my biggest gripe is the fact that Mr. Bones has no checkpoints, no lives, no continues. leaving you to start all over from the level you were at if you get a game over.
The game's bizarre story and memorable main character are also what a player would be curious to see more of, even if the gameplay is slogging. It feels like it was cursed with rental difficulty.
Pretty much all games have you start the stage you died on from the beginning. None of the levels last longer than 5 minutes, so it's really not the end of the world.
That einhander reference was a trully deep cut. I bought that game on actual store shelves due to my love if square. I wasnt a huge shooter fan, but low and behond, that game had me so addicted i cant even describe it. Something about the gloomy nature of the game mixed with the idea of a lone individual eradicating an entire planets army really struck a cord in me. I could beat that game on the hardest difficulty without dying once. And remember, i wasnt a fan of shooters. Took me MONTHS of constant playing to become a REAL einhander! Havent ever enjoyed a shooter like that again ever. Edit: on a side note, when programmers for the game were asked if they would ever make a sequel in the year 2010 or so, they answered "are there people who actually want one?". Obviously, they did not share the same love as i had for their own game.
Man I remember growing up playing Top Gun at my uncle's house. I remember how happy I was when I was finally able to land that damn jet. Thanks for the nostalgia.

Top Gun was a lot fun, especially with a big crew of friends. Seeing how they crashed, everyone spill their sodas in laughter. And then that one guy landing it, the ooohhs, and the ahhhhss.
The only reason I was able to tolerate Streetwise until completion was unlocking (buying) all the Shadows Fall songs, then at least it had a fun soundtrack.
Theres one thing you didn't mention about the quick time event minigame in balan: if you get anything that isn't an excellent, not only do you not get the statue but in order to retry you have to beat THE ENTIRE WORLD INCLUDING THE BOSS FOR THE MINIGAME TO RESPAWN

That Day One game looks like a dollar store knockoff of Armada on the Dreamcast. And that game's already kind of low budget but at least it's kinda fun.
Mr.Bones gets elevated from crappy to entertaining simply because of how likeable the protagonist is and how trippy and odd the entire ride can be, I love it! Buuuut you certainly wouldnt be wrong in saying its extremely flawed outside those peramiters lol.

But who was the competitor, Square Enix? They're not even close to the same level. And they've been out of the console business for yonks, so Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft wouldn't be a competitor to them. Unless Yuji Naka's real enemy was himself all along.

In fact, they are the second most profitable Japanese game company worldwide, and the 13th overall. Sega, despite the monumental heights they have fallen from, are the 6th most profitable in Japn, 21st worldwide. So they're generally in the same ballpark, alongside Bandai Namco, Konami, and Nexon. Yeah, a surprise that Capcom doesn't even have half of Sega's revenue, but in this wild world of Yuji Naka (maybe) being a double agent taking the fall, anything is possible.
I did get some enjoyment out of the game! There were a number of baffling decisions, though. Could have been like 10 costumes with polished traits to each. All characters needed to be able to jump. The keys needed to be removed. It just needed some guidance and direction. Some of the costumes are almost completely useless. - I was looking forward to the game when it was announced! Played demo... and waited to pick up a $5 clearance copy.
Joe channeling his inner E3 2008 self is must-see. :) Also- stay for the Urban Reign shoutout. I do have to admit that I’ll always have a soft spot for Top Gun NES. It’s one of those “I know it’s bad, but nostalgia!” cases for me.

I hope I'm not the only one who can't unhear the fart sound effect of the sack hitting the table in the intro. LOL! Well besides random nonsense, your videos are always the most cozy, relaxing, and strangely informative of any gaming related channel.
I love Mr. Bones, though I will not deny its jankiness. One minor note, though-- there's a level select in the Options menu, and once you pass a stage you can always retry at the one you died at, you just have to navigate there every time. Which is admittedly annoying.
Right, which is why I didn't complain that you had to start the game over from scratch. Still if you can retry a level endlessly like that, why bother resetting to the title screen after you die?
@@GameSack My mistake, my attention was split between listening to this episode and trying to put my newborn to sleep! And you're right, it's just bad game design to not let the player restart immediately from the game over screen. I just thought it was worth mentioning since it wasn't immediately apparent to me when I played it back in the day, and I was originally under the impression that you had to start the whole game from scratch if you died. Great episode as always!

Mr. Bones looks like one of those games EGM or your average game magazine would be all over, hyping up as a killer app, then it comes out, it sucks, and you never hear about it again.
Spyborgs was actually designed much differently at the beginning of its dev cycle. It was goofier, with little "saturday morning" comic style interludes between the levels, like you were watching a TV show. I think the publisher pushed the devs to make it more "grounded" and less silly.

