For an AVERAGE rider MT-07 is amazing choice. Its fun, torquey, agile, cheap, holds value and is bulletproof reliable.. also it LOVES wheelies! but of course, if you are getting serious with motorcycles you will get to the point when it is just not enough and you need to upgrade.. and that's totally okay..
I have my MT-07 for almost 2 years /20 000km now. Needed only oil changes and new set of tires since i bought it brand new. I am super happy with it, even went for a couple of track days with it. I am looking forward to upgrade for the next season.

I did a 600km ride through the alpes yesterday on my Duke 390 and it made me fall in love with it all over again. I pushed it through mountain pass after mountain pass, through the clouds and chased a GT3RS through a completely empty Sustenpass. It was awesome. Anyone who says a small bike is not enough just hasn’t pushed it hard yet. The real fun start when you press the brakes, not the accelerator. I think they made the 07 platform as a second thought after they made the 09 platform. I imagine it went some like this:
Boss: Hey guys, can you make a cheaper MT09 ?
    Engineers: How cheap ?
Boss: Cheap enough to retain 2 cylinders, all else you can trow out the window and use the cheapest materials and parts we can get away with.
Engineers: Are you sure this is going to sell well ? (proceeds to show an MT07)

Calling a +70hp with insane torque a "beginer bike" is what causes 18 year olds to buy 180hp suicide machines to prove themselves. The MT-07 also felt a bit "cheap" in some senses to me, compared to my SV650. It felt like "too light and floaty" to have a good feel in corners. I bought an mt07 as my first big bike after riding a 125 for 2 years. For me it's the best big beginner bike, it's super cheap ( bought it for 7000€ new in 2021 ) and very reliable. Has enough power to get you in trouble, and enough torque to be fun. If you're coming from a bigger bike i can see why you didn't like it, since everything is very basic, but that's why it's so cheap. With this bike i did both track days and moto touring and both were amazing. After 50k km in 3 years i will sell it and buy an mt09sp but i still think it's an amazing bike

The advantages offered by upside down forks are not applicable during street riding. You are experiencing the placebo effect, if you think a traditional fork is not sufficiently stiff for a couple rides around town or on the highway. You need to be really pushing the envelope on the track for the difference to even become noticeable. For a street rider, a traditional fork is better because if the seals fail you don't lose all the oil, and they are easier to service since you can drain and refill them without taking them out of the bike. The reason most bikes come with USD forks today is because of the larp factor, the same reason they are coming out with winglets on street bikes too (They don't do anything except look cool)

Just to chime in on the injury thing... I do Enduro MTB'ing, in January I had a heavy crash and smashed up ribs on my left side... I also contemplated whether I should give up on it, as it was 5 weeks of recovery, etc... I decided against it, did a few more Enduro events and rode a fair bit of gnarly trails in Cape Town... and then 4 weeks ago... I had another wild crash, fractured 2 ribs, tore my shoulder rotator cuff, and smashed up my thigh... needless to say, I'm now giving up on the Enduro MTB thing, as I'm sitting with 12+ weeks of recovery in 6 months, and getting hurt like this sux. So don't let anyone else tell you you did the wrong thing for quitting MX... your life and your body, do what suites your lifestyle and it's easy for people who haven't gone through the motions to comment on things like this, but at the end of the day you are the one that has to go through the entire healing process and inconvenience of being injured, being unable to function in day-to-day life. Instead of a well thought out chassis/suspension/brake setup which teaches riders to progressively increase their speed and ability whilst staying in the bikes comfort zone, Yamaha dumped a powerful, fun torquey engine into a bike with trash suspension, grabby brakes and a flexible frame which WILL lead to the bike being unstable when the rider inevitably wants to go faster.

From owning an 2017 FZ07 for 6 years I’ll say these bikes are more for the modification group (like myself) Yamaha will sell you the bike, but you make is as quick as you want, responsive and aggressive. Like yours I have the same exhaust and a tune. But I also have the de-restrictor plate on the throttle body, a Corbin seat that drops you lower into the bike a bit, new rearsets styled for super-sport bikes and the BEST change: woodcraft handlebars to mimic the forward aggressive style of super-sport bikes. And it has changed the feeling of the motorcycle. Now do many people like to dump money into a motorcycle like that; meh there’s a few but I know from experience riding a 4 cylinder super-sport with its specialized suspension, power and electronics is something the FZ/MT cannot touch.

@@Daniel-dj7fh honestly I think the ZX4R would be quite perfect, it has less torque than your CB500F and makes peak torque at twice the rpms so when it comes to acceleration it's not all that fast until you get to 10k+. Obviously once you're in those higher rpms it'll be a lot faster than the CB, it's a faster bike after all, but in terms of simple acceleration from a standstill it's probably not much quicker.
The CBR650R is very different in that aspect being more of a sports touring bike so it makes a lot of torque at low rpms (for an I4) meaning it'll pull really hard in almost every gear

I've been saying all that for years. Where I'm from it costs a whopping 9.5k. Had 2 long term rentals: a 1st gen and a 2nd gen. The only thing to like is the engine. That butter frame and poggo suspensions plus the weak brakes made me ask why it is so expensive, and the conclusion was "oh yeah, everyone has one, it sells like hot cakes", so they upped the price alot.

