I turn a Nut into a tiny Adjustable Wrench

- In this video I'm turning a stainless steel M20 nut into a tiny adjustable wrench. All three parts are completely made out of one single nut. First I turned the thread and the hexagon away on the lathe. After cutting a slit into it I was able to open it up with the help of a torch. A few heats later I had a very straight and flat piece of stainless steel. I first went then on the milling machine and milled the whole part to the final width of the wrench. I then cut of a piece with the hacksaw to make the body out of it. With a tiny t-slot endmill I was able to mill the t-slot very nicely with a very low feedrate and a lot of oil. After milling the square hole and drilling the deep 2.1mm hole I started to shape the outer contour. Then I moved on by making the movable part of the wrench. I milled it all in one operation with very careful steps to not risk and chatter marks or whatsoever. After filing the square bit round I sanded the rectangular part until it fitted nicely into the body. I then cut the M2 thread and cut the piece off with the hacksaw, assembled it with the body and sanded both parts flush. Then I started rounding off all edges with needle files, sandpaper and finished it with very fine steel wool for a brushed finish. All what's left to do now was making the knurled adjuster nut. For that I forged the remaining of the nut into a square piece, which I could clamp in the four jaw chuck on the lathe.I turned it round, supported it with a live center, put the knurling onto it, drilled and tapped the hole, chamfered it and parted it off. Then it was just a matter of quickly assembling the three pieces.
This was a very cool little project for me. I really like how it turned out. It's a very cool little item in my opinion.
Here's the link to the restoration video of the big adjustable wrench at the end of the video:

Thanks a lot for watching this video! If you liked it, I suggest you also watch the restoration of the big brother of this small wrench, which was the template for the small one.

is this tool forsale?
It's called a shifter mate 👍
@@PatrickLeeUS.m? B 7
I will.
I had the 'big brother', actually. By a brand called 'King Dick' (which is pretty epic all by itself ;)). From somewhere between 1920-1930. (Found an ad for it in an old catalogue for fl. 1,- (one Dutch guilder. Aka 1 dollar. Back when money was worth something ;))
This brought back some nice PTSD of me hand-finishing the first 500 of these I ever sold. Truly fantastic work! Now I need to make an even smaller one for sale. IT'S ON!
Do you think MM did this on purpose to see what you can respond with?
Duelling mini-wrenches, lets go.
Let's go!
The Adjustable Wrench War
The first molecular adjustable wrench!
😂😂😂 game on fellas 😂😂😂
My grandfather, a Swiss engineer and tool-and-dye maker, told me "If you want to know a machinist's worth give him a piece of steel and a file and see what he can make." This wrench is evidence of this machinist's worth. The results are stunning and the video is perfect. Thanks again for all of your efforts to share your artistry with us.
Yes, this is art.
Токарный фрезерный станок это напильник?
@@alexey4580 я сделал такой же напильником. На станках быстрее.
Yep agree 👍 my mechanics is the best 👌
He's a good machinist, no doubt. But, he did use more than a piece of steel and a file. He has some VERY nice toys too. Yes, I am envious.
To a non-mechanic/non-machinist, this is like watching the secrets of magic being exposed. Simply amazing! 👍
As a machinist, I am completely stunned and awed by the incredible artistry in this video. Engineering and machining is an art🤩🤩🤩
Hand Tool Rescue is going to go nuts when he sees this. Some of your finest work.
Agreed!
This is a declaration of war if I ever saw one, so much for Swiss neutrality!
Say what you will about a Switzerland-Canada war; at least the snacks would be amazing.
"nuts", I see what you did there 👀
@@RemiCardona So what did he do? Please explain and elaborate on your thoughts, brother!
This guy is the best restoration TH-camr hands down. Everything he does is nothing short of incredible and has been keeping me entertained going on 4 years now
He's the only one who doesn't add forced comedy, doesn't have "mascots", doesn't say "Subscribe" every five seconds, doesn't add music, etc. Just pure content.
Thanks a lot for your support :-)
@@mymechanics No problem! Thanks for all your great work over these last few years, it's been a great pleasure watching it all

