THE BATMAN SHOW THAT CHANGED IT ALL

- The greatest Batman show this side of Batman The Animated Series.
The New Batman Adventures followed up the definitive Batman show and did it with style-- a brand new style.
Taking the iconic characters from the series and redesigning them from the ground up.
The show took a more cartoony approach to the material but still delivered some of the saddest stories and tragic moments of the entire DCAU.

That Scarecrow use to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid
“That’s Batman.”
I always felt that B:TAS and TNBA were comparable to the point where TNBA managed to continue some dark as well as fun stories that met its predecessor’s standards.
I loved this season! It was cool to see a continuation of Batman TAS with Dick as Nightwing, Tim as Robin and Barbara given more screen time. I’m still not a fan of the redesign of the Joker but everyone else’s looked cool. Not to mention this season opened the door for Batman teaming up with Superman.
Man, my first exposure to The Creeper was in this show, and man i really like him.
Also one funny thing i was thinking about him:
"Joker bootleg, made by the Joker, who is better than the Joker and scares the shit out of the Joker"
Also its a shame the show didnt got more seasons, since it was planed to have more of the Creeper.
This season has the most iconic batman TAS moments for me
Something I always wonder is when Batman is with the Justice League how is he keeping his secret identity a secret back into Gothem?
Does he do what Akira Toriyama does and live a very private life with only rare public appearances.
That does seem to be the case.
Scarecrow’s redesign is great
I get that SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES pushed the synergy issue of having Batman's world compatible with the Superman esthetics. The 3-part WORLD'S FINEST story arc essentially proved that TNBA was right to change the overall looks of the characters.
Even the voice acting got some upgrades when the redesigned TNBA came into being. I wasn't exactly mad or agrivated. It just felt a bit odd to hear Baby Doll, Killer Croc, even Batgirl getting different voices.
Regarding Joker... huh. Let's just say THANK GOD FOR BATMAN BEYOND! Course correction on their part with RETURN OF THE JOKER giving us 2 badass interpretations. Flashback Joker and Neo-Gotham Joker bothed looked great. Hey, change is inevitable.❤
If memory serves, back in that episode that explored Dick’s origins, Bruce had a batsuit without the yellow logo
Yup. When he gets his second, traditional Batmobile in the flashback from "The Mechanic", he wears the suit with the black emblem as well.
I loved the animated series
I miss the original dcau riddler
Can anyone name a Batman story that explains how the Bat cave was built and kept secret.
Batman begins
Alfred dug it out.
I think my perfect Batman look would be the costume from the first few seasons but with the cape draped over the shoulders like in the later iterations and with the Justice League utility belt and Bat-Symbol.
Happy Cinco All Batfans 🦇👍
DUDE I also thought Pretorious from The Mask series and Mr Freeze redesign looked super similar that sometimes I just mixed the two together at times
Didnt mind croc, baby doll, penguin, hatter
Best redesign was scarecrow
Worst was joker, Catwoman and the riddler.
I hope you're doing well vee :)
Weyoun played the Scare Crow?!?
*Mind blown*
“That’s Batman”
Finally, someone who doesn't hate the TNBA Joker design!
It's got a lot of personality, despite the toned down features. A lot less human than the other characters, really leaning into this pale giggling lunatic.
His smile is still uncomfortably wide, his frame is a little more angular and gangly, and his eyes are haunting and unpredictable. You can't really tell what he's thinking when he's staring you dead on with a fixed grimace.
That being said, the Justice League amalgam of the two really was the peak design.
"Bane's gone from a luchador to a BDSM enthusiast"💀
That's Batman
I agree both had greatness in them .
I actually prefer him in tnba his suit, look, and vehicle designs are so cool
The only real complaint I have about this show honestly it's just some of the redesigns weren't great but as a whole it's a fantastic continuation.
Still one of my favorite Scarecrows to be put on screen
Yea I want part two and I’d like to know what do you think about the ummm strange relationship between Barbra and Bruce and baby doll and crock … cause I was uneasy about them both … loved seeing their stories unfold though
I enjoyed it
Wow!
While not my favorite Batman animated series, I still prefer the previous one, even the 2004 animated series, when I think of the DCAU, this animated series comes to mind. Maybe cause I see the art style pop up more growing up.
