5 Reasons Why a Keyless Remote Does Not Work

  • Video tutorial on the five different reasons as to why your keyless entry or key fob doesn’t work. This video is based on the reasons as to why the key fob or keyless entry doesn’t work completely as in operating the lock, unlock, panic, trunk and door features all together. If only one button doesn’t work or your vehicle doesn’t start, well that can be relating to another issue.

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -keyless entry remote
    -battery
    -screwdriver
    -socket set and ratchet
    -multimeter
    -soldering iron
    -solder
    -radio frequency tester
    Procedure:
    Issue #1:
-the battery in the remote has failed
-if the remote was working previous and you found the range of the remote was gradually becoming less until it finally quit, then the battery was wearing out
-battery replacement is usually fairly straight forward and there is no need to pay a dealer for battery replacement
-purchase a replacement battery from a store where stock tends to move quicker
-ensure the metal retaining clips which hold the battery into place do have some tension, otherwise there maybe a contact issue and the remote isn’t receiving any power
    Issue #2:
-the remote needs to be reprogrammed to the vehicle
-some dealers will claim that this can only be done by them, but this is false for a majority of vehicles as long as you have one working remote
-a working remote is needed amongst most vehicles to access the programming sequence for adding another remote
-only a handful of vehicles can have a remote programmed by operation of the key, accessing some pairing switch under the dash, etc.
    -procedures will vary between vehicles
    Issue #3:
-the fuse has blown for the control circuit or module of the keyless entry system
-refer to your owner’s manual for the corresponding fuse, locate the fuse box, and then test the fuse
-use a test light while the fuse is in place or remove the fuse completely to do a continuity test using a multimeter
-do not visually inspect the fuse as this isn’t a reliable method
    Issue #4:
-either the antenna, wiring, or faulty module may fail
-depending how the design of your vehicles system, you may have a separate antenna which can fail, any wiring may become faulty, connections can corrode or in a rare situation the module can fail completely
-diagnostic procedures will vary between vehicles but you can refer to a vehicle specific repair manual or there might be common fault areas known to your vehicle which can be found through online sources such as car forums
    Issue #5:
    -the remote can fail completely
-sometimes you can pull apart the remote and inspect the circuit board for any cracked solder joints
-if you find a cracked solder joint, they can be re-solder
-other times an electrical component may have failed and in order to determine that beyond testing each component on it’s own, use a radio frequency tester
-this is a speciality tool which determines if the keyless entry is sending out a signal when a button is activated
-you can purchase these tool yourself, although they can be expensive or a mechanic, electronics’s technician, or locksmith maybe able to do this for you

Last year nearly all car fobs in a local carpark near me would not work . After intense investigations it turned out the issue was a local ham radio operator transmitting on 433 mhz using many watts which blocked 99% of fobs when he was transmitting to most car remote frequencies of European , Japanese + Korean cars which is reason fobs only worked temporary.
    Worth trying spare fob ,
Not sure if this is the same in the united states .

Sixth cause, which I experienced recently. I have keyless entry and my trunk buttons stopped working on the fob and the dash. Turns out, there is a button that disables the trunk remote opening, located in the glove box, which had accidentally been pushed. This is so that when you valet park you can secure the contents of the trunk. Took it to a garage and they were stumped also for awhile, then figured it out, no charge to me.

Just bought a 2013 Sienna came already with one remote. I have tried the programming steps for additional remote multiple times and it's not working. Is it because I already have a working remote? In your video I beleive you may have mentioned such a problem and wasn't sure. Please advise.

Every once in a while, I've noticed that using the key fob on our aftermarket car alarm doesn't disable it and the alarm goes off. The alarm light on the dash will still be blinking armed even after unlock was pressed on the aftermarket key fob to disable the alarm. The car didn't have a factory alarm system on it at all beforehand and the aftermarket alarm system was installed at a professional place. It rarely has this issue. Other times, in a certain large parking lot of a specific business up the street, it doesn't respond to unlock/disarm commands at all for a while and finally does. Just some kind of interference?

