How to Fix Unresponsive Chevy Key Fob for Free at Home | Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, GMC

  • If you've tried replacing the batteries in your GM key fob and it still won't work--don't buy a new one just yet! It may be that the conductivity has worn out inside, and it's an easy do it yourself fix. All you need is a tiny shred of tin/aluminum foil! This trick works for early to late 2000's era GM cars for sure, and it might even work for their newer flip out fobs.
This will most likely work on:
    2004-2012 Chevy Malibu
    2005-2009 Chevy Equinox
    2006-2016 Chevy Impala
    2009-2017 Chevy Traverse
    2003-2012 Chevy Colorado
    1999-2014 Chevy Silverado
    2000-2005 Buick LeSabre
    1997-2005 Buick Park Avenue
    1997-2005 Buick Century
    2004-2009 Cadillac SRX
    2006-2011 Cadillac DTS
    2003-2007 Cadillac CTS
    1999-2006 Cadillac Escalade
    1999-2015 GMC Sierra
    2003-2012 GMC Canyon
    2009-2017 GMC Acadia
And many more! Hope you found this useful!

One more thing I forgot to mention: this is a somewhat temporary fix. Every couple months the foil gets moved around or dislodged, and the key either a) stops working again or b) the buttons will be pressed without you actually touching them. This is solved by repeating the process, which is kind of annoying--but it's up to you to determine whether or not that's worth a new fob.

@@blakeherzner3493exactly what I was gonna say.... I hit "reply" and saw your comment. I've also had good luck with junkyard fobs. Very cheap or free, and no programming necessary to swap out the button pad and housing...

Have you ever tried a dab of super glue or do u think that would disrupt the connection? I don't see how it would tho If ur gluing to the rubber side? Ur thoughts?

Sir, you are incredible!! My mother died in March and I got her car. It is a 2012 Malibu LT. I had been using her car to take her to her doctor's appointments before she died and it drove me crazy that the fob did not work. I wished I would have known this when she was still here because it irritated her too. I fixed both fobs and they work perfectly! THANK YOU!!

Thank you so much! This worked like a charm for my 16 year old sons key fob that wouldn’t unlock. It was so embarrassing for him to have to use the key itself to unlock his door, which would make the car’s alarm go off until he put the key in the ignition. (Not sure why this was happening?) Anyway, to spare his teenage embarrassment I was going to shell out the cash to get him a new key fob but then came across this video. Now I save money and he saves embarrassment! He and I are both super grateful. Thank you again!

You are amazing! My son has a 2005 Chevy Cobalt and the remotes stopped working. I replaced batteries and it would only work a few times then quit working. I ordered a programmer and new fobs from Amazon only to them it fail. I finally broke down and had a professional try to program it and they were unable, saying that the system wasn't recognizing the car and that it might have been too old. Nothing was working right and I left with 2 worthless fobs. I wanted to try again so I ordered 2 more fobs off Amazon and looked up a few videos. I watched about 4 and started to give up. I said one more and it was your video. Both remotes work great!! The only thing I can say is that if the foil is a little too big, when you go to lock the car, it may continue to beep a few more times. I cut the foil down to make sure it was only touching its connector.

One quick tip--I usually have to readjust my aluminum foil every couple months as it gets jostled around in there a little bit and actually makes the key malfunction until I adjust them. Just something to look out for (it's turned out to be a temporary fix that works for a couple months at a time).