Will you do a breakdown on the show Gothams Scarecrow and MadHatter
The new Batman adventures is a great and is underrated addition to Batman the animated series TNBA is one of the most mature darkest series and I'm surprised for a show that's for kids it gets away with a lot of dark and mature things over the edge is still one of the most beautiful and darkest episodes in the entire series till this day and once again IS A FREAKING KIDS SHOW
Do a follow-up on Batman shifting mentally and visually again in JL/JLU
While the Joker's redesign isn't as bad as some make it out to be, they still could've done a better job with the change. There's some actual fan redesigns out there that does a better job blending Joker's BTAS look with TNBA.
I love batman's costume change
The tie-in comics actually give sn explanation of why Catwoman's hair went from Blonde to Black. Still doesn't explain why her body type looks younger tho.
I like Bruce’s TNBA-onward face better than TAS.
4:34 Bruh
The one thing I hate about The New Batman Adventures is the relationship between Bruce and Barbara. Bruce Timm needs to stop with his Bruce and Barbara obsession it's creepy.
I would say that creepy relationship was in Batman Beyond and Mystery of the Batwoman. There’s no hint in TNBA and thank Great Rao for that!
@@prosperotorres7965 Thank Talos for that.
Yeah that mess was just wrong and he should've just kept that to himself. Batman and Batgirl are supposed to be mentor & young underling and nothing more!
I never saw it as a different show haha just a visual switch up, Isnt it the same universe??
Best Redesign: Scarecrow
Worst Redesign: The Riddler
But Batgirl didn’t really die in that episode. She is having a nightmare because she got hit by Scarecrow’s fear gas.
Ngl, I didn't like most of the new character designs in the New Adventures. Nightwing is the best. However the way all the women are drawn exactly the same use to bother me. Batman was bigger and colder.
LOL Nightwing's design isn't new, it never existed before. Even the thing you liked isn't valid.
You have interesting taste lol
Only problem with TNBA other than the godawful Joker redesign is that Batman was reduced into an emotionless robot. The best parts of BTAS were the moments Batman showed compassion to his foes like with Baby Doll. TNBA took all that away and makes Batman beat thugs in front of their scared children and not realize what he's doing until Robin has to pull him off.
It's not good character development but it shows he's getting tired of this crap
2nd part
I didn't like Batman on Fox kids .. However as soon as they moved to WB 20 and changed up the art work /designs of characters/adding more characters I was all in ... 🤷🏽♂️👍🏽
I really don't like the Scarecrow redesign. My favorite was actually the very first one in the series.
I never really liked this series, mainly because I feel like they took the compassion out of Batman that we love him so much for. He just felt so cold, and even cruel, which was NOT the Batman I knew.
The New Batman Adventures is hit and miss with me. Nearly all the redesigns suck. Batman: The Animated Series was much better.
I agree
Joker's redesign is still MUCH better than Leto's. I'll give you that at least. It's fine until the face. I don't like his face, but that's just me.
I didn’t like the move to make Killer Crock more reptilian. I guess I always saw him a circus strongman with a skin condition who really leans into his gimmick, rather than a literal lizard man.
The show generally seemed more unrealistic -
In addition to Killer Croc not being a man with a skin condition, but instead, simply feeling like a reptile, Poison Ivy had all-out, inhuman, green skin, the Joker has piercing black eyes, Mr. Freeze is a head in a jar (though this relates to character evolution, not character design), the sky is always red at night, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, and The Ventriloquist have black dots for eyes, and Catwoman seemingly has pale white skin in costume (it's never stated that she wears make-up, and it doesn't feel like it's necessarily, automatically assumed either). The angular character designs, though obviously being in-keeping with Superman: The Animated Series', distinctly feel less naturally human, though the colour palette actually is more photo-realistic, however. The Bat Signal also became cartoonish in its large size.
The show that ruined it all.
I like a lot of the characters and changes but strongly dislike the change to batman and bruce Wayne they seem like completely different people.
Please! Cut the Tara Strong part out of the outro! I can't stand her as Harley Quinn.
The Batman 2004 series is much better
LOL
Its unfortunate that you actually believe that.
I do agree personally The Batman 2004 is my personal favourite Batman show
I love that series, but nah. TNBA is probably the best of BTAS. Having some of the best stories, cleanest animation, and best character moments
The Batman 2004 is a underrated series but it will never hold a candle to the new Batman adventures and Batman the animated series and Batman beyond and Batman the brave and the bold
Nuh uh. 2004 better
should you really be using Kevin Conroy's cameo anymore? seems in bad taste now that he's gone
How’s that in bad taste ?
