I started carnivore in early January and was doing really well for about 3 months then started feeling very tired and getting excruciating leg and/or thigh cramps at night. I had been taking LMNT electrolytes every day and occasional magnesium. Unfortunately I still got occasional bad cramps at night. I fell off the carnivore wagon a few weeks ago when I had friends to stay for the weekend and have struggled to get back on it. I must admit the leg cramp issue was also a factor. Your video is so timely as I decided if I’m to restart carnivore I need to make sure both my magnesium and potassium levels are good and ordered some new supplements a few days ago. I hadn’t realised that Vit D3 can also affect/deplete - I have been taking 4000iu (plus a K2 MK7 supplement) most days - so thanks for flagging this. I felt so much better on carnivore initially so, armed with my new supplements, I’m going to restart asap.
Your experience completely mirrors my own; down to the falling off the wagon when we had company in town! Very timely video, indeed! Cranking up the magnesium and potassium...already feeling better. Excited that this will alleviate the restless legs/cramping and lethargy.
Eat a healthy well formulated diet low in red meat and animal products high in natural foods like healthy vegetables, small portions of nuts, seeds and some portions of fruits. Small portions of food is the real answer to achieving your goals. Walk every day with a goal of 8,000 to 10,000 steps. I allow myself some plain yogurt with a mixture of fruit for dessert before I stop eating for the day usually around 6-7:00 PM. The key takeaway is to eat small portions. It is working great for me and I don't feel deprived. No leg or muscle cramps eating this way. Good luck!
Thank you thank you THANK YOU. week 7 totally carnivore and I got the exact same problems. I was like wonderful. Finally found a diet at age 56 and now this. I thought I honestly got a disease nightly both legs extreme Charlie horses. And they HURT. PLUS fatigue like a fugue state. Bless you. I am ordering those supplements ASAP.
Well, as always, you are very informative. I’ve begun to get these terrible cramps of the back of my legs excruciating pain. Dr. Chaffee suggested water that you might be dehydrated, but your video has been helpful. I’ve been taken 10,000 units of D3 myself and this just started
Thank you so much for your knowledge!!! My vitamin d was low and they had me on a 50000iu a week. Now i know why i was getting cramps and fatigue! You are such a great help.
Thank you, perfect timing as well. My D3 level was high,, 73, even my doctor told me to slow down on the D3 supplements, I was taking 5000 is daily, cramping has been really bad. I am going to follow what you suggested. This makes such good sense. I stopped my carnivore journey because of the cramping a couple of weeks ago. I restarted back two days ago and the cramping was ramping up again. THANK YOU for the information.
I have been waking up with leg cramps the past few nights. I drink 2 re-lutes or LMNTs per day and take 2 magnesium Glycinates every evening but I also have been taking Vitamin D3 with K2 and so glad I watched your video. I think I’m going to quit the d3/k2 for a bit because that has to be what it is since I’m already supplementing with the magnesium and the electrolytes on the relyte and LMNT should have plenty of potassium. Wish me luck because you are right. No fun!! They are horrible. Thank you so much for the information.
There is a pattern in the comments… lots of people high dosing the vit d3. My calf cramps have hit as Autumn comes and I switched from sunshine to 4000iu +k2. I’m to drop to 1000 for a bit and see what happens. Was already taking lots of sodium, potassium and various good types of magnesium.
I put epson salt with magnesium and well doc said mine was a little high so she made me stop. But i take 50k every week of Vit. D i stay around 60/70 and only had that one time with cramping. But everyone is differant. I love 40 pounds in 3 months. So im happy at my wieght loss.
@JennyMitich As to why Inuit don't take D supplements. Inuit eat a lot of cold water fish which is high in D. Another commenter mentioned sardines... a good choice for D. Also our food sourcing often does not contain all the nutrients available in paleo times and we do not eat nose to tail(especially liver). A varied animal diet is a good idea. MANY factors can affect cramping and I would advise starting with more water and then perhaps try one additional supplement gradually at a time. Too much of one supplement can throw off balance in multiple others. Stress is a non dietary factor in many imbalances that is quite pervasive for us, so mind/body needs balance too. Supplements can be advantageous in the case of diseases/conditions developed over the years that need targeting. Like thyroid, where iodine can help accelerate healing and is lacking in food sources due to soil depletion which affects both plant and animal agriculture. Thyroid issues are often an issue with fatigue and iodine(often deleted in our food sources) can help the thyroid... but as is often the case with supplementing only one vitamin, it will need increases in selenium and salt as well. One commenter mentioned almonds which provide a LOT of selenium(which can easily become too much), helpful if supplementing with iodine. Low selenium can also have cramps and fatigue as symptoms. BUT be aware almonds also contain very high levels of oxalate... not a good idea. If you are not low in a particular vitamin/nutrient then supplementing one, just as insurance, can lead to a cascade of imbalances. Small, cautious steps. on balance, in my opinion, carnivore is a far simpler and more health advantageous way of eating than any other.
