How to replace serpentine belt, tensioner and idler pulley on Dodge Avenger (Fix engine noise!)

  • This is a fast-paced tutorial for replacing idler pulley, serpentine belt tensioner, and serpentine belt on a 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Dodge Avenger. But because they share the same platform this video would also be relevant to the Chrysler 200, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Journey equipped with a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine.
    Replacing the idler pulley and tensioner can fix a grinding or whining noise that increases with engine RPM. Replacing the serpentine belt or even the tensioner can solve a squealing or chirping noise that occurs on startup, when the AC is engaged or even when a power steering load is placed on the pump.
    The Dodge Avenger has a notorious issue with the alternator decoupler pulley. When this decoupler fails it can make a similar grinding, whining or moaning sound. Make sure you check the decoupler pulley if your vehicle is making a strange engine noise before installing new pulleys and tensioner.
    You'll notice at 2:37 I remove the bolts that hold the tensioner in place in a peculiar manner. This is the easiest way I have found to remove the tensioner. The pulley of the tensioner blocks your access to the upper 13mm bolt. You'll need to put tension on the tensioner to move the pulley out of the way, but this can get tiring and is sort of awkward. I've found that if you loosen the top bolt a little, then remove the bottom bolt you can move the whole tensioner into a position where it is easy to access the upper bolt.
    You might also notice that the bolt head size is 16mm on the idler and tensioner on the original equipment but the aftermarket parts use a 15mm bolt head. This is normal and will not affect the performance of the part.
    Here are some links to the parts I install in this video:

    I always perform repairs according the factory service manual. You need to have all the information (toque specs, testing procedures and schematics) to insure you've pinpointed the actual problem and to insure your vehicle is safe after you've completed your repairs. Here is a list of tools I use in this video in order of which they appear: serpentine belt tool with a 16mm socket, 19mm socket or lug wrench, electric impact driver, 10mm socket, pocket screwdriver, 1/4 drive flex head ratchet, 3/8 drive flex head ratchet, 16mm socket, 16mm wrench, 13mm deep socket, 13mm shallow socket, 3/8 drive universal joint, 15mm wrench, 15mm socket, 15mm socket for serpentine belt tool.
    Here is a serpentine belt tool similar to the one I use in this video amzn.to/2SFaya0

    Good video. I replaced both of the pulleys you did in this video plus the alternator and put on a new serpentine belt. For whatever reason the upper idler pulley didn’t seem bad at all and now my car is silent. Can barely tell it’s running when sitting inside lol.

    Thanks for the help. I made a few variations thought, partly due to my tool selection. I removed both idler pulleys and then moved the alternator out of the way which made changing the tensioner easier. And I had bought the pulleys, belt and tensioner as a kit so all getting done anyway.

    Just an FYI some may know this already. New belt kept coming off pulleys get one on, another fall off. I finally used plastic wire ties tied to different pulleys and that did the trick. I was able to use my 3/8 breaker bar with short piece of 1/2” conduit to loosen tension pulley

  • @sebhomer
    @sebhomer ปีที่แล้ว

    Helpful video, thanks. The pin came bent and stuck in my tensioner making it impossible to install with the pin still inserted. Seems to be common. I chalk it up to shoddy aftermarket parts. Second, I highly recommend having extra long 15 & 16mm wrenches to crank on the tensioner bolt. Very difficult to get leverage with a standard sized ones due to the location.

    READ THIS IF U CAN'T GET THE PIN OUT! great video, spot on. Except it took me over a hour to get that pin out. I finally had to take the pulley back off and saw the pin in half then both halves fell out no problem. But then it was a bitch to get the top bolt tightened. Needed 2nd person there to hold pulley back as far as it would go. Live and learn.

    Question sir: a mechanic installed pulleys and serpentine belt in my 2013 2.4 avenger. Then after a week it fell off while driving. So he installed a new belt but installed a tensioner this time. It was good the whole winter. Although still makes a squeaky sound. It just fell off again today when the weather got cold. And in between the last time he installed the belt i had to get the power steering return and pressure hose fixed twice. Does it have anything to do with it? It cost me too much money. Please help
    This avengers are trash. Chrysler shouldnt sell this shitty vehicles! Im so frustrated.