As someone who's played the TaleSpin Sega Genesis game, it's decent if you manage to get a second player to play as Kit Cloudkicker, Baloo's adopted son and trusted navigator. Kit is smaller and more nimble than Baloo and he can use his slingshot to hit enemies from far away. However, playing as Kit in the flight stages is a bad idea, as the computer controls the Sea Duck since Kit is flying outside it on his air foil. The computer has the tendency to miss power-ups, specifically the health ones that keep the Sea Duck from taking too much damage. TaleSpin on the Genesis is at least playable compared to Fantasia, but it's clearly not one of the Genesis' more memorable Disney games. (Castle Of Illusion, Quackshot, Aladdin, The Lion King, and others are more in that category.) It's sad that TaleSpin in general had games that were mediocre at best; the NES game was an okay-ish shoot-em' up that's probably Capcom's weakest Disney game... and it's still considered to be the best game based on the show. The TurboGrafix-16 game is seen as the bottom of the barrel, as despite having better graphics than the Genesis game, it suffers from atrocious controls, severely faulty hit detection, and all-around uninspired gameplay, flaws it shares with the Darkwing Duck TurboGrafx-16 game.
Mr Bones weeds out the non musically inclined. Thanks Ronnie Montrose! Ive always liked the concept more than the execution. Some stages are frustrating beyond tolerable. Some are fun. Needed a sequel on Dreamcast to iron out the bs. Still play it every October, cheat, level select style.

It made so much stuff right compared to the Castlevania games on PS2 that is really sad for the things it did wrong
@@l3rvn0 Even thou Lords of Shadow takes inspiration from God of War, it's the best selling Castlevania game. Metroid and Castlevania are difficult to translate well in full 3d without losing their identity.
Unpopular opinion, but despite it's story, lack of exploration, and such I actually liked "Other M." Using the sideways remote style didn't bother me, because the game seemed built around that limitation, and compensated for it with it's clever camera angles and such. I think that third person 3D Metroid style should be rexplored again someday, and improved on.
Metroid Other M isn't a bad game at all, it's a lot better that the Castlevania games on PS2, but it's the worst game in the series, and for no reason The hardest part that was making the transition from 2D to 3D they got right, it's so much closer to the 2D games compared to what Konami did with Castlevania, but they had to screw up the exploration and add unnecessary gimmicks to the gameplay... oh well
Games were harder then so I think that was often used to hide the fact that there wasn't really much substance. Today they are usually easier but this time sheer size is frequently used to hide the shallowness and mediocrity. Overall I think our lives are still richer for their existence but that turd pool has turned into an ocean.

Just a few years earlier in Metroid prime 3 you were already able to play with the nunchuck plugged into the Wii remote and therefore control with the joystick on the nunchuck and still aim with the motion controls of the Wii remote. I mean there is no good reason to make players have to hold the Wii remote on its side and use a d-pad in a 3D environment and then keep going back and forth between holding it on its side and pointing it forwards to aim They could have easily done better I just don't understand why they would have designed it that way. This is the first time I've actually been made it aware of how bad the controls in Metroid Other M are.
I'm researching that idea. Came up with some companies, but man finding good games among them is tough. Found a few, maybe about half an episode's worth so far, lol.

I have a great show idea! I ran into this with my Retrotink 5x! "Old games with high resolution modes" Setting up my tink and realizing, for example, some Saturn games hhave 480i mode etc, any olkd systems that havbe higher res modees for old sstems like PS1, if any, Saturn, all thta generation. Olderr generations probaly don thave it? but then again, snes has some 384p iirc sometimes, sonic 2 player had the interlaced 2 player mode. WOUld be handy info a nd col video especially for us peopple setting up out Tinks the higher resolution really maters

I think whenever you make a Part 2 of this, it's important to differentiate between bad games *developed* by great companies and ones *published* by great companies. Several of the games in this video weren't actually developed by the companies at all, they just published them. I think it's more interesting to see legitimately bad games made by the company itself, rather than crappy games made by random companies that really have nothing to do with the company that published them.
Problem is, the very large majority of big names do not develop their own games, even back in the day. So I had to go with publishers just for recognition. I thought that would be obvious over the course of the episode, but a few people have been confused.
@@GameSack There's definitely bad games you could drudge up from a few of the companies that they actually developed, though. Like some of the bad Final Fantasy games, for example. I see what you mean, though, it's hard to find a giant list of them. Maybe in the future it would just be good to list the actual developer when you talk about each game.

