But out of all these movies, I think one stands above the rest.... that movie being Batman Returns.

Despite they prefers Batman Returns, I'd say Batman (1989) were much better than Batman Returns in my opinion. Danny Elfman scores, the Batsuit, Jack Nicholson and his Joker, the Batmobile chase, the fight at backalley, Batwing goes up to the moonlight, everything was a masterpiece lol. It's impossible to not love Batman (1989). It was a masterpiece movie directed by Tim Burton himself. In fact, Batman (1989) was my first childhood superhero movie I've ever watched in the 90s that I admired and inspired a lot to this very day.

That is because Tim Burton literally puts the Goth in Gotham City. All of Tim Burtons films are Gothic and his style is replicated more than anyone's simply because Tim Burton was born to make Batman. It is just a damn shame white moms during that time complained about the film being too dark cause I honestly think it would of gotten better. Only reason Tim didn't continue doing the films. Looking back, I've decided that the biggest story blunder Burton committed with BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS was never explaining why, of all things, Bruce Wayne chose to dress up as a bat. Yes, BATMAN FOREVER answers this question, but by that point it was a little too late. All we get is a shot in the first film of Bruce sleeping while hanging upside-down from a chin-up bar. So, what then? Does he LITERALLY believe he's a bat sometimes?
This is a great weakness because the lack of an explanation keeps Batman from coming off as a truly relatable hero and turns him into just another one of Gotham's cosplay freaks. And in fact, in that way he appears to be just as absurd to me as the Red Triangle Circus Gang (though I'm a HUGE fan of them both!). Yes, those people really were circus performers before the Penguin corrupted them. But it's not as if they were professional wrestlers who had to keep "kayfabe"; at some point, you'd think they'd have taken those costumes off (especially since they'd REALLY smell after all that time!). So what statement were those crooks intending to make by remaining in character? And, more to the point, what is Bruce Wayne's deeper connection to bats?

Manbat style creatures are old horror stories and the bat is often associated with vampires. It's meant to intimidate and give him a mythic Boogeyman status and it does work. Even the cops treat him like he's just an urban legend until they all see him. That all came cross without being directly told in Batman. Not character traits 😂 after Batman Returns though the penguin was turned a little more towards the version in the movie. In the TAS he had the same type of hands as in the film. The characters origins though are changed a little for the film but the characters and personalities are pretty consistent with the comics. Just penguin for some reason was given a gang suited more to joker than himself. Other than that though the story and characters are pretty on point. Especially the themes of duality with Batman and Catwoman even being consistent with their comic counterparts today. But he is very smart, well spoken, and a crime boss. In BR, he’s born a foul, gross, slobbering monster, that eats cats, and raw fish. And as for Catwoman, she’s never struggled with the notions of being Catwoman or being a normal citizen. She’s always loved what she does, being a burgler, and even when she’s doing good, she loves the thrill of it. There are no questions of duality with her. On occasion Bruce will have a crisis, and wonder if he should stay Batman, but that’s about it. And as for story non of the things in this movie ever happen in the comics, our side of a character named Batman, another named Catwoman, and another named Penguin. That’s all the movie and the books have in common.

Batman Returns is my favourite Batman movie. I just love the atmosphere, the gothic look or setting, the villains and the awesome soundtrack by Danny Elfman. People say oh it's not Batman movie this time, it's more of Tim Burton movie, good. McDonalds getting pissed because they can't sell their happy meal toys, good. He's taking risks and making it dark. It gets a lot of hate which I'm confused. All three characters worked so well. Danny Elfman had to create themes for Catwoman & Penguin. They're memorable. It's easily one of his best scores, highly recommend especially the Birth of the Penguin and his death which is still one of the saddest endings to a villain. It gets me every time. Well maybe the penguins moving his body is a bit silly but it works. It's not easy making the audience feel sad to a villain's death which is something fans didn't expect or want to see. Burton took risks, I'm so glad he did. I cant believe Danny DeVito got a Razzie nomination. You guys are the same idiots who nominated Kubrick & Brian De Palma for worst directors. Including Ennio Morricone's score of the Thing.
The costumes are great even the Bat suit improved. The origins for our villains are told well, both of them are memorable and yet again, the soundtrack makes them even better. Catwoman's origin might be a creepy to some, her first attack with El Scorpio from Predator 2 might be shocking to some especially kids. She's full of surprises.
It was fun seeing Christopher Walken, I can't believe his son is Leatherface or Zangief from Street Fighter. Lucky dad. Then again, Penguin's dad is none other than Pee-wee Herman.
Batman's introduction is sweet and badass. So many memorable shots & scenes. Burton really took it as far as he could.
Although there are some silly moments like the villains getting the blueprint of the batmobile, its still a dark film, so you kinda get a comic book film mixed with Burton's dark side. Overall, a fantastic underrated sequel that went to a new direction and managed to make the comic book characters a bit more interesting like the Penguin. Unfortunately, this is where the darkness stops, too bad, even as a kid, I loved it and still do. Sometimes I wish he continued with the sequels, Burton's version of these characters are unique and they stand out. You might love Nicholson's Joker more, just don't forget the Penguin & Catwoman.
Funny, as a kid I thought the baby was Batman, when the title showed up with all the bats, it looked like the baby was going to the bat cave. Its weird that both Batman films have great quotes with the word Honey in it. One coming from Joker and the other from Catwoman. And who could forget those cute little penguins with their rockets. Aww they're going to kill the children. Plus the Circus gang looks like Joker's henchmen. I almost forgot the silly pictures of Christopher Walken with Arnold, Elvis etc. Classic. And yes, he does say unlimited poontang. Always take risks, forget about what McDonalds think, pussies. Michael Keaton should have done something since he was the Founder. As Orson Welles once said to Ed Wood, "visions are worth fighting for".

