Another weird trait I've found over the years, is that some of my abronias (not all) refuse to use their claws when handled i.e on my hand/arm. It's very strange because its almost as if they know they can scratch you and so you see their front and hind gingerly walk and put no tension on their finger like appendages.

Adam. To help with your puppy to quit peeing whenever you get home. This is an easy thing to do. Go to whatever outside door you are teaching her to go outside to do her business. Never make eye contact and call her outside. Once she is outside, then make eye contact. I'm pretty sure you and everyone else might know this. Never get angry for a dog peeing g when you look at them. This is their way of showing you are the leader of the pack.

The idea of a small reptile wanting to get onto a very large, warm giant that's likely to protect them from predators and also regularly provides them with food and enrichment is def something worth considering. While it may be debatable whether they have "affection" varying from one species to the next, it's def undeniable that they do have *trust.* And that's enough for me :)

    • @alicecain4851

Put the words "small child" in the place of "small reptile" and tell me what the difference is.
They seek the same thing and gain trust - which is a LOT!
I'm in the group of people who think their bearded dragons love them - probably because we love them so much.
Loved your comment - and yes, I have children and still think it's parallel.

@@alicecain4851 the difference is massive. Even if some reptiles do enjoy their keepers presence, they are perfectly fine being left alone. This is very different from humans, or even social mammal species that will absolutely suffer in isolation.

Bearded dragons are amazing and enjoy hanging with Loki everyday. Then there is Titan, mascot at the gym and he literally runs to the front of the enclosure when I arrive no matter what time of day it is.
I do have to say one of my leopard tortoises is a social butterfly and will come trotting across the pen when anyone is outside.

I absolutely agree with the idea that reptiles may not “love” in the sense most people think of, but they can absolutely bond and trust their owner. I also fully believe they can get to a point where they enjoy being with their owners.
Our Blue Eyed Lucy (named Lucy) not only seeks to come out of her enclosure, but she has legitimately responded to my voice when I talked to her while in her enclosure.
While our other Ball Pythons seem to enjoy affection and being handled, literally none of them seek attention and handling or respond to my voice talking to them the way Lucy does.
Reptiles are incredible creatures, and who’s to say they aren’t over time slowly evolving as we continue to own and work with them to become more and more “intelligent” and or capable of “feelings” that we’ve never known them to be capable of??

    • @user-rd3ou5ev6o

@@user-rd3ou5ev6o, they absolutely do have ears. They have all the main parts of the ear, it’s all just internal.
“Snakes do not have an external ear, but they do have all the parts of the inner ear that we do. Their stapes-called a “columella”-is slightly different from ours in that it connects to the jawbone, enabling them to sense vibrations. However, they can only hear a portion of the sounds we hear.”

Bearded dragons are amazing and so engaging. They will try to communicate with you in their own way. I did see an adorable video of tiny baby alligator chirping for chin pets. I feel it is very important to remember that because their existence can be incredibly tenuous that forming the intense bonds found in more warm blooded animals would be detrimental for their survival. But they show what they can in their unique language.

I call my BP affectionate because of how it trusts me. When I hold her, shes often turns completely relaxed. She knows that Im not just warm, but Im the thing that would never let her fall, even when she seems to be scared of heights in every other occasion.

  • @stanleyyy427

Pretty much any lizard _can_ show affection and form some bonds, HOWEVER not all of them will because each one has its own personality and some are less trustful than others.
I’ve seen snakes show affection. I have a bumblebee ball python named flower, we use a rack system, and every time we open the rack she slithers right out onto our hands and just chills. She loves being held and she’s very interactive, I love her. She’s the most docile and interactive of our 15 snakes.

