This movie was so good that I unironically think Jensen ackles is the voice of red hood despite only voicing him once. Man just gives Jason the weight and grit the character deserves
I was happy Jensen got the Batman va role for “Long Halloween”, as it is technically more prestigious (if a lackluster movie), but the whole movie I kept hearing Jason Todd. I wish they’d make an original animated movie with the Outlaws. I’d love to hear Jensen voicing Jason again!
If you want that line in comic form, go read Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Issue 100, second story in it. Trust me, it is a must read if you like this movie. It's a must read comic issue for any Robin fan.
I remember being 10 and seeing this at a Redbox and loving it I just started reading batman comics but before that I didn't know who Jason Todd was so this was a solid introduction and ever since he's been one of my favorites in the batfamily
Year ago comment I know but fun fact. In the comics it’s revealed Jason’s happiest memory ever was actually when before patrol as robin he fell ill and couldn’t go out and Bruce ended up staying in as well and watched a movie with him
You say that as if there hasn't been any video essays made on this movie before? I've already seen like 2 or 3 videos just talking about how great this movie is, it's what made me go find it "legally" to watch
What are you talking about? Everybody says this movie is a masterpiece what are you talking about you’ve been waiting for someone to talk about this movie it’s a masterpiece?
I always assumed in the comics that people knew Dick became Nightwing because of the Teen Titans. You see Robin running around with the Titans one day and then next you have Nightwing take his place as the leader of the Titans. Meanwhile Batman has a new Robin a few months later. Plus their style of combat. Dick is more acrobatic and incorporates more gymnastics whereas Jason is more street due to not having a acrobatic background. He got the basics from Batman but it's not something he was taught and practiced since he was a child.
Yeah, it makes sense when you actually think about it. People see Robin grow up in real time, then someone who looks similar, sounds the same, and fights the same shows up. It makes sense. Especially when another kid comes around who's visibly younger and not leading the Titans
Yeah I definitely think it would be a change a lot of major players would notice but I think the people who are not part of gangs or doing organized crimes really shouldn't know
I think Nightwing's inclusion was to show the opposing sides between Dick and Jason. Nightwing felt like the lighthearted Robin that gave Batman hope whereas Jason was his Despair after what happened to him. Also let's be honest Dick and Jason were treated the same to me because once Batman took the kid gloves off he wrecked Jason and that showed me he was never a threat to Batman in the first place
You really have to give DC some real credit.. they took a character that everybody hated.. I'm talkin hated so much that they wanted him dead Jason todd.. and turned him into one of the most well-liked popular characters the red Hood... That's talent and good story telling
Nah there were rumors of an auto-dialer being used to add fake votes in favor of his death. Dennis O'Niel (editor of batman when death in the family happened) said this. No confirmation but the fans were definitely split, if the numbers were real, it was really close anyway. Like a 12 vote difference.
@@Frogman1212 I'm not really talkin about the voting for him to die... More talkin aboutthe reason why they even considered killing him off which was poor sales cuz people didn't like Jason.. I can't push Either say that either but something had just sparked the idea for them to kill off the brand new Robin
@@dustincongello5802 The vote being that close proves they didn't hate him though. Besides, Dennis O'Niel has publicly stated that he doesn't like Robin, and he and Jim Starlin (writer of death in the family) both wanted batman to be a solo act. Dennis O'Niel was even the guy who in 1970 had Dick turn 18 and leave Bruce. There's really no evidence of fans hating Jason, especially if you read the letter's page in the back of those old comics, where they'd say positive things about him. If anything, it was probably an inside job by Denny and Jim Starlin, Denny probably using an autodialer to rig the vote in his favor, after all, he has said with no source that the autodialer was a floating rumor. Dennis O'Niel is a hippy so this kind of action wouldn't be beyond him. Salazar Knight has some great videos about him and Starlin, where he points out how out of character jason acts in Death in the family's first 3 issues, which would have made readers dislike him in the first place. Comic books from Marvel and DC are generally written 6 months in advance so this easily could have been planned by Starlin and O'Niel to keep sails from dropping while also killing a beloved character they didn't like.