The Dark Knight is a great “Joker” movie, even more so than Joker, which was good, but Heath still nailed it better.
Batman Returns is a great Batman movie and showed was a Batman movie should be like. Corruption, crazy scary villains, a Bruce Wayne always at wits ends with wanting to be normal, but can’t, much like how Vee points out the conflict in Selena Kyle and even how they say it in the film “were the same, split down the middle”
Funny how it’s one of the most “true to a Batman style” films but it always gets overlooked and called “too dark” but it’s perhaps the best adaptation of the Batman comics done on film, aside from The Animated Series, which had more material to work with to make as a series than a standalone film.

This movie made the comic Penguin into a much better character. And I think we all know how amazing Michelle phieffer was as Catwoman. And I find her far more interesting here than the comic version. I mean I like Anne Hathaway's version which is true to the comics but I just like Anne hathaway, the character itself isn't as great. I like The Long Halloween movie version idk Batman Returns is the most interesting version to me.

I'm pleased to say that he came close in the scene that shows him and Batman confronting each other just before Catwoman shows up. You can see that he's trying to come off as a well-spoken politician there, even if it is a phony act. He even pretends to be a good guy in the shooting script: "We'll be working hand in glove in Gotham's glorious future." I just wish that scene had not been pared down so much in the final film.
And ironically, in that scene I think Tim Burton missed the chance to do something truly Burtonian. BATMAN RETURNS is "Gothic" in terms of its thematic content as well as its décor, with literary allusions to Milton, Coleridge, Mary Shelley (what with all the FRANKENSTEIN imagery), etc. But what about William Blake, an often overlooked "children's poet" who, in his masterwork "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell," proved himself to be TRULY Gothic? The Penguin is supposed to be an eloquent bookworm and (in this film, at least) very much a "satanic hero." So I can easily imagine even the DeVito version of him retorting to Batman's "You're not mayor" with " 'What is now proved was once only imagined.' - William Blake." And then, when he said "You don't really think you'll win, do you?", Batman could fire back with " 'Everything flows.' - Heraclitus." Granted, that would sound more than a little awkward coming from Michael Keaton's mouth, and Burton's not known for being a connoisseur of either English literature or Greek philosophy. But I find that a lot more interesting than both of them saying "Things change." And it would not only suit both the character of the Penguin AND Burton's Gothic affectations (well, at least in the case of Blake), but demonstrate that the Penguin and Batman were intellectual equals.

In my opinion, what was attempted with the tragedy, vengeance, and romance of Selina in Returns was executed better with Andrea in Mask of The Phantasm...
Like Returns was the Blueprint that walked so that Phantasm could run. I just felt more closure and somber satisfaction with Andrea no longer being able to see Bruce again because she was consumed by her darkness that Bruce couldn't save her from and the scene when Bruce discovers the locket in the Batcave and silently weeps to himself because he knows that she is gone forever, he wiould no longer know her warmth or her wit. He accepts and the Dark Knight launches himself into action, and continues his crusade against crime if but for one more night. Whereas Returns gave me more questions than answers.

Andrea and Selina feel very similar. I might even have analysed to see if Andrea was inspired by Selina, as I've seen inspiration for films from other films before - *SPOILER ALERT FOR TIM BURTON'S PRIOR FILM, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS* - For instance, the Penguin is evil Edward Scissorhands, having the same rise and fall from grace arc, and being revealed to and then retreating to their private lair story that Edward has. However, this is already a clear impossibility, as Mask of the Phantasm came out just a year after Batman Returns.

The masses have been blinded by the current comic book movie climate for some time now, but they're starting to open their eyes again, in search for something other than cookie-cutter. Upon rewatching Tim Burton’s Batman films, I found that instead of being a crime epic or a C student football player’s cgi interpretation of a the next big super hero movie, Burton approaches Batman through lens of fantasy and arthouse. They don’t constantly hit you over the head with dialog explaining plot details or character motivations at every moment, they’re not huge cartoon set pieces trying to come off as a live action spectacle. Instead of telling his stories through dialog and cgi clusterfuckery, Burton does so through stunning visuals and subtlety.
The dark knight is probably the better film in terms of accessibility, but if you’re judging the Batman films on pure art, I’d say Burton’s films are the better of the lot.
