, Smallville is a mixed experience in general.
Smallville was one of those shows I grew with and watched on TV with my folks. I also was and still am a big Superman fan. It was cool seeing them bring in the comic villains bizarro, doomsday, zod, branniac, even though I felt like the inclusion of Doomsday was a bit confusing as to why. Of course Lex, I was always in the camp of a Lana and Clark relationship, vs Clark and Lois (at least the Smallville show anyway).
While I agree Smallville stopped being Smallville about midway thru season 6 once Chloe got powers and Lex and Lana got married, seasons 8 thru 10 should have been called Metropolis. And the digital comic Smallville season 11 was actually pretty good. We get to see more of the Mythology and get introduced to Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern.
Actually, Gotham has the same issue, having Bruce Wayne going up against most of his rogue's gallery before he even becomes Batman. The main problem with Smallville was its structure and inability to know what characters and stories were relevant, and which ones had outlived their usefulness, and which ones just didn't fit. This was never more true than with the character of Lana Lang, who was only relevant in the show's first four seasons during Clark's high school years, but was simply no longer relevant or necessary by season 5 as she didn't fit into Clark's post-high school and pre-Superman storyline the way that Chloe Sullivan and Lois Lane did. The show also went way overboard with the "meteor freak" storylines, similar to how The Flash overused the metahumans created by the STAR Labs particle accelerator explosion. But Smallville was also hampered by studio interference, as Smallville was intended to be a sister show to a series about teenage Bruce Wayne, similar to Gotham, with the two shows crossing over with each other. But Warner Bros. kept restricting Smallville from using certain characters to avoid their film division having to compete with a television show, which is why Bruce Wayne wasn't allowed on Smallville, and didn't get his own show until Gotham premiered on the Fox Network three years after Smallville ended, and why Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and other characters weren't allowed on Smallville.
I understood it, she was seen as the town's sympathetic character because of the meteor tragedy and attempted a lot of self growth, while being somewhat empahetic to others (at times naively) plus she was gorgeous. What I dont think people noticed was how much the character herself was uncomfortable with it and was part of her journery and development (That was shrouded in everyone else storylines that also stopped and started). Theres a good video on her character I saw a while back that kinda analyzed it.
Her list of achievements are implausible, and that’s before the show went from the WB to the CW. Running a coffee shop, keeping up with her school work, her equestrian endeavours, developing an art portfolio in complete secret because the plot needed her to be at a Paris art school to have her possessed by an ancient witch to compete for kryptonian macguffins on top of the relationship ups and downs and getting kidnapped or targeted by a meta human every other week. It took Lana literally imbuing herself with kryptonite to have her written off the show for good, only returning in the season 11 comics.
My biggest problem wasnt so much that the Kents were handpicked by Jor El to raise Clark. My problem was that there was a easy portal between Krypton and Earth that was active even after the knowledge of Krypton's destruction was known. In one episode it is revealed that Lara popped through with Kara one Sunday morning to check out the house where her son would be raised. Why did they even bother with the dangerous and lengthy spaceship journey when the entire El family could have popped through, survived, and raised Clark themselves?
I loved the show no matter what and it’s still my favorite show of all time. There were crummy episodes of the show, cough cough witches cough cough vampires, but overall, I love it. Great video @Vee Infuso and I can’t wait for the coming eps where you praise the show. I know the show had its problems, but it still was awesome too. I’d never be mad for you making these videos. You do a good job and you don’t dump on the show which I greatly appreciate. Thanks again man and keep the fantastic videos and content coming please! I do consider Erica Durance my favorite Lois Lane of all time. I feel they got her correct.
It's obvious Clark was going to be with Lois, but they could've least made Lana a good friend instead throwing random lies at her while trying to stretch out the series.
This show had to categorize the women and I guess Chloe occupied that spot as the good friend. In retrospect, they could have but Lana was such a signifcant part of his early life and what the show was it would have been weird, though it would have been nice to see her explore normal relationships maybe with another hero while still being Clark's friend.
I love Smallville. I agree that the writers wrote themselves into corners a lot. The biggest complaint I had was the Clark/Lana/Lois issues. It seemed to me that they did too good of a job showing us how much Lana was the girl for Clark that they didn't know how to, or just couldn't cleanly move the audience away from that. I am someone who didn't grow up reading the comics or watching the movies so it would have been fine with me if Clark and Lana needed up together, but I know that would not have gone over well with those who really cared about the mythology.