@@Frogman1212 that's wild! Thank you for the inside perspective. Through internet osmosis I'm aware of the broader storyline of 'Death in the Family' and earlier Jason Todd stories, but i had no idea how O'Neil and Starlin wrote and felt about the character. Thank you for the context
The Nightwing Problem isn't just an issue here, it's been a continuous problem in most of his DC animated movie appearances. In son of Batman, despite subduing Damian he still clearly took more visible damage then is jobbed out by Damian later. In Batman vs Robin he's sidelined again like here. In Bad Blood he's the only one of the heroes who doesn't win his one-on-one fight in the climax (cause heaven forbid you let Dick go over Bruce, even when the latter is brainwashed and presumably fighting against it as he fight Nightwing, no keep that Batman Hogan booking going), In Batman and Haley Quinn he barely does anything, loses to Harley in a one-on-one fight and then nearly gets sexually assaulted, In JL vs TT he literally phones in his role, In Hush he gets infected by Scarecrow's fear gas and loses to Catwoman then is out of the movie (I think they gave him huntress's role in this scene in the comic, instead of given it to Batgirl who they gave Huntress's earlier scene to, so she shows up to do nothing too), and in Apokalips War he's killed like 80% of the cast but as a final indignity gets to be the one they throw int he Lazarus Pit to revive and he goes Crazy. I think Judas Contract is the only time he gets to looks good by being the only member of the team who was able to escape Deathstroke. But outside of that, real stellar run for the original Boy Wonder.
@@Bilaldane In terms of Physicality, DeathStroke is actually Stronger since he's essentially a Super Soldier. He could even run up to 50mph. I suppose the reason why Batman beats him from time to time is because he is better at Strategy.
This movie is the absolute pinnacle of the DC animated original film series and my personal favorite! In my opinion, it actually really improved on the source material. Top to bottom, just perfect!
17:32 It makes sense for Batman's bigger villains, they literally watched Dick Grayson grow up, yeah it was behind a mask, but Night Wings voice was Robins voice, NWs fight moves/style were Rs fighting moves/style. There wasn't that big of a gap between DGs Robin & Night Wing... I mean whatever the context if you saw & talked to a kid wearing a mask for about 5 min every few months for years on end, you would still recognize him if he one day switched his mask & style... It makes sense...
Additionally, it can be that Robin disappeared for a couple years and Nightwing showed up around that same time. Not that hard to make the guess that Nightwing is Robin. Then to add that Nightwing fights and acts the same way Robin did. Moreover, after those couple of years Robin suddenly shows up again. However, Robin is now acting different and fighting different. Plus, it’s been years since he disappeared and now that he’s back, he’s younger and not older. How is that possible? Vee is giving himself too much credit. Criminals ain’t that dumb. [+]
@@elplebeuchiha1996 Right, I didn't get into it before, but even the low level goons could know... They might not have interacted with Robin, but it's not crazy to think that rumors would spread around Gotham's underworld... One guy swears he heard Riddler say it when he was gooning for him, another overheard Cat Woman tell that to Poison Ivy the other day, & one just put 2 & 2 together. Edit: None of that is ever shown, but "criminal bars" are shown & 100% canon, if you view it with any level of realism info & rumors would be passed around there
RE: Everyone knowing Nightwing was Robin. I bet Deathstroke told everyone. There’s been a few “villains hang out together at seedy bars” conceits, like in Identity Crisis. Likely someone found out like that, especially if they paid him enough. Plus, Joker killed Robin, then Robin was still around, so I wouldn’t think it would be too hard to extrapolate that their ages stay somewhat the same, and perhaps Nightwing was the first Robin, and from there, rumors spread.
That was also what went through my head when Vee raised that point. I mean, in the film it was obviously done for exposition purposes, but as we've seen countless times, Batrogues henchmen talk with each others; just listen to their gossip in the Arkhamverse games ^^ Or the currently still going on *Batman:Reptilian* by Garth Ennis; (he's in my top 5 favorite comic book authors, so even if he isn't the best at writing Batman I'm still buying this title ^^ we're currently 4 issues in) *Point is* , no spoilers don't worry guyz but we do learn lots of stuff about the Gotham based supervillains' mooks and their habits. They're all pretty much acquainted, as many have worked for several crime bosses over the years, so when the big guys meet to discuss how to get rid of the Bats, they And then there have been quite a few villains who have learned stuff about Nightwing, from crooked cops to wannabe vigilantes, or former crooks like Harley Quinn who could have babbled about Jason Todd getting kille before reforming. (as Batman once said, it isn't hard to *guess* that he is Bruce Wayne; but he made it impossible to _prove_ it. From there, it might not have to be that hard to guess that his wards could be the successive Robins
And there are tells - anyone who's met Dick Grayson as both Robin and Nightwing should be able to figure out they're the same guy, even if they don't know his civilian identity.
I also assumed that the robin masks that they wear on their face dont obstruct their view and the white out is just a stylistic choice, correct me if im wrong but we dont see the white part when the mask are off
@@lowlyhollow far as I know the white out is pure artistic aesthetic. I suppose if anyone could come up with a cover in the mask/cowl that whites out the eyes for secret I’d protection but allows perfect vision for the wearer, it’s Bruce Wayne.
I feel like joker would certainly know his fighting a new kid in costume, and that as soon as he noticed one of those kids was wearing a different costume he would tell his henchman off hand. Which would spread to the rest of the crime community.