I sold my MT07 and bought an MT09. The MT07 was very nimble but the power felt jerky at low speeds, not fun when you have to commute on slow speed roads. I love the power delivery on the mt09 and it feels way more stable on the fwy on windy days.
I almost bought a triumph street triple r but found a good used mt09 2022. I would still like to try the triumph it is as small as the MT07 just a bit taller and I hear is has a way more linear power delivery and sporty seating position.

I respect an honest review. That said, I feel exactly the opposite. I’ve been riding for around 15 years. I’ve owned an FZ09 and now the MT07. The 09 triple is a great engine but the bike is not near as comfortable or forgiving. If speed is what you want all the time, the MT07 is probably not for you. I’ve grown out of high speed thrill seeking but still enjoy being hooligan sometimes. That’s my 2 cents.

Two washers under the risers eliminates the bar movement.
DNA stage 2 intake + mapping
    R6 throttle tube
    Dave moss fork fork mod/cartridge
    Any aftermarket rear shock.
Braided brake lines, master cylinder and Brembo pads.
With this you get an awesome little bike that handles good, power wheelies in second every time you want and sound good!

Had a 2022 mt07 as my first bike since October of that year. Currently at 16,800 miles (27,036 kilometers) and now that I'm getting close to knee dragging and more advanced riding, I definitely realize how bad the suspension is. Don't get me wrong, as a beginner this is THE BEST BIKE you can buy off the showroom. It's plenty of power, sounds amazing, is relatively affordable, and it looks good too. Just know that you'll probably grow out of it after a couple years or want a bike more capable in the corners if that's the style of riding you grow to enjoy.

As someone that bought that same gen MT07 for commuting, I can agree it is built to a price. The forks and brakes are particularly not sporty. It was designed to compete with the older SV650 and Ninja 650 bikes not bikes like the Street Triple or R6 for example. As with all the other comments here, I agree a Street Triple sounds like the right bike for you. The MT07 has a fun engine, is a good commuter and can wheelie well but if you've been spoilt by ANYTHING decent in the past then the it makes sense that the MT07 will disappoint. It's light weight, short wheel base and torquey engine is what made it a legend. When the MT07 released out back in 2014 it didn't have much competition, then the KTM Duke 790 came out, then every other manufacturer just kept coming out with better iterations of light-weight affordable naked bikes.

I got a XSR 700, and took my lessons on a MT-07, and they're both basically the same bike. The truth is that this bike hasn't changed much since 2014, while the rest of the industry has put everything they got into making good competitors to it because of how popular it is. I'm happy with mine because I got it for a great price, but brand new it's a much harder sell. The fix would be pretty easy though, just offer a SP version with the R7's improved suspension and brakes and everyone wins.
For your MT, I think some upgrades to the suspension and brakes can really transform it and make it a bike you can love, but you can also just get a Duke 790 and be done with it. I'd look at whichever option is cheaper.
As for my XSR, I love the engine, the compact size, the looks, the ride. The only thing that lets it down is the suspension. I'll have to decide if I want to upgrade it or sell it and get something else when I get my full license. It could make for an awesome cafe racer with some good mods.

I have an mt07 2021 I bought it new 3 years ago and i did a lot of modifications to it i 100% agree that it should have usd forks since the r7 (witch is essentially the same bike) has them, i mounted custom made mounts for radial calipers by brembo and full ohlins suspensions including a steering damper it’s very fun and i enjoy riding it more than my s1k still it’s not a proper “sporty” naked in the end it’s just opinions i love your content keep it up

I feel this rn. I have an 06 zx6r and just sold my Tracer 900 GT and bought a DRZ400sm because I thought that I wanted to do supermoto shenanigans with my friends. Most of them don't have supersports anymore and none of them have touring bikes like Tracers. I thought that if I bought a sumo I would have fun with it and I could hang out with them more. And while that is technically true, it's a lot more fun to ride with them on the DRZ instead of my zx6r or tracer, I just don't like the bike itself. It's not the kind of riding I enjoy. I like touring. I like long trips. And I like going fast with my 636. I've only had the DRZ for 2 weeks and I deeply regret selling my Tracer already. Most of the time when I ride I'm by myself. We all work. We all have lives. We don't always have time to ride together. And riding together is the only time I seem to enjoy it. Most of my time riding during the week is spent on my 35 minute commute and/or running errands. On weekends I usually ride around and would occasionally take the Tracer on longer day or weekend trips. Now that I no longer have it, I realize how much I miss the ability to do so and how much I miss the comfortability on the freeway. I'm very glad I still have my 636 because if I was stuck with just the DRZ I would go insane. I will probably try to get my hands on a used 21+ Tracer 9 this fall or winter.