Hi, my remote key does unlock the car but not locks it, but the remote light is on when i push on lock, i got 2 keys with a remote in both and it's all the same problem. It is about programming or the remote module is defect?

I have a 2005 Honda accord. And as a new widow I’ve got to figure this out on my own . I’m having a couple of problems. A viper alarm has been installed and the fob stopped working. Changed the batteries and it lights up but still doesn’t work. I’m assuming it has to be reset. That’s where the issue comes in. I cannot get my key in the drivers side door due to someone putting something in the key hole. I can’t get the key inserted. Is there anyway to reset the fob???? Thank u for any advice u can give me.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you know the model number of your alarm system, you can usually find a user manual for it through Google. The procedure will vary, some have a reset button on the side of the module. To get the model number, you’ll need to find the module box in your car. If I had to guess, it’s probably under the steering column. That was a very common location.

How many years is the lifespan of remote battery?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Depends how it's taken care of and the quality. It should easily last the life of a vehicle and many have, especially on something older. From what I've seen, the newer stuff seems to require more frequent replacements.

Keyless remote is BS and worse part is if you have to get it replaced it can cost $300...and in some cases $500. INSANE!!!
In the older days you could go to a hardware store and pay $5 to get a new key. WTF???? Only thing different is the Auto Industry gets now to suck a huge amount of money into Their Pockets for some %×!# peace of plastc. Are you kidding me???? Like I said

6th reason: FM transmitter or Bluetooth audio device blocks keyless entry fob. No issue locking the car with the fob but the unlock frequency is blocked.
The FM/Bluetooth device only blocks the unlock frequency when it's turned on, unfortunately the power remains on to the device even when the car is turned off and the key removed etc.
The device has to be manually turned off when exiting the car or the fob simply won't unlock the car. Luckily this car can be manually unlocked with the key... :^)
Of course this could be a one off experience, eg this particular car (2004 VW Beetle) and or this particular FM/Bluetooth device (Response AR3142) which was purchased from Jaycar in New Zealand.

I just bought a jeep a few weeks ago that didn’t come with a key fob. I ordered a new OEM fob and took it to a local lock smith to get it cut and programmed. New fob was transmitting, coded correctly to my jeep, and appeared to be completely functional. However, after it was programmed the locks did not respond. The locksmith even cut a new fob from his own stock and again, did not respond. $145 and no luck. I just got home to troubleshoot, and saw this comment. Sure enough, I had just put an FM transmitter in the cigarette lighter 3 days ago. I ran outside, pulled it out, and BOOM, fob worked on the first try. Thanks for commenting this!!! #6 solution for sure!!!

Figured I would add my 2 cents, as I'm sure like many of you I came here because I was experiencing this issue.
Last week I bought a Bluetooth transmitter for FM radio… I discovered that when it is plugged in, it interferes with my remote in some way and jams the signal.
I have been doing research all night trying to figure out why my key fob only works sometimes and it dawned on me that it was plugged in right now charging A couple of Electronics overnight... I've only been having trouble with my remotes (I have 3) For about a week, which is about when I bought this transmitter.
It's super clear and my radio sounds great, But I have a hard time getting my truck to lock when I run into a store or a gas station or my house if I leave the darn thing plugged in .
Ran outside after buying a 2 pack and replacing batteries, just now, and pulled the thing put of the cigarette lighter... remote worked first try. And continues to work as I circle my house.
    Hope this helps somebody!

Sounds like it was a bad battery. Some batteries sit on a store shelf for long periods of time and eventually they'll deplete on their own.

