I used this video and your serpentine belt diagram to replace the faulty decoupler pulley on my wifes 2010 Avenger. I searched for how to replace the idler pulley, because that's what my brother and I thought it was, and this video came up. Dude, you saved me a lot of time and money, and I really appreciate it. I didn't have an air wrench, but we took the alternator to a nearby automotive shop and they spun that thing off of there, just like you did and installed the new one and didn't charge me a dime. All I paid was $52 to RockAuto for the part and I had to buy the 16 mm box end wrench and the 17 mm hex, but, I get to keep those! :)

THANK YOU. I'm going to help a girl who is a single parent raising two girls, ...she's broke so she is going to do the work herself, .. and I'm going to help. It would have been a bummer for me, impossible for her. Now she will be able to do it, learn, grow, and save TONS of money. VERY kind of you.
I send a bow of gratitude and thanks. THANK YOU !

Spent time and money replacing the 3 Idle Pulley and the power steering pump. I had the same noise in my 2008 Dodge Calibur. After watching this video, this really helped me in fixing that issue by pinpointing where the problem was and how to fix. Also for people who asks about the washer on the table, they call it a dust cover, which new pulleys come with it. Thanks for the help robinsonauto!

Great video!! Watched it a few times and basically memorized the steps and tackled the task today. Only took about 2-2.5 hours. Had the knocking sound happening lightly, noise got louder, and then ultimately the alternator began to fail. Replaced and I can't even recognize my car, haven't heard it this quiet in a while. Thanks again!

Used this video today it was helpful! but wanted to let you know you can disconnect the battery at the terminal under the hood a little easier than trying to get to the battery. It's a heavy duty cable with a plastic shield around it to keep it from grounding out on metal.

This video gets two thumbs up from me. It gave me all the information I needed to change the alternator in my 2008 Dodge Caliber. Saved me a bundle of money on the repair. Although, I hope I never have to do it again.

  • @24duduke

Did this today in about 4.5 hours on a 2007 Dodge Caliber. Same basic process. I took the wheel off to get more room below and moved the coolant reservoir above. Getting the altenator in and out past the A/C was the hardest part. Had to turn and wiggle it around a lit. One other thing, if there were any instruction how to remove the wiring clip from the alternator that'd be great. It seemed like an odd type of clip to me at least.
Did most of it with a 3/8" ratchet with 10MM, 13MM, and 16MM sockets. Used some smaller extensions to make bolt removal easier. A 16MM wrench, 1/2" inch impact wrench (needed this), and 1/2" 17MM hex socket.
    Great video instruction!

Thank you very much for this. I hear that noise in my car, and I was wondering whether it is a alternator pulley, or a power steering pump. Taking off the belt and running all accesories gave no answer. Now it's clear for me what I'am dealing with. Once again BIG thanks.

your good man.. im a mechanic as well overhauls you name it, lot of experience, but have not yet done the alt..on this vehicle and you know how it is before us mechs get our hands into something, we usually want to make our job easier at hand and quick..so then we take a quick peek into a live book ..YOU.. i mean..but anywayz so you know I saw many of these vids on this car and have to say all these mechs are really full of crap man..instead of just showing the public the people what they want to know they hide there work..what do they get out of that, they dont BS me, they shouldnt make a VID then..so have to say I SUB to you for future manuals just incase and you really do good work and answer all hidden questions the home mech needs to know..Best Vid on this make model, your real guy man..

Another viewer, and another successful application of your demonstration. I learned to use a long screwdriver at the top of the serpentine belt to keep it in place while trying to get it back on. I didn't find this out on my first try, or second, or third.....Your video on engine noise helped me NOT take off the water pump. I used a long clamp to test for sound and the decoupler pulley on the alternator was the loudest. New alternator, and my wife will ride in public with me in my car (2009 Dodge Avenger). Thanks for the assistance.

To disconnect the negative battery, just remove the negative charging terminal bolt above the fuse box (TIPM) and relays on the strut tower. You don't have to remove the idler pulley either. Just remove the upper alt bolt and loosen the lower alt bolt with a wrench and pry the alt out. It's only sitting in a perch. Thanks for posting the video.

Thank you so much my friend, you made this repair possible for me on a 2010 Avenger! Great video and diagram, seriously nice work. I was cracking up when you made the comment about what all you do to help us out, awesome. Trust me, we really do appreciate it! This job even gave me a good excuse to finally pick up an air impact wrench. The only thing I wish you would have included was the direction you were turning the tool to remove the pulley, just so we were totally certain, but by watching the direction your impact wrench was forcing your hand I was easily able to figure it out. Counterclockwise to remove, clockwise to install new one. Thank you again sir, you're the best!

I did the same thing for many years, however the local rebuild shop "Rider rebuild" closed shop, my brother in law worked there for over 20yrs its a shame, if you ever take notice the electric/hydraulic press i use often? well that press was used for rebuilding starters and alternators for many years,
If i can find a reasonable part supplier i often thought of opening a rebuild shop in addition to what i do, so yes your friend has a good point it is cheaper to skip the middle man

Thank you, The rebuild shop should know exactly what to do for you, when we used to upgrade The older Gm alts we would buy a kit that included,
    1- Brush holder assembly
    1- Diode trio
    1- Heavy Duty voltage regulator
    1- 100 amp. stator
A good shop will rewind your old stator to save$, sure im missing something however; tell them you want to upgrade for whatever reason you need, say a new stereo system and they will hook you up, chances are the alt, came in a couple amp ranges off the shelf

Hey robinsonsauto, a quick suggestion. Maybe you should redo the title to include the jeep patriot/ compass to help others when they are searching for this exact video. Like I said in my earlier post, the patriot, compass, and I believe a van share the same exact engin. Just a thought. I can't say it enough, great job once again!!

have a 08 dodge caliber making weirdest knocking banging noise from right front area of engine. can start cold with no noise then reeve it for a bit and bingo here it comes. sounds like something got hot and expanded and is hitting up against something else. someone told me piston blown? someone else said if piston/rod bad that the noise would be there when I start car. any suggestions. could it be the alternator and this pulley thing you are talking about.

Bill, thanks for the amazing video. I was actually able to borrow the auto stethescope tool and pin-pointed to my alternator, 08 Avenger!!! My question, would it be wise to also replace the idler pulleys (upper, lower, tensioner), while doing the alternator pulley? It's around $40 more for the other 3 pulleys, I just don't know if it is worth the time and money to change them out. Will these wear eventually too? Don't want to tear apart again in another 20k miles for an idler?? Thanks!!

I did this on my wifes car on Sunday and today which is Thursday the A/C went out. Could this have anything to do with the changing of the Pulley? I took extra care not to pinch or pull the compressor hoses as stated.

Honestly, I would just weld that "decoupler" bullshit locked and call it a day... How many cars are on the road with a solid alt pulley and manage to get sometimes even 100,000 miles on the same belt... Ive seen these "decouplers" fail Waaaaay before that. I even just looked up the purpose of the decoupler. It is supposed to absorb vibrations and EXTEND belt and component life. LOL, yet it itself fails before anything else.

There should be a battery disconnect up top by the strut tower.

@robinsonauto.luv video. If I get an alt. rebuilt or built with higher amps. What should I ask? What should be replaced?
