Shrek Forever After is the real Shrek 3; hell, the promotional posters refer to Shrek FA as ‘Shrek 3D: The Final Chapter’, and considering how many three-quel movies/ games carry the 3D moniker it’s quite fitting for the franchise’s overarching narrative and themes.
I recently rewatched Shrek 4. Boy that movie is underrated. The cinematography, the direction... It's a beautiful looking, thrilling movie. Different, yes, but really, really good.
Let the ogre die...and let people finally understand that Shrek Forever After is legitimately and unironically a good movie. I'm glad I saw it in theaters with one of my friends 😀
The 3rd movie was so disappointing that I ended up deciding not to see the 4th one in the theater which I regret immensely cause it turned out to be one of my favorite movies in the series cause Fiona is my favorite Shrek character and it did a lot of cool character exploring with her. And the 4th had great emotional moments too. The 3rd one just lacked in comedy and the way Charming ended off his story in 2 suggested to me that he wasn’t horribly hateful toward Shrek and was sort of happy to have his own choices outside his mom. (Him dancing with the Stepsister, a gruff barmaid, rather than being so fixated on royal status). Plus I thought Shrek and Fiona would make for good rulers so having dopey little Arty show up and get thrust into leadership was a dumb twist.

The reason Shrek Forever After downplayed the fractured fairytale aspect because the franchise needed something new and the idea of fairytale parodies had become a dead horse trope at this point.
Shrek Forever After was severely negatively impacted by Shrek 3. The audience view on the Shrek name was that it was just another typical kids franchise that only makes movies for the money and nothing else. Shrek Forever After really added and concluded Shreks journey as a character from wanting to be alone and not liking anyone in the first movie, to acceptance in Shrek 2 and capping off with being happy and grateful with what you have in Shrek 4. Shrek 3 not only was a mess of a movie, but did not really contribute much change for the characters which is one of many reasons why 3 hurt the franchise
There's always that misconception that Illumination is handling the Shrek and Puss in Boots reboots, which is not true. DreamWorks is making them, it's just that Illumination's founder works as a senior adviser for DreamWorks, and Puss in Boots 2 is scheduled for 2022, and since it's being done at DreamWorks, that means the Shrek revival will be done at DreamWorks as well.
Shrek 1 - The Most Classic Shrek 2 - The Most Creative Shrek The Third - The Most Hated (tbh it isn’t terrible) Shrek Forever After - The Most Underrated
The third isn't terrible as a movie, it's terrible as a SHREK movie. Compared to the rest, it's bad. If you don't compare it and just enjoy it for what it is, it's not that bad
Everybody has their opinion. To me, I've never been able to watch Shrek 3 entirely bc I find it so bland and boring. Every single time it pops up on tv I really try to finish it, but I just can't. The lack of comedy and creativity is really apparent. I guess I just need to switch my brain off and don't look at it as a Shrek movie , and just as a regular movie ...maybe I would finally finish watching and maybe appreciate it.
Yep. Freeform and Comedy Central skip the third film entirely. That's hysterical. Especially shocking considering that Freeform shows some pretty bad movies like Cars 2 or Ralph Breaks the Internet.
I still think Shrek and Shrek 2 are both great movies! I really must rewatch them at some point! Shrek The Third is a downgrade, but I don’t hate it, it’s okay. Shrek Forever After is also dodgy, but I don’t hate it. It ended the story the best they could.
The ONLY GOOD scene in The Third, my personal opinion, was the princess fighting scene. Shrek 4ever was actually pretty good and the princess fighting scene could of been a whole short on its own.
I don't really remember the 3rd I really remember the second and first the 4th is clouded in my mind oh wait now I remember clearer second thought the brain is weird
Shrek Forever After also added another interesting spin to the whole true love thing. How kissing your true love isn't a true love kiss if they don't love you back. Disney added a spin to it with Enchanted and Frozen, but this particular take actually felt both genuine and clever. Also, every other time Disney tried to twist this trope ended up failing miserably.
