How to fix nonresponsive Chevy remote key fob

  • I have had two key fobs become nonresponsive over a 6 year period. The battery was not dead and some buttons worked as expected. The main buttons that became unresponsive were the two most used, Lock and Unlock. This tutorial shows what I did to fix the buttons to be more responsive.
    A new key fob costs over $100, so save some money.

    I have two Chevy Cobalts, both 2010, and the key fobs (4) had stopped working. My shop had quoted me $250 for each car. I tried this hack. For 10 cents worth of aluminum and eight drops of crazy glue this worked! freaking awesome dude. You just saved me $500. Genius.

    This! Ours stopped working so naturally, we bought a battery. The key fob wouldn't do a thing. After watching this and gluing some foil under the buttons it worked like a charm. Thanks!

    This solution was easy and amazing. The fobs for my 2010 Malibu had both stopped working well, one pretty much useless. Being a bit skeptical at first I tried it without gluing the foils down and it worked! Then I super-glued the foils down, let them dry in the air for a while (also hoping to avoid gluing my fob parts together) and the results were fantastic! Cheap and easy fix, try this first! I remember using a foil fix on some other electronics and I was wondering if it would work on fobs. Thanks!

    Dude! You’re a genius. This worked like a champ! I had one old fob which the unlock button didn’t work hardly at all and a newer fob that was starting to exhibit issues and had to press harder on the buttons to get it to work. After this fix they both work like almost new (except the trunk button on the older fob doesn’t work-probably the circuitry, as long as lock & unlock work that’s all I care about!) Bastards at the dealership where u usually need to get new fobs usually charge around $150.00! (To do basically nothing). So this was a welcome alternative. Don’t know how long it will last but hopefully a little while at least. Thanks again!!!

    Just a quick FYI on this procedure. My 2004 Silverado was having the issue shown in Erich's video. The main issue appears to be residue accumulating between the gold circuit and the rubber contacts. A much simpler procedure that worked for me was to use a q-tip sprayed with electrical cleaner, cleaned the gold circuit and the tip of the rubber contact and my fob is working again. If you don't have electrical cleaner, try a little bit of rubbing alcohol.

    • @unclelarry623
      @unclelarry623 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did the same thing, as I had a can of Electric Contact Cleaner. (2008 Silverado) It worked! There was an oily residue on the contact side of the key fob (perhaps to water proof?) A lot of black residue came off of each side of contacts. Anyway, I've been dealing with this for years. Finally got around to addressing it. Easy fix! BTW, both key fobs needed to be cleaned.

      @@teddhopkins6283 Follow up to my previous post; My fobs started acting up again. Bought 2 new fobs on Amazon for 16 bucks a piece. On my 2008 Silverado, you can easily program them with the vehicle's on board computer. (no scan tool necessary) Plenty of instructions on TH-cam. Now both fobs work like the original when new! Your 2002 should be an easy program. I believe the 2015 Silverado on, you may need a locksmith, dealership or programming scan tool.

    Genius. My fob works again after use 2 yrs!!! So my mom bought a 2011 traverse with the auto start. I got my 2012 Malibu in 2016, didn’t know it had auto start until just this month when my mom told me I had to hold it down long and it had to be remote locked. Well I also found out it wouldn’t work with check engine light on; I found the codes and replaced the camshaft solenoid. It started with remote but the unlock button didn’t work so of course it honked at me when I get in. Thinking this whole time I needed flare fob and not wanting to spend $50-$100 I decided to TH-cam programming new fob and came across this video. Ha! I’m so happy I don’t need to buy a new one.

    I guess this would be what you could do as a last resort but before you do that here is my advice. I have cleaned and worked on these style remotes for many years and the quickest and least damaging way to repair one of these is this. Get two or three cotton swabs you use for your ears and some denatured alcohol then dip the swabs into the alcohol, sling off the excess and gently clean all the control button electrical contact points visible in the video by rubbing off the gunk on both the electrical side and the inside contact point of the rubber buttons. Clean up any other areas as well then let dry then reassemble the remote. I've done this with many liquid damaged remotes and it get's them up and running. This video here is an excellent second option and kudos to the man with the idea.

    I have my doubts about the aluminum foil trick, but if it works, great! HOWEVER, I fixed both my fobs, which I was ready to throw away. Like Erich, the hardest part is getting the fob open. I had replaced the battery in both fobs, to no avail. However, Erich made me consider another source for the problem...dirt/debris/residue! After 13 year, the push button's rubber had worn into electrical contacts. I used rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to remove the rubber residue on both the electrical contact and the push button rubber. BAM, every button was back like new. Try the simple cleaning trick before permanently altering the fob with adhesive and aluminum. Thanks Erich for the idea.