Also great job my mechanics
@@samquigley2447 Thanks, you got a pretty rad one as well
Hello my mechanics! 🔧 Your video on turning a stainless steel M20 nut into a tiny adjustable wrench is nothing short of impressive! The level of craftsmanship and ingenuity involved in creating all three parts from a single nut is truly remarkable.
Watching you skillfully use the lathe, torch, and milling machine to shape and transform the nut into the final product is a mesmerizing experience. The precision and attention to detail that you demonstrate throughout the process are evident.
Naprosto perfektní práce. Zatím nejlepší video a asi ho už nikdo nepřekoná. Miniaturní práce se mi velmi líbí.
Absolute madlad my mechanic is. Such precision is to be expected of one of the best restoration channels ou there. Bravo!
Such precision is to be expected of a Swiss guy hehe
One of the best? The best. One and only.
The best
“one of”??? You take that back, my good sir! My mechanics is THE best.
Regarding your phrase ‘one of’: if you can name the channels that produces the same quality work with the same consistency and video editing quality PLEASE tell me.
The one thing goes so easily overlooked in these videos is just how dang good your photography is. It truly is exceptional to see how far you have come in your craft.
Yes! My brain hurts just trying to think through the steps he takes in the build / restoration... Now imagine programming angles and shots before each step.
@@IFGchannel931 HARD work. Time consuming processes. Yeah, definitely boggles the mind.
Very good indeed!
Seriously, every shot is perfect and his precision is so great it's easy to forget how small these pieces are
Because of your channel i started to restaurate historical garden tools. I have not one hundrets of your talent or knowledge, but the pride i feel when i made out of an old and rusty crooked rake a tool that looks like new is totaly worth the hours of work.
It's been a while my mechanic.hope to see a new upload from your channel.😢
Please make this a series. It was common back in the day for apprentice machinists to make miniature tools in a set.
Yep ! I made a basic vernier caliper and I still use it to measure drill bits
I made a miniature vice as my very first engineering/machining project, it was actually a lot of fun.
Fabulous. I love mini items and this just tickles my fancy, MM. Thank you for the joy & happiness your work brings. I have a grin on my face!🤗😁
This was fun to make, the size was challenging at points. At least it was easy to handle. Now I'm ready for a big project ;-) Thanks Vickie

I miss my mechanics! Hope you are well, brother
And here I thought the stainless bolt into a combination lock was the pinnacle in regard to your ingenuity and creativity. Thanks for once again, surpassing my expectations. Well done.
Thank you very much!
Your measurements are incredible, so precise! As always I’m impressed by your patience and fine craftsmanship. Takes a lot of dedication to saw and file that much metal.
Did you see how small the tool was? There was hardly any material to begin with lol.
It would not take a long time to remove this much material.
Now, the tolerances, for something this size, really impressive.
@@CadillacDriver well that’s true I guess lol
I left extra 0.1mm material on the movable part when I milled it. Oh boy, that was a mistake... it took several hours to sand it down to a nice fit in the t-slot.
@@mymechanics 0.03 will do good?
My favorite restoration channel. The author is not so much a mechanic as an artist. These restorations are objects of art
Where are you? Miss your videos..
Don’t know which one impresses me more: the machining or the macro-photography. Both are absolutely fantastic!
I didn’t really understand how small it was until he called out that the threads were M2. 😲 So tiny and so perfect. And somehow there was even a bit of material left over!
Beautiful work, as always! ❤
these mighty all repairing channels on youtube are one of the best things that happened to the internet
You have a real talent and gift. Truly amazing work and tools
Watching this channel has actually encouraged me and allowed me to become more patient when doing things. Thank you!
I find your sheer skill and patience as a machinist quite admirable. I keep coming back to your videos because very few other channels show your level of both creativity and care. Always looking forward to the next video!

