There's actually an episode in the animated series where Harley captures Batman, and at one point, he laughs at her infatuations with Joker, calling out his manipulation. Harley is downright terrified hearing Batman actually start to laugh
That’s actually season 4 but it wasn’t called the animated series it was call the new adventures of Batman.
Ye that's Mad Love, one of the most famous Animated Series episodes of all time. Duuuuh
Batman also laughed in Underdwellers and Joker's favor, in fact there are plenty of episodes in BTAS where he also smiled, made wise cracks, and would even make small jokes every now and then. Anybody who says Batman has never laughed or smiled would be wrong as he has laughed and smiled in many adaptations while also keeping the dark and serious tone, including some comic books as there was one where he and Dick Grayson ended up play wrestling.
Also in Batman Beyond Return of the Joker; He laughs... It sounds way better though.

My problem with the Batman and Batgirl relationship is
1. Dick has dated Barbara and they have been engaged in the past
2. Its Jim's daughter
3. Batman would probably know self control

Their excuse is more legitimate as in they adapt mostly from bronze & dark age of comics where she was angsty , but I would have liked to see them incorporating more fun elements. Akiva goldsmith & the cast basically confirmed that in DC fandome that they will gradually incorporate more of the fun elements of the comics, truth be told I would like to see that.

His relationship with Starfire is non-existent
He chose Vengeance rather than Mercy on Tony Zucco and then later became a murderer killing criminals after leaving Batman he killed those guys in the alley in the first episode he blew up a mental hospital and he let Starfire kill a bunch of police officers who were just doing their job on the train
He beat up a bunch of security guards at an airport to lock himself up and later in prison beat up a bunch of guards
It kills me that they didn't take a simple fact into account. Killing Joke has nothing to do with Batgirl. The book doesn't mention Batgirl, Joker doesn't know Barbara is Batgirl, and that's purposeful. Once you introduce Batgirl to the story, you blur the lines.
She was nothing more but a plot device in both comics and movie.

I really liked Hamill's delivery of the final joke. He seemed to give it his all for final speech/Two guy story
Hamil has always done Joker great. TBQH, my favorite adaption of him
John DiMaggio did a better job delivering the joke in the death in the family. Honestly John does not get enough credit as Joker.
Too bad they rewrote it into the awful version we got.
The voice performances in the film are excellent, Conroy and Hamill will always be great as Batman and Joker, so yeah can enjoy their parts of the film with ease.

I like DiMaggio a lot, because he’s not doing a take on Mark Hamill’s version, or if he is it’s the least like Hamill, while still being excellent.
His Joker is very much a Joker written by someone else, as well as the way he’s drawn. He’s bigger and more physical.
When he kills Jason, he really makes Jason look like a helpless child in the scene, especially in comparison with his size and look.
If the Bruce/Barbara romance was supposed to be a bad idea, just for the drama. Than why do they keep coming back to it and shoehorning it in where it doesn't belong

When I first saw this movie I was not expecting batman and batgirl to have a one night stand. That for me was one of, if not the worst part of the movie. Their age difference and the teacher student relationship they have made it weird for me. I wouldn't say I saw a father- daughter relationship because she already had a living father who is from what I've seen is a good dad. I see it more as a uncle-niece relationship I guess if that makes sense.
Bruce Tim has an obsession with this ship and is trying to force it on the fans. It is honestly the worst ship in Dc comics for me.

Sorry for responding so late, but I also want to addd: It also has further repercussions for the mythos. Since then every stupid idea someone has to put weird, creepy relationships in Batman get defended with they did it before. Yes, they did. And it was stupid then. We don't need more stupid. Every time you watch Batman, Batgirl or Nighthwing you have s reminder of that scene. Always in the back of your brain.

Seriously, it gets my goat how often writers (execs?) can't allow characters to be trusted friends or symbolic family, it always has to turn into a romance or something sexual. Barbara only shares a page with Bruce in the original graphic novel and it still manages to illustrate the strength of their relationship as practically father and daughter.
I personally believe that Bruce Timm has wanted to make this pairing forever, he even implied it in batman beyond. I think he didn't have the guts to actually make a stand-alone story and basically used the killing joke to force it in
Let me point out the problems about the Batman and Batgirl relationship that have already been pointed out
1)There is a huge age difference 2) Batman is essentially banging his best friend's daughter behind his back 3) he is banging his son's ex-girlfriend 4)
The Batman Beyond 2.0 comic books did this and everyone hated it 5)
Batman got Barbara pregnant 6)
Telling his own son that he has been banging his girlfriend for the past year
Even though they were engaged and were planning to get married 7)
It makes both Barbara and Bruce look bad as characters
The age difference, I agree and this bothers me with "immortal" characters like Logan who fall in love with teenagers like Jean. Superman and lois work because they about the same age but you slowly see the repercussion of dating an "immortal".

