    Thank you sir. I just bought a used GM car and most of the buttons on the key fob didn’t work. I’m so glad I watched your video. I cleaned all the contacts on the board and the buttons and they we’re so filthy. After about 8 Q-tips, I was able to clean them sufficiently. Now for the test. It worked perfectly and I was so happy. I’m sure this video has helped a multitude of people and saved them a lot of money.

    • @jenniferh6813
      @jenniferh6813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeosborn3906 you've almost certainly found the answer by now. :-) But just in case anyone else is wondering, it's isopropyl alcohol. The 99% is the amount of alcohol. My husband tells me that there are different percentages in the stuff. Inspired by this splendid video, I was all set to have a go immediately with some that I had, but he pointed out that mine was only 70% and it would take longer for the fob to dry. Curses! Still, at least it prompted him to start to sort out my two-week-old key fob problem himself!

    An old electrician's trick on this is to use a regular pencil eraser. That also works well to clean some contacts.

  • @rayjones3212
    @rayjones3212 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Hi Mike ;) I used to work on electronic keyboards / keypads and you are spot on with your cleaning. If someone were to find extreme oxidation on the touch pad(s) they could use a rubber erasure to clean the circuitry followed up with the 99% and "Q-tip" to remove any residue. One other thing I would suggest to do while it is apart - clean the openings on the plastic cover where the buttons protrude. Sometimes they get "sticky stuff" in them and we all know what that can do to a key fob. Usually it takes a bit of "hot water" to remove sugar laden sediment. I've washed (with hot, soapy water) many keyboards and keypads in the past without any hesitation. Thanks for the great share! Oh and in the office machine repair business we used to call those pliers "duckbills!"

    I've never had to clean the pads (but that's a good idea for next time). I have only had a broken solder joint (which is easily re-soldered) on the battery terminals. This is the case in 6 different fobs, including car and garage door openers. It seems pushing hard on the button may break the solder joint.

    Good stuff Mike. I hate the way these key fobs open (having to take a coin and split them in two). The best design I've ever seen is by Honda. To change the battery all you need to do is twist the coin sized disc off the back. Under is the battery. Keep up the great work Mike! ~Tom

But your video did make me think about the copper leads that connect to the battery. Now my remote works perfectly.

    Thanks for this fix! I wanted to point out that in a 2001 Jeep, there's a plastic layer that needs to be slid off and cleaned. It sticks to the PCB and relays the pushing action through to the PCB from the rubber button. The carbon coated section makes a contact within the PCB closing a circuit for that button, that is the button press.
    Mine was gunky from probably 20 years of trapped skin cells and oils so I gave it a full cleaning.
    Works great now!

    it works!!! i did it on my 2001 saturn (which they don’t even make anymore) key fob. it didn’t work when i first got the car, so we just thought it needed a new battery. but then we got a new one and it still didn’t work. well i came across this video and did as you said only i didn’t have alcohol so i used other stuff. and let me tell you, that key fob was NASTY!! it had some oil or grease or something all in it. but i cleaned it, put in a new battery and reset the fob and it works now after months of me not using it cause i thought it was just broken. thanks so much!!!

    Boy I used to work for AT&T, bench repair, and the cordless phone handsets had a lot of this trouble. The black buttons that contact with the circuit pads have a chemical that breaks down over time and exude a grease like substance that prevents proper contact with the button and pad. Clean it all off with alcohol and it's all good again.
    Thanks

    I am a 69 year old, half blind lady with a 2006 Toyota Camry.
    When my key fobs stopped working several years ago, I figured out how to change the batteries, but that wasn’t my problem.
    I was so disappointed and saw no other videos at the time that advised to do anything other than change the batteries…and I couldn’t afford a trip to the dealership.
    I watched your video and followed your instructions.
    The first fob I cleaned didn’t work and I figured the batteries I’d bought several years back were probably dead, so stopped and ordered new ones off Amazon.
    I figured I’d go ahead and clean the other fob while I had my little screw driver, q-tips, and alcohol out.
    And walla! It worked beautifully.
    Tried the first one I’d cleaned and then it worked!
    Apparently there is a leading fob that must be working for them both to work.
    I did think it strange when they both stopped working at the same time. Now I know.
    I have missed my clickers so much!
    I don’t know you personally but I absolutely LOVE ❤️ You!

    Thank you for the video. I went swimming in a hotel pool and didn't notice the keys were in my swimsuit for at least an hour. The fob didn't work at all after I got out. When I got home, I opened up the fob and left it in a ziploc bag filled with rice and forgot about it for a couple of weeks. Today, I had time to work on it and used some rubbing alcohol to clean up the circuit board and contacts. I let it dry for a half hour or so and put it back together. The fob is now working great.

    Excellent. Haven't yet seen this problem addressed as you have. Problem occurs with most any silicone rubber touchpad device including TV remotes. The issue however, is not as much "dirt" as it is the release of silicone oil from the rubber touch pads which forms a gooey/oily substance preventing proper conductivity between the silicone rubber touch pad keys and the circuit board pad. I've cleaning numerous remotes that were literally coated in goo.
    Current speculation is that the repeated pressing of the keys is what squeezes out the oil of improperly cured silicone over time. 99% acts as a degreaser to remove the excess oil, allowing the electrical contact to be properly made between the rubber pad and the circuit board.