I also started getting major cramps at night 1.5 yrs into carnivire .ty for doing the research I've been wanting to look into which supplements to take
Thx, been supplementing with D3 but decided to start doing 8000 IUs and then I started having to and half cramps on and off. So, I'm going to increase my potassium and magnesium and see if this resolves the situation. Much appreciated advice and enjoy your channel, God bless you and your family. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!! The first time I did carnivore the muscle cramps were always a big mystery to me, and I truly started to think it was a flaw in the diet... this makes so much sense. And this time around I've had no cramps cause I'm not supplementing vitamin d
Nice! Yea, I think the D supplementation is the key, within the context of a carnivore diet. You're not getting as much magnesium from your diet when you are strict carnivore, which is fine if youre not supplementing with really high levels of D. I dont think you would have the same effect if you got the D from the sun.
Apparently it's important to understand the elemental magnesium content of your supplements. I was getting cramps despite supplementing with magnesium. My magnesium pills only had 150 mg elemental per 500 mg of mag glycinate.
I had this after a supplement gave me diarrhea for weeks and I was hit with severe dehydration symptoms. I ended up with a major electrolyte deficiency and it was debilitating.
Thanks Jenny. Great advice. Mine are generally abdominal (muscle) cramps. I’m so hydrated it doesn’t make conventional sense. Either way, I now have more advice on how to rectify the only issue I’ve had on Carnivore. God Bless you!
Magnesium, potassium and zinc compound in half litre of water to drink during the day. I take this a couple of times a week, but, I live in a sunny climate with helps.
Take mg first for a week then start adding potassium in the AM in your coffee or add to your first meal then take your Mg with your evening meal. Do not take together as potasium can become prioritized and kick mg into the urine they use the same pathway. Search mineral wheel for more info. Lastly i found i had methylation issues and started taking methylfolate which is the bio avail version of B9. Address my issues of cramping and severe anxiety.
Not for me. My fatigue after 17 months on carnivore is bad. I get sun, take D with K and magnesium. Eat raw liver even once every week or two. I can’t figure it out. Started lugols too. So frustrating for me😢
Jenny is a genius. I been having these Charlie horse cramps in my calf muscles but I knew I was taking potassium and magnesium supplements but I just went to my “potassium bottle and found it was a b1 bottle. Yes imma domeass and grabbed a real magnesium bottle and immediately took 2 caps and jumped into a hot bath of epsom salt to soak that magnesium in
I follow Stephanieketo and she talks alot about the carnivore diet she's mainly keto but she says carnivore can be dangerous, People always use the Redmond salt on their meat a lot or salt in general and use too much sodium and that creates an imbalance of potassium and then on that same side of the coin when you create an imbalance of potassium you also create an imbalance of magnesium, From what I understand potassium is a more important especially on the carnivore diet, it's more important than sodium, The key is to basically get the electrolytes in balance potassium #1 then magnesium then sodium
And my doctor always for years said my blood work showed extreme low vit d. So I took 60,000 every Monday morning only. Anything over that can shut down one’s kidneys. Again. Thank you
Over 60k shuts down kidneys? I know people who take 100k iu/day to battle a type of candida (fungal infection transmitted by the bloodstream) and they're fine. I think you can waste VitD by taking too much, as it just gets peed out and not used, but I don't believe you can truly OD on it.
Someone lied to you! 60,000 is like being 60 minutes in the sun - have you been out in the sun over an hour before? Did your kidneys shut down? Doctors are LIARS!
Almost 10 months carnivore here, at about the 6 month point for me i was getting foot and leg cramps when i went to bed, spent couple weeks trying to figure it out. Learned that i was using to much salt for both my meals, so i cut out the salt for one meal, and increased my water and the cramps went away, haven't had them since! Only thing im dealing with now and this actually just started 2 weeks ago when it started getting warm/hot outside, btw i also live in Chicago but southwest suburbs ;) i been lethargic, my hydration has been the same. I work a night shift (8pm-4am) so i eat when i get home in the morning, and then eat a little before i go to work, this lethargy i know was low and no salt for my 2nd meal, and im discovering im not eating enough, nor getting enough fat. Never did carnivore in the summer so its a new thing for me, whats interesting is im only lethargic when im at work, and i still have my physical strength but when im moving around as its manual labor (work in a warehouse) i just have no energy regardless of my electrolytes and water intake. So something im trying to sort out, i also think my vit D is low as well, i do take vitD with K2, lastly i think what i need to start doing is go back outside and start running again in the forest preserve trail to get some sun.
Thank you🙏 I'm pretty strict about what constitutes a Carniovore. I wasn't a Carniovore until I finally stopped drinking coffee. Coffee is a plant and caffeine is a neurotoxin. I have been drinking 8-10 cups of coffee a day for about 30 years. It took a year to get rid of coffee, only then the uric acid crystals were gone from my body. Since then, I haven't needed an electrolyte supplement. Coffee is also a problem in Carniovore due to strong physical and social dependence. Coffee consumes our body and forms uric acid crystals, it has no positive health effects.
True, it's also a vaso constrictor. it restricts blood flow in your veins so of course to all your organs and can cause mini clots in the fine capillaries of the brain.....all for a buzz....sheeeesh! (Not to mention the fact thats its such an addictive drug, that alone should be a red flag to any clear thinker!)
My Dr has me on a mega dose of Vitamin D. I added Magnesium Glyconate but still had bad leg cramps in the early AM. Will add the potassium. Thanks for the video. Cheers!