Ok so I actually don't agree on some things you said, like when you mentioned how Jonathan often comes back after his death, he literally shows up in 3 episodes, the first and last 2 of season 10. And no, I'm not counting when Brainiac pretended to be Jonathan, because that wasn't Jonathan. Anyway, let's talk about Lois and Lana as Clark's partners. I don't deny that Clark and Lana had chemistry, I mean, I even liked them together. Actually, they never were boring to me: I watched the show last month for the first time, and I don't know, might be because I was expecting the "will they won't they" dynamic, or maybe because I was binging the show and I was so invested in the story and the characters that I didn't stop thinking if I liked what I was watching, but really, but I never felt bored watching them together and I always felt they had chemistry. Still, I prefer Lois and Clark. I disagree on the fact that they didn't have romantic or sexual chemistry, it was always there, since season 4, underneath all the things they said and the way they talked to each other. Speaking of which, I think there's one thing I rarely see people mention in comments or videos I've seen and read, which is: Lois and Clark TALKED to each other. Yes, Clark and Lana had chemistry, but their chemistry consisted, for the most part, in looking at each other and staring at each other, which was still fine because as a spectator you believed their looks were looks of people in love with each other. But when did Lana and Clark had a normal conversation, talking about, I don't know, a common passion? Lois and Clark were both reporters, they had that as a common passion, and we saw that side of their relationship. What did Clark and Lana had? Riding horses? Also, Lana might have been the right person for Clark before she decided to be with Lex, because then, the person that she became, she wasn't the right person for him anymore. And I wish Clark understood that and decided to end their relationship because of that, instead of because they were physically forced too, but you can't be always happy, can you? Anyway, just think about the way Lana and Lois acted with Clark, especially after they learned his secret. Lana, before, loved him and respected him, but then she felt the need to gain powers herself in order to feel "equal" to him, because in her eyes Clark was this perfect, flawless man. Lois, on the other hand, never idealized Clark, she always saw the human, full of flaws, side of him, even after she found out the truth, and she fell in love with that side, first. Lois made Clark more human. And this is the reason I like them A LOT more as a couple, they just make each other whole
well said, thats my exact thought on this matter, clois was so... smooth, they had the best development as a couple, I literally watched the last 2 seasons just because of their relationship, not to mention lois was waaaaay more interesting than lana, although lana was kinda great at some points too. but absolutely loved lois and clark, specially that episode where they are dancing on the barn and clark actually flies without realizing it. my fav episode ever.
I was a big fan of the show but I liked the earlier seasons. Perhaps because of constraints and different sets of showrunners they had some bad adaptions of characters and Im surprised at the nostalgia romantiscim of it. I think Lana caught a bit too much hate but they were basically tying her to a redundant storyline with Clark rather than moving her to a plountonic relationship which maybe they didnt cause Chloe occupied that space (I did think Lana was interesting in seasons 6-8 in retrospect) And I agree that while Lois was great and the best interation, the shippers and show also kinda kinda forced it with them too but thats still a CW show being a CW Show. Its a show that had a lot of identity crisis trying to please different audiences (Teens, nerds etc) and being the first of its kind. But Im glad your video highlighted that the show did not have its problems because of one character but everything.
Lex (the best character) and Lana (yes, I liked her a lot more than Lois) leaving was when the show died for me. I don't remember the latter seasons in the slightest.
Yeah I think they are adapting the season 11 comic into a animated movie which should be cool cause we can actually here Tom Welling as Superman for once.
It's split into 3 main focused eras. 1.high school season 1 to 4 2.metropolis season 5 to 7 3.daily planet season 8 to 10 Which is considered the best seasons.
@@CometStar100 tom said he willing to finally put on the suit the next time around, (maybe smallville 25th anniversary) I think the 3 reasons 1. Superman and Lois how phenomenon they show superman. 2.spiderman no way home, gave him that I want to do that feeling. 3.his kids, he doesn't want to disappoint them, bad mouthing you never put on the suit, he wants to inspire them.
I can and did. Why? Because it’s not Chloe you idiot. Those things were done by Allison Mack, the actress that plays Chloe. However that is not the character.
Clark and Lois had great chemistry in season 4 when she was still guest starring, the scene where she dunks Clark into the water pit was a perfect example of it but I think the show creators realized they need to tune it down so they kept her as an afterthought until the show creators left.
I feel like the problem in my opinion that, they making Clark a Luke Skywalker-like character in Season 1-7, in season 8-9 they make him more like Batman.