I like Shrek Forever After, but there's one thing that if you think about too much ruins that movie, at least for me. Do you remember how long it took to get from Farquad to castle where Fiona was locked? Do you remember how long it took for Shrek and Fiona to get to Far Far Away kingdom? Now in the 4th movie Shrek gets from some random village to his swamp, then to Far Far Away, then to Fiona's castle in one day, even leaving some extra time for plot to happen. How is that possible?!
I don't mind the third movie, although they do add stuff that is unnecessary. but I have to admire the creativity. The illumination version looks like someone took a DIY of those 5-minute craft shit on Myspace back in 07'.
Honestly shrek, shrek 2 and forever after are really good it's just the 3rd one that I don't like ignoring the 3rd one shrek is basically the perfect franchise
I enjoyed Shrek the third as a kid because I didn't know any better but as I got older that shit did not age well at all😂 Shrek 1 and 2 are my favorites specifically 2. Shrek 2 is one of the greatest sequels of all time imo. I haven't watched shrek 4 in a while but from what I remember from it, it was a fairly decent movie. I will definitely give it a rewatch.
Fanon Discontinuity: *A major victim of this among Shrek fans,* who feel its only real impact in Forever After was a scene at the start where it's revealed Shrek and Fiona have had kids.
There were also Shrek gogurts, those were good. Some had a joke that read, which of Shrek's keys couldn't unlock his front door? donKEY something like that. Good times!
It's weird how Donkey Xote was most likely not even related to Shrek in the first place, but then some producer saw how popular it was and decided to add some stuff to make the movie more “self aware”. It really doesn't feel like it's trying to be Shrek, while feeling it's trying too hard.
It's usually not a good sign when the main villain of a movie is the old villain's number two lacky. It can be done -- if the lacky has their own agenda and/or kills the old villain to ascend to big-bad status. But a minor villain who has already been defeated coming back to avenge their much stronger boss? I can't name a time that's actually worked.
I was just the correct age to connect with SHREK when it was released and it was great. Almost as big as FROZEN. It was special. I didn't think SHREK THE THIRD was exact that bad, but it certainly wasn't that good. You are correct that you can go from 2 to 4. SHREK THE FINAL CHAPTER was not to shabby. So I guess you have two great ones, a not very good one, and a decent send off. Technically you are correct, as it did end after the initially sequel. Yes, the final movie was worth a see. Good discussion of the series.
In MY opinion, as a really really big fan of shrek since i was a toddler (bro my dream is not to go to Disney but going to Shrekfest), the 4th movie is not only the real 3rd movie, but the perfect finale. I really think its AS GOOD as the first two movies. But im too lazy to explain my thesis so... kisses my friends
Funny thing is that I never (and couldn't) go to any place that had Shrek 4-D playing, but I watched it on a DVD with the usual Red and Blue 3-D Glasses.
I can only see three routes another Shrek movie could take and have a chance at being good. First and probably the most risky, it's a full on reboot that's more faithful to the original book. Second, it's something completely outside the box like a crossover with other Dreamworks properties. Third and the one I think would work the best, it's more of an epilogue to Shrek's story from the first four movies that also serves as the first chapter in another character's story. This way the franchise can continue on without having to undo Shrek's happily ever after or completely regress his character.
I can't remember what I'm supposed to write to get you to do more of these...so do more, please. Anyway, yet more proof that second sequels never work.
As much as I enjoyed every Shrek movie, to me the third was worth the hype because at that time I was very much into Monty Python thanks to Spamalot on Broadway and was excited for Eric Idle’s part in Shrek 3 as Merlin for that particular connection!
Shrek 3 was very disappointing especially for Shrek fans, the fourth one still wasn't as good as the first two but definitely an improvement, Shrek 2 is admittedly my favorite film in the franchise.