    @alixanderjohnson5151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think some people who get reptiles go into it expecting them to act sort of like cats or dogs, and then get disappointed when they aren't. But just because they don't always act like that doesn't mean they can't be affectionate. I personally believe that reptiles absolutely show affection, but they do it in their own unique ways. And they definitely build bonds.
I'm not sure if anyone else has had an experience like this, but it's made me think that Garter Snakes are incredibly loving. One of my friends lives in a really small town, near a park. That park had a bunch of garter snake eggs hatch recently, plus there already being quite a few adults there. So far, I've caught about 20 snakes, and they've been so amazing. For starters, I've never been bitten by any of them, and none of them have tried to bite me or even hissed at me. Obviously they get a little scared when first picked up, and I get musked on quite a bit, but that's it. Even then, the little guys/gals usually calm down pretty quickly. They don't try to escape very much. The way I let snakes go is by setting my hands down on the ground with the snake in them, so they are free to slither off. Except that a lot of times, said snake doesn't want to slither off, apparently, because they stay on my hands and hang out with me. I've discovered how curious they are, they stretch out towards my friends when they are with me to smell them, they crawl up my arms and sometimes even try to get into my pockets. I've had plenty of them just get comfy in my hands and chill. I've been nuzzled by some, and others have even let me pet them very gently, and they seem to enjoy it. They are, to me, some of the friendliest snakes. And these are wild caught, unsocialized Garter Snakes I'm talking about.
To ease any worries there might be: I don't go around picking up snakes I don't recognize. If I can't tell what species it is, I leave it alone. If the snake I'm handling gets stressed, or doesn't calm down within a few minutes, I release them. The last thing I want to do is hurt them or cause them any harm. When I'm releasing, I always release the snake exactly where I found it. I'm very careful handling them, and I do my best to make sure each snake is comfortable. I don't apply pressure to the top of their bodies unless I'm very gently petting them, and if that scares them, or they don't like it, I stop.
I'm sorry this comment was so ridiculously long, but thank you to anyone who had enough patience to read through it. If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them in the reply section.
And lastly, keep doing what you're doing, man. I love your videos so much, they've taught me a lot. And as others have pointed out, it's obvious how much you care for your animals, and it warms my heart.

56: I had a 20 lb male green iguana for 13 years. I could bicycle around town with it on my shoulder. It was paper trained and yard trained. I was at college during the week. when I was gone, it would refuse to eat. When I came home, it would gorge itself. It was my buddy. More so than I expected. One year, it tried to breed with my arm. Yeah. They can bond with you more than you expect.

I *thought* some of the ink looked new! Congrats, it looks fantastic. I do think a lot of reptiles will actually choose to interact with the giant warm trees they know are safe. It's a special kind of Trust, if not love exactly like a mammal may show with oxytocin involved. My tortoise would come to my hands when he saw them offered. I think he associated me with food and good things.

I had no idea what they were 15 years ago when my then boss brought his red to work but I'd never met a reptile more interested in tactile contact, cuddling, and scritches than his girl, and I've yet to meet one that breaks that first impression. They just seem to really like hanging out with humans when they're not busy and yeah, what other reptile leans into cheek and back scratches like them?

I think there should have been several more species of skink. Skinks are highly underrated pets, many live in complex social groups, and anytime an animal lives in social groups they usually display social behaviors. I've kept several different species of skink, and from what I've observed, nearly all of them will not only acclimate to handling but almost seem to seek out human attention. This evening includes wild caught five lines skinks, that lived on my back porch, and remained wild. I could get them eating from my hand, and once a few of them were doing it the other ones would observe, and then I would have entire groups eating out of my hand on my back porch.

One of my hognoses favorite spots is my shoulder. I put a cuddle blanket over my shoulders and she just curls up under it. If I wear a headset or have my hair in a bun she climbs up on those to chill on my head for a few minutes. She also likes to watch TV. She is picky about the shows but if she likes it, she watches it motionless until the end and can't be bothered.
So I put my hognose on my shoulders and it goes well... most of the time. Sometimes she hangs halfway down my back.

I got her when my son w/ rare brain malformation was born, & they have such a connection, helping him to learn one of the 20 words he says, "Tur-ul!" She'll try to push open her terrarium door to get my attention, but doesn't do it for my husband, even though he's the main one to feed her. She adores pets & love, when I take her out to run around, she always walks towards me.

I definitely think bearded dragons are on the top of the list! I realized just how personable beardies were when I rescued my little dude from a bad situation ten years ago. Bart needed a lot of care and love when we got him because he was extremely underweight- 40 grams or so as a two year old and basically every bone in his body visible. To this day I handle Bart all the time and he’s really chill with us, but if an unknown person tries to interact with him he’s noticeably uncomfortable. He’ll start to try and walk away or he’ll puff out his beard a bit, but never with me. He gets excited when he hears me say “worm “ and looks up when we say his name. If he wants to be let out of his enclosure he will stare me down and scratch at the glass until I let him out lol. He’s got the run of the house when we let him out and he has favorite hangout spots that he regularly goes to. Bart will also frequently sit In front of my rats’ cage and his gaze follows them as they run around. He’s a really cool little dude and getting him was what made me really appreciate reptiles 😊 he’s now about twelve years old and still doing well! I would have never imagined that a reptile would be so interactive and understanding of his surroundings and I feel lucky to have him in my life 🙂 keep making awesome reptile videos!