The fact that the platonic dynamic between Lois & Clark worked better than the romantic _is why it worked, realistically speaking._ Romance excites the blood flow but it has no stamina, same with casual sex & giving fuck me eyes: It wears out eventually, because hormones don't last forever. No staying power. ~ This applies to writing a relationship as much as real ones _Bonds & friendship_ is a better bet if you want to marry someone or write characters that are going to marry, which is why i can definitely buy 100% that those two would be happily married with children with no chance of divorce. Why? Cause their dynamic has actual substance, a legit foundation. *Another example is Barry Allen & Tina from the 90s Flash,* they had a very platonic relationship, Barry even verbally describes it "Intimate but Platonic", very little romance but so much respect. Thus it worked so well because it was beyond sex appeal, it was believable. People need to be taking notes, on god lol.
The day Smallville died? So... the series finale? Or are you talking about that cameo in "Crisis on Infinite Earths"? THAT could very well be considered "the day Smallville died" I know it was for me. However... I agree with pretty much everything that you said. Especially the part where you talked about Supes running through his entire rouges gallery before he was even Supes... particularly Doomsday. That was stupid... but I will admit to having enjoyed the episode. In fact, I don't think there was ever even one episode of Smallville that I didn't like. And Erica is fucking adorable. But they had more chemistry as married parents in a 5 minute CW cameo than they had during the entire original series' run. And Supernatural rules... you should do a video on the *GEM* of a fucking show! Edit: That's not a small gripe, to me. They should have started calling it "Metropolis" after a certain point... like, maybe open season 6 or 7 under the title "Metropolis". That could've worked.
@@parkerboy795 Yes that's where the series was originally gonna end but then season 6 happened and then that was decided to be the final season but nope. Starting with season 7 is just going on and on.
With the Arrowverse giving us the multiverse and Crisis, I can accept Smallville as it’s own universe. I loved this show from seasons 1-10. 1-5 were my favourites and 6-9 had some amazing memorable moments for me. And my favourite episodes from 10 were Lazarus and Dominion
Haha Clark pining over Lana was peak early 2000’s 😂🤣 those scenes with Clark/Lana at the end of episodes with a song playing in the background were adorable
There was physical attraction between Clark and Lana. They really did not know each other, plus they were supposed to be teenagers Sometimes, those teenage crushes are based on fantasy. As they got closer and they got older, the fantasy wears off. Reality comes in, and they grew apart. There were too many lies and secrets between them. The trust was not there to begin with. Clark and Lois, when you look carefully, there was an attraction. The banter between them was natural. They got closer and in time independed on each other. Shared their thoughts and feelings of what was going on in their lives. It deepen their connection. They both cared for each. Love grew. It was not forced. Remember the difference of puppy love and real adults in love. Friendship is the basis of a lasting relationship.
@@Quietstormgirl You couldn't be more wrong if you tried... I have a long list of scenes that prove Lana and Clark were a far better love story than Lois and Clark.. Lois never cares about Clark, she thought of Clark as a dork for 4 seasons and never suspected him to be anyone worthwhile. Lois is completely surprised when Clark turns out to be the Blur. Lois cared about Oliver and when she suspected he was Green arrow she did everything to find out his secrets. Lois never supports Clarks whereas Lana was there for him so many times... the list with scenes and episodes is below... In Season 3 Ep 4 After the commando Anti-meteor vigilante tells Lana he k!lled Clark.. Lana attacks him and then instead of saving herself she risks her life to report the attack on Clark to the cops. Lois never risked her life for Clark even once. In S05E13, After Clark's father's watch is stolen Lana goes to all Metropolis pawn shops and finds the watch, despite the fact that she was upset at Clark for keeping secrets from her. Jonathan's death is one of the most difficult times for Clark but Lois is never once seen consoling Clark. What kind of friend is that? This despite how much the Kent' had supported Lois during her time in Smallville. In Season 1 and 2 there are dozens of scenes where Clark and Lana support each other throughout their emotional struggles. In Season 2 Episode 11 Lana says she doesn't care about Clark's secrets. In season 2 Episode 21 Lana initiates relationship with Clark despite knowing he is not being honest with her. It is Clark that pushes her away throughout because of his fears of hurting... Lana is always there for him. The real truth is Clark never cared for Lois anywhere near as much as he cared for Lana. Clark never shows as much fear for Lois safety and welbeing as he does for Lana's welbeing. Lana says in Season 5 episode 3 after Clark was shot and was lying in hospital unconscious that from the first moment she saw him she knew Noone could make her as happy as he could but she also knew that he would always be running around trying to help others, and that this day (aka the day he is dying in hospital) would come and it was