Well, a kid was Robin until he was 18, and then a masked vigilante that has no powers, uses some of Batman's moves, and that is really acrobatic - not hard to connect. Then the 18 yr old gets replaced with a 13 yr old. Then the new younger kid disappears for a year - and a calmer kid comes along /with pants on the uniform... And then a girl- I mean a kid with A SWORD appears. I mean... It's not hard? (Okay, but why did the grunts call Nightwing a pretty boy? I mean? They're not wrong but...) Neilwing deserved better ;-;
Death in the family wasnt that good let's be honest.... They turned the movie into what if stories and I wasn't a fan of it... Apokolips war was good too till they decided to get rid of the dcau with it
@@theloniouswolf6504 IMO the death in the family was a bunch of good what if stories and some of the stories even fleshed out Jason's character. Not to mention the scenes where Jason interacts with Joker are really good. I mean Joker identifying Jason as his "son" and Jason being in denial and later having a horrified expression after he realises he killed villains, made for a powerful scene.
The criminals know that batman has had four robins because: 1. They are all similar ages when they acted as robin. You mention this as a point against this but surely most people would be smart enough to figure out you cant be a teenager for 20 years. 2. They look similar BUT NOT THE SAME. Damien has darker skin. Tim has a red and black costume. 3. Criminals they've met on the street recognising them. Riddler, for example would fairly easily figure out that Batman has swaped robins a few times. It's not to hard to assume he would tell others, who would then tell others, until it's common news.
For me the best animated Batman films go in this order: Mask of the Phantasm Return of the Joker Under the Red Hood For me Phantasm is basically a live action film in animated form if that makes any sense. The story and performances just elevate it to a point where it can sit comfortably even against "The Dark Knight".
So the dark knight return being a part 1and 2 doesn't fit?????I agree with the list but Id put Under the red hood Dark knight returns then mask of the phantasm but then motp could've went anywhere on the list
@@theloniouswolf6504 Dark Knight Returns is a little too edgelord for me. It's a well put together film and the Joker Carnival sequence is hauntingly creepy but I't a little too shock and awe for my tastes. That being said if you like it then that's great.
idk why but Neil Patrick Harris voicing nightwing feels perfect to me. He definitely has good delivery. It feels like he uses the best parts of nightwing, and I wouldn’t be mad to see him used more.
This and the Flashpoint Paradox are my two favorite DC films. DiMaggio’s Joker is definitely underrated, probably my favorite right after Hamill. I wasn’t as familiar with the Red Hood story so I wasn’t sure how well it was done (I was very familiar with Death in the Family and felt the changes to the story were understandable…even if we were denied Ambassador Joker), especially after how atrocious The Long Halloween was (I am VERY familiar with that book and every single change did not service it, I hate that film). If there’s one flaw I have with this adaptation…they didn’t have Superboy Prime punching reality until Jason Todd came back. 🤪
I also love this and flashpoints film, but you don't like the long halloween? I thought it was great. Also, superboy prime punching reality so hard that jason todd came back to life while he was weakened will never not be funny to me. "So, how did you come back?" "Teen superman got so mad he punched reality just to rage at superman's clone, and I came back."
Nah he sounds too old in YJ. Like flat and gravely. He sounds like if Bruce in DKR had no energy and sat on the couch for the whole story. Same with the Gaslight movie. I think this movie was his best stint as the character. He is really old now by the way.
This movie is nothing short of a Masterpiece, being adapted from three iconic stories in the Batman Mythos and pulling it of well to it's art and animation on top a well done performance from the voice cast, Under the Red Hood is up there as one of the Best Batman Films.
I had no clue that Bender would be one of if not my favorite Joker voice until I watched this movie. I saw this movie when I was really young and loved it, it's so classic, probably one of my favorite things to come from the Batman character.
@@markmagician2471 Bruce Greenwood is underrated. Kevin Conroy is definitely the best voice actor for Batman but if he decides to stop voicing Batman, I would love for Bruce Greenwood to continue the role.
Both are very similar, and a lot less argumentative than people would have you believe. Today his robin tenure is always spoken about like he was a disrespectful bitch, and that's far from the truth
The reason why they know the robins change is time passing obviously. As for how they know which is which, like Nightwing being the first, I would guess it's the fighting style?????
That last bit of dialogue Batman has with Jason is haunting in so many ways. He finally just gets it out as to why he doesn't kill people, why not even Joker. Despite him being the dark night, the symbol of fear for all criminals. He's afraid, not because it's hard. If anything, he wishes that was the case opposed to reality. Bruce Green is my second favorite batman voice. Though yeah, I would kill to hear Konroy say those lines too lol. Sidenote: I think the idea is at least for now, Bruce really doesn't want a partner or sidekick. Dick is sidelined because of Bruce's own guilt and really doesn't want him around. Yes he's competent, but Bruce doesn't let show and that's his flaw. Only by the end of Dicks time does Bruce tell him thank you.