Hello! It takes some time for the magnesium stores to build back up, I have been supplementing now for about 5 weeks and the cramping is 99% gone. I still have a tiny bit from time to time, hoping that will be resolve soon :)
These are the exact symptoms I've been dealing with except I'm not on a vit D supplement. I've been taking a high quality mineral supplement so assumed I had this covered
Thanks Jenny, I have been taking the Mag but might up it as the night cramps were bad but settled down now getting niggly again. What's weird is they used to be the calf and now they seem to run up the front ... go figure.
Look up piriformus (sp?) muscle. It is possible some of your leg cramps irritated the nerves that go to this muscle, (or another muscle). I am not a doctor, but have had referred pain due to similar problems. I suppose it could also be the same type of thing and be related to the sciatica nerve, but, again I am not a doctor and I am not sure what all nerves/muscles are connected and which ones might cause pain where. At leasted it is a place to start your research. Might want to get some blood tests done as well and while you are there, you can show your doctor what is going on where... Good luck!
Hi @jennymitich I have been on carnivore for 2 months. The first two weeks were wonderful. Full of energy. All was well. Then, all of a sudden, my legs began to feel like lead. It has not stopped since. I do feel moderately tired, but my legs are unbelievably heavy. I mean, literally like LEAD. I'm 5'9", 124 lb. I can only do about 1200 to 1500 calories per day and then I'm stuffed. I take two magnesium glycinate pills each night. I walk in the sun at least 4,000 steps each day. I generally drink about 50 to 60 oz of water per day, including one packet of plain LMNT supplement. I am very concerned about my heavy legs. Have you ever heard of this? Thank you!
Hello! That is strange, I can't say that I have heard that one before. I would up the electrolytes and water for sure. And I would also up the fat to up the calories. 1200-1500 is not enough food. Also, fat is the fuel so you need to make sure you are eating enough of it. You could also try incorporating some vegetables, just to see if that improves your symptoms.
@@JennyMitich Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! I hope I find someone that has experienced this. It's kind of scary. Your advice is good, and I certainly appreciate it. I'm afraid to add in vegetables because I don't want the digestive issues to come back. But I will do my best to eat a little more and implement the other things you said. Thank you, again! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@SoGrateful4You you’re very welcome! The reason I suggest some carbs is I’m curious if it’s still some keto flu/sugar withdrawal. If it is, some carbs would clear it up quickly. Otherwise, if you’re eating really lean meats, upping the fat should help. You need the fat 👍🏻
@@JennyMitich I see. Thank you. I'm wondering if you can still have keto flu even if you were on low-to-no sugar and low-to-no highly processed foods for years before starting carnivore?🤔 The only sugars I really consumed came through a few fruits and vegetables. My main fruits were blue berries and strawberries. Veggies were cucumbers, celery, broccoli... Thanks again for your thoughts and ideas. I will try to add more fat and calories. I definitely need to get to the bottom of this. It's such a weird and troubling feeling...
@@SoGrateful4You the only other thing I could think of is if you were eating a lot of high oxalate fruits and vegetables, you may be detoxing from that. You could read Toxic Superfoods from Sally Norton, that could be helpful. Otherwise, perhaps it has nothing to do with the diet at all, and it could be some other root cause issue that is coming to the surface now that you’ve cleared out everything except for the meat and animal products.
Peeps....get early morning sun, despite the sun's applination....you're still getting A/B sunlight, as light constantly reflects and refracts off the clouds, etc. Get 10 mins of sun...walk around your lawn to ground yourselves....the f. End.
My husband and I have been on carnivore for a week and we both are low energy. Also my bowel movements are almost nothing lol, just a very small amount.
If you are taking 10,000 ii of d3 daily, this may be too much. It could over stimulate your brain and affect sleep. 5k daily should be plenty with k2. That could also be the reason you are tired.
Thank you!! ❤I have been having leg/foot cramps also, almost every night! Ive been taking electrolytes but probably not enough, so,I will try these, hopefully I will also have good results, with less and maybe no cramps while sleeping!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@martinsvensson6884 You are wrong. I FEEL BETTER AND SLEEP BETTER. You do you and I will do me. I ate Dr Westmans protocol phase 1 and 2 for 5 years. It works and didn't have all of the issues that everyone keeps asking about on Carnivore. It is great for an elimination diet and to heal somethings but not everyone needs to stay on it long term.
I also stopped carnivore today after 2 yrs for carnivore. I had some organic blueberries, dark chocolate, and broccoli with Rib eye and feel much better today .
@Panji2000 I am glad you feel better too. I plan to stick with 20g carbs for the next three months to get some extra weight off and then move up to 40g and let the last bit come off slowly hoping to see where my carb threshold is to maintain.
it's all about electrolytes, i had to force myself to increase the salt i use on my food because i was so used to reduced sodium because of all the fear mongering about salt. now i drink an electrolyte mix twice per day and make sure my food is properly salted to taste and limit my coffee intake which can also dehydrate and give some muscle cramps especially if you're doing OMAD and you go for a bite of food after a 16+ hour fast and your jaw cramps up lol
Omgosh talk about timing! I've been carnivore 6 months and I love it. However my leg cramps have been acting up and I woke up last night with a horrible Charlie horse in my leg. I had no idea about the D3 and magnesium though. I take magnesium on and off but I'll definitely start being more consistent and add the potassium as well and see if that helps. Thank so much for the video!
Been toying with my minerals/electrolytes to find my personal balance. When I take two Magnesium complex (one at morning and night), I get diarrhea. Got leg cramps really bad last night. Ate a half teaspoon of pink salt and cramps faded within an hour. It actually tasted sweet. I'm guessing this sweet taste is my body saying "you NEED this!" So don't rule out sodium if you are taking supplements.