what made her pull away. In short, Lana loved Clark and Clark loved Lana from the first moment they saw each other. Further more, In Season 1 episode 19 seeing Chloe and Clark become closer Lana decides to break up with Whitney but doesn't because Whitney's father dies in that episode. In season 1 episode 10 Clark and Lana nearly kiss but Clark decides not to go for it because he knows Whitney's father is ill and kissing would hurt Lana later. Only reason Lana doesn't break up with Whitney in season 1-2 is because of his father's illness, later his death and Whitney going to war. In Season 3 she does everything she can to make things work with Clark after he runs off and only gives up after she is literally brainwashed by magent boy in season 3 episode 7. Despite being brainwashed her love for Clark only slightly reduces, and she tells Clark she won't wait for him forever. In Season 4 Finale, Lana eventually confesses her Love to Clark again and freely gives the Element key to Clark. She denied the element to both Jason and Lex. S04 Episode 19 where Clark loses his memory and falls for Lana with just one look, and S04 E21 where Clark and Lana find and raise a baby together are also examples of their love for each other. In S05 Clark breaks her heart because he couldn't continue hurting her by lying to her about his powers and inability to be physically intimate with her... And she goes into a tailspin of depression which almost results in her death S05 episode 17. Lex then takes advantage of her extreme emotional vulnerability to manipulate her into sex and later convinces her marry with false pregnancy. She only marries Lex because Lionel threatens to murder Clarke if she doesn't do it. Lana dies, get tortured, enters into a false marriage, absorbs Kryptonite all to protect Clark. The sacrifices she makes for Clark are so many and so large that Lois can't hold a Candle to them... Also Lana despite everything never disrespects Clark which Lois continuously treats him like an immature boy for 4 years. Lois sees Clark fully nude in Season 04, but shows almost no s€xual interest in Clark till Season 8. Lana befriended and fell in love with the boy next door and vice versa... They were both orphans, both came from the same background and had a lot in common. Lois's love for Clark has no basis, she thinks he is a dork, their love is just something written into the script to make comic book fans happy. Lois first comes to smallville she hat€s Smallville because it's a boring small town. But then she just keeps coming back why? It's written in the script that is why... Lois is supposed to be an Army brat raised by an hororable general but from the moment she comes she behaves more like a spoiled brat. At first she imposes herself on the Kents and abus€s their hospitality without doing anything in return for them. Even Lex was a better house guest that Lois. Also Lois's alleged closeness with Chloe never makes it on to screen and is never explained. Chloe lived her entire childhood in Smallville, Lois never even came to smallville before Season 4 so how were they so close? Chloe has more sisterly scenes with Lana than Lois. Lois is a badly written character in Smallville first she hat€s Smallville then she can't get enough of Smallville. First she thinks that Clark aka the extremely handsome guy who is over 6 ft tall and has a 6 pack is a "los€r". Any number of comments where she puts down Clark to other Characters across multiple seasons is proof, this only changes in later seasons. Clark also is not physically attracted to Lois unlike his electric biological and even generational attraction to Lana. Remember Jor-El had an affair with Lana's great Aunt not Lois's great aunt. I am not saying Lois and Clark can't hook up but it's at best a mild attraction. They have very little in common, they are not physically attracted to each other much. Like I said before, Lois and Clark is more like a boring accountant romance. Lois and Clark is a relationship of convinience which is real life would either lead to an unhappy sexless marriage or a break up... Lana and Clark are true soulmates, they are torn apart by circumstances beyond their control not each other.
I actually watched Smallville when it was coming on TV and now own all the seasons. This is and will always be my Superman/Lois/Clark story. I agree that Lana/Clark were very cute in the first 2 seasons, but afterwards stuff just got silly between them. Like you, I never understood the unnecessary lies or late realizations about honestly when it came to their relationship. They made Lana intragyral to plots that honestly shouldn't have had anything to do with her (or her relationship of the season). That relationship was drawn out way too long. I have to disagree about Lois/Clark having a forced romance. They showed several times that Clark had feelings for Lois since he met her but couldn't name it b/c the constant Lana drama. Smallvilles' Lois/Clark have been the hottest example I've seen of all their pairings (Adventures of Superman Teri/Dean being 2nd). They felt real to me. All their "drama" felt real. & their relationship certainly felt genuine; especially with how it developed from constant bickering, to friends, to best friends/co-workers, to lovers. Honestly, I take Smallville as a separate Superman story from what the comics have given & that's ok. Cloie & Oliver were also hot & had a bit of lead up with everything they went through in season 7/8 with Clark/keeping secrets (Cloie was also clearly attracted to Oliver the moment she saw him).
