  • With Home Minister Amit Shah calling for Hindi as the common language for India, a language war has started brewing. The southern states have rejected the idea again. Even the newly appointed Chief Minister of the BJP government in Karnataka BS Yediyurappa has defied Amit Shah and tweeted that Kannada is their principal language. NDTV talks to the north Indian youth of Delhi University to find out what they think of "one nation, one language."

@@jayanthshukla3310 Tamil has the potential to become the world's learning language! Tamil is the mother of all languages. It is the oldest language, religion, and civilization in the World. English is sufficient for the nation and world communication. South Indians are paying more tax than the north. North Indians are coming to the South then ruining the region's culture and native people's livelihoods. First of all, give a primary education to the people in the north. In fact, they all seem to be very poor and famine leads them to migrate to other parts. Initially, they occupied the cities and then now occupying the villages. People from Tamilnadu always respect each and every language in our country. There is no need to impose any language on others so respect others' feelings.

Govt of pakistan made it clear that bengali will continue as the official language of east bengal and urdu was being chosen because it was the only language which was working as the lingua franca of the country (A bengali used urdu when he conversated with a sindhi or punjabi or pashtun and vice versa as all other languages were regional languages limited to their native speakers only). but bengalis resented this not because they didn't know urdu but because they saw it as a sign of west Pakistan's domination. West bengal on the other hand never resisted hindi and if i am not mistaken people in the state esp Kolkatta study hindu (unlike east bengal where urdu was not taught altogether to Bengalis). so basically you the people of west bengal have already surrendered yourself to hindi, you dont have the numbers or guts to fight hindi walas.

@@suddenrise5656 One person does not make the rule. There are many in the South who learn Hindi and speak it. Have you ever tried to survive speaking in any language other than Hindi in Delhi or in the Hindi areas? Even if you speak English you are mocked. This is the culture there. In the 1960s I was travelling in a bus near Cannaught Place (boy they keep the English name there) and a school going girl with all her books got into the bus but the Conductor could not wait and whistled to start the bus. She fell and the bus behind without noticing this started. All her books were on the street. I screamed in English at the Conductor and immediately came the reprimand that as an India I should speak in Hindi? I got annoyed since it was a Hindi speaking girl who fell and this guy does not feel for her but is concerned about my speaking in English. I asked him if he knew where I am from and asked him why he was not concerned about that Hindi speaking girl like someone who does not even speak the language. He continued which country am I from? I told him what if I am from Sri Lanka? Also that India has 22 national languages and Hindi is just one of them. I also had problem in getting a ticket at the railway station in Delhi for my return journey to Chennai since the person insisted that I talk in Hindi. Such behavior is the norm in the Hindi belt and you want South Indians to learn Hindi then ask the central govt to fund all languages and not just Hindi/Sanskrit. Make them teach about all the languages in schools telling them about the great treasures in these languages. Let the central govt especially under BJP show they love all Indian languages by putting subtitles in all languages with the technology now available for all their conversation with the people. The model they like is Mumbai and Poone where no one can survive with Marathi. They want every part of India to be like those cities and forget their local languages. Unfortunately so called broad minded people like you do not demand fair treatment from the central Govt towards all languages. Do not say you are ready to learn various languages? Where is the proof. Do you know how many Tamils learn Hindi? You have a larger population and tell me how much percentage is learning any of the south indian language. So stop talking as if every hindi speaking person is willing to learn another non Hindi language. They do not even learn marathi in Mumbai and Poone. As far as Tamil is concerned it does not go anywhere when English comes. English is used in the internet and we get enormous benefit from it, Tell me one benefit Hindi offers other than arrogance. Do you have any literature, science or technology other than that there are over 40% people in one area who speak that language. Do not compare Hindi with English?
