"What Phil was doing was a standard, (actually better than standard, quite well done), forensic psychological interview. This is not about determining mental state now, but mental state at the time of the murder. One of the reasons we do interviews like that, 6 months later, then 1 year later, then every year for 10 years, is to determine original state of mind, any changes in the mental condition, shifts in perception, cognition and awareness. How sick was he then, how sick is he now? And without asking EXTREMELY invasive and personal and redundant, over and over and over, questions, you can’t get a clear or accurate picture."

I am actually studying to be a forensic psychologist, and even though I found Gus’ commentary really funny, I found the same thing. His process seems fluid and has some serious grounds

This could be the setup for a comedy sketch. Some psychologist is interviewing a killer and at first the killer is speaking in a creepy tone and acting all dark but then the psychologist's questions keep getting creepier and creepier until even the killer's freaked out, lol.

For anyone curious, there are actually very good reasons for these questions.
The problem here isn't the questions themselves, but that this is highly unprofessional to do an evaluation like this in public. This isn't an interview, it's a medical and psychological evaluation. I'll explain a bit..
1. The hammer weight was about if the kid has fetishized or glorified the murder. Has he relished it and thought about it, has he retold the story to others and settled on a number. Some killers will say stuff like that "I killed him with an 8 inch knife!" as a brag, or use details to really sell the story.
2. When he asked where he got the hammer, he meant in general. Did he buy it for murder? Or did he own it already, he owned it already.
"Did you go get the hammer?" Is asking "Was the hammer already in your room... have you stared at it planning and contemplating, or was it an impulse and you went for the first weapon you could find." An important distinction.
3. Why not kill her a week sooner or later? Again, setting up motive and premeditation. Has he been planning on killing his mom for a while or was it rage. Could he have waited a week? Did he kill her because hes a psycho and just wanted to kill someone, or did something trigger him to action at that exact time.
4. Did he stand and look at her? This one is super important. Was he capable of looking his mother in the eye and continuing or did he just run in and hit her. Was he calm, or in a rage. Does he remember specific details or was his mind in a frantic panicked state. Calm killers are most likely insane...
5. The first time you swung it, undid you swing it hard? He's trying to determine if he held back, or if he was just trying to threaten her.. his responses are what are important, but the kid isn't really replying which is why he keeps pushing with odd questions. Saying he swung as hard as he could shows anger, saying he barely hit her means maybe he's in denial or regrets his actions.
6. Was it a big swing? Again, he's trying to judge intent with the responses he's getting. He wants to know if he went in that room ready to kill or not. Did he swing with intent to kill on that first swing.
He's attempting to get some sort of reaction out of the kid, who in my opinion seems traumatized... this public interview is just wrong.
I'm sure you get it by now.

On top of that, it can help establish whether or not this person needs to go to a mental asylum/hospital, or just straight up jail.

Nah yeah I agree. The fact he doesn't really react to the same question being obviously asked in only slightly different ways really shows the severity of koala brain this inmate had going on. I think Phil was well aware of how normal folk would react to this ridiculous encounter and Gus's reaction really goes to solidify how capable Phil is at leveling with the kooks.

I have a degree in psychology and these are not proper questions for anything except trying to make a bad interview take longer.
If he was trying to elicit some emotional response he was doing a horrible job. To ask those kind of questions you present a question that requires significant response and mental involvement, not simple 1 answers.
Dr. Phil is not trained or licensed in any field of social science or psychology and his ignorance is on full display here.
@@chasedaily8134 Well, a comment here seemed to do a good job of explaining the reasons behind each question. Mostly, it was to see what his thought process was. The hammer questions, as odd as they were, seem to be determining if the guy had any hesitation. If it was a full out hit with the hammer, then the guy had clear and unshakable intent. Or if he did it at less than full, that could maybe show hesitation.
Hell, you can tell the guy is still in denial as when Phil asks if he killed his mother at 2:00 , you can hear for the briefest of moments the guy say "it wasn't me" under his breath before saying "yeah".
Be in mind, it was from a yt comment so I am welcome to be proven wrong and taught more on this subject!

I'm not quite sure how I ended up watching Mystery Inc.'s own Shaggy give a critique of an interview Dr. Phil had with a kid who murdered his mom with a 3 or 5 lb sledgehammer by hitting her over the head possibly 1, 10, or even 100 times, but I am 100% here for it.
I actually high-fived and fist-bumped the screen.
Really enjoyed this content, Gus. Hope you make more like this. I don’t think you’re copying anyone’s style with this sort of reactionary content (like H3H3), I thought it was original and funny because they were your thoughts. That mustache mic-rub and keyboard parts were particularly good stuff lol

It’s definitely a little creepy lol, but it’s actually a technique used by many journalists and professionals in the criminal justice system. A lot of stuff Phil has done shouldn't be televised. He purports to be a doctor who wants to actually help people but really he just wants to make a spectacle of them for the $$$. If he actually wanted to help people he would have a private practice where people could be comfortable and have the actual confidence of a medical professional. He won't though because he is neither a medical professional or a caring person. As it stands he's just Maury with a softer voice.