@@skurinski plot is what kept Lana tethered to Clark lhh. Lana should've stayed gone once the show moved to Metropolis. That relationship is the definition of toxic. They were infatuated with each other, that's not love.
the thing that bothered me with lois and clark was how it dragged on and she was in love with him and he not to her. Usually Clark has unrequited love for her. instead he was like me and her no way for cheap laughs
honestly, clark and Lois were amazing and probably my favorite iteration of Lois and clark ever, having Lana on the show past season 4 was the end of smallville. although I absolutely cherish the series run, probably the greatest CW DC show of all time.
Oddly enough about Welling and Dunce chemistry there was rumors they had a affair in the latter season and since then at con panels they always seemed tense around each other.
This video is 3 months old, and we saw this was “Superman Earth 167” in the multi verse, where he choose a different path. Same foes, but different universe- so much that he used blue/gold kryptonite on himself married Lois, had kids and no longer had his powers - he lived the rest of his life and obtained what he truly wanted. Even Lex had his entire childhood/memories/evilness wiped out at the end of the season where he became a president, even Clark wasn’t stressing about. I grew up on this show, lasted me pre military all the way to the end when it stopped airing I got out lol, so it was fun having it side by side and could always look forward to next season. It’s a great show on its own, knowing that it’s an alternate universe.
9:24 Nah Vee. Clark and Lana's whole relationship sucked. There was no love there just teenage lust. Didn't help that Lana was an annoying Mary Sue the show tried to make people believe was some flawless angel when she was a self righteous hypocrite who said she hated secrets and lies only to keep secrets and tell lies herself, when other characters did wrong the show acknowledged it but Lana was treated like she could do no wrong. Even when she was with other guys she'd get jealous of Clark with other women.
Dean Cane and Teri Thatcher will always be my Lois and Clark. That's my favorite superman story. But Smallville had my favorite Lex Luther. It was sad to see the show fall.
For me it was after Lex left that I felt it really change, but the whole Lex and Lana relationship wasn’t for me either. I will say the Clark and Lois relationship was fantastic throughout though. Erica Durance was Amazing!
It really annoyed me that when the brought Tom back for that cameo in the crysis event it turns out he'd given up his powers, I get he wants to be there for his kids but (in my opinion) it kind of invalidates smallville. What was the point of the show if he's just going to throw away his powers. I'm thinking about it way more than I should, I don't even watch any of the arrowverse shows anymore 🤣
There are convincing arguments for him to do it and for him to not do it. Me personally, I see it as another world that followed Smallville's history until Clark gave up his powers and the one we watched continued in the comic continuation.
Same. They spent 10 years developing Clark's powers and having him learn to accept his destiny. Then, about 10 years later we find out that he had thrown it all away sometime earlier. So basically they spent more time setting up something than it would actually last, completely invalidating the series.
I saw that same scene but the writer's for that show kind of screwed up. Clark sold the farm to live in Metropolis with Lois in season 10. So, how is it that he's living back on the farm? ? ? ? Somebody didn't do their homework.
well i mean he already beat all of his villains. and there already a bunch of heroes established way before he put on the cape, even the justice league already formed so what was the point of superman? plus he was superman for 8 years before retiring.
Michael will always be the person I think of when someone mentions Lex
Live action Lex?
Rosenbaum is best, hands down.
But the voice... animated Lex always wins out because of that.
Now if we could get Rosenbaum's portrayal and general look, with Clancy Brown (the voice actor from the DCAU) doing the voice?
THAT would be amazing!

I grew up with Smallville, so it will always be special to me, Clark and Lana went on for way too long and they should of had Lois and Clark together a lot sooner,
I'm surprised you didn't mention Smallville's biggest offender, which is how EVERY TIME Clark saves a companion who didn't know he had superpowers, they had to be randomly knocked unconscious by the plot, so that they would remain unaware of his abilities lol Growing up, I hated that so much
Also Clark not being subtle about his powers at all made him seem kinda dumb to me, but over time got really funny
Or memory wiped
Lex should have brain damage from all those knock outs
At least they didn't give him a fucking magic memory erasing kiss, like the Christopher Reeves movies...
Imagine him having to kiss Lex everytime he witnessed something "Supermanish"?
THAT ... would've turned the show into a comedy!
that was kind of a 2000s show cliche
The teenage friendship between Lex and Clark calls back to silver age Superman... Smallville got it right with a few twists...you couldn't take your eyes off Rosenbaum as Lex.
Rosenbaum was excellent as Lex 💯 💯 💯
Smallville animated series is next soon.
Rosenbaum = The Best Lex.
To be fair, this dude very clearly never watched the show. Just based on the few minutes I managed to suffer through, he doesn't even seem to read comics.
And that was one of the brilliant points of the show, I waited with anticipation when Clark becomes Superman A) Lex still doesn’t know that’s Clark Kent and he’d rant and vent with Clark about Superman or B) Lex would know but instead of exposing Clark’s secret he chooses not to because in Lex’s world “why would I do that?” Or he’d say “And stop all the fun?”