@@VI_V2 the man is gone and you're (and dont take it personally or badly I dont want to come off like I'm trying to attack anyone) kinda just using the image of a dead man for advertisement and he hasn't even been gone that long which kinda makes it worse that you're using him to promote your channel, yes you paid for the cameo and are in your rights to use it but morally seems like you probably should have retired that ending bit, maybe you could get a new cameo, maybe try Val Kilmer?
@@anthonysmith3415 I’d like to think it’s a way of keeping his memory alive. We bury the dead, not their contributions.
@@VI_V2 I mean you already are when you make videos of his works, which video great new video, it's just that it is essentially being used to promote and advertise your channel, and it does seem morally wrong, I am not judging or forcing you to take it down, your choice, just saying it does seem like a moral thing to consider
@@anthonysmith3415 There's nothing immoral to it. He was clearly alright with it when he was still around--- removing it now that he's not here to me seems like it'd be a better slap in the face. It's also a pretty awesome memory and I'm really happy I got to get him on the channel even in a limited capacity. I'm not looking to profit off someone who's not here, I have it there to show my appreciation of his work and admiration of a man who's no longer with us.
Tha animation looked so cheap and rushed.
Mad Love still blows my mind. It's so psychologically terrifying and acts as a perfect cautionary tale.
That’s Batman
IMO the best redesign is Scarecrow
Remember Mr. McGreg (with a leg for an arm, and an arm for a leg) from The Simpsons? If he was a Batman character, Vee would be able to make a 30 min video about him, and it would be interesting.
What a wonderfully random reference.
The new scarecrow look seems like it would fit The Batman from 2004 very well.
Right?!
Tim Drake felt like Kevin from Home Alone as Robin to me
The thing about Killer Croc is that he wasn't dumb in his first appearance, Vendetta. He was calculating and menacing. I'll always be grateful for "And I threw a rock at him!" in Almost Got 'Em (not actually Croc), but the dumbing down of the character was a peculiar choice. It's nice that TNBA course corrected, but the redesign (not to mention teaming up with Baby Doll) really undermines it.
I also hated that Mr. Freeze continued to be an antagonist following the events of Sub-Zero.
The thing is, that wasn't Croc who said he "threw a rock at him", that was Batman. However, I get why Batman would portray him that way as he did have a dumb brute sort of appearance, even though he was calculating and menacing in "Vendetta". Croc was never a joke in any way, but there's an in-between regarding both worlds here, I think.
@@tornadochaser2457 I pointed out that it wasn't Croc; it does say more about Batman that he perceived him that way (and the others, too that his "stupidity" didn't give away the disguise). Maybe he didn't get enough screen time, but he never felt the same after Vendetta. He wasn't bad in sideshow, but it wasn't the greatest episode, and the only other appearance I remember is Trial, where he's portrayed as more of a punchline.
@@greyonekenobi19 I wouldn't say he was a punchline in Trial, he was simply "there". He didn't do anything to standout. In Sideshow, he was forceful and desperate, but it felt perfectly in-character. In Vendetta, he was calculating and menacing because he had the time and resources to carry out a solid plan, as well as the motivation to ensure the plan stayed on track, without possible outbursts or a lax attitude to undermine things.
@@tornadochaser2457 "Punchline" may not be the right word, but some of the other villains are dismissive. When Joker fires his machine gun after the lights go out, this exchange happens:
Scarface: Don't... you'll hit Croc!
Joker: What's your point?
Batman dispatches him fairly easily after this. Croc also says "hit him with a rock!" during the trial in reference to Batman. It's funny, but it's a callback to "dumb" Croc. Aside from Almost Got 'Em, this really seems like the episode that cemented Croc's reputation.
@@greyonekenobi19 I think the Joker could easily do that to anyone, he definitely might be more inclined to do that to Croc as his "dumbness" makes him come off as less intimidating, but I can see him doing that to anyone else for sure. I agree with the other episodes cementing Croc a bit more as a dumb guy, but his possible ferocity, strength, and ruthlessness make him scary to me regardless, and I'm not bothered by his portrayal, it actually makes him standout more as a unique entity, being nicely diverse in a vast line-up of villains. To each his own, of course.
Poison Ivy got an explanation in the tie-in comics if I remember correctly- she isn't the "real" Poison Ivy, but one of her plant clones come to life, which is also why she has superpowers (and, indeed, why she looks younger).
Penguin...I guess, had plastic surgery or something.