    Hello
On my 2008 Audi A5 Sport, the functions on my remote key fob have stopped, meaning i cannot lock and unlock doors anymore, nor the boot door, nor the fuel cap, not the retracting door mirrors.
I can open the door with the metal key which is inside the fob, both main and spare key (the alarm will go off though) and the car does start when inserting the jey into the ignition hole. It's just the remote functions no longer work. It's not the battery inside, because i tried some new ones already, and the LED light on the fob does come on when pressing any button.
So what in your appreciated opinion, can be done about it?
    Best regards, Sergio UK

      I had the same issue:
What do you think could be the issue with the following: After arming/locking the car with the Key FOB (2003-2007 Honda Accord) & then coming back hours later to unlock the vehicle with the Key FOB (Recently replaced the key FOB battery) & it does NOT unlock the driver door or any of the doors (You hear a sound & see the blinker lights flash as usual but it doesn't unlock. Note: All other functions on the key FOB work; Arming/Horn honks/Blinker lights flash, trunk can release, panic button works, etc.) Then after physically inserting the Key in the driver door lock (Note: The Honda Accord only has one driver door exterior key lock out of all 4 doors) to attempt to unlock it by turning the key to the right, it does NOT unlock the door that way either (No matter how much you turn the key there is a lot of resistance & it won't unlock no matter how many times you try). When this first happened, I then replaced the Key FOB battery & then it worked/unlocked the doors using the Key FOB unlock button & also physically with the key, also the interior door lock switch unlocks/locks the doors without any issue. After 4 days the same issue occured again where I CAN'T unlock it with the Key FOB (With new FOB battery) or by using the physical key.
DO YOU THINK IT'S JUST THE KEY FOB/ UNLOCK BUTTON HAVING AN ISSUE? OR DO YOU THINK THAT THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR IS GOING BAD? (Note: After I get it unlocked 'see below' both of my Key FOB's & the unlock button in the vehicle all work fine until the issue occurs again) If it's the door lock actuator going bad, how can you tell?
HOW I WAS ABLE TO UNLOCK THE VEHICLE DOORS: (Great tip for everyone):
Fortunately I found a way to roll down the windows via Key FOB (Press the UNLOCK button on the KEY FOB then press the UNLOCK button again & keep holding that button until the windows roll down, if that doesn't work try inserting your key into the door lock; turn it to the right once (or as much you can within reason) then let it go back to the middle while the key is still inserted in the door lock, then turn it to the right again & HOLD it (It may take 5-10 seconds) until the windows start to roll down (At this point you can press the unlock button from within your vehicle on the driver side arm rest; Try pressing it twice to unlock all doors & it should unlock (Note: Attempting to open the INTERIOR door handle may not open the door, you can try the other interior door handles as well, however the best way to unlock it is to press the UNLOCK BUTTON from within the vehicle) If the window only rolls down slightly then a long stick/long snow brush, etc. can be used through the window opening to press the unlock button, press it twice to unlock all doors then attempt to open via exterior door handles). FYI for anyone dealing with this type of issue (Good info to know in general). Also if you can access your trunk; remember the middle compartment toward the back of the trunk releases forward to gain access through the middle compartment of the back seat area) Only if you had it unlocked; From within the vehicle back seat area pull down the middle seat compartment/cup holders; you'll see a black middle compartment, use your key to unlock it and then test it to ensure it is unlocked & then try to open it from within the trunk as well (Always keep this unlocked for this reason in case using the Key/Key FOB, etc. does NOT unlock your doors or does NOT roll down your windows to allow you to access the interior unlock button). TRAVEL TIP: Bring an extra Key FOB with you & store it where it would be accessible (Not in your vehicle but in your travel bag, etc.), also bring an extra Key FOB battery & mini phillips/flat head screw drivers that will fit the Key FOB screw (test that it fits the screw & keep this stuff in your travel bag; not within the vehicle in case you need it) Also keep a long stick, snow brush, or 'L' shaped long thin bar in your trunk or travel bag in case your windows only roll down slightly using the Key FOB window roll down method mentioned previously so that you can press the interior door unlock button. COPY/PASTE or screen shot this & save it as 'CAR EMERGENCY' in your phone notes and add other tips as well or text it to yourself, this way you have it readily available in case you're in a place that you don't have internet access to look things like this up via TH-cam, etc. (Download the app: Google Keep - Notes and Lists) if you don't already use a good note taking app on your phone, then like I said all you have to do is type in/search: 'Car Emergency' or whatever you label it as & it's accessible.
Please feel free to comment if you think you know what the issue described above may be or if you have other solutions and also if any of these tips worked for you. Thank You