Neither happened.
I always found it kind of unsettling how smallville is supposedly a small, rural town, yet every episode, at least one person dies and no one seems to care or remember. It makes sense in Supernatural because they travel all over the country, but you would think that many deaths in one area would raise some red flags to its remaining citizens.
Kind of like Buffy.
I agree Darkseid and Doomsday are villians a young Clark Kent should not be able to defeat.
Lois did call Clark Smallville as a nickname, so you could argue it’s still about Smallville but rather Clark than the town.
Lois a bland character? Clark/Lois a forced romance with no chemistry? And here I thought I'd take this video seriously.
That’s where he lost me too. 😂
Still a great TH-camr.
Agreed…. I hate that “Smallville” Lana Lang. Lois Lane had much more chemistry with Clark. Lana needed to leave the show, after Season 5.
💯
same on every front of your comment
Lanaville is horrible. They still got the best Luthor
Ill never forget the episode where lana got a taste of clarks powers, and when figuring out what to do they decide to go for a quiet afternoon quickie that almost break the town and has chloe so worried she has to tell clark lmaoo
that was so goddamn funny
There was fucking earthquakes, it reminds of a Robot Chicken sketch about Krypto being in heat and utterly demolishing a car as he’s humping it.
that was season 8😅😅
@@ilhamrj2599 Season 7 actually... Season 8 Lana was only there in a some 3 episodes.
Chloe’s reaction to the “yeah, that was probably us” exchange was priceless. I can remember in the early ‘60s the whole conversation about how Supes could do some serious damage when he finally “let go” - those little swimmers breaking the sound barrier, etc.😂
Honestly for me Smallville kind of died when Micheal left and definitely lost a part of itself afterwards
Agreed
Yep Smallville died after season 7.
He was getting tiring by that point. I would made him recurring from that point
Indeed
Lois ruined Smallville
@macgyversmacriley5604bruh
Lana was THE WORST
@@skurinski No, Lana ruined Smallville.
On a sad note, it's still hard to believe Lee Thompson Young (Cyborg) took his life at 29 in 2013. I hope he's at peace.
Taking ones life typically doesn't bring peace
I didn't know about that.😢 He was so handsome. I wonder what was going on in his life.
Lois always felt like Clark's second option to me, a rebound.
I think my least favorite episode was vampire Lana
Despite the flaws of smallville, it still gave us so much, and all of the flaws were outweighed.
Exactly there's so many amazing things about it that the negatives you can easily overcome
The nostalgia factor is what makes Smallville stand the test of time, it’s the first Superhero show a lot of nerds today saw and loved. I remember starting with season 2 and rewatching it multiple times because it was the only season I had, then I became obsessed and 10 years later I’ve rewatched every season multiple times

As he grew, I felt I grew with him and it made me appreciate Superman as a character and his entire mythos due to this show
Season 9 was meh..
@@TodaywithJulius not really but ok. It had a lot of solid moments and featured a more proactive and self assured Clark. It had more consistency with each episodes and a stronger front end
@@michealmahmoud6391 Meh.

Too be fair. The actor for Johnathan Kent wanted his character to give him the suit and happily received a pay cut for it.
John Schiender if i spelled that right? is his name my apologies if i did
A suit he never wore.
@@thribs didn't he wear it in the. Finale? We didn't see him wear the whole thing but we did see part of it

@@thribs oh okay I think I remember reading they picked that one cause it fit more with the shie the the classic original
I think it's really interesting you say he did way too much before he was Superman, because I thought that was one of the great things the CW did with him when he came back for crisis. He seems like the only Superman that would say fuck it, give up his powers, and start a family. He's been saving the world since he was in high-school. Defeated all his enemies before he put on the suit. I feel like he would have done the Superman thing for a bit, but by the time the Justice League was in full effect he would have been rendered basically useless and has earned more of a rest than most Supermen.

i agree but people would argue why do it for a year? it's funny how pissed off people are that he never put the suit on when that was the Deal when it was brought to him back in the day. it was never the intention to do that either by it's creators really only cause it's not about superman but Clark Kent. but i would have loved to see him kick ass in the suit in the finale though
@@rolandofgilead43 like I said he had already basically done everything. I feel like once he put the suit on it was probably just too much and the Smallville world doesn't seem like it needed him too much, so yea retirement well deserved, but I couldn't agree with you more

I remember when they would switch days and time slots, 1st it was tues, then Wed, and then Thursday if my memory is correct
How do you leave the apartment in the middle of the night?
