What bothers me more than immature infighting are those TH-camrs who feed live prey animals on their channel *EXPRESSLY FOR VIEWS.* Many people feed live food - a few reptiles do require movement to stimulate their feeding response. However, I think it’s highly unethical to film doing so regularly *JUST FOR CLOUT.* There’s something inherently wrong with posting a pet bunny being suffocated by a pet constrictor or live baby chicks/ducklings/kittens being torn apart by a monitor or tegu. Do the vast majority of us a favor & fulfill your “blood-lust” (and that of certain viewers) on your private channel. TBH I don’t know how YT allows it.
Also, those “animal fight” channels where perfectly healthy animals are made to fight each other (often to the death) strictly for views should be taken down. People like this give *ALL* animal enthusiasts a bad rap. Such vids give ammunition to proponents of the “Lacey Act” which would have the entire exotic pet-keeping hobby banished!

I think about the cost like this: I paid 300 for my snake that can live up to 30 yrs and eats once a week. Hubs paid 600 for a dog that lives half as long. Dog comes with automatic vet costs: needs updated rabies shots yearly plus flea and heartworm preventative meds year round plus quality dog food. Snake might need the obligatory health check up once or twice a year. Not counting emergency costs which could happen to both.

Dont buy from a dollar store. Dollar stores buy stock as cheaply as possible, which means much of its inventory is from China. Chinese manufacturers of cheap goods also buy the cheapest materials and ignore safety requirements. You dont know what nasty chemicals are leaching out of their plastic in your food or water dishes. Its just not worth the risk. Since plastic bowls and whatnot are things you are going to buy once and have forever, you are better off paying a few more bucks and get something from a pet store that, in theory, has checked the products are safe for animals.

I'm so glad you brought up the cage Karens. I'm not a new Reptile keeper by any means, so I wasn't scared away, but I had the most ridiculous run-in with a group of Cage Karens recently. I was in a group for Bearded Dragons on Facebook. I liked the idea of the group at first because they claimed to exist to spread helpful information and encourage new Bearded Dragon keepers. It seemed like a cool place to check out others' enclosures, as well as their dragons. Shortly after joining, I noticed that the 4-5 admins were ganging up and bashing every single person who's cage wasn't setup exactly like theirs. They started asking members, including myself, for photos and videos of setups/daily care routines so they could criticize every aspect of their reptile keeping. I simply ignored these requests, but people were constantly torn down by them. Then, if other members tried to console them or encourage them in any way that didn't line up exactly with what the admins wanted you to say, you were immediately censored, and would then receive a barrage of condescending private messages. This also expanded into personal choices. The admins have a list of "approved products and vendors", and if you don't use only things from this list, you are attacked. The exact incident that made me draw the line though was the most ridiculous of all. There's a particular Bearded Dragon Breeder that I've used for a few years now. He is amazing for the community. Not only does he breed some beautiful dragons, but he extremely informative and helpful. He provides an extremely comprehensive and well researched care guide, as well as a ton of information about specific morphs of reptiles. There was a new member of our group, who had never kept reptiles. She had questions because she was interested about Bearded Dragons. The ADMINS used links to my breeders morph and care information to help her make a decision. They said the links were the best collection of information they could find. I commented and recommended this man as a breeder. I told her that my last 2 dragons came from this man and encouraged her to contact him directly. I was immediately blocked from commenting, my comment was deleted, and I received 4 private messages, all as long as this comment lol. Basically I was told that he wasn't an "approved breeder" (i.e. one of the admins and her close friends that breed). They went on to say that since I wasn't an admin, I couldn't recommend purchases because I wasn't an admin, therefore I couldn't be trusted. That's bad enough, but they continued to state that the breeder himself couldn't be trusted because he wasn't on the approved list, but THEY WERE USING HIS CARE INFORMATION TO HELP OTHERS!!!

I only hate the MONEY SPENDING to be honest 🤣 in my country not a single reptile is as cheap as they can be in north america or uk.
Also my country is just generally very expensive.
Also I just bought huge new vivarium for my leopard gecko and also one for my BCI with a water feature to swim in.
Every time you english speaking countries think "man, this is expensive!" you bet yo ass it it much much mofe expensive in Finland 😆

For me, it's the community for sure. But not even the keyboard warriors. The literal convicted criminals. At least in my area of the U.S., exotic animals and felonies seem to go hand in hand. Not all of the felonies involve the reptiles, but some of them do. I have rescued a few animals from criminals on the run with warrants out for them. Many times there are thefts, hard drugs, assaults, and worse. Every show I go to in my area has me on edge because every year, at least a few of those vendors seem to get convicted with something that causes them to vanish mysteriously from the hobby.

You should look into the animal abuse from TH-camrs like Catch em all fishing, Joey Slay Em & Jacob Feder. Reach out to NERD New England reptile. They posted a video a couple weeks back. Because of this animal abuse laws are being passed, affecting people who keep reptiles for educational purposes.

Ugh, the cage Karens. Very few FB reptile groups without them. And about half the time it's some 19 year old whose only reptile experience is a beardie they've had for 6 months, but they've deemed themselves an expert.

  • @reedwetzel1324

I agree about the cage Karen's. Especially with ball pythons. A certain group freaked out when I put my 600 gram male ball python in a 4 by 2 by 1 enclosure from his 20 gallon enclosure I had , telling me he will be stressed and will not eat. I have been monitoring him for 3 weeks and he acting fine and has ate his last three meals. So now I really avoid that group.

Lol cage Karen’s 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I get so much crap about my crested geckos. I put them straight into large in closures. Never had an issue all bioactive setups. Get so much hate about loose substrate and large enclosures.

People who don’t offer help and just want to put down others in the hobby are the worst!
Posted a pic of my bioactive enclosure for 3 red eyed tree frogs for new plant suggestions. A dude posts that my enclosure is definitely too small and I should “do my research” before caring for animals. I asked which size he recommended and when I measured mine... it was 5 square inches bigger than his recommendation.

Bro I made the mistake of getting involved with the reptile community on Reddit. Absolute garbage. I was sharing how my special needs leopard gecko is in a ten gallon and people trashed me and called me a horrible keeper... yes, I know leopard geckos are better in 20 gallons and I don't mind you telling me that, but don't be rude for Pete's sake! A few other things that happened was I found a wild snake outside and some users told me to put it back, but they were name calling and being rude, and then when I asked advice for not overloading myself with reptiles I was called a hoarder and told to see a therapist.😩 Hey like sharing opinions is fine but don't trash other people holy crap
    Sorry that was long 😂

You mentioning that people complain about Diamonds enclosure is why I don't ever show Titania's enclosure. She has such a lovely bioactive enclosure and she is a younger dragon who spends 90% of her time up in her branches and is insanely healthy and growing like a weed. Sometimes I'm sad I can't show off her beautiful live plants and how she interacts with her clean up crew but at the same time so many people freak out about lose substrate.

Not just our scaly friends. We have 4 guinea pigs and the produce and insane amount of turds. Fortunately, their excrement is quite dry and rarely smells. it's the pee that's the odor problem. If someone could figure out how to litter box train them, they'd be the perfect pets.

I have bioactive for my ball python and ksb, I love it. Want to learn more on how I can improve. I used to drive 1hr away for just 1 live rat (I got a picky eater). K, I agree with 100% of this video. Another thing I would add to the list is the amount of animals that end up neglected and in need of rescue. Every one wants cute babies but some eventually get bored with them and they get forgotten. Or tossed out to fend for themselves. It's pretty horrible.