One of my favorite Batman movies out there. This movie definitely made me become a Jason Todd fan. I never knew much about Jason, wasn’t much into reading comics at the time and only knew Dick and Tim through cartoons. I learn of Jason here and there when I got access to explore the internet but more as cliffnotes. This movie made me care for the character, got me interested in reading comics with him, especially with Redhood and The Outlaws and having moments with Jason interacting with Dick, Damian, and Barbara (minus being love interests, don’t know where I am on that).; this made me love Jason Todd as my favorite former sidekick and beating Dick’s place in my Bat Family. Also I wanna touch on Joker in this movie. He’s definitely one of my favorite incarnations, definitely behind the Animated Series Joker of my top favorite Jokers. Everyone else was above good. Not as good as some other animated versions, but surpassing a couple. Especially Batman, I liked more when his emotions slips up, interactions with Jason from being proud with him to clashing on their views on taking down criminals and Batman explaining why he didn’t kill The Joker onscreen. Nightwing was okay, wish we got more out of him, at least a fun fight scene of the two punching each other.
I understand your disdain for how Nightwing is treated in this movie. You aren't wrong but I think you misunderstood why it is this way. They wanted Nightwing to thematically show how a good Robin can elevate himself into something greater while a bad Robin turns himself into Red Hood. But then they ran into the problem of Nightwing naturally helping Batman in the Red Hood fight so they broke his leg to get him out of the story. He would only take away from the fight at the end or just he home for no reason. It does suck how he's treated but it was necessary for them to make their point. Great video though. Please do talk more ab Jason Todd.
I think the reason Todd had a mask underneath his mask was to play with Batman's emotions. He wanted Bruce to see him as he remembered him, hopefully to make his argument more effective.
Neilwing deserved better :( This is my favourite animated batman movie of all time and Jason todd is my favourite DC character of all time and I'm happy you've finally covered it I'd also like to know your opinion on his portrayal in titans seasons 1-3? Personally I like the new take on the character but that's probably just personal preference
I love this video but it should be easy to figure out the first robin became nightwing. Especially with Batman’s villains because they should be familiar on his attitude and style. All the robins had different personalities
when I was a little kid I always was a robin fan, then my uncle gave me, I think it was, this movie to watch and I got traumatised... After the shock Jason became my favourite character yeaey ✨✨
Under the Redhood was great, I think that DC really has a staple on making dark superhero movies, as opposed to Marvel that kind of goes the family-friendly mostly lighthearted route
Honestly I prefer more light heatred Superhero films that can still gave serious moments but never forgets to have fun. Too many DC stories are obsessed with being Dark and miserable
I gotta disagree with you on the faithfulness argument. It’s entirely different from the comics. In A Death in the Family comic, instead of Ras al Ghul using Joker to destabilize the European economy, Joker’s selling a missle launcher to get money. And Jason is trying to find his mother. Of course, Ra’s is used in this movie to show us the Lazarus Pit that revives Jason, so it’s fine.
The mask under the mask might be an emergency mask, in case the main one needs to be discarded. Or, to provide a red shade under the eye holes of the main mask, for style points.
Don't forget to check out the Sequel film to this "Batman: A Death In The Family", which actually is an interactive film that gives some greater detail of this story. And it also includes a few cool one-off short films like how this movie had Jonah Hex.
I always thought they knew he was the first robin because he's already starting as nightwing by the time Jason comes around. Plus he'd be in the public eye with the titans. And then all the criminals notice that Robin suddenly got way younger.
I think the fact that Dick Grayson as Nightwing, is no longer a kid and looks similar enough with the mask on, possible similar fighting styles etc, some of Batman’s more frequent foes, such as The Joker, could figure out the new guy fighting with Batman is the former Robin all growed up. And word gets out from there that the once Robin is now Nightwing.
