    You don't even need to send out your ecu to get flashed, that's old school. The best method of flashing is doing it yourself. FT-ECU offers the best options for flashing with a laptop. They have the standard flashing kit and the Activetune kit.

    Great video, very useful information. As a long time drag racer familiar with reading plugs and jetting carbs I just want to clarify one thing. When reading plugs the porcelain tells us two things, overall engine condition and if we are running the proper heat range. Dark porcelain indicates that the plug is too cold and not retaining enough heat to clean itself. Too hot a plug will have a very white and possibly blistered porcelain. For air fuel ratio we need to concentrate on the shell. Spark plug manufacturer's and the aftermarket sell lighted magnifers just for looking down into the shell to see the color. The color down inside the shell indicates what is actually happening in the combustion chamber and is not affected by how well the porcelain is transferring heat to the cylinder head. Thanks again for sharing all your mods. I'm doing pretty much the same stuff to my 2022.

    A 100% stock bike, exhaust and all, can benefit from a proper tune. No, I don't mean a canned map, I mean a proper tune by a professional on a dyno using a fuel controller that you can actually tune with. Increased performance, better fuel economy, and seamless drivability can be expected.
    Fuel injectors shut off on deceleration. When the engine gets to a certain rpm nearing idle, they come on again and BANG! Easily tuned out if the tuner knows what he's doing.
    Are you wondering if your bike is running lean? Yes, it is. Now you know.

    My MT07 was running a bit lean (at light load) after mounting a full exhaust and DNA air filter. ECU remap and dyno solved that and gave a decent increase in HP (nothing crazy), but a more smooth powerband and power delivery.

    I'm confused, are you saying you installed brand new spark plugs, then rode the bike for 100 miles and that's how they looked?

  • @mad082sss
    @mad082sss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    A much more accurate way to test it would be to use a wide band o2 sensor (which is what they use on a dyno to tune them), since the air/fuel ratio changes throughout the rev range and at different loads. It will always be leaner at light load and lower rpm. At higher load and higher rpm it will run richer. So how you ride will determine what the plus look like Plugs only tell part of the story since ignition timing also affects how they look.
    And were they new plugs installed for the 100kms? If not then the test is a waste of time as well.
    Most people misunderstand how fuel injection works, and think that adding something that increases airflow means the bike will run more lean than what it did beforehand. With a few exceptions this is false. The ecu has a sensor that monitors how much air goes in and adds the appropriate amount of fuel. The mapping has load points past where you will hit in everyday use. 1 reason for this is the change in air density as air cools. If this wasn't the case then it your bike ran a little bit lean in summer, then if you live somewhere that gets snow and rode it in winter then it would be dangerously lean. The same applies to cars. This is why you can add an exhaust and it doesn't actually change the AFR much at all (the only change is from using a different load cell for that throttle position and rev range). In a lot of cases, when you do actually exceed the mapping load points the ecu will actually cut power (some will retard the ignition and go stupidly rich in the last cells before you exceed them to reduce the power).

      Thanks for the comment with such valuable information. I completed what I could with the tools I have. Peace ✌️

    • @Calvingarage
      @Calvingarage ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true but not entirely, its true that motorcycles do have o2 sensors dedicated for monitoring the afr all the time. BUT, this is not all the time, the o2 works generally in closed loop with the fueling table so little corrections can be applied. Problems really comes when full throttle situations, in most of bikes when you are 100% throttle the fuel injection goes straight to the fuel table that is mapped in the ecu. So in these situations you do will be runing lean.

  • @BenTV73
    @BenTV73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you use the DNA airfilter & open airbox lid the standard ECU will compensate. Mine is running a little bit rich but I run with the baffle in the exhaust (I have neighbours). I will be getting it remapped but not until next year but it runs fine with the airbox & exhaust as is.

  • @ericc.363
    @ericc.363 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As long as you use the O2 sensor of course you will be stock bike lean, you are running stock fueling. I just ran a bike on my dyno and was surprised it was quite close on air fuel.

    I’m new to the motorcycle world so I might be wrong but i don’t see the purpose of tuning after installing an aftermarket exhaust. I see that the MT-07 has an 02 sensor. The ECM gets the input from the 02 sensor and makes fuel adjustments depending on the reading. Well at least that’s how it works on fuel injected cars.

    Hi B-rad. Awesome video as always, super informative. Does the piggyback system come with a base tune on it or does one have to have knowledge on tuning? Also do you know of any options to make the Mt-07 a bit louder without having to go down the tuning route. Thanks for your content.

    • @BradTheBuilderChannel
      @BradTheBuilderChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the kind words!! Been working hard to deliver better content. So the unit does come pre tuned for the stock exhaust. Gives it a touch more fuel. To install one of the dynojet tunes you will need to install their software which you would gain access to once you purchase the unit. There is an instructional video on their website how to download and use the software. It’s very easy but to go in and adjust the tune is advanced and recommend a phone call to dynojet if you want to go crazy. The tunes they provide are pretty good as is. Sending your ECU in to get flashed would be the easiest for someone who doesn’t plan on making changes themselves. It is also cheaper.
      Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? If not, there really isn’t a way to make it louder stock. I wouldn’t recommend making changes to your stock system if that’s what your running. I wish the mt07 had a slip on option for its exhaust. It’s not designed for that but would be a middle ground for riders to be able to get better sound without dropping hundreds of dollars and scratching their heads. Unfortunately that’s not the case. A full system of exhaust is the only way to make it louder.Remember as discussed in this video though. The carbon Akrapovic is designed to be run without a tune verified by both revzilla and Akrapovic themselves. It’s up to the user if they want to tune. I personally like to be on the safe side which is why I went with a tuning system.