As someone who's played the TaleSpin Sega Genesis game, it's decent if you manage to get a second player to play as Kit Cloudkicker, Baloo's adopted son and trusted navigator. Kit is smaller and more nimble than Baloo and he can use his slingshot to hit enemies from far away. However, playing as Kit in the flight stages is a bad idea, as the computer controls the Sea Duck since Kit is flying outside it on his air foil. The computer has the tendency to miss power-ups, specifically the health ones that keep the Sea Duck from taking too much damage. TaleSpin on the Genesis is at least playable compared to Fantasia, but it's clearly not one of the Genesis' more memorable Disney games. (Castle Of Illusion, Quackshot, Aladdin, The Lion King, and others are more in that category.) It's sad that TaleSpin in general had games that were mediocre at best; the NES game was an okay-ish shoot-em' up that's probably Capcom's weakest Disney game... and it's still considered to be the best game based on the show. The TurboGrafix-16 game is seen as the bottom of the barrel, as despite having better graphics than the Genesis game, it suffers from atrocious controls, severely faulty hit detection, and all-around uninspired gameplay, flaws it shares with the Darkwing Duck TurboGrafx-16 game.
I had Mr Bones back in the day on Saturn and always remembered liking it. I played it for a bit a couple years ago and, yeah, i was wrong, lol.

Mr Bones weeds out the non musically inclined. Thanks Ronnie Montrose! Ive always liked the concept more than the execution. Some stages are frustrating beyond tolerable. Some are fun. Needed a sequel on Dreamcast to iron out the bs. Still play it every October, cheat, level select style.

@@orangeslash1667 The sad thing is that it was probably the best "3D Third Person Metroidvania" released till that point, and it may still be since there isn't much competition in the genre.
It made so much stuff right compared to the Castlevania games on PS2 that is really sad for the things it did wrong
@@l3rvn0 Even thou Lords of Shadow takes inspiration from God of War, it's the best selling Castlevania game.
Metroid and Castlevania are difficult to translate well in full 3d without losing their identity.
Looks like Mr Bones game code must contain some sort of black hole glitches.
Unpopular opinion, but despite it's story, lack of exploration, and such I actually liked "Other M." Using the sideways remote style didn't bother me, because the game seemed built around that limitation, and compensated for it with it's clever camera angles and such.
I think that third person 3D Metroid style should be rexplored again someday, and improved on.
Metroid Other M isn't a bad game at all, it's a lot better that the Castlevania games on PS2, but it's the worst game in the series, and for no reason
The hardest part that was making the transition from 2D to 3D they got right, it's so much closer to the 2D games compared to what Konami did with Castlevania, but they had to screw up the exploration and add unnecessary gimmicks to the gameplay... oh well
Games were harder then so I think that was often used to hide the fact that there wasn't really much substance. Today they are usually easier but this time sheer size is frequently used to hide the shallowness and mediocrity. Overall I think our lives are still richer for their existence but that turd pool has turned into an ocean.

I just remembered that Catastrophe Crow has happened, which Adam Butcher made a release video on his channel. He puts the itch io link in his vid description and it's playable on itch io, but no downloads.
No volume controls though, so have to control volume on your computer.

Just a few years earlier in Metroid prime 3 you were already able to play with the nunchuck plugged into the Wii remote and therefore control with the joystick on the nunchuck and still aim with the motion controls of the Wii remote. I mean there is no good reason to make players have to hold the Wii remote on its side and use a d-pad in a 3D environment and then keep going back and forth between holding it on its side and pointing it forwards to aim They could have easily done better I just don't understand why they would have designed it that way. This is the first time I've actually been made it aware of how bad the controls in Metroid Other M are.
This is going to be an interesting ep of Game Sack. & remember, even great gaming companies like Capcom & Konami had their share of misses too.
Now we need a video about great games from bad companies.
I'm researching that idea. Came up with some companies, but man finding good games among them is tough. Found a few, maybe about half an episode's worth so far, lol.

I have a great show idea! I ran into this with my Retrotink 5x! "Old games with high resolution modes" Setting up my tink and realizing, for example, some Saturn games hhave 480i mode etc, any olkd systems that havbe higher res modees for old sstems like PS1, if any, Saturn, all thta generation. Olderr generations probaly don thave it? but then again, snes has some 384p iirc sometimes, sonic 2 player had the interlaced 2 player mode. WOUld be handy info a nd col video especially for us peopple setting up out Tinks the higher resolution really maters

I think whenever you make a Part 2 of this, it's important to differentiate between bad games *developed* by great companies and ones *published* by great companies. Several of the games in this video weren't actually developed by the companies at all, they just published them. I think it's more interesting to see legitimately bad games made by the company itself, rather than crappy games made by random companies that really have nothing to do with the company that published them.
Problem is, the very large majority of big names do not develop their own games, even back in the day. So I had to go with publishers just for recognition. I thought that would be obvious over the course of the episode, but a few people have been confused.
@@GameSack There's definitely bad games you could drudge up from a few of the companies that they actually developed, though. Like some of the bad Final Fantasy games, for example. I see what you mean, though, it's hard to find a giant list of them. Maybe in the future it would just be good to list the actual developer when you talk about each game.

The controls are fine because the game was designed around it, but it could have been so much better...