I'm stumped. I have a 2004 Explorer - keypad works, FOB doesn't. R&R battery in the FOB, no change. I eliminated it being the FOB by being able to program the FOB to my Ranger... FOB stopped working a couple days ago but worked fine until then. Does one fuse control both? Does whatever the controller is have a FOB side and a Keypad side?

Mine wouldn’t detect the key fob in a 2017 Mustang GT. Replaced the batteries still nothing. Placed key in the little slot in the cup holder and it only detected it one time and after that no more. Had to tow it to the shop.
Had to spend $1300 to get the problem “fixed”, and it still doesn’t work right. They told me they rewired the custom radio, removed the rest of a shoddy alarm install done by another shop, reprogrammed the keys, reprogrammed the car computer, replaced old modules that the other shop used with up to date modules and placed a cup holder sensor that was missing and would now detect the key fob in the cup holder.
Still ended up with the car not responding to the key fob anymore, but now I can place the key fob in the cup holder slot and it brings the car on and allows me to lock/unlock the car with the key fob for a few hours before becoming completely unresponsive to key fob.
I feel like I got ripped off, but they are still troubleshooting and we are going to put the stock radio back and see if that fixes the issue. So I’ll just hope the new shop can get to the problem without it becoming more expensive.

Not sure if I'll get an answer because this is an old thread. I had a weird problem with keyless entry. Walked up to my car and the key fob didn't work. I got inside the car and it worked. I got the other fob and it did the same thing. I bought duracell batteries and replaced both. It still was doing same thing and did it the rest of the day into the evening. I woke up and it started working and has been working ever since. I think that there is a number one and two fob when programmed. I'm thinking if the number one battery went completely dead it affected the number 2 fob. Maybe letting it go completely dead it may have lost its program and overnight it picked up the signal again.

My fob never opened everything, there was always an issue. First the passenger side stopped opening, then the trunk, then the drivers side. The only thing that opens is the driver side sliding door, and sometimes the passenger side sliding door, and the locks inside the car, same. My issue is that it stopped beeping about a year ago, changed the car battery and it started working again, now it stopped again. The theft light is still on in the car, and you can hear the back door locking, but no beeps.

I had 2 keyfobs that stopped working my door locks. The batteries on both were 3.2V so they were great. While the batteries were out I took some electronic cleaner and sprayed it on a cotton swab to clean the contacts, reinserted the battery and voila! Keyfob #1 was working again - just needed the contacts cleaned. Keyfob #2 I had to take a pocket knife and GENTLY scrape the crud off the keyfob battery contacts to make them shiny again, cleaned them with the electronics cleaner sprayed on the cotton swab, reinserted the battery and voila - keyfob #2 working again like new! Dirty contacts was the problem with both my keyfobs.

I recently replace Toyota Avalon remote battery. Since then the unlock button does not work all the time. The lock button works quite well. This happened on two avalons, 1998 and 1999. This suggests an issue outside of the battery being bad or the two remotes going bad same time. Anyone has suggestions.

I need help....so, I have a bunch of key fobs that I found on the street in a leather case. I Inspected the bag that they were in but found no address, phone number or any info that I could have used to return it to the rightful owner so I kept them all. This was 2 years ago. Today, ingot curious after finding them in a closet I was cleaning out. The fobs are of many different car types. There's Mercedes Benz, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Mustang, and so on and so on. My question to you is, could there be a possibility that I could sell these key fobs? I mean, granted, they are probably programmed to cars I will probably never see, but can these fobs be reprogrammed to match a certain car type? I would appreciate if you could help me out here. Hey, times are rough financially for me and well, if this could alleviate my problem, I'm all in to try and sell them. Thanks!