My biggest problem is fatigue. I take LMNT also and that helped a lot with leg cramps. On occasion still get some cramping. Not a hard core Carniviour maybe a Ketovior? I put your supplements in my wish list and will have to give them a try. So if I get a bottle of each and use them up do you think I would notice a difference or will it take longer. Willing to try it as fatigue really sucks. All I want to do is sleep. Thanks for the information .
I find it strange that this diet is sooooo good for you, yet you have to supplement with all these vitamins and minerals. Obviously something is lacking in the diet. I honestly think the diet may be for some that have health issues but I do not think it is overall healthy. The "carnivore experts" can tell you to get rid of fruits and veggies but the amount of water in plants is ridiculous and is probably why people that eat veggies in a balanced diet don't experience the kind of side effects I have been finding on the carnivore diet. I have experienced fatigue, loss of sleep and major dehydration from being on the carnivore diet. I will start introducing fruits back into my diet for hydration. It amazes me how people don't really know anything, even doctors, when it comes to diet. Everything finds balance. From my experience on carnivore and from research, dehydration is a major side effect of the carnivore diet. I have never had to be aware of my electrolytes before carnivore and I work outside in the hot sun! I would just drink plenty of water and I was fine. Now on carnivore, I dehydrate in hours and then it takes half a day to rehydrate. Terrible.
"All these supplements" you mean two? Magnesium and potassium 😂 maybe you should do some research before starting an actual diet then you'd know where you're going wrong because it's clearly obvious you dont have a clue what you're doing, I can guarantee you're under eating and not drinking enough water.
On carnivore diet for barrier on and off been on for about 5-10 weeks took a couple of vitamin C tablets now I feel absolutely horrible knowing energy do you know why
Thank you, I also use lmnt and eat good meat with leg cramps and these puppies are wicked. Going to keep a food log, and if nothing comes of that, will add these supplements❤
Just noticed you have two types of magnesium so I watched your video again. Does it make a difference which Magnesium? Any recommended one to get me started? Appreciate your imput.
i experienced severe muscle recovery problems (1 week sore after 2 sets of pushups) after doing keto for a few months. couldnt do any training or sport anymore because of fatigue and lactic burning in the muscle. now i introduced carbs (potatoe and fruit) back in my diet. getting a bit better but still not normals. any recommandations?
That is a great question. I know for me, I didn't have full power at the gym until about a year into carnivore. But I also had very young twins, so maybe part of that was pure exhaustion LOL. I think those effects would fade pretty quickly after you introduced the carbs though, so there might be something else at play. I would say try meat and fruit diet, that may help.
Can you come up with a list of common supplements or foods /drinks that can sap magnesium? I don't supp with D3 or K , but have the extreme fatigue and cramps in my calves and toes randomly , mostly at night. I do drink one caffeine coffee a day. Otherwise lionish carnivore. Thanks for your time
@@JennyMitich I have the same question. I don't take supplements except for an electrolyte mix. I had wondered what would tap my magnesium resources to cause the cramps and dry mouth/eyes. From what Prof. Bart Kay and other Carni Drs. say about being in ketosis, if you don't cycle out often, it will tax your electrolyte stores from your kidneys. Have you heard of this? Sounds like important information!
Hello! Thank you so much! I think I linked it in this video, but I use Naturewise, I was taking 10000 ius per day, but now I do 5000 ius per day, plus K2, plus magnesium.
If you must supplement in order to not have cramps, insomnia, heart palpitations and fatigue (the most common issues people have on this diet, including myself) then it means the diet is not sustainable. It's as simple as that. That's exactly what carnivores say about the vegans. I have been on the carnivore diet for 4 months but i was absolutely miserable and then i switcted to Saladino's animal based and everything is perfect now. But carnivores are too proud and dogmatic to admit they are wrong. Strict carnivore is great for people who are seriously ill or sick , or for people who want to reset their health and metabolism. But the diet is just not sustainable long term. And i hear MANY stories just like mine, of people who added a small amount of fruit, dairy and honey and all the issues went away. Bottom line: if you must supplement, then your diet is sub optimal.
Hello! I disagree. There are plenty of reasons to supplement. For example, if you have a CIRS diagnosis, you will need to supplement regardless of your dietary philosophy. Hashimotos, anyone that has had bariatric surgery, etc. If you want to supplement, do so. Now, for me, the muscle cramping was due to high doses of vitamin D without magnesium supplementation. I take D because i live in northern latitudes and we don't get a ton of sun.
@@JennyMitichfrom the outset let me just say I’m on blood pressure meds with diuretic. Understanding that may be an issue I use two packets of electrolytes per day. 500 mg Magnesium Glycinate, fully chelated, high absorption, one tablet before bed, potassium 200mg, b complex, vitaE. The leg pain and Charlie horses are getting horrible the past week. I started the carnivore diet 4 weeks ago with the first 3 doing very well. All leg pains disappeared but now they’re back with a vengeance. What am I missing? Any ideas?