Thank you very much!
Ive missed you and your work!
This is the only YT channel where I watch EVERY new video from start to finish without skipping bits etc. For me, truly mesmerising stuff. Bravo.
Thank you so much for the support, I really do appreciate it!
your cinematography is getting better and better. Every shot in this video is perfectly thought through. Like the camera moving synchronized to the drill or having that perfect black backdrop at the CNC machine. Makes the whole video so satisfying to watch
This is EXACTLY the kind of content i stay up until 1am to watch
That's just about the most adorable wrench I've ever seen. That was also a huge nut, especially considering how much you cut off of it and still were able to make the whole tool out of it.
9:45 Amazing shot of my mechanics 👏🏻
Thanks a lot :-)
It is the highlight of my month when a new My Mechanics video drops. This video did not disappoint, outstanding work as usual 😀
Same! I saw this drop this morning and have been looking forward to it all day. Incredible!
for real my mechanics my beloved 🫶🫶
To me it's a fine display of the art of turning milling grinding and other skills working metals. This is no amateur's workshop with lathes and cutting machines. But it really is fascinating to watch. I once worked doing a menial job in a Microscope Factory and used to see the turners and millers doing their thing. There wasn't time to stand and stare and take in how skilled they were but now I see why they were higher paid than bench workers.
This amount of precision and elegance in the execution of the work along with the creative mind is amazing.

Absolutely brilliant. My late father used to make minitures like this. This video reminded me of him and the skill he had. Love it !
One of the very few channels that make it seem like all I do in my shop is bang rocks together! Awesome work as always!
Unglaublich! Es ist schön dass es noch Menschen gibt, die solche Präzisionswerkzeuge händisch herstellen können! Tolles Video, vielen Dank!
Danke für das Lob!
Excellent! Also, congratulations on keeping fairly neat and uninjured hands for modelling the tool. That's despite all the metalworking you do, which is quite an injury-fraught undertaking. 👍
When a master meets a piece, he brings the masterpiece.
Thank you, dear MM! Unprecedentedly awesome!
Thank you too!
I was almost disappointed that you didn't have a tiny nut to adjust, but you saved the whole video right at the end.
Adorable.
Little did we know that that final nut was the start of the next miniaturisation loop...
Amazing work as always…ClickSpring would be proud! 👏🤙
We miss you King where are you 😢?
Machining small stuff is actually quite difficult and tests one's abilities to the max in some applications, especially when working with normal sized machinery (hence why you can find miniature lathes that can cost as much as a second hand (good) car). One of my first miniature projects was a small vise. Took me 3 re-tries to get it right. It's not as easy as it looks. One sneeze and you've milled away the whole project.
I came across your video and it was the best 11 minutes of my time watching what you started from and the end of what you made.
You are a very patient and very clever person to even think what you can make from a nut of the size.
You have all the tools at your disposable so yes great vlog and keep on showing your master skills work to a different level.
How much passion for metalworking is needed to create such a small work of art? I am always amazed by your skills.
This makes me smile every time I watch it.
The level of patience it takes to complete a project like this is laudible. That's my biggest obstacle in learning machining right now is getting antsy to reach a finished product.
I almost skipped this video because I didn't think it sounded very interesting compared to other projects. But It was both interesting and impressive, great job!
You never cease to amaze me! You sir, are a master craftsman.
For anyone wondering what's going on with the no uploads. He's been pretty active on Patreon with his current projects.
One of my favorites so far! The amount of work you put into this channel is amazing!
Happy to hear that!
I’m so glad to see this video. The original adjustable wrench restoration is some of my favorite work of yours, and I’m very pleased to see it reprised here. Every step is essential; every action worth the time - the final product is as perfect as it can be.
Thank you very much!

To watch an excellent project being crafted with such knowing hands - just wonderful!
I have a weird obsession with tiny things, and this very much satifies that obsession, amazibg work!!!
I am so glad not only that you made this but that you shared it with us as a video!! I love how it came out. Amazing craftmanship
Thank you so much!
Cant say I instantly watch any other channels new videos immediately except this one. The amount of dedication, precision and attention to details is so enthralling to watch!
All I need to say, is that this person is a master ! Loved the video and the work he made and showed !
I really love your videos. You get right to the point with no fluff. love it.
This is just on a whole new level. I doubt anyone can match this much level of expertise, precision and dedication. Amazing work as always.
after so many "removing sharp edges" scenes, seeing this video's "filing edges sharp" made me feel I woke up in an alternate universe this morning :o)
Amazing job, thank you for a great video!