Wow 🎉
Love both Batman TAS, The new Batman Adventures and Batman the Brave and the Bold
Can you make a video about the evolution of scarecrow in the dcau
I feel like people took a look at the redesigns and dismissed this season. But it was clearly done to be more in line with the Superman series which they regularly crossed over with. Everything else is still pretty top notch. And most of the designs are passable (yes, even the Joker).
Great video. I’d love multiple videos about this show!
it's too bad It didn't have more episodes
Great video Vee, would love a pt 2, also, if you haven't checked out Cardiacs (The last of the all Joker bands?) video of their number Tarred and Feathered, Then you're really missing out.
i loved it cause this is when it had that episode where superman poses as batman to help with crime problem in gotham when bruce goes missing
That was actually a Superman episode but same difference
@@avace917 ily
It's a Superman episode but I agree. I love that episode too. Especially when the Gotham Rogues are baffled by Batman's added endurance and strength. 😂
The was a superman episode.
Of the 4 crossovers between the 2 shows, this is the best IMHO
Umm it's called better quality. You can't expect 1992 Batman to look like 1995 Batman..
I think New Batman Adventures isn't as bad as people make it out to be
My only problem is some of the models look AWFUL(Killer Croc,Riddler,Catwoman is a HUGE downgrade from her underrated BTAS design Two-Face and Mr Freeze's heads are too small etc)
6:27 I really liked her new style.
30 minutes gang
I never liked the redesigns of the villains (Especially Joker with his beedy little eyes). Exception would be Scarecrow who became way scarier and less Wizard of Oz. Also, for some reason TNBA was localized, while the OG show wasn’t, so the voices/Language changing felt weird.
However, mostly I didn’t like how they made Batman more careless. It didn’t help that they always showed the crossover with Superman between TAS ending and TNBA starting. Imho that crossover tries way too hard to idealize Superman by vilifying Batman. This carried over in the Nightwing episode where he describes why he left. I just wish they had at least given a proper reason, like someone close to him dying or something that would explain why he suddenly became more aggressive.
Who's the Robin all the way on the right at 17:26?
Where can i watch the full show at im trying to find it?
Do clip about brave and the bold cartoon
I liked things about the show but not like BTAS.
Agreed.
I agree
TNBA is meh.
That's Batman
WoW another Batman video
7:00 like you I kind of enjoy this joker redesign. Is it my favorite no that is the Batman beyond return of the joker version. But I grew up with this version by watching the Batman/Superman animated movie so I am bias but the simplicity is a nice touch, but. I will admit he does look like a character from the DOUG show
For me to come over love it for changing choices and characters design still okay for me.
Plus: batgirl played Tara strong is pretty good by chance she really so young back then and now she really sounds like the batgirl from either comics from the adventures of Batman or New 52 stories that i use reading up along with rebirth comics.
Love the animated series
In this TNBA series Batman/Bruce Wayne really wasn't as likable and balanced in personality as he was before. I mean he was starting to be just plain rude and not even caring about showing restraint in front of those that are innocent when dealing with suspects. The original animated series was better!
Why couldn't a batman superman just be a direct remake if the cartoon meeting. Maybe fluff action if its to short. The heros meet fight there biggest rogues. And the best batman one liner from a cartoon of all things ever.
I miss Annie like robin, I hope DC BACK TO LIFE Annie
The cartoon used 2 be canon with the Burton movies, hence why the Penguin looked that 1st.
The comics tie-ins shown that Harley banged her teacher 2 pass the psychiatry exams. Either her relationship with Poison Ivy is still meant 2 be toxic, although not as toxic as with the Joker.
I love the redesign of Bruce in this.
But was never a fan of the Jokers change.
Scarecrow went the hardest though to bad they barely used him
Jeff Bennet Joker mentioned! Getting closer to a video about him?
I would Batman beyond changed the way but the animated series is still regarded as one of the best shows ever
Batgirl/Barbara Gordon is waifu material in this show XD she's an amazingly beautiful redhead, she's smart, she's brave and she's sassy. I love her and would marry her. She's so perfect.
I always thought Kevin Convoy playing Batman at all times in this season was on propose. To me it showed how far gone Bruce was in his Batman persona. The progression of Bruce losing his identity completely, further growing into what we see in Batman Beyond.
I would argue that this show wasn't better than Batman TAS because it was simply a followup on it. It's the same show
I’ve seriously never understood the hate for btnas joker I loved his design since I was a child