100% I have been on carnivore for 3 months and never ever felt so bad. Cramps, pain all over my joints, lack of sleep, and although bloating and heart burn gone... Have zero energy and ofc I supplement....i no longer believe in the carnivore dogma anymore 😢
Smoothed down to 20g keto but never fully converted to fat burning, or couldn't eat enough fat. In 4 weeks I thought I had MS, heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer and statin myopathy all in one. Ate 2 potatoes and some popcorn -150g - and was reborn overnight. 70 years old, and probably slow to adapt, but won't go below 200g again. This pear tastes so good right now.
Great video thanks!! Im only 3 weeks in and woke up with an "almost" charloe horse this morning. Ordered the supplements. My question is, how would one solve this with diet alone? I dont want to end up like a vegetarian supplementing for this and that
Supplements arent bad. But if you want to do this through food, just take a tablespoon of mustard, that stops muscle cramping instantly. Otherwise, just get D from the sun and magnesium from food sources.
I failed on Keto and Carnivore and Plant Based. Now I eat everything but I make sure to control my portions. For instance I wake up and have 2 cups of coffee and a little cream during the morning. I go out and walk around 7,000 steps. Before noon I have oatmeal with cinnamon, ground flax, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and some blueberries and a little almond milk. That holds me over till 3:00 pm. I then have a small saled of arugula with Olive oil and a portion of cottage cheese. Dinner is Broiled Salmon, small sweet potato and asparagus. I drink plenty of water. Kiwi for snack. I feel great. Am losing 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per week. And I really enjoy eating everything with strict portion control. Its working for me. I just couldn't live eating all meat, chicken, and lots of fat and missing out on all the wonderful varieties of bread, fruits and vegetables. The secret to my success is portion control. No Charley horses, weakness, dizziness upon standing, or any of the other crazy symptoms I experienced on keto/carnivore. I feel totally alive now and credit portion control for giving me my life back.Friday nights I have 2 pieces of pizza and a cold beer. Life is Good! Cheers everyone!
Congratulations, you've just discovered that the only thing that's driving fat loss is energy balance. Energy absorbed vs energy used by your body. There's no magic to any diet, you can eat whatever you want , and if you are able to use more energy than you absorb from your foods, you are going to lose fat. Always. Until you die.
That is beautiful that you are able to eat some if everything and in an intuitive way - the dream! I wish I could eat carbs in moderation, but I have found that I am definitely addicted to the sugars… once I have any - I end up getting of control and in no time sick from it. For me zero carbs is the only way I feel consistently healthy. I have to treat it like alcohol addiction. You are very blessed to be able to dabble 💕
Ive been carnivore for 576 days. Im using exactly the same Vit K, D and Im deeply exhausted and muscle cramps are unbearable. I've done the K amd Mg and no help. I have to keep going and see if a longer term more than 4 months may help. Thanks.
Hello! Maybe stop the Vitamin D and just do the Magnesium and Potassium. Also, it could be something else entirely. What's your average protein intake for the day?
Make an enzyme recipe for us please. I recommend Magnesium Tartrate, Potassium Chloride, and Sodium Chloride: easily found. No sweetener. Maybe cocoa for a "is this mixed" agent.
To get my potassium in I just get the original, No Salt, sodium free and it is pure potassium. I just put it with a small amount of water and take a shot.
Hello! It took about 3 weeks to fully go away. It has come back a couple times since, but it was when I hadnt drank enough water. I made sure to hydrate better the next day and it was good again :)
Hello! Great question. Like I said in the video, I supplement with D in the winter because I want to keep my levels high. Because of the D supplementation, my magnesium stores became depleted, which in turn depleted my potassium. Now that it is spring, I have stopped D supplementation and have been able to lower the amount of potassium and magnesium as well. Once its summer, I doubt I will need those either.
@@JennyMitich is there any supplementation given to the Inuits where they live mostly on Ice,mostly winter?where fish was the only food they ate,and they're great..hmmm,something smells fishy...

Your body depletes electrolytes when you aren’t eating carbs. Carbs make you retain water which is where the minerals are. You can get a lot from meat only but most need a little more because there’s only so much you can eat. We don’t need to eat vitamins. We get it all in our diet. Minerals are different.
I don't have keg cramps typically, but I do get abdominal muscle cramps when I don't take my LMNT. I struggle with good sleep and also take a mag complex that has glyycinate, threonate, and one more I can't think of. I do take vitamin d but it's only a couple times a week. Thoughts on if I might benefit from some added potassium?
Your electrolyte brand has stevia. Stevia is a diuretic and so you lose your electrolytes along with the fluid. There are many issues with ALL forms of stevia and in any amounts. A word to the wise.