Der Mann ist für mich ein Genie !! Er kann alles, unfassbar....prima Arbeit 😊😊😮😮
You are unparalleled in your craftsmanship my man absolutely stunning worksmanship I want 1!!
my anxiety levels hit the roof at 0:16 when the tool almost reached the jaws
My first two summers of college I worked for the CB&Q RR as a machinist apprentice. There was a master machinist nicknamed “the watch maker”. Ralph was the most senior machinist. He did all the very, very fine work in brass, stainless steel, monel to repair all the gauges and delicate measuring tools. I was allowed to spend part of my day watching, learning, asking questions. His machines all had jewelers magnifying lamps. He even wore a jewelers loop at times.
Great job. You earned a subscriber.
I've watched all your videos. I haven't seen anyone better than you.
4:59 I was nervous for the little square tower of steel next to that massive end mill 😁. Fantastic work as always!
I was taking just very very light cuts of 0.5mm. It worked out quite well in the end. Was able to get it all done in one operation, took a while though...
Would love to see a video tour of your workshop ! I'd be so interested to see where you've incorporated some of your past restorations into your arsenal of tools that you use to then restore future projects. It'd be like going down a trip on memory lane :)
You can see my shop in a lot of patreon videos.
Incredible! ...and yet, I watched it happen. Truly amazing. I'm enjoying your channel, sir.
You have amazing skills brother
This video makes me so happy. Your work is impeccable, as always, but something about miniature tools just makes my day. I really needed this to finish out my week. MM, you are an inspiration and a madman. Total respect.
Thank you very much!
Are you kidding me with this? That is the most amazing thing I've seen in a very long time. Thanks for sharing your enviable talents.
Haven't seen you in a while, hope everything is ok.
Bonjour, La réalisation est fascinante mais on ne peut pas s'empêcher de penser au temps passé pour reproduire "manuellement" un objet industriel.
Ça a été un grand plaisir de voir la réussite de votre fabrication.
I'm sorry, but this has to be one of the cutest things I've seen on TH-cam. I kept thinking my eyes were playing tricks on me, especially during the filing, that you're working on a tiny piece, and not that you have the hands of a giant 🤣
Superb work, MM, as ever 👌 Thank you for doing what you do x
As usual, incredible work my mechanics. You never disappoint us. And if this tiny wrench was for sell I'd buy it with no hesitation.
Thank you very much!
MM needed 6 working days for this project. For the working time, one would have to calculate at least 200 EUR per day, and thus this tiny adjustable wrench would cost 1,200 EUR. The material costs are not included in this calculation. I think almost all buyers would hesitate.😉
Brilliant as always.. also, "filing edges sharp" is something i never thought i would read on one of your videos..
So good to see what can be done when you have the skill, the patience and the tools available.
Great job.
The Skill and Ingenuity is beyond Amazing. What is even more amazing is the photography. Well lit, In frame, steady,
clear and always in focus!
At the end I just started laughing. It was embarrassing good. Ridiculous precision. I could not handle anymore such perfection. And the tool is sooo cute
That has to be one of the best and most satisfying of video's I have watched on TH-cam, thanks.
When he’s not restoring, he makes some of the coolest gadgets out of every day parts!
The precision and perfection with which you work is so unique, the only thing is the long wait between your videos. I consider your work to be the work of God.
Delicious and uplifting, another meditation on your professionalism. Thanks for sharing.
I must have watched this 10 times now. Great stuff !!
You’re work is remarkable, particularly looking at what you choose to do. There’s some real poetry transforming an object that is rotated into a an object that rotates! Best of all, you’ve changed my approach to my own projects. I’m trying things I never would have conceived of before I saw what you do. Bravo!

Such a talented people livin out there.
Felt like asmr watching the M2 thread getting made. Had the volume up too loud when the hacksaw started going and dropped my phone in surprise lawl
I love your work, it’s so precise. Had you started this video with you chucking the nut in the vice and then cut to a working wrench followed by an “et voila” I wouldn’t question it.
Absolutely enjoyable to watch that transformation. I wasn't even doubting you could do it even a little... Perfect!
Awesome!! Love all the hand work, true art. To hell with CAD and CNC and 3d printing !
You work hard and respect your followers I am very grateful for your work I wanted to be like you you is a exseple for others