    Hi there! Awesome video, subscribed! I was hesitating for months between the CB650R and the MT-07, but it looks like I finally decided to go with the MT-07, because I will be mainly use it in the city, and the torque comes in very handy, I still like the looks better of the CB650R though. Aftermarket headlight options are anyway available, so I don't care that much about it. My question is, do I really need to change my factory suspension, is it really that trash? I am not going to go on track, and I don't think I will find myself on the twisties too much either, but everyone is shouting how trash the suspension is. I don't want to do tons of mods, because I am certain this will not be my last bike. Would you buy an exhaust with tune for what I will be doing, or would you instead do rear and front suspension upgrades like YSS rear shock absorber, and YSS fork upgrade kit? I obviously would love to have more sound, but not too loud or ear piercing, but if I don't enjoy riding on the bike because the suspension is unbearable for city use, then it makes no sense to do anything before suspension upgrade. Your reply is much appreciated, have a nice day dude!

    • @BradTheBuilderChannel
      @BradTheBuilderChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree everyone rages about how bad it is. In reality the mt07 would be a flop of a bike if it was that bad. The fz/mt 07 is one of the most popular naked bikes out there. For price point, it’s near unbeatable. I don’t have an issue with my suspension with the daily riding I do. Sure if your going into turns at high speeds and using it for track days then absolutely I would upgrade the suspension but it’s not necessary for daily riding. I have never had a dangerous moment with it either “caused by suspension”. People I think caught onto a trend and feel like they have to do it for it to be rideable and that’s not the case at all. An exhaust in the city would be nice so people can hear and see you. To me an exhaust is essential to safety. People are ruthless out there. Hope this helps and stay safe!

      @@BradTheBuilderChannel By the way, have you ridden the 3rd gen MT-09? For 1500 plus, you get more electronics (IMU, Lift control traction control, drive modes, up & down quickshifter. etc.), better suspension, better sound from stock, less snappy throttle response (based on reviews, driving modes can change the characteristics of the bike a lot. Mode 3 and 4 is very throttle friendly.), better brakes, better frame, looks like a better package. If I would go with the MT-07, I would probably get the Akrapovic option from factory, which sets the price already to MT-09 territory. Additionally, I like the stock sound of the MT-09, so I would not have to change anything on that bike, it is just perfect as it is. Would I be able to have the same fun as the MT-07 for my type of use? @@sethlabarbera8515 flash tunes allow you to tap into more settings. You ship out your ECU and then they ship it back with the tune. Powercommander allows you to take it off and return to stock. ECU flash does not. Returning to stock is nice to be able to problem solve in the case of an issue. Powercommander can be updated and adjusted anytime and you can put the tune on right away. Not wait while shipping it out. Powercommander is more money. ECU flash is $200 cheaper and pretty much once it’s flashed your good to go for the life of the bike. Updates to the ECU flash require you to take it off the bike again and send it back in. In all honesty both options have their ups and downs. I would be interested to try the flash tune versus the powercommander to see if the difference is noticeable

    Hey B-Rad, my 2018 XSR700 has been very rich for a while. It runs good, no bogging that I can tell, but rich. By rich I mean 70-80 miles max out of a tank of gas. ~27-32MPG even when I baby it. Smells really bad too.. Full exhaust, active tune o2 sensor, new map sensor, and tuned/flashed by a very reputable shop that does most FZ07 ECU flashes/tunes nationwide. Plugs look great, Hord Power air intake. I love my bike and have done a million mods to it so don’t want to trade it out. Do you have any ideas of what it could be?

    • @BradTheBuilderChannel
      @BradTheBuilderChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a tough one. Your plugs might look good at lower rpm’s when checked. Only way to get a true reading is plug chopping at different rpm’s. It might show rich at higher rpm’s. Did it start randomly? Or like right after a specific mod or tune?
      If I was in your boat I would question the tune despite it being from a reputable place. The active tune could be counter balancing something too. Can you run the bike without the active tune hooked up and run straight off the ECU. If so unplug it and see how she does

      It’s hard saying time wise I basically had the tune and exhaust on it right away maybe after ~200 miles. I know someone with the same bike, exhaust and tune from the same shop with no issues. We actually installed the active tune as a hopeful solution or at least aid to improve the MPG. Was a pain too because it requires a new larger bung in the exhaust. So I can’t swap back to stock o2 either to test.

      Using a K&N air filter should be able to be adjusted for by the stock ECU. The oil filter is not particularly relevant, but likely a waste of money compared to the OEM filter.
      Don't get the ECU mods for the air filter unless you are going to get the ECU mods anyway.

    • @BradTheBuilderChannel
      @BradTheBuilderChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What’s up Matt! That fan stock I believe kicks in around 210 degrees so if yours is kicking in early at 201 then your ECU might be tuned. I know that’s a common adjustment people make when tuning their ECU’s. Okay so it sounds like it’s running like it should. That unburnt fuel smell is perfectly normal especially on startup because the ECU auto chokes the engine to start. With a free flowing exhaust such as the M4, there is no catalytic converter so unburnt combustion gasses will ultimately exit the exhaust because there is nothing to catch it or filter it out. If you start to notice lots of carbon build up that’s more wet than dry and has a greasyness to it inside the exhaust pipe then you might have an issue with burning oil. This is very unlikely. But as far as the smell, I wouldn’t worry about it.

    • @BradTheBuilderChannel
      @BradTheBuilderChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      The power commander is a unit that plugs into the existing wiring harness and alters the ECU when riding. When the unit is unhooked from the bike it returns to the stock ECU. An ECU flash is where you take your ECU off the bike or bring it in to have it flashed. Flashing allows you to change more settings on the ECU over the power commander. Both methods are altering how much fuel is delivered to the cylinders via the exhaust sensor.