@@kathleensaeva2649 my comment was to the channel. The product she held up is flavored. Most people will NOT drink unflavored. But my point is that since she has pinned high Vit D intake for not absorbing magnesium, there are other issues in what she is doing that could account for her low magnesium. If she was or is taking this brand of electrolytes, her effort to get sufficient magnesium could be thwarted or reversed by stevia. Additionally there is no balance in the unflavored (same as flavored) option: 1k mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, 60 mg magnesium. 1. How does this help the sodium/potassium pump which is a 1 to 2 ratio? 2. How is a strict carnivore going to correct the RDA from too little magnesium? The recommended two packets equals close to RDA sodium and still only 120 mg of magnesium, 2/3 deficient. Suggesting LMNT to resolve or even augment the magnesium issue is a dead end. It’s basically an expensive salt product. The company advertises paleo and keto by the way but Redmond’s and dietary potassium and magnesium is a workable option for all diets while LMNT is not. Potassium, I predict, will be the next in line for nutrient concerns. If the cell pump isn’t optimal, it doesn’t matter the diet, waste sits in an acidic state, and nothing can get repaired and regenerated. This is all readily available information. Too many seek answers from influencers which all too often is insufficient and thus wrong. Get potassium and magnesium in your diet folks. Be sure it balances with sodium intake and water, too much water is not going to be beneficial. Determine the proper ratio. And as a caveat, tap water is dead water. Water in plastic leaches plastic particles. Drinking water must be sourced from a healthy aquifer and in glass. Once upon a time, water had plenty of potassium, magnesium, sodium by the way. The levels are much lower, so get your electrolytes additionally. You’re welcome. 😉
@@ToddDouglasFox I realize your comment was to the channel. At 1:58 the LMNT packet she shows is the raw unflavored. I didn't know if you knew that one doesn't have stevia. Personally, my gut can't handle stevia and the raw unflavored LMNT made me tired. It's just not a product that works for me. I do hear you about the other things you mentioned though.

Hopefully she’s not getting any stevia. It’s good that you can’t do stevia as it affects memory as well as many other cognitive processes. Hi Jenny, thanks for the video! I take Magnesium Glycinate 200mg (Nature Made), D3 5000IU (also Nature Made) and 1-2 packets of LMNT per day and I still get Charlie horses and foot and calf cramps at night at least a few times per week. 100% carnivore. Should I also take a potassium supplement? Or maybe try the brands you are using? Thanks!
Great questions. Daily magnesium needs are 400mg, so maybe increase that. Perhaps potassium? You could also just stop supplementing the D for awhile and see if that helps. Also, what time are you taking your supplements? Are you taking them together?
I ordered all 3 but confused by the 2 mags and 1 potassium at night. Can you elaborate on which mags you took and when. I too supplement with vitd3/k2 and have been so lethargic (which feels like it defeats the point)
Hello! You can take one or the other for the magnesiums, those are just both highly absorbable forms of magnesium. I took 2 magnesium citrates at night and 1 potassium in the morning for a couple days. Then I did 1 mag at night and 1 potassium in the morning. Now that my charlie horses and fatigue have gone away Im taking a lower dose of mag to go to sleep and I take the potassium every other day in the morning.
Hello! Yes, high D3 intake can deplete magnesium. I was doing 10000 IUs, which is really high. Pair that with carnivore, where you aren't getting a large amount of magnesium, and that can drain your magnesium stores. Its not a problem if you are getting D from the sun, only with high levels of supplementation :)
Which magnesium should you take daily? I do not have cramps. I do take D3 50,000 weekly. I take it with vit.c . I have been on carnivore for 2 months. Any vitamins do you suggest on the daily? Should I get the lmnt?
I’ve had people call me a troll for honestly saying how I feel on carnivore…I feel awful, but it has been only two months. Have others experienced such weakness and fatigue two months in or more?m
@@JennyMitich Honestly I have such little appetite all I ate today was three slices of bacon and two egg yokes. At 4 pm I had about 6 Slices of corned beef…the thought of eating more makes me nauseous.
@@M.Sforza do you like fish at all? Lots of great vitamins and minerals in seafood. Also though, have you considered adding back in some vegetables or fruit? Carnivore isn’t for everyone, perhaps keto or just whole food low carb would be better for you. Why are you doing carnivore specifically?

I agree 100% Jenny! I’ve been supplementing with 300mg magnesium glycinate daily to deal with muscle cramping I experienced on carnivore while using 10000 I U vitamin D3 and 100 mcg K2. No more cramps! Kudos to you Jenny!

Hi! I’ve been eating 95% carnivore for a year now; yay me! 🥳 I’ve had the muscle cramps mildly to badly most of that time. I also have been taking 10,000 IUs of D3 + K2 for most of that time, except in warm weather when I’m outside a lot. I’m 65, and live at the same latitude as Chicago. So, winter, and not much sunlight a lot of the year. I also have been supplementing with Mg + K. My symptoms got milder when I decided to drink less water. I believe I was washing out my electrolytes. QUESTION: I believe I/we get waaay more than 10K IUs of D3 when we’re outside with skin exposed to sunlight this time of year (I have a good tan going on my hands already!), so does this increase-the-Mg/K-minerals idea apply to the sunlight exposure way of manufacturing my own D3, too? 🤔 I’ve been doing a lot of yardwork the last couple weeks. Another benefit of carnivory for me: my stamina now is awesome! And I don’t get sunburnt! 🥳
Hello! That is a great question. Sunlight is the most efficient way to make vitamin D, when we supplement we have to take a lot because only a portion of it is being absorbed. I dont think sunlight derived vitamin D has the same draining effect on our magnesium because it is being manufactured by our bodies. For me, I dont really use supplemental vitamin D in the summer because I dont need it, I am out in the sun everyday :)
Promise Jenny, magnesium deficiency. Start with 400 mgms mag oxide. If cramps persist, another 400 12 hours apart. Please try to only eat CLEAN meat, not corn fed junk. You look fantastic. I beat you though…….. Triplet sons now 47! Yikes!! Stay blessed
I appreciate this!! I have been carnivore 8 months and have been struggling with cramps off and on the whole time. The Facebook groups would tell me I shouldn’t have camps after adapting… 🙄 hello, I’m fully adapted! So I appreciate you helping me to feel normal. 😁
Yep, 9 months in and no matter what i have tried, added, removed etc around diet, coffee, supplements etc I am still rolling around on the floor 2, 3 times a night dealing with cramps. Then when doing nothing differnt I don't cramp and get lulled into thinking my issues resolved and then BANG!! 2am calf muscle trying to reach the sky.
