How to Replace a Clutch in your Car or Truck (Full DIY Guide)

  • Learn how to replace a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing (aka release bearing), pilot bearing and rear main seal in this video!
My clutch was fine but my throwout bearing was bad so I decided to show how to replace all of the wear items while the transmission was off. This includes replacing the pilot bearing which the transmission input shaft goes into, the throwout bearing which engages the pressure plate via the clutch fork, the flywheel which I upgraded to an aluminum light weight flywheel, and finally the rear main seal because that is a common wear item which causes oil leaks in higher mileage motors. With the transmission out, it is worth it to replace all of these parts now instead of having to do this all over again. Most clutch kits come with the throwout bearing and pilot bearing so you just need to buy a rear main seal.

Some other tips to supplement this great video:
    1. Even with the alignment tool, if it’s a plastic one, the clutch disc will likely sag a little. So before you tighten the pressure plate bolts, make sure the alignment tool is centered in the pilot bearing and level.
    2. Some transmissions will have a small amount of play at the input shaft so do some research before buying a new
tranny if yours has end play.
    3. Another trick to lining up the input shaft to the splines, is manipulating the gear levers and put it in gear then rotate the rear tailshaft until it lines up and fits in. This causes the input shaft to rotate. Then put it back into neutral as you push it in.
    4. Don’t hammer in bearing pilot bushings!

22:52 "We want the end of the alignment tool to go all the way into the pilot bearing and that will hold the clutch in the middle for us."
The first solo clutch job I did was on a lift. I didn't have a cart or table so my pressure plate was on the floor by my feet. I installed the clutch plate with the alignment tool, picked up the pressure plate from the floor and as I stood back up the falling clutch plate struck the bridge of my nose while on its way to the floor, where it was chipped against the concrete. Live and learn!

I just wanted to reach out and tell you how awesome you and your videos are for Diys. Being a female , mechanical skills normally are not on my resume but repairs are so expensive I have learned to do many of them myself and finding a video that breaks it down well enough for this to be done is more times than not very difficult , and leads to many trips to the library or hours of searching on line with taking bits and pieces from each source and tackling the job. Your videos always break it down to where I can understand it and you show every step many times I will search your videos and I do it with your video kinda like we’re doing them together like hands on lol. Like the clutch video , it saved me hundreds of dollars and hours of stressful searching. Thank you so much and don’t stop teaching guy it is your calling. .

_Usually_ less mess, but harder to get a good seal sometimes, especially if the cloth is too thick. Remember that it has to fit between the inside of the bushing and the outside of your pushing tool without too much friction, or you'll just wedge it all inside the bushing - but without too much extra room or it just won't work. But it's an option if you don't have bread handy. :-)

@@chrisfix Thanks! I worked on this car with my dad 30 years ago, and recently inherited it so it’s very special to me besides the history of it :-) I’m currently waiting for all the parts and good weather because my garage is just big enough to park it in. I’ll let you know how it went!

I love how Chris buys the parts that he was originally going to replace only to find out that he is going to replace the whole transmission, it really shows that no matter what you plan sometime your plan wont work out and you should always expect the unexpected.

Dude, you are good if you are not making money by posting videos you should. One of the best videos I have seen lately. You get right to the point and talk only about what needs to happen. Short and Concise. Also you have a good radio voice. Keep up the good work.