@@naquingreen1603 there would be no point in making her a full kryptonian because we have super girl to fill that role in the series and the robot idea sounds real cool cuz you can make her absorb brainiac and kinda do a husband/wife redemption arc.
People do that kind of thing in real life to be honest. I just hated the movie because it sucked. Just wasnt well made.

For the record, I'm not a huge comic book fan, I have only seen the live action movies and played the Arkham games (I'm planning to watch the 90's animated series as well), I saw this movie last night, and was wondering why they hooked up in the middle of their job?, it's weird. Like correct me if I'm wrong but isn't batman the type of guy who prioritises stopping crimes over his own wellbeing and personal problems?. I just can't think of why batman would sleep with Batgirl on a rooftop while there are probably multiple crimes taking place.
They honestly did Batgirl so dirty. I understand to give her character more depth so when she's shot, there's more impact. But how they did that was just so weird and fragmented from the main story, it just a waste of time

It's poetic how what's considered one of the best batman comics translates to what's considered one of the worst batman animated movies. Seems like something the Joker himself would come up with

I saw it on Netflix recently, way after all the hype died down. I thought it was okay. Not great, not terrible, just okay. The Batman/Batgirl romance was lame and first 20 minutes was unnecessary, but it was still a quasi- serviceable film. But this story deserved alot better than semi-serviceable.
The part of TKJ that WAS TKJ was okay. The problem I have is what everyone seems to: THAT PROLOGUE.
Even the okay part I have issues with. (That fight with the "Circus Freaks" DID NOT need to happen...) But it's still a mostly good adaptation.

I went to see this in theaters and right when Barbara and Bruce, Batman and Batgirl started to bone the entire theater groaned. Now a Batgirl origin story would have served the purpose of attaching us to the character alot better than what we got. They need a redo.
The Killing Joke Movie Should have been a Slam Dunk for DC.
After doing an Incredible Adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, you'd think they'd handle the Killing Joke just as well, but the manged to flub that up big time.

Bruce sleeping with Barbara is just awful. It's like an uncle sleeping with his brother's daughter. Or a teacher sleeping with his student it's just wrong in so many ways
I loved the (non-romantic!) pairing of Batman & Batgirl on The Batman cartoon from the mid-2000s. That dynamic (amateur Batgirl trying to impress professional Batman) is actually my favorite Batman/sidekick dynamic in animation.
Which is why I HATE the disgusting implications of Batman/Batgirl romantically entangled. I wholehearted agree with everything you said about that - and I hate the implication that you cannot care about someone you've never slept with. (Not to mention that it makes Batman seems shallow & petty; mad at the Joker just for breaking "his toy.")

I grew up with this show, so The Batman is the definitive version of the dynamics between Batman and Batgirl and Batman and Robin for me. So when I see writers try to pair them together, all I see is a defilement of the characters and a violation of the dynamic that should exist between them
Allen Moore is great at expanding upon preexisting stories. The story of the Red Hood turning into the Joker, was a comic story from the 1950's.

I remember when I saw this movie when it came out... and I think it's worse than you give it credit for. The second half should've been an adaptation, instead of just using the comic as a storyboard, because animation and comics aren't really the same. And the first half? That's just one of the worst things the animated DC movies has ever done. In general.
Not only that. But the first half feels like we're watching an entirely different movie. It may as well have been released as its own fanfiction video via TH-cam.
Why not just throw 3 or 4 of the best single issue stories together, concluding with the Killing Joke? They could've recreated Heart of Ice or covered Batgirl's first appearance without ruining her whole character.

What's even worse is the Batman Beyond 2.0 comic books which were written by Bruce timm basically confirm that Bruce got Barbara pregnant while she was engaged and was supposed to marry Dick Grayson his own son and in a very out of character move Bruce basically tells him about his relationship with Barbara Grayson rightfully gets upset beats him and leaves
Also Barbara ends up losing her child