This movie was my introduction to Nightwing. And I instantly became hooked. Idk what it was about his design and charm that made me go. That’s it. That’s the guy. That’s my favorite super hero. And ever since then I’m always left wanting more. I’ve seen pretty much every piece of media he’s been in now and I still just want more. I just need something that’s a full movie that lets him shine. The Dacmu sure as hell didn’t do it. Young justice while having a amazingly good portrayal rarely has him as a the main character of any of the stories. The animated series did good to but I hate the mullet. Titans is a mixed bag. Something I really like. Some I don’t. I still haven’t watched season 3 of that so we will see. Idk maybe someday we will get something done right for him
I really like Batman's speach in this movie about how it's not too hard to kill people like the Joker. It's too easy. If he takes that step he won't be able to go back. That's a really cool concept
One thing about this film i love is how amazing the fights scenes are. IMO, these are the best fight scenes in any Batman film. Simply because of how skilled Bruce and Jason are. But also What I’ve noticed about the fights as that as well as both of them being skilled, Bruce and Jason’s characters completely match their fighting styles. Jason fights like someone who is aggressive, unpredictable, cocky, dangerous and a lust for vengeance. Bruce is more refined, patient, experienced and mature. Though Bruce has is aggressive moments (when he needs to be). In a way Jason is what Bruce could’ve become had he fallen into the abyss and only followed his anger. What separates them is Batmans moral code, and that’s why he is completely ahead of his opponents and Jason. And especially when it gets to a point where Bruce has to take him down and completely outclasses Jason and saying ”you say you wanna be better than me! but it won’t happen! NOT LIKE THIS!” It’s just so awesome seeing Batman with so much experience and thinking steps ahead every time. While also seeing his understanding on a different level.
Great video. This movie is one of my favorites. Totally agree about Nightwing. Nightwing was robbed and because of it so were we... But the movie still slaps.
I mean it makes sense the public wouldn't think the Robins were the same person, they were around so long they would age out of being a child at some point.
Pretty sure the extra domino mask under the Red Hood helmet is due to the fact that Joker is present in the end scene, and that would cause people to complain that everybody's identities would be compromised.
There's just something so funny about Neil Patrick Harris playing a sidekick who gets thrown to the side and abandoned for half the movie. Like it's definitely a hole in the story, but it almost adds to it because I just picture live action Niel Patrick Harris playing the character and him cracking jokes over the lack of screen time.
I don't think the Nightwing subplot was to show Batman's poor mentoring or anything like that. I think it was to show both how Jason could have turned out as a person (altruistic and caring) and to display how much Jason's death affected Bruce. His willingness to work with Dick had become really small because of his trauma due to his failure to protect Jason.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE. I love when you said this is one of the best Batman movies ever, love action and animation. I try to tell people that all the time.
i feel like joker would brag about killing the second robin. as for everyone knowing nightwing was the first robin. I feel like a younger batman like character with his own version of the bat symbol showing up right as batman stops showing up with robin they could put together he used to be robin. and then when jason shows up okay this is robin 2. I feel like the goons and henchmen in gothem deal with batman not as personally as freeze or the riddler enough to know some truths but never enough to see the full picture so there is mythos to batman that is only known to the villain underground some of its right alot of dramatized and mythical versions of the truth. thats just my head cannon anyways rather than the writers just needing to give exposition to the new comic book fans watching so they dont have to turn to us every five seconds and ask whose that guy, even tho theres always that one guy who will do it anyways
I feel like Joker couldn't get the credit because after a few months of robin being around you'd have tons of villains, costumed rogues and two-bit hoods alike, making up these fisherman stories about how they totally killed robin, and he's since been replaced. Like criminals all over gotham would constantly make up fake stories about killing batman's partners. "Blonde Batgirl? Oh yeah me and Smitty totally iced the redhead. Oh yeah like 6 years ago. Didn't I mention that?"
Under the Red hood is my favorite batman movie I love how Raw and gritty it is I understand how both Bruce and Jason feels about the joker plus it goes in depth into why Batman won't pull the trigger on Joker its fantastic
I didn't feel like Nightwing was useless in this. He was competent in his fight scenes, even if he did get injured, and he was there to show how aloof Bruce became after Jason died. I also feel like him being very chatty and lighthearted was intentional, he was trying to bring out his old dynamic with Bruce and comfrot him in his own way. It's actually kinda sweet of Dick.
Great video. Imo this is a masterclass on adapting source material into another media. Judd Winick wrote both comic and animation and it shows. He understands what matters in the story and used the possibility of world building in a self contained story to create a continuity that is faithful and different in all the right places. Under The Red Hood is not even mentioned as top 5 Batman story (I believe it isnt, I think it could be top 10 at least), but the fact that it was so well made that people talk about more than Year One and The Dark Knight Returns (also faithful adaptations of top 1 and 2 comic arcs for 90% of Batman's fanbase) shows just how much care was put into it. Now I would like to add to the Dick Grayson discussion if I may: I understand the complaint about Nightwing but the thing is, he was actually a cameo for the early half of the arc. If I recall correctly the only extra scene Dick was in envolved the Mister Freeze and the Kryptonite crest heist. This is has more to do with the way stories are told in comics (decompressed storytelling) and how you adapt it into animation (you have to tie everything together in a more condensed fashion) than a creatively bad decision imo. Plus, Bruce sidelining Dick imo is less about him being irresponsible and more about him shielding Dick. Bruce is patronizing as hell even with his grown up partners. Always has been. So I wasnt particularly bothered by the points you brought up, but I understand them.