@JennyMitich hey thanks for quick reply! I have potassium chloride powder and citrate tablets. I might try and be a bit more strategic about the timings to see if that helps. Glad I found your channel, thanks :)
@@JennyMitich I’ve been doing the potassium you recommended and got some magnesium citrate (hadn’t tried that one yet… just glycinate and malate). But I’m still cramping. I over salt all my food and drink electrolytes. Like greenygg said, during this journey they’ll go away and come back out of no where. Always in waves. 😞
Thank You . I think that’s could be my problem since I started high doses of Vit D3 and lately had lots of leg cramps at night
It could be!
Welcome back! Im glad the video was helpful :)
Good luck!

Thank you, perfect timing as well. My D3 level was high,, 73, even my doctor told me to slow down on the D3 supplements, I was taking 5000 is daily, cramping has been really bad.
Youre very welcome! Make sure you are drinking enough water in general, that can be a common cause of muscle cramping too :)
I also started getting major cramps at night 1.5 yrs into carnivire
.ty for doing the research I've been wanting to look into which supplements to take
Youre very welcome!
*toe and calf cramps . . . Just love auto correct lol
You can do it!
I also had leg cramps just a few months into carnivore and adding in electrolytes, vitamin d3, iron and vitamin c helped me immensely.
Wonderful!
Apparently it's important to understand the elemental magnesium content of your supplements.
I was getting cramps despite supplementing with magnesium.
My magnesium pills only had 150 mg elemental per 500 mg of mag glycinate.
Great point!
I had this after a supplement gave me diarrhea for weeks and I was hit with severe dehydration symptoms. I ended up with a major electrolyte deficiency and it was debilitating.
That sounds terrible!
That does help, I need to get to a sunny place in the winter
Take mg first for a week then start adding potassium in the AM in your coffee or add to your first meal then take your Mg with your evening meal. Do not take together as potasium can become prioritized and kick mg into the urine they use the same pathway. Search mineral wheel for more info. Lastly i found i had methylation issues and started taking methylfolate which is the bio avail version of B9. Address my issues of cramping and severe anxiety.
Smart! Thanks for the tips :) I also do methylated vitamins
Thank youuuuu I have only been taking the magnesium glycinate but now I will take the potassium

@@WFPBFORLIFE yea? Are you sure?
I follow Stephanieketo and she talks alot about the carnivore diet she's mainly keto but she says carnivore can be dangerous, People always use the Redmond salt on their meat a lot or salt in general and use too much sodium and that creates an imbalance of potassium and then on that same side of the coin when you create an imbalance of potassium you also create an imbalance of magnesium, From what I understand potassium is a more important especially on the carnivore diet, it's more important than sodium, The key is to basically get the electrolytes in balance potassium #1 then magnesium then sodium
Hello! I think that could be possible.
I’m right where you are talking about at month 5. Cramping every night..
Try increasing your hydration in general, that can help. Then I would focus on electrolytes, and then perhaps supplementation.
Almost 10 months carnivore here, at about the 6 month point for me i was getting foot and leg cramps when
i went to bed, spent couple weeks trying to figure it out. Learned that i was using to much salt for
both my meals, so i cut out the salt for one meal, and increased my water and the cramps
went away, haven't had them since!
Only thing im dealing with now and this actually just started 2 weeks ago when it started
getting warm/hot outside, btw i also live in Chicago but southwest suburbs ;) i been lethargic,
my hydration has been the same.
I work a night shift (8pm-4am) so i eat when i get home in the morning, and then eat a little before
i go to work, this lethargy i know was low and no salt for my 2nd meal, and im discovering im not eating
enough, nor getting enough fat. Never did carnivore in the summer so its a new thing for me,
whats interesting is im only lethargic when im at work, and i still have my physical strength but
when im moving around as its manual labor (work in a warehouse) i just have no energy regardless
of my electrolytes and water intake.
So something im trying to sort out, i also think my vit D is low as well, i do take vitD with K2, lastly
i think what i need to start doing is go back outside and start running again in the forest
preserve trail to get some sun.

I'm pretty strict about what constitutes a Carniovore.
I wasn't a Carniovore until I finally stopped drinking coffee.
Coffee is a plant and caffeine is a neurotoxin.
I have been drinking 8-10 cups of coffee a day for about 30 years.
It took a year to get rid of coffee, only then
the uric acid crystals were gone from my body.
I had no idea!! Thank you!!

When we work out in the gym and are getting muscle cramps it’s an indicator that we need more carbs.

Hmm, that is weird! I dont know why that would happen

Hello! That is strange, I can't say that I have heard that one before. I would up the electrolytes and water for sure. And I would also up the fat to up the calories. 1200-1500 is not enough food. I put your supplements in my wish list and will have to give them a try. So if I get a bottle of each and use them up do you think I would notice a difference or will it take longer. Willing to try it as fatigue really sucks. All I want to do is sleep. Thanks for the information .