And that's not the only similarity that episode has to The Killing Joke. The Joker's backstory he tells Harley. Going back to the unreliable narrator.
The Bruce X Barbara relationship is unfortunately not only in this movie, but in DCAU as well. Both by Bruce Timm. Their relationship was shown in Batman Beyond and in the animated Batwoman movie.
That Death on the family idea had me almost drowning in my own tears. Liked and already subscribed
Well let's be honest. They handed this story to a guy that had a hard on to see Bruce and Barbara hook up and completely disregard the on again off again dynamic Dick and Babs have constantly in the comics. They are in love with each other but just not ready to commit. Bruce Wayne is in a romantic relationship with Barbara just like Tim Drake is a romantic relationship with her if you play Arkham Knight. They both dropped the ball on that character. Whose next on her list Alfred?
Based on recent comics, it might be Jason Todd.
@@houseoftheram that storyline with Jason Todd is the three jokers storyline comics that hasn't been confirmed be part of the actually continuity and actually the recent events that are going on now have Dick and Babs get unofficially married and when Nightwing 78 comes out Nightwing and Batgirl will be working together in Bludhaven. If three jokers were to count it would be a fling that meant nothing in the end.
The use of "Dude" and "Come on" in this video made me so happy.
The most disappointing thing about this movie, beside the sadly cheap animation making no justice to Bolland's work, is that "the Killing joke" is supposed to have a slow pacing, lots of panels have no dialogue, the art lets you think or imagining what goes through the minds of the characters, you feel their decent to madness there are spaces between the long monologues.
In the movie it just goes straight and fast, no time, no pacing, no mood setting, the comedians, no matter how great they usually are, are directed to spill their lines out by the minute. If the movie just took its time like it was supposed to, it could have worked on a deeper level, and spare us the useless 30 minutes prequel filler.
They also failed the ending while it could've been just simple and efficient to have the character's laughter disappear in the police sirens like in the comic. It really feels like they failed that on purpose.
This! They turned a psychological thriller into an action story. Such scenes as the roller-coaster or the mirror house are nearly hallucinatory in the book. As you said, there's a lot of panels with no dialogue, but they're always talking in this movie because of this fast-pacing non-sense.

even without the prologue it was pretty Mediocre. the voice acting was phoned in and the animation was uninspired

I remember me and my friends being beyond hyped for this movie. We set a day to watch it altogether. That first half hour literally tainted the rest of it for all of us.

It’s kinda insinuating that Bruce wouldn’t care about batgirl unless he was in bed with her. I always saw them as more of a father daughter relationship so it’s so weird like this.
13:06 And Bruce sees Jim Gordon as like a father to him much like he sees Alfred as a father. So having sex with Jim's daughter is awkward. Barbara sees Bruce as a father figure as well and is usually with Dick Grayson.
Dude thank you for this. The Batgirl degradation really gave me the gut punch of all gut punches. Batman had issues in JLU with dating with in the team as he said with Wonder Woman. Barbara was a kid and one on his kids. I found putting the sex in the relationship was just the creators putting it in as a cheap fantasy segment for a failed society. Batman should have been made to stick to high standards which holds true to his principles and holding it with the discipline he has exibited throughout his career. I did not notice the animation, voice work and other stuff you had mentioned in this video since that uneeded sexual romp. It was like eating the most beautiful meal and discovering midway someone's middle finger in it then having to wait for the powers that be coming over to buy you off with a coupon.
It is odd indeed Hamil played the Joker more or less seemingly Dialed down.
I would say Mark Hamill's performance is due to the voice direction, but I assume the voice director is still Andrea Romano, who worked on the entire DCAU.

They could've done anything to add with the story with the power of animation, and instead they chose to do nothing. That first half did nothing except steal away the budget. But more than that, I don't think they got it.
The moment I realized this was during the famous "Why aren't you laughing scene". I get everyone interprets things a different way, but in the comic, Joker clearly looks sad when he says the line. It's because the guy he used to be is slipping out. Instead, they have Mark Hamill strain his vocal chords by yelling the dang line. Poor guy is old! Doesn't help that the script writer is Brian Azzarrello, whose writing DOES NOT mesh well with Moore's, and who approved the "must be that time of the month line". That was ALL Brian.

I saw the theatrical screening of this. Never walked out of a movie in my life, but I came reeeeaaaalll close with Killing Joke. As a fan for decades, who'd been dreaming of an animated adaptation by Timm, Conroy, and Hamill for years, I couldn't have been more disappointed.

The Killing Joke movie, minus the beginning, was faithful to the source material.

In my opinion I really wish we could have gotten a Batgirl year one animated film instead of this this film does not portray the character in a good light

Definitely the worst. She comes off pathetic in this movie. If TKJ were going to add a loosely connected story to make it feature length there are SO MANY more fitting stories to tell. Like something about the Joker, or adapt a decent Batgirl storyline that follows the TKJ segment with her becoming Oracle, rather than her fixation on Batman being all that characterizes her.

I'm a massive Killer Moth & Firefly fanboy, and with this book being the definitive Killer Moth storyline... it would be a great opportunity to have Drury Walker become more popular with casuals ^_^
The only problem is that I'm not sure that one movie would be enough to adapt the 9 issues; we might have to make this a 2-parter, like the upcoming "Batman: The Long Halloween"
(and the excellent "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns", an extremely competent adaptation).