The other problem I've found with the movie might be the fact that two of the characters (Red Hood and Nightwing) are played by pretty famous actors which is kinda...weird, in a way (maybe this is a problem throughout the whole voice acting industry...I don't know...). Because sometimes, at certain points during the movie, I can hear their other roles when I hear them talk. Like I can hear bits of Barney from How I Met Your Mother in Neil's performance as Nightwing and knowing now that The Red Hood is played by the same guy who was Dean Winchester, I can totally hear Dean in Jensen's performance as The Red Hood (maybe that's because in both performances, Jensen used his normal voice. He never needed or had to put on a cartoonish voice because both roles aren't cartoonish characters). So, again, that's one of my gripes with the movie. Other than that, it's a good movie overall. Also, seeing Jason Todd as Robin at the very end of the movie being so excited to fight crime was cute, sad and bittersweet. 🥺
Bruce Greenwood is the best voice for Batman in my opinion. He IS Batman to me. Not this version specifically but in Young Justice mostly. But this version kinda too.
How does everyone know Nightwing is the first Robin and there is a new one? Because as time passes and people see robin age and grow, then suddenly there is a new hero who does the same things as Robin and at the same time a younger new Robin shows up.... it's obvious in the criminal world, word travels fast... That's also part of how Tim Drake figured it out.
Thank you bro I’m glad I’m not the only one that is bothered by the fact that everybody knows Robin becomes Nightwing and that there is more than one Robin
It would be obvious if you're a villain over 35 years old. You see batman's partner age, join the titans, than this nightwing guy is in his place. And robin is a little boy again. It's really obvious.
I know The Dark Knight tackled this quote/theme, but Under The Red Hood is the pure definition of: “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
The thing is, nobody can scale up to Dick, no one. I mean, MF led the Teen Titans, dates a goddamn alien princess, is considered by many as Batmans greatest success and is overall a fucking badass. Oh, did I mention that he's banging a hot alien princess? No, seriously, It was honestly such a good take to make Jason not another Dick, but instead making him the complete opposite. All in all, I highly recommend this movie
This movie was so good that I unironically think Jensen ackles is the voice of red hood despite only voicing him once. Man just gives Jason the weight and grit the character deserves
Jensen is honestly so iconic, like you said he’s only voices him once, it’s perfect.
Imagine if Jensen did a whole series or another movie. That would be awesome!
Like he's Kevin Conroy Batman or Mark Hamill Joker. Its the same for me too. Jensen Ackles is the voice of Red Hood. The only true voice.
He even cosplayed as both red hood and batman and is playing the superhero soldier boy in the upcoming season 3 of the boys.
Jason’s line to Batman at the end “The friends he’s crippled”, another reference to the Killing Joke.
Well in the interactive movie barbara makes a cameo
My first animated Batman movie I grew up watching. The feels still hit by the ending of young Jason saying “This is the best day of my life!”.
Same every time it plays I tear up a bit
If you want that line in comic form, go read Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Issue 100, second story in it. Trust me, it is a must read if you like this movie. It's a must read comic issue for any Robin fan.
Me too, man. . . me too.
I remember being 10 and seeing this at a Redbox and loving it I just started reading batman comics but before that I didn't know who Jason Todd was so this was a solid introduction and ever since he's been one of my favorites in the batfamily

If I recall, Robin becomes Nightwing in the comics atleast because his identity is exposed by Deathstroke the terminator
Yeah, it makes sense when you actually think about it. People see Robin grow up in real time, then someone who looks similar, sounds the same, and fights the same shows up. It makes sense. Especially when another kid comes around who's visibly younger and not leading the Titans
It was a public change and for the criminals that grew up with the kid kicking them in the face they likely recognize his voice too
Yeah I definitely think it would be a change a lot of major players would notice but I think the people who are not part of gangs or doing organized crimes really shouldn't know
@@seand7042 nah, it was because his legs were getting cold.
Loving parents vs Nurture
dick was the light to batman's darkness, while jason was the thing that brought him deeper into the shadows, and tim pulled him back.
@@bradleymay5350 no problem. Yeah it's pretty crazy. If it wasn't an inside job they definitely still manipulated things to get there.
But outside of that, real stellar run for the original Boy Wonder.
get everything except the Batman part cuz well yh he can't beat him plus Deathstroke is as strong as batman so that makes sense too
Injustice Nightwing died due to a Pebble
@@Bilaldane
In terms of Physicality, DeathStroke is actually Stronger since he's essentially a Super Soldier. He could even run up to 50mph.
I suppose the reason why Batman beats him from time to time is because he is better at Strategy.