Martha? Why did you say that name? (In batman's voice)
I’m trying to remember I’m pretty sure Lana’s bio dad just disappeared, the last thing I remember him doing was helping Johnathan get cleared after he was framed for murder. Pete showed up for an episode in season 7 and then just disappeared off the face of the planet again.
Lucas was busy in mystic falls 😉

I’m not surprised that Lionel slept with Lex’s nanny and his wife’s nurse, which produced two bastard children. As for Julian, that backstory lead to one of the best episodes of the series: Memoria.
I’ve been watching the show recently and my god do they torture poor Lana throughout it. Someone needs to count how many times she was at the hospital in the show. you’d think the doctor would be suspicious at some point
Nah, the doctors are probably all high on meteor rock
She was suffering alone after Clark broke up with her in Season 5, that she started using that green liquid stuff to see her dead parents and I hated Clark for it. None of them were ever there for her, that's when she turned to Lex
It's impossible to look at Allison Mack now and not thinking about what she did.
Yeah, I think it's best to separate the art from the artist. She gave some great performances on Smallville.

Totally agree. Started falling off when Lois came; and totally left when they started the Cloe/Ollie arc.
Certainly the most entertaining
Their relationship was annoying she never took accountability for anything she did wrong blamed Clark it made me not like Lana
Really, Amy Adams is your example of "bland Lois"? She was imho way way better Lois Lane than Margot Kidder for example.
Thanks for creating this video man. I didn't expect this much content to come over a decade after the series ended.
Yep and a certain cast member ended up joining a cult.
Damn!!!
Maybe that show replaced your dad...good timing i guess🎉
I would say when Lex left the show, that was when Smallville definitely dipped in, at least, my enthusiasm for the show. And Tess definitely didn't replace in him anyway. But when Zod, and then Doomsday came, I got into it again.
Agreed, except for Doomsday. In my opinion it was a cheap, dollar store version of the story, and not very interesting.
I was already impressed how real the scene of Lex hitting Clark with his car looked. Great effects for early 2000s
Right. I'm pretty sure there are better effects in the first seasons than in the later ones.
Super agree! The show should've stayed small & simple. & ended when Clark & Lana going their separate ways, with Clark going to Metropolis. Period.
Well DC did a comic series after the end of Smallville which was actually pretty good which shows how he operated as Superman after the series.
I thought the same thing about Clark and Lois on my first watch but I recently rewatched the show and I feel different about it. You can see it in the writing that they had a friendship that become romantic over time. Although I have to agree that Clark had better chemistry with Lana in the show.
I loved Erica Durance - for me, she was the definitive Lois Lane, but I just didn’t feel any chemistry between her and Welling, especially when comparing the chemistry between Welling and Kreuk (at least in the earlier seasons)
I just never bought Lois and Clark being anything more than friends
The episode where Jimmy Olsen was all of a sudden acting like James Bond. That episode was the worst episode I've ever seen on that show
Then you find that he wasn't the real Jimmy Olsen.
He’s also the one of the few to make the connection between Clark and the Red Blue Blur and he doesn’t get memory loss for it.
@@jbcatz5 He really should have been let in on the secret at the beginning of season 8. And he shouldn't have died.
Little did Chloe know one day she would find herself on the Wall of Weird
Damn!!!!
lol.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I feel like this is always a problem with prequel shows - after a few seasons, you run out of material. The show either has to end, or it has to stop being a prequel.
I loved Lois and Clark together! Their portrayal and chemistry were great!
I use to get up every day at 5 am before school to watch re runs. I got to see like 6-7 seasons in a row and I loved every moment
I love Smallville in its entirety, but they definitely did make some questionable choices. I think that it should have definitely transitioned to being called Metropolis for the last few seasons and they should have actually had Clark don the suit and become Superman at that point.
Tom didn't want to wear the suit until the finale.
Liked this show back in the day, but hated how Lana was almost universally talked up by seemingly EVERY character.
She probably banged every producer 🤣
My headcanon is that she has a meteor power that enhances her pheromones.
@@Hulkzilla0 Also she's played Kristin Kreuk and it was the early 2000s if you know you know lol
You’ll love Erica on this show called Saving Hope then, as well as the rest of the cast
One of my favorite shows
Of course the Superman origin story didn't go as well as we might expect, Tom Welling was really, really big on the no tights no flights.
Personally I hated Lana I’m glad she left lol just wish it could’ve been earlier
@@qdontae6 way overhated
@@qdontae6 She should have left at the end of Season 3.