If you like the way that the KTM rides but want a little more oomph try an Aprilia Shiver 750. I have a gen 1 & the riding position is close to my Duke 200. A friend has the gen 2 that has higher mounted footpegs & a sportier riding position. They both have everything attached correctly (USD forks, radially mounted brakes etc) and have around a 15 kW advantage over an equivalent MT-07. And, at least here in Australia, they're criminally under rated so they're cheap, especially for an Italian V Twin.

It's the same thing as Honda leaving cruise control and decent suspension off the Transalp: they want the price to be such that if you care about suspension and cruise control, the cost to add those things puts your total in the Africa Twin range anyway, so it pushes the customer to buy one of those (maybe it's called "inherent upsell"?). If you want to put proper suspension on the MT-07, you probably also would want the motor to be a little peppier, so after a tune and a pipe and forks and shock, you're close enough to the MT-09 price, might as well just get one of those in the first place. No replacement for displacement, anyway; tune wouldn't even get you there (although it is a lighter bike). Seems to me it's a case of manufacturers making bikes to slot into the market and as offering-tools to guide buyers up to higher-priced models by leaving out desired features. Zach on Daily Rider said something about how the V100 Mandello was different in that respect. Too bad there are no Guzzi dealers or techs...anywhere? Not many in the US, anyway.

Gotta make it your own bro, do the fork mods, change the bars and get a remap it starts to feel like an MT. Yamaha just sell the 07 bad from the factory.

Maybe not comment worthy but im going through a tough time so here we go regardless. I got into motorcycles in the second half of 2021 when i lost my second job in a year due to covid and I started a job at an estate just outside of George 5km there and 5km back, it might sound silly nos but money was and still is tight and all i could think about was getting a bike to save on some petrol money. Ive been a car guy all my life and your videos have been a guideline of sorts. I started on a honda steed 400 for a year and then bought a honda cbr 600 f4 that i would not trade for the world. Thank you for your honest content from a fellow South African, keep up the good work boet

Not only are they right side up forks, they're terribly configured too! Way too soft and thus bounce all over the place. It can be fixed tho but still why release a bike in such a state?

I owned only a DRZ400SM for 10 years and just bought a MT-07 as a transition to get into real motorcycles. I enjoy it, but it's definitely not a keeper bike, mainly because of the rust issues if you drive in all weather.

I really would like your opinion on SV650 since they are spiritually related. I find MT to be better on paper but SV being a more wholesome experience.

Same story to mine. My buddy and I went on a 8000 km trip from Canada to the states last year. It was supposed to be 10 days trip. 3 hr in, I realized touring is not my thing. And my buddy’s bike broke down the first day. 😅

100% agree, I don't believe on TH-camrs reviews anymore, and never believed on OEMs advertising. They just look for audience. My first bike was a FZ-07 (2017) and I loved it but is a beginners bike, just that. Now I have a XSR900 and it is just at another level.

FZ-07 is NOT a beginner bike aha, maybe in the US, sure

@@K61rYes, I'm in US and here it is considered a beginners bike mainly if you ride on highways where limit is 70mph. It is a good point. I was born in Brazil and over there the smallest bike has a 150 cc engine and is very common, over there it is considered as utilitarian as people use for delivery services. A MT07 would be a big bike there.

agree ...and while we are at it... the R7 should never have had the designation of "R" either

I get it. I've heard nothing but good about my present bike, purchased about three months ago, but TBH I don't like it. Nothing wrong with the bike. It's gorgeous, it rides wonderfully, it's comfortable, but it's just not my cup of tea. It's a '93 Vulcan 88 with 14,000 miles on it. Beautiful bike. Great to look at and shine up. Doesn't get my juices flowing, though.

I haven't ridden the MT07 but what he says about the bars and the wobbly risers is interesting. The angle of the bars looks off to me, too much pull back. I would say straighter bars would be better, and there's absolutely no need for anything other than fixed alloy risers on any road bike.

There's a lot of negativity towards bigger motorcycles. Some of it is warranted; we can't just keep escalating size and features forever. Smaller bikes have their place, but so do bigger bikes.
I ride a Super Tenere because I'm very tall and ride year round, so features like weather protection, shaft drive and surviving drops are very important to me. The weight can be a problem, but is also a plus for when I ride past road trains when I cross the Nullarbor in Australia (3 times so far).
A lot of people look at the excesses of some big bikes and seem to venerate smaller bikes, even when they have some glaring flaws or weaknesses. Japanese manufacturers seem to really cheap out on suspension at the low end (and mid-range, too). My friend's RC390 was like a real life video game, but some parts were very brittle, expensive and harder to get.
Though we should consider the price point a budget bike is built to, we should be able to critique them, as you have done.

As someone who also has owned a few mt09s along with a bunch of other bikes from the 70’s to now
I hopped onto the MT07 and it was great, don’t get me wrong, but it had no character
It felt safe, but for the wrong reasons
I can see the mass appeal for it, the same as the Ninja 650 and cb650r are also great bikes with the same feeling, they just feel like the Toyota Camrys of the bike world