I remember seeing this on Blu-Ray at my sister's house, when I went for a weeks visit. My brother in law had it, and after everyone went to bed, I put it on to watch. I kept thinking to myself, "why is this beginning about Batgirl? What's wrong with her btw? She's acting sketchy, who wrote this $#!T?!" Then the sex scene happened, and I sat in shock during the whole transition for the ACTUAL adaptation that followed. Now, I'm gonna admit that ever since I was a kid watching the 60's Batman show, I had a THING for BATGIRL. I go coo-KOO for redheads, but all through the years, I ALWAYS had the same, non-changing thing for Batgirl. Now having said that, I still go "YUCK!" at the idea of Batman tentpoleing Batgirl. I'm not one of these Hentai idiots that enjoys seeing an illustrated masked Batman completely naked, pounding on Batgirl, either. I've seen stuff on the internet like that, and it doesn't do anything for me. I think it really IS the idea, that the integrity of either character just wouldn't lead down that road. While Batgirl might express a young girl infatuation with a take-charge kind of guy like Bruce/Batman, he would easily in my mind, have a falling out with Barabara/Batgirl over it, if need be. It would be on the same integrity level as Bruce having his falling out with Dick over differences of perspective. It's THAT important.
Yeah, Mark Hamill must've been told to tone it down a bit, because it didn't feel like a Mark Hamill Joker performance. And the animation was crap most of the time. I agree that since they didn't knock it outta the park, that it SUCKED. This story DESERVED to be a HIT. An average adaptation just won't do.
After the Harley Quinn tv show I will never look a gim Gordon again....

The points you made about Bats screwing Batgirl were on point. It made no sense to me, not to mention seemed WAY creepier with Batman being...Batman.
Let's be honest, if the Batgirl prologue was completely cut, and it was billed as a more adult oriented, extended lost episode of the Animated Series, the film would've been significantly better. Maybe not great, but still better.

It still isn't great. Its almost word for word ripped from the book and Joker's "why aren't you laughing" monologue is botched terribly. Tbh I just don't think this story works as a movie.

I have to say, when I bought the DVD and watched it later that day, I was very disappointed with the adaptation. Two years later, I bought the graphic novel from Waterstones (a bookshop chain we have in the UK) and I read through the whole thing cover to cover on an aeroplane flight to Italy. It's a masterpiece, the movie just sucked.

Yes, it was mostly faithful excluding the Batgirl short, but it looked awful and the performances weird so weird. I remember a fan edit that showed the art depicted just like Bolland's artwork. Just that alone would have made it better.
From the title, I almost expected Batman and Robin. I do agree however that this just might be worse in many aspects.
At least in Batman and Robin, there were segments that reached So Bad It's Good status. But here, segments reach So Bad It's Horrible
I bought the regular copy that costs like 20 bucks. Art was great, with re-coloring by Brian Bolland. But I had to splurge on the super expensive version, to see the ORIGINAL art. Also very good. More haunting, tbh. More psychedelic. A great story, all around.
Honestly, I feel like Mark Hamill's Joker doesn't fit this version of Joker because his Joker is more wild and zany. There's more stretch and bend to the way he plays him. But this Joker is very serious and more...."real." He's not as cartoony in his mannerisms, looks or actions. So they're a mismatch of styles.
Maybe Hamill didn't like the script either so he didn't give it his all.
I saw this movie in theaters with a friend of mine and when the scene of Barbara and Bruce doing it happened, we both turned and looked at one another with pure, open-mouthed shock.
Hamill and Conroy did really great but Barbara with Bruce is too close to incest for me as he's very much a father figure to her. That was even worse than when Talia raped Batman and thus was the conception of Damian not to mention Raj is very much a father figure to Bruce/Batman
In terms of age difference, my dad had an anecdote related to that. On his first Navy tour as an officer and his crew would go on shore leave, his CO would tell the younger men going to bars that "the minimum number is half your age plus seven years".
And yes, I'm really not a fan of age differences like Batman and Batgirl, but what I hate even more is the concept of a mentor-student relationship. If that starts, no matter what, those two will never be equals in the relationship. At square one, there is already a huge imbalance in experience and influence.
(That's one of the reasons I could never stand playing Jedi in SWTOR. The female love interest is your apprentice.)
I think Mr. Hamill played the Joker differently based on his interpretation of the comic and to differentiate this Joker from the Dini-verse version. Wasn’t a problem for me. The Bruce-Barbara one night stand, on the other hand…

I like the movie, love it when it gets to the killing joke part.
But the first half with Batgirl wasn't great. They could have focused on Barbara in a different way if they wanted to focus on her before joker shoots her.
I just found your channel and watched a few videos, as for the art style I really feel like DC wanted to make in the timmverse style but didn't want to go all the way, several elements remind me of the timmverse in this from batgirl's batsuit, joker's clothes, the direct reference to the laughing fish... but they couldn't because of how dark it was so they tried to alter it and make it more adult which... made it look awkward...