@@Xehanort10 shit EPISODE 3 lol I hated her with a passion especially when she dated Lex
Smallville never died for me, I remember watching it when it first came out and I was in HS. Amazing show.
UGH! "Superman and Lois" You might have just earned your tagline.
Smallville was the coolest show on TV...and then it wasn't
For a second I read "Lois and Lana as Clark's parents" and I was VERY confused.
Amen!!!👏
Very well said. They actually had a real relationship. Lana was famous for being pretty...that's all! Lois had substance and passion
well said, thats my exact thought on this matter, clois was so... smooth, they had the best development as a couple, I literally watched the last 2 seasons just because of their relationship, not to mention lois was waaaaay more interesting than lana, although lana was kinda great at some points too. but absolutely loved lois and clark, specially that episode where they are dancing on the barn and clark actually flies without realizing it. my fav episode ever.
@@joelott7345 Lois was annoying
And for me it still tried to paint itself as a superman origin yet by season 8 or 9 it's practically just a normal super man adaptation
@@jadenbryant9283 by season 8 and 9 they were a Lois and Clark show but I still think it wasn’t a Superman show totally
I love Smallville. I was 7 when it first came out and I remembered loving everything about it, from the opening theme song to the actors and the story
Lex (the best character) and Lana (yes, I liked her a lot more than Lois) leaving was when the show died for me. I don't remember the latter seasons in the slightest.
In my opinion 4 seasons of "Smallville" was a good idea. Then they should have rebranded to an outright Superman series.
I never watched Smalville but now that the main cast is developing a continuation of the show and people are excited i have to watch it!!!!
Yeah I think they are adapting the season 11 comic into a animated movie which should be cool cause we can actually here Tom Welling as Superman for once.
It's split into 3 main focused eras.
1.high school season 1 to 4
2.metropolis season 5 to 7
3.daily planet season 8 to 10

I still can’t get over what Chloe has actually become in really life lmao
I can and did. Why? Because it’s not Chloe you idiot. Those things were done by Allison Mack, the actress that plays Chloe. However that is not the character.
Clark and Lois had great chemistry in season 4 when she was still guest starring, the scene where she dunks Clark into the water pit was a perfect example of it but I think the show creators realized they need to tune it down so they kept her as an afterthought until the show creators left.
I feel like the problem in my opinion that, they making Clark a Luke Skywalker-like character in Season 1-7, in season 8-9 they make him more like Batman.
The fact that the platonic dynamic between Lois & Clark worked better than the romantic _is why it worked, realistically speaking._
Romance excites the blood flow but it has no stamina, same with casual sex & giving fuck me eyes: It wears out eventually, because hormones don't last forever. No staying power.
~ This applies to writing a relationship as much as real ones
_Bonds & friendship_ is a better bet if you want to marry someone or write characters that are going to marry, which is why i can definitely buy 100% that those two would be happily married with children with no chance of divorce.
Is noone gonna talk about the comic cover of Superman passing the torch of protector of metropolis to a piece of fucking marble?
This show was lackluster, but Rosenbaum has been the best Lex Luthor ever.
kinda ironic that Amy Adams was in Smallville then went on years later to play lois lol
The day Smallville died?
So... the series finale?
Or are you talking about that cameo in "Crisis on Infinite Earths"?
THAT could very well be considered "the day Smallville died"
I know it was for me.

They were the leads of the show and they really REALLY sold it. They were the best and deserved so much better.
@@ohifonlyx33 i agree
no. they were super annoying. RUINED the show
There was physical attraction between Clark and Lana.
Cloie & Oliver were also hot & had a bit of lead up with everything they went through in season 7/8 with Clark/keeping secrets (Cloie was also clearly attracted to Oliver the moment she saw him).
nah, Clark and Lois always felt like friends relationship. Lois was his second pick cause he couldnt have Lana.
Smallville is one of the most import shows in my live, i literally would be a diferent person without it, it shaped me
Same here too
I owe my plethora of plaid shirts to Smallville
honestly, clark and Lois were amazing and probably my favorite iteration of Lois and clark ever, having Lana on the show past season 4 was the end of smallville. although I absolutely cherish the series run, probably the greatest CW DC show of all time.
In the animated series, Lana was the only person besides his parents that knew his secret identity.
LANA GETTING SUPERPOWERS
KILLED SMALLVILLE
Nah
Will always remember, the smallville soundtracks....
She also went through other people’s shit, she did it to both Clark and Chloe at one point.
Of the TH-camrs I like the least, I like you the most. Stay groovy bro
He already beat all his villains pre-Superman. Might as well retire early.
Season 5 is actually when the show started improving.
Yup, because Chloe knew Clark's secret and she could help him way better.