@@baligong3592 a large pebble, also known as a rock.
At least he’s got Young Justice
Couldn't agree more. Under the Red Hood is a blast to watch for basically every reason you listed.
Edit: None of that is ever shown, but "criminal bars" are shown & 100% canon, if you view it with any level of realism info & rumors would be passed around there
I just wish it had a fight between Nightwing and Red Hood.
I thought that Nightwing’s inclusion was to show how a post-DITF Family treats his original sidekick.
I mean, in the film it was obviously done for exposition purposes, but as we've seen countless times, Batrogues henchmen talk with each others;
just listen to their gossip in the Arkhamverse games ^^
Or the currently still going on *Batman:Reptilian* by Garth Ennis; (he's in my top 5 favorite comic book authors, so even if he isn't the best at writing Batman I'm still buying this title ^^ we're currently 4 issues in)
*Point is* , no spoilers don't worry guyz but we do learn lots of stuff about the Gotham based supervillains' mooks and their habits.
They're all pretty much acquainted, as many have worked for several crime bosses over the years, so when the big guys meet to discuss how to get rid of the Bats, they
And then there have been quite a few villains who have learned stuff about Nightwing, from crooked cops to wannabe vigilantes, or former crooks like Harley Quinn who could have babbled about Jason Todd getting kille before reforming.
I liked the Nightwing from "The Batman" animated show episode. He was dope
True plus one has a different fighting style and voice to the other as well.
You battle them that many times you know their gimmicks
And the fact children age
@@kieranwatts8037 Exactly a masochist like the joker probably knows someone just from how it feels to be punched by them.
I think the voice would give it away. If you had a few interactions with them, you would be able to tell the difference.
Well, a kid was Robin until he was 18, and then a masked vigilante that has no powers, uses some of Batman's moves, and that is really acrobatic - not hard to connect.
Then the 18 yr old gets replaced with a 13 yr old. Then the new younger kid disappears for a year - and a calmer kid comes along /with pants on the uniform... And then a girl- I mean a kid with A SWORD appears.
I mean... It's not hard?
(Okay, but why did the grunts call Nightwing a pretty boy? I mean? They're not wrong but...)
Neilwing deserved better ;-;
The DC Animated movie era when they ACTUALLY GAVE A DAMN about their adaptations.
Apokilips war and death in the family: are we a joke to you?
@@wisconsinking323 death in the fam and this are the same movie and YES. They are jokes to me. DC been putting these out way before.
Injustice Animated Movie: i like to introduce myself
Neilwing deserved better, maybe even his own movie . Get on it DC
Fax every robin had there own animated movie except the best one
The criminals know that batman has had four robins because:
Reminds me of the Teen Titan Go joke about having a whole team of Robins.
For me the best animated Batman films go in this order:
Mask of the Phantasm
Return of the Joker
Under the Red Hood
For me Phantasm is basically a live action film in animated form if that makes any sense. The story and performances just elevate it to a point where it can sit comfortably even against "The Dark Knight".
So the dark knight return being a part 1and 2 doesn't fit?????I agree with the list but Id put
Under the red hood
Dark knight returns then mask of the phantasm but then motp could've went anywhere on the list
"So, how did you come back?"
"Teen superman got so mad he punched reality just to rage at superman's clone, and I came back."
As good as Bruce Greenwood is here, his voice is perfect in Young Justice. 2nd only behind Conroy
Nah he sounds too old in YJ. Like flat and gravely. He sounds like if Bruce in DKR had no energy and sat on the couch for the whole story. Same with the Gaslight movie. I think this movie was his best stint as the character. He is really old now by the way.
In my opinion there has not been a better on screen version of Red Hood than this one
I think as far as Batman voices goes, in no order: This guy, Conroy, and the one from Crisis on Two Earth's.
Bruce Greenwood besides this movie he was the VA for Young Justice show
@@markmagician2471 Bruce Greenwood is underrated. Kevin Conroy is definitely the best voice actor for Batman but if he decides to stop voicing Batman, I would love for Bruce Greenwood to continue the role.
I also really like Jason O'Mara as well. He's underrated.
Discussion of the two different Jason Todd's, pre and post crisis is necessary.
Hell yeah
Both are very similar, and a lot less argumentative than people would have you believe. Today his robin tenure is always spoken about like he was a disrespectful bitch, and that's far from the truth
The reason why they know the robins change is time passing obviously. As for how they know which is which, like Nightwing being the first, I would guess it's the fighting style?????
His intro makes me laugh because he's actually my favorite TH-camr
I can't believe I almost cried while watching this movie.
Lmao the fact he had a mask on underneath the helmet 😂😂
It was nice hearing Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing, even if he wasn't in the whole movie.
Bruce Greenwood is underrated as Batman.
