Today is the deadline for this years NESmaker Byte Off competition. There are over 100 contestants. I think it's safe to say that there will be some cool new NES releases this year.
Definitely! Especially genesis releases have a high quality, which is probably due to the straight forward architecture. It also helps that memory is much cheaper than 30 years ago
To be fair, current "homebrew" developers enjoy massive advantages over the older original game developers. The TOOLS are so much better now, from graphics to sound to music to even coding languages (Now you can program an entire Sega Genesis game in C, back then assembly was the only option). But the biggest advantage is TIME, the older original developers only had months, sometimes weeks, to make a game. Now "homebrew" developers can take years to complete a game.
If Life On Mars had been released on the Genesis during its heyday, I guarantee that gaming magazines would've hailed it as "Sega's answer to Super Metroid". 😁
First class as always mate. These are definitely my favourite kind of videos from you. Been a subscriber for about 8 or 9 years now, and it's easily one of the best channels on TH-cam. Cheers brother.
I never really thought about it but I see a lot of parallels between this channel & CGR.. Right down to the fact that both even had co hosts back in the day.. Maybe they should do a collaboration..
Yup! Agreed. I HATE when devs make a game too tough just for the sake of it. What's challenging for the Devs isn't going to be the same for everyone else, clearly.
Probably because those weren't as big in the 90's, it was all about the 1-on-1 fighting games, like Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown and various other one offs. SF2 blew up in the arcades near the beginning, then there was Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, etc.
@@callak_9974 I understand but I have to disagree. Neo Geo came out in 1990. Final fight came out in the arcades in 1989. It spawned loads of beat em ups. Heck even Capcom on their CPS1 and CPS2 arcade hardware and Konami had loads of beat em ups in the arcades. Cadillac & Dinoaurs, Vendetta, Alien vs Predator, Captain Commando, Simpsons the arcade game, The Punisher and many more were released in the 90s. Both Konami and Capcom and a few other developers released loads of them in the 90s. By comparison SNK released very few. The ones from SNK aren’t very good either. Which kind of makes me wonder that they didn’t really put a big effort into the genre. They put a lot more effort into shmups and traditional fighting games.
TBH most Neo Geo beat em ups sucked. The first two Sengoku games are just boring due to enemies dying in 1 hit, Burning Fight is an average ripoff of Final Fight, Robo Army and Mutation Nation are okay, and Ninja Combat is dreadful due to the unnecessary complex controls. The only good one is Sengoku 3 which came out at the end of Neo Geo's lifespan and even then it's rather repetitive.
@@richardfan7157 that is exactly my experience. For an arcade system it had very few decent beat em ups. It’s clear that SNK weren’t playing in the same league as Capcom or Konami.
We reviewed Astebros together with St1ka on the New Game Old Flame podcast. I definitely felt that the game was a bit harsh on deaths and really prevented progress, knowledge what’s what and experimentation. I also played only with the sword guy so that could’ve been the problem. After the review I went back playing with the Mage and some use of save states and had a ton of fun to beat it! Maybe after that beat I could play it again without save states but they definitely helped me to learn the game.
New Mega Drive/ Genesis games have a certain look to them, I'm not sure if it's the chosen colour pallet or if it's a special Dev kit but they don't have that original Mega Drive/genesis look. Not complaining it's just an observation.
life on mars looks like it would do better with the camera perspective zoomed out just a bit. and livelier colors to help better differentiate between the different types of sprites (effects, monsters, environment) but all in all the visual style looks like a dream game i would have had back in the 90's. I'm totally getting Alien Carnage, Abuse and Bio Menace vibes.
I miss some love for "Insane Pain". A rather unusual fighting game, which was released last year on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and impresses with a great soundtrack and an unusual graphic style. Not a game for everyone, but the right one for this topic.
If you're still looking for more new games for old consoles, there's a game called _Goodboy Galaxy_ that just came out for the Game Boy Advance, about a dog astronaut on a quest across the galaxy.
@@thenightstar8312oh i am sorry, it seems you dont value other peoples opinions, it is unfortunate but it is also something you will eventually need to learn how to deal with constructively some day
I got a copy of Astebros a couple of weeks ago in a tiny retrogaming shop in Akihabara. I really wanted to get it, but could not decide because it was quite expensive... until my girlfriend decided to buy it for me 🥰 I didn't have much time to play it yet, but what I saw is great. It is amazing what people can do nowadays with decades of accumulated knowledge and no time or storage limitations!.
Hey Joe, I know that you totally know this, just posting in case someone is interested in picking up a physical copy of those games for a great price. Game on! 🤜🤛
Good video; never was aware of Dinoforce until watching this and it looks like a solid middle-of-the-road type of PC Engine Hucard shmup. Vengeance Hunters is a great choice for the Neo-Geo as the console had a lack of scrolling beat-em-ups compared to all of the 2D one-on-one fighting games. The platform is so well suited to the beat-em-up genre so glad to see a new one get developed.
Nice to see BT Garner's final homebrew reviewed. Sad we'll never see Xymati. RIP BT. Vax and Implode are the games I enjoyed the most from his last release.
Omg hump ball is a recreate of one of those old shareware compilation games (100+ Games!! cds from the early days of cd rom drives), possibly just called Volleyball Wow, played a LOT of that over summers having friends over… Completely forgot about those times until seeing that! Thx redifer!
I did end up buying Life on Mars and Life on Earth reimagined. My Genesis is currently in storage so I’d have to get my retron 5 out of the closet to play it them right now. Interesting though is on both games if you preordered for the initial release, they included your name in the manual. Maybe some future archaeologists will find my name in a preserved game manual of Life on Earth Reimagined.

I love and grew up with the Mega Drive it’s amazing to see all theses talented people make new games for my all time favourite console and wow so many new games that I have brought TangleWood , XenoCrisis , Demons of Astoborg , Asterbro, The Curse Knight , Black Jewel , Alien Cat , Foxy Land , and there’s many many more I would also love own a box cart copy of Mega Final Fight when it’s finish if that’s possible I wish the Brazil talented guy was given chance to from CapCom to work with to let him release as I would definitely buy a box copy if allowed too. Also I would love the same thing with other Brazilian guy I forgot his name he did a great port of Real Bout Fatal Fury for the Mega Drive and it’s amazing awesome he implemented nearly everything from the arcade Neo Geo even the Super Desperate meter Move which is great apart from that just the down graded back ground / back drop its looks good.
Unfortunately most indie devs nowadays are good visual artists with some knowledge about programming. Everything else like stage designing, story writing etc. is VERY lacking (that goes not only for the retrogaming) I tried to play many times Demons of Asteborg and couldn't get very far because it plays very bad.
12:41: Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how the SNES version of Xeno Crisis turns out. The SNES controller is surely going to feel great for the dual 8-way movement and 8-way shooting.
