I learned a lot from this video. Thank you for the tips on how to keep from losing the ball or spring. I had already lost the tiny ball which vanished like magic because I did not do it your way. I could not find the ball even using a magnet. I made a tool to retain the ball during reassembly - using the front end of a .308 Winchester case for the metal. After much fruitless search for the size of the steel ball, I decided to try a Crossman Premium BB which is zinc coated steel and tighter tolerance than the copper plated BB. Now my 1/2 inch ratchet Craftsman 44975 is back to work. I am guessing the BB will work in the 3/8 Craftsman ratchet wrench too.

Never thought of a BB, that is a great idea, I have lost 3 or 4 in my shop and it sucks!, there is actually a size for them but I lost the paper I wrote it on! I hope you get good life out of your ratchet.

Nice cleanup. You have a knack for taking ratchets apart and putting them back together! 👍

Nice video. You have a lot of guts and skills to strip and clean these ratchets. Thank you.

Great job. It's just hard to beat those Craftsman ratchets. You can buy them cheap and they're durable and dependable. Nice clean up DJ

Great video it’s helpful, I have one of my grand fathers Craftsman V ratchet’s. I believe it may be from the 50’s non quick release and the reverse lever is a V shape. All crud up and will hardly move I was looking to take it apart and hopefully restore it to throw it in my toolbox for use. It’s just a 1/4 drive but it will get used being handed between 3 generations I have an appreciation for it being I never got to meet him.

Got a couple craftsman 1/2 V quick release ratchet from ex father-in-law, I think he said they were from around the mid 60s. Took it apart and cleaned it everything inside looked perfect, no chipped teeth or anything. Used boat trailer axle Green grease for lube, probably not right not I've used them since and felt normal.

It is nice to have a tool that you can use and have a connection with it, If you never taken one apart take your time and use a large Zip-lock bag just in case that ball bearing shots out, if you do not want to take it completely apart just take the big gear out and use carb cleaner in there and oil or lube it and you should be just fine!

That axle grease will work fine, like I said it is not turning at 3400rpm so it will work great, just think you have some tools with history!

I really enjoyed this video! I recently inherited a Craftsman 44975 and a 43785, which is the 3/8 drive version. The latter was freewheeling. It was missing the spring and ball bearing. I found a 5/32" bearing and spring at my local hardware store. I had to cut the spring to length. I was able to put it together, but it wasn't easy because I didn't have your nifty little tool to hold the ball in place while inserting the pawl. Can you share some details about how you made it? I want to make one before I tackle the other ratchet. Thanks!