As my dog ages further into his senior years he’s getting less comfortable with being held, he’s helped me a lot and I respect his new boundaries.

We had a green iguana that seemed affectionate like the rock- and rhino iguana mentioned in the video. It was the warmth of course but she also came when called and when she heard my daugters voice. She, the iguana, went straight to her, my daughter, even if she was in anohter room. The iguana also seemed to know when my daughter was free from school and asked (scratched the door) to come out of her terrarium and then she went and klimed up into my daughters bed in under the duvet/blankets and cuddled up beside my daughter and fell a sleep.
Had a beardie too that was quite like Diamond and he liked to sit in my bra (or rather on top of, you know what I mean) and looking out on the world from there.
Also I wonder if not a black and white argentinian teju would fit into this list. They seem to be quite cuddly too when well handeled.

sad that leopard gecko didn't make in on the list:(( mine always wants out and scratching glass atleast once a day and can chill on mi shoulder always when I'm studying for an hour or watching TV, even is very patient when I put him out and trying to bond him a bit with my cat. It just looks like he believes me that I will protect him if the cat wants to do something.

Our monkey-tail, "Kong," falls in the "not friendly" category so far. No matter what, he's a grumpy fellow with a lightening-fast strike and a strong bite. I don't even try to handle him without gloves. I'm hoping that one day, with a larger enclosure, we might get him a friend (for these are social skinks.) Of our other animals, the Merauke blue-tongue skink, the beardies, and the pink-tongue are great. The Eastern blue-tongue is huffy but allows himself to be held. The Gidgees (my little "fat boys") will let themselves be held, but don't exactly like it so far. They seem intelligent, though. They watch humans carefully, and I think in time they might get very friendly. One of our Ackies is mature and is super-friendly, while the other is just a baby/juvenile and still a little skittish.

I rhink fact that reptile trusts you enough to come to you is affection enough for me to be honest. For usually skittish animals it's a lot.

im okay with my lizards never being able to love me. that means I dont have to deal with an animal that roams around my house, gets into my stuff, sheds all over the place, knocks over objects, makes loud noises, requires outdoor exercise (or exercise from me in general), might destroy the house when im gone, requires daily feedings, or begs for attention by interrupting your work like dogs and cats. this also means that my family isn't gonna be miserable from allergies bc everyone is allergic to cats and some are allergic to dogs (but not me or my siblings for some reason). lizards are so much better than cats and dogs. the cons of cats and dogs far outweighs the benefits and vice versa for reptiles. as long as I can handle the lizard, it will be worth all the effort I put into them.

I mean to be fair for a lot of years I was terrified of those things because of something I saw on animal planet and then my celeb crush had to hold one on TV and I was scared for his life but I was seeing videos of people who had them as pets and I was like this is ridiculous I've seen what they can do to you babe yeah it was just the situation his I mean if you watch snake Discovery I mean Ally is a freaking puppy in a lizard suit I would totally pet her but after what I saw an animal planet the show called swamp wars when one got into this man's house and his dog trying to scare it off and it went after the dog and the guy tried to pull the dog away and lost the end of his finger it actually bit through the bone I was like oh God so when my celeb crush was holding one I was like oh my God it's close to his neck if it gets the idea to bite him he'll be dead before he hits the ground I got the shakes until he put it down but a lot of the fandom was telling me that's ridiculous the situation on animal planet was a wild specimen this was not wild it was one at a zoo that used to being handled by people it's basically a pet

I know it seems to be a negative suggestion and I don't know that it is as prevalent in Canada as it is now but because of prices skyrocketing here there is a growing issues of people surrendering or rehoming reptiles due to not being able to take care of them financially. It's something that needs to be addressed because there is quickly becoming more homeless pets than there are people willing to take care of them. It is overwhelming to rescues. So, people really need to be thinking of adopting rather than buying babies that have been bred to be sold.