Yes but I don’t know if Joe DiMaggio was a good choice for the Joker. I think Mark Hamill would have been better.
To be honest he was pretty old when he did it here, and every other time he's done it, you can tell he's too old. They got him like 10 years too late.
This adaptation is great but I would like an animated version of the orginal story from back the artwork from back then was great
I think the reason Todd had a mask underneath his mask was to play with Batman's emotions. He wanted Bruce to see him as he remembered him, hopefully to make his argument more effective.
"HOLY EARLY NOTIFICATION, BATMAN!"

Personally I like the new take on the character but that's probably just personal preference
I saw this movie when it came out, and it extremely legendary
Love this movie. One of the greatest batman movie ever
I love this video but it should be easy to figure out the first robin became nightwing. Especially with Batman’s villains because they should be familiar on his attitude and style. All the robins had different personalities
This is one of my favorite Batman movies. This is the best version of the Red Hood story. Better than the arkham games and even the comics.
when I was a little kid I always was a robin fan, then my uncle gave me, I think it was, this movie to watch and I got traumatised...
Daredevil has entered the chat
Nice inclusion of the footage from the animated movie Batman death in the family I'm curious to see what your thoughts are on that one.
ALL the movies do Nightwing dirty, AND IT PISSES ME OFF. Even Bad Blood screwed him over.
DC hates Dick and I don't know why. They hate all legacy characters.
@@zemox2534 What other legacy characters do they hate?

I gotta disagree with you on the faithfulness argument. It’s entirely different from the comics. In A Death in the Family comic, instead of Ras al Ghul using Joker to destabilize the European economy, Joker’s selling a missle launcher to get money. And Jason is trying to find his mother. Of course, Ra’s is used in this movie to show us the Lazarus Pit that revives Jason, so it’s fine.
Awesome video Vee, would love to see you cover comics on the future, keep up the amazing work
The mask under the mask might be an emergency mask, in case the main one needs to be discarded.
The ending with the flashback “this is the best day of my life”. Always gets me
OMG The Tobi scene from Naruto killed me LMAO.
The fact Phineas, Dean Winchester, and Jake the dogs/bender voices are in here is also amazing!
This is actually my favorite Batman movie in general it will probably be my second favorite when the Batman come out but still I love it.
Jason Todd was my favorite Robin one reason because he's the 1st one to defy the GODDAMN BATMAN
This is my favorite Batman movie and my favorite Batman sidekick
NOT LIKE THIS!”
It’s just so awesome seeing Batman with so much experience and thinking steps ahead every time. While also seeing his understanding on a different level.
Great video. This movie is one of my favorites. Totally agree about Nightwing. Nightwing was robbed and because of it so were we... But the movie still slaps.
I absolutely love Conroy’s “I still got it” smirk 😏 at the end there 😂🤣
I love the flashback sequences, heart breaking as some were...
I mean it makes sense the public wouldn't think the Robins were the same person, they were around so long they would age out of being a child at some point.
lowkey great video man and i was waiting for you to get to this one!
I mean, Joker would know that Robin Changed. He'd recognize Nightwing's voice, fighting style, etc.
You should watch the Death in the Family interactive movie
Which also ties in (sorta) to killing Joke
This and Flashpoint Paradox are easily my favorite of the DC animated movies. *chef's kiss*
10/10 movie and this video was very well done.
Batman didn’t want Nightwing to end up like Red Hood.
I don't think Jason's mind is warped, he just wants to kill the joker and for Batman to agree with him, which is more sane than not killing joker.
I have sent that end monologue with Batman so many times
I FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE.
I love when you said this is one of the best Batman movies ever, love action and animation. I try to tell people that all the time.
An 'Under the Red Hood' review? Nice.
Ah, and here we have the movie that created all the legions of Red Hood fans!
i feel like joker would brag about killing the second robin. as for everyone knowing nightwing was the first robin.
Now I would like to add to the Dick Grayson discussion if I may:
I understand the complaint about Nightwing but the thing is, he was actually a cameo for the early half of the arc.
I’d love to hear you talk about Mask Of The Phantasm
The best Batman movie of both live action and animated.
Bruce Greenwood is the best voice for Batman in my opinion. He IS Batman to me. Not this version specifically but in Young Justice mostly. But this version kinda too.
Lemme clarify Cornoy is the best but Greenwood is my favorite. Ever. Unlike Conroy be actually feels like batman
@@Frogman1212 not really, i mean maybe if you’re the joker but a common thug no way. Like bruh they not too bright.
i remember watching this when i was like 6, ive seen this movie upwards of 20 times, love it more and more everytime
I know The Dark Knight tackled this quote/theme, but Under The Red Hood is the pure definition of:
“You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
Except Jason was completely right.
