      The first wave of 3d games 32/64bit had horrible graphics, the hardware wasn't ready to compete with the amazing artworks of the 2d graphics,

      There are a couple 2D Serious Sam games -- not FPSes, but spinoff titles.
      There's also a 2D action platformer for Bloodrayne.
      You covered a lot of GBA stuff in this episode, but SEGA had some neat conversions on it too, like the GBA version of Space Channel 5. And if you wanted to go Nintendo, then Banjo Kazooie got Grunty's Revenge on the GBA, which is also pretty darn fun. Oh, and the GBC version of Perfect Dark!

    I think the stark soundscape and small intervals of a tune here and there is what added to the mystique and atmosphere of raiding an actual tomb. That feeling of isolation was what made the game more interesting for me.

      I used to have the same opinion as Joe until the modern TR games came out. It made me realize how much I misinterpreted the classic TRs because at least they weren't generic cover shooters like modern TR. You actually felt like an explorer in classic TR, even the platforming was puzzle-like.

      The first level of the first Tomb Raider is very underrated. I don't think anyone has done a great job conveying what made it special.

    • @alfiehicks1
      @alfiehicks1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A soundscape can be stark without being completely absent, though. The total lack of any sort of ambience just makes the game feel unfinished and lifeless. A game that strives to create an atmosphere should always have some kind of sound playing, even if it's just wind, or water, or some non-diagetic ambience. That way, you even get to use true silence as a means to create tension.

    In the beginning of y2k I found myself a bit lost as a gamer since many of the genres I enjoyed weren't popular anymore and the indie market or online stores had not yet exploded like today. During that era I played a lot of J2ME games on my Mobile Phone. A *lot* of popular franchises got simple games for the mobile that could be finished in a few hours, usually in classic genres such as adventure games, platformers, tactical rpg's or zelda-style games. Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed etc. I often found myself enjoying them more than the big screen titles.

    • @JemyM

      @@FIXTREME I had not until you mention them but there seems to be 3 that are all in the Kahvibreak j2me collection; "Driver: Vegas" by Glu Mobile (2005) seems to be a sequel to Driv3r and in the era I was referring to. Driver L.A: Undercover (2007) and Driver: San Francisco (2011) by Gameloft seems to be later eras.

      @FIXTREME 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@JemyM I had L.A Undercover on my old UT Starcom SuperSlice, back in the Virgin Mobile days. Those games convinced me that Rockstar should have attempted a J2ME GTA game, maybe as a promotional tie in for the Stories games.

      I lamented the death of beat em ups during that era & they stayed dead up until Streets of Rage 4. That's a long time. There were many times to try & revive it but they all flopped for some reason. God Hand & Urban Reign were beat em up masterpieces but for some reason the ps2 era hated the beat em up.

    • @JemyM
      @JemyM 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@HereticHydra: I was a major fan of those and missed them hard. I finished several with a lot of quarters in the Arcades. Then I spent much of the early y2k playing through every one of them systematically on emulators. I think Castle Crashers and Sacred Citadel were the first of the new generation of Beat Em Ups but Streets of Rage 4 really nailed it. So happy that genre is back. Spent a good chunk of yesterday playing Mayhem Brawler with a friend.

    I always bounced off of the original Tomb Raider until last year, when I finally forced myself to come to grips with the control. Understanding (finally) that it's effectively a continuation of the gameplay in Prince of Persia/Flashback/Blackthorne made it much more palatable. It demands a lot of precision from the player, but ended up being a lot more fun than I was expecting.

    Some of the early Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games got mostly-2D versions on the Game Boy Advance. "Mostly" because the skaters themselves are 3D, and the stages are isometric but made of 2D tiles. The first THPS that I ever played was one of these, and they translated it so well to 2D that when I finally played the real 3D game months later, I already had a working knowledge of the controls and stage layouts.

    Such a fantastic idea for an episode, and a narrow time period where consoles were 3D but handhelds were 2D. Good times. I really u hope u find more examples (like Resident Evil/Gaiden) I'd love a part 2! Sláinte from Ireland 🍻

    That Virtua Fighter 2 for Genesis is actually very impressive on its own. The Shadow/Highlight color mode is so well implemented, and the colors, in general, look good-no dithering mess like in other later Genesis games. The 3D floor is also pretty unique. I always forget that game exists; maybe it fell into obscurity against the real VF2. Nobody really wanted a 2D VF2 at the time. I think SEGA should have released another SVP chip game instead of this.

    Music not playing constantly in my opinion is one of the great aspects of the Tomb Raider and something I think more games should do.

    During the 2000's there was a metric ton of 2D demakes of 3D games for old mobile phones, if you take a look at the massive library of J2ME games that came out you'll find dozens of adaptations of big popular titles of the time, and some are even good. Although not every game was 2D since later down the line many phones were able to run primitive 3D graphics so there's also a bunch of games that look like early PS1 titles, some being wildly ambitious for the hardware like an adaptation of Devil May Cry 3 or one of the DS Castlevanias that got a straight up port.

    Tomb Raider on GBC was one of the first GBC games I played, besides Pokémon Blue. My cousin gave me his GBC in 99 that'd been thrown repeatedly and run over by a car...TWICE! (He was known to be a bit volatile lol) It was scratched up, missing the start button (a paper clip worked for that), etc. Still works to this day! That menu and music was a crazy blast from the past. First TR game I ever played at the time. I bought TR3 for PC a couple years later and couldn't even beat the first level (it also ran like molasses on my family's PC...tbf I was also trash at most games and never beat the GBC TR either lol.