Hello! It may help, I also think just increasing hydration in general is helpful
Hello! No idea, it could be so many things.
Both of the ones I listed are highly absorbable :)
i experienced severe muscle recovery problems (1 week sore after 2 sets of pushups) after doing keto for a few months. couldnt do any training or sport anymore because of fatigue and lactic burning in the muscle. now i introduced carbs (potatoe and fruit) back in my diet. getting a bit better but still not normals. any recommandations?
Thanks for your time
Hello! So far, I just found the D3. But if I find more drains on magnesium I will be sure to let everyone know :)
@@katiwisdom6038 interesting! Yes, that is important info for sure!
Hello beautiful can you tell me what D3 you use and how much daily? Definitely enjoy watching and learning from you. Thank you 😊
@@lounamana hello! Have you been eating enough fat? What you’re describing is common if you’re not consuming enough fat.
Sardines cleared up leg cramps for me. I have at least one serving per day.
Great tip! Yea, there are lots of vitamins and minerals in fish
Maybe thats why when I ate a bit of liver, my cramps stopped.
Maybe!
Yep! That is keto flu or carbohydrate withdrawal in action. The minute you eat some carbs, the symptoms improve :)
Thats great! Im glad you found what works for you :)
I am with you. I don't find all of these symptoms to be very healthy. Whole foods and variety will be my focus foe the future
Am heading back to that after severe gout and leg cramps and not able to eat enough.
Dr Sara Pugh mentioned that magnesium malate is better for muscles - might be worth considering if nothing is working (I’ll be trying it…)
Interesting! I will have to check that out, thanks for the tip!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Were you drinking electrolytes aswell as taking the potasium and magnesium?
Sometimes
Make an enzyme recipe for us please. I recommend Magnesium Tartrate, Potassium Chloride, and Sodium Chloride: easily found. No sweetener. Maybe cocoa for a "is this mixed" agent.
are you sure these ingredients would make an enzyme? seems like a decent electrolyte to me, though.
To get my potassium in I just get the original, No Salt, sodium free and it is pure potassium. I just put it with a small amount of water and take a shot.
Hey Jenny, how long did it take to fix the problem once you started taking them?
Hello! It took about 3 weeks to fully go away. It has come back a couple times since, but it was when I hadnt drank enough water. I made sure to hydrate better the next day and it was good again :)
Check your veins. I had to get my veins fixed. I was doing all of what you mentioned but I am older than you. Had invisible varicose veins
Look into Butcher’s Broom and Horse Chestnut extracts.
You stated you backed off to only one magnesium in the evening but you didn’t say which one?
Hello! It goes back and forth. I havent been doing magnesium at night lately. But I like magnesium glycinate
i thought carnivore or all meat diet give you all the nutrients your body needs???then why need to supplements?
@@ronescalona I probably don’t need to take the vitamin D supplementation, but that’s a personal choice. Also, I don’t think that taking supplements is a bad thing. This video is meant to be educational.
@@JennyMitich As to why Inuit don't take D supplements.
Your body depletes electrolytes when you aren’t eating carbs. Carbs make you retain water which is where the minerals are. You can get a lot from meat only but most need a little more because there’s only so much you can eat. We don’t need to eat vitamins. We get it all in our diet. Minerals are different.
You needed Magnesium and more water.
Hello! Maybe! That could help, its worth a shot
i’ve had the tired feeling
Your electrolyte brand has stevia. Stevia is a diuretic and so you lose your electrolytes along with the fluid. There are many issues with ALL forms of stevia and in any amounts. A word to the wise.
The unflavored does not. All the flavored ones do have stevia.
@@kathleensaeva2649 It looked to me like one of the flavors (there are many) but I’ll take your word for it that it is the one out of all of them that doesn’t have stevia. Hopefully she’s not getting any stevia. It’s good that you can’t do stevia as it affects memory as well as many other cognitive processes. We have taken hundreds of people off stevia who thought they were into dementia but after 3-6 months off stevia, their memory and overall cognition was normal again.
@@kathleensaeva2649I did go back to read the momentary flash at 1:58 and saw “unflavored” on the packet when I blew it up. Good eyes you have, you must be younger than me. 👍
Do you take one of each kind of Magnesium or just one kind?
I stick to one kind at a time
Hi Jenny, thanks for the video!
Yea. It’s called potassium deficiency. Buy potassium chloride. Get it in ya

So do you mean high D3 intake deplete magnesium? I've been taking D3 supplements so just curious.
Hello! I listed out the ones I talk about in this video in the description :)
I’ve had people call me a troll for honestly saying how I feel on carnivore…I feel awful, but it has been only two months. Have others experienced such weakness and fatigue two months in or more?m
For sure! Try increasing your electrolytes, that can be helpful. How much protein are you eating?
@@JennyMitich Honestly I have such little appetite all I ate today was three slices of bacon and two egg yokes. At 4 pm I had about 6 Slices of corned beef…the thought of eating more makes me nauseous.

@@M.Sforza do you like fish at all? Lots of great vitamins and minerals in seafood. Also though, have you considered adding back in some vegetables or fruit? Carnivore isn’t for everyone, perhaps keto or just whole food low carb would be better for you. Why are you doing carnivore specifically?

Hello! Drink more water for sure, and be sure to keep up with your electrolytes becaue that can help
Thank you :)
So why weren't you taking more electrolytes?
