NEW Abarth 500E: The LOUDEST Electric Car! 4K

  • We might be looking at the first proper electric hot hatch in the form of the Abarth 500e. And we're hearing it too, because this car uses a huge subwoofer on the outside to mimic the noise of the petrol car. And it's LOUD! Alex Legouix takes a closer look (and a listen).

    We hated fake noises on cars with actual exhausts and now this is just worse still. When we went from horses to cars we didn’t need the cars to sound like horses.

      For the fake engine sound they should make it a small child making car noises, or probably more appropriate, the 'My Little Pony' cartoon theme song.

    So you take out the ICE to put an Electric motor to then add fake ICE noises... I don't know, if you are going to put noises rather make something sound kind of electric, ditching one of the attractive points of abarths, the engine and the sound, making it way heavier and then adding fake combustion engine noises seems wrong to me.

  • @FakeButt
    @FakeButt ปีที่แล้ว +73

    I guess for tuning EVs there is not much room for improvement left, the whole battery/motors/BMS is a whole package designed and optimized to work with each other and its not easy to just put in a bigger motor (or tune it) to get more horse power. You can tune it a little bit so you sacrifice range for more power but there is nothing drastic to improve. Perhaps that's why they decided to make it make ICU noises, to stand out and be intentionally obnoxious. Isn't that the reason why people by Fiat 500 Abarths?

      Blatantly false. Abarth is just a sub brand of Fiat. This is not tuning this just OEM Warranty covered spec. The lawyers and sales team at Fiat have blocked the engineers from having any fun. This could easily be as powerful as a Bolt EV which is 200hp and 266lb/ft (360nm), it is limited by FWD traction after all.

    • @Neojhun
      @Neojhun ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@quintennijs6138 Factually wrong. BEV drive trains have massive potential for more power as long the Stock Motors does apply a high C Rating load on the battery. At 150hp 111kw from a 42kWh battery that is an absurdly LOW stress C-Rating of 2.64C. Such a battery should easily do 4C that is equivalent of 168kW ~ 225hp. Like Turbo Tuning it involving removing resistance bottlenecks in the distribution and having adequate cooling to maintain higher performance. BEV Tuning is very much modding & tuning a Turbo engine car. Stop spreading you erroneous assumptions. These are engineering facts.

    • @Colby_0-3_IRL_and_title_fights
      @Colby_0-3_IRL_and_title_fights ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Neojhun You're absolutely clueless about both OEM and aftermarket.
      You obviously know nothing about electronics because even the least knowledgeable person wouldn't try to list a C rating as reasons a car can be tuned. You realise that the battery and motors are two separate components right? Then why are you lumping them together.
      You're absolutely delusional and clueless. There's a reason electric car tuning hasn't caught on other than ripping out the entire propulsion system of a car and swapping it with something else.

    155 mile range is poor, considering this will be practically unacheivable.....and if you take into account that FIAT themselves have said that if you use the heater on the standard 500e, the range will be reduced by around 40%. So that leaves well under 100 miles of range. So we have what is, in practice, a 2+2 that will cost well in excess of £30k that makes a ridiculous noise and can't really take you anywhere but on the weekly shop......which probably won't fit in it anyway.

      Actually, until now the sound a car makes is part of how you control a car. The faster a car goes the more noise it makes, meaning that you can actually hear if you're driving too fast. You have three indicators to how fast you're going, visually (the world outside your car), the noise it makes and what your speedometer tells you. Take the sound away and changes are you will be driving faster than before.

    Gorgeous little car. If I'm gonna buy a second car for city commute, I don't see what can beat this one in my book.
    And I'm ok with the sound. It's obvious that the future is silent, so it's either fake sound or no sound. And I'd rather hear something when I go fast. And don't tell me the Taycan is better, it sounds like an electric car from a bad 80s sci-fi movie.

      and paris rome, milan, new york, tokyo, stockholm, in fact any city. Would also work well if you live in a small community with an up to 150 mile communte - then you charge it at work, and it's ready to go home at the end of the day

    Unfortunately this also shows how having an electric motor is also limiting, more power, less range, the power unit is actually the same so its just a computer/software update. Essentially can buy the normal-E and in the future just get a software update to do the same. It's just not worth the extra money anymore. 'upgraded disc brakes' for a car that only goes 1 second faster...

      This is just a bad package design. it has nothing to do with electric motors drive trains.

    Fake noises are awful sadly.
    This is the issue with Electric cars, you sacrifice that raw real noise from great sounding cars normally. They should have just made it a sporty and fast elec car, and that's it.

    Fake engine noise on a car with a gas engine is stupid and lazy. An electric car with fake engine noise works for me. Combine the noise with a simulated manual like the one Toyota is developing and you have a pretty engaging driving experience. If we have to go electric, this is a good way to do it for driving enthusiasts. I dig it. V-8 sound from a Fiat 500 would irritate me though.
