  • I got my hands on the Olympus E-M1 Mark II flagship camera and took it out to shoot surfing to test how fast this new beast really is. And I share some of my thoughts about it with you in this video.
    UPDATE: ProCapture does work with C-AF when set to Low Burst mode! Thanks everyone for pointing that out.

    Thanks Chris, your style of telling us a story is genuine, fresh and helpful. I'm waiting my new em1.2 in the next days, I think I'm going to have few excuses to take bad pictures with this camera...
    Have a wonderful new year!

    Great videos! I like the livecomp mode, but half sec isnt as fast as I hoped it would be on the mark II, do you know if Olympus might improve it in firmware update in the future? Since the first E-M1 could shoot at this speed, I imagine that shorter speed shouldnt be a problem for the mark II.

    Hi Chris and congrats for your videos (and shoots). I've just passed to M1 Mark II and can't set (on C-AF) that small rectangular green marks following the subject, even if I choose 121 point focus. I just can see one in tracking mode. Is my setting wrong? Thanks for help!

    Great video Chris. Love the photos and I'm looking forward to the future reviews about the camera as I want to buy it myself. I am interested specifically in the dynamic range. Are the presets going to work with any camera profile? or just with Olympus?

      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your kind comment.
      I'll try to make more videos about the E-M1 Mark II. But don't want to drift too much into the technical talk on my channel. I'll try to incorporate it into future Adventure Photography On Location episodes too.
      The presets work on images from all cameras. Always best to start off with a RAW file of course to get the most out of the presets. Then adjust to your liking / style.

    Chris thanks for your inspiring and terrific videos. I’m torn with so many brands having a ken eye on Fuji however in the eighties my first camera was the trip sec aswell as a Pentax spotmatic which I adored. Please can you suggest a starting point for re-investing in Olympus system- the OMD 1 LOOKS AMAIZING however a little costly. Would a mark 2 or three be a good stratijng point to get cracking again…its all in the lens I guess!? I do however believe the robustness of these is unsurpassed aswell as pentax KI.

    hello chris
    I did enjoy your 300 surf shoot.
    I have a couple of questions and since you say you are cloaer to olympus perhaps you can voice my request.
    I am in a position to soon buy a new EM1 v2 and at the moment it seems that the kit lens is the 12-40mm pro.
    I would like Olympus to enable the kit to be optional either the 7-14 pro or the 25 1.2 pro.
    In addition I am prepared to consider buying the 75 1.8 and four-thirds 150 f2 as a package.
    Although I would like the 300 you reviewed briefly, that is unlikely for me.
    What would you advise?
    andrei

    Looks promising!
    I'll definitely get the MkII whenever it will be available from one of my trusted dealers :)
    BTW, how do you find the new position of the AEL/AFL button (flipped lever)?
    Does it feel more natural and less strenuous to reach/use than that on the MkI ?
    I surely hope so, as I have resorted to the Fn1 button for back-button AF on the MkI so far...

      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Erik,
      Great to hear that you will be ordering one. You won't regret it ;-)
      I LOVE the new position of the AEL/AFL button. As I use back button focussing on it and it feels MUCH more comfortable than on the E-M1 (Mark I). Hope that replies your question.

      Depends on what you’re shooting. I’d say experiment a little and see how it works for you and the subject you’re capturing. There isn’t really a ‘one setting for everything’ here.

    I'm truly looking forward to shooting my sighthound racing and RC-boat racing with this cam. Was absolutely happy with my E-M1 since firmware-update 3.0 but the new MKII seems to really make a difference. Unfortunately I can't afford both the cam and the 300 4.0 but the year is long, isn't it?

    Hello Chris, I know you made this wonderful video all of eight months ago so you're hardly likely to see this message let alone reply to it. Just wanted to say how reassuring it was for me as I've recently bought this very camera and the 300mm lens. Took it out for the first action of the rugby season on Saturday and overall was very pleased with the results. However, found what you mention - I couldn't keep up - the camera was focussing faster than my reaction time. You said something about slowing it down - how exactly do you do that? Also, were you using continuous focus or the tracking? I started with the latter and then moved to continuous. Was so liberating not to lug around a massive DSLR (though not made the complete switch yet - coupling the Olympus with my Canon 7D Mkii and 70-200 for the closer shots - hopefully there'll be a OMD Mkiii in the not too distant future and then the plan is to make the swap complete!) Thank you!

    im getting this camera for Macro photography....with 60mm macro and a ring flash this is gonna be a beast ...Nothing can scape/fly from me :))
    about the price i have to say its all bcoz of M43.and ppl dont really have much experience with the nowadays M43's. i had D810 and worked with 1Dxii and 5D .... but then i used G85 and it was an amazing camera for the price and then played with em5 and i fell in love with em1 mk i . so with all the great reviews and the Amazing IBIS and Fast Focus and fully alt. touch screen and....
    the 2k$ is worth Every penny.
    (at the end of day its all about taking a good shots and e
    happy with your gears,...thats all it matters)
    happy shooting all

      Instead of the ring flash, why not wait for the new Olympus macro flash (model STF-8)? I think it's supposed to be coming out next year, January I think, and it's the first weather-sealed flash of its kind.

    you gave a good impression of what the camera can do, thank you.
    One thing though, re pro capture (at 4:17): Panasonic GX8 can do this as well, the EM 1 II is not the only one.
    they call it "preburst", but it only works with 8 mp pics. great feature!

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Glad I could give you some insight.
      I've heard about that function on the GX8.
      Not quite 60fps at a full 20MP RAW though ;-) no compromise on the E-M1 Mark II there.

    • @aturatur1
      @aturatur1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      right, it does 40 fps approx., but no RAWs with preburst. thats one reason I am considering a switch from GX8 to the EM1 mk 2.

    How do you think this camera would do focusing wise/iso performance in let's say a high school football game at night? 6400iso clean enough? Very interested in trying this camera with a 150mm f2 combo.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Tyler,
      I only use it outdoors. While ISO6400 is always going to be producing some noise on a m43 sensor, I've heard that people have gotten very acceptable results with the E-M1 Mark II. Especially comparing it to previous generations. I think this is a good question for the E-M1 Mark II Facebook Group. I'm sure you'll get a lot of sample images from people to check out.

    • @tylervincentphoto
      @tylervincentphoto 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Eyre-Walker thanks for the response. I'll definitely check that out. Really like the idea of the compression this camera and a 150mm lens would provide being equivalent to a 300mm on my Nikon which is so much heavier and difficult to maneuver with. Also the fact that the 150mm is f2, not 2.8 may make it so I don't have to bump it up to 6400 at some fields. Anyway, great video. I subscribed to your channel! Keep up the good work my friend.

      Chris Eyre-Walker Photography I have the lumix gm5 and that camera is a couple of years old. I think it will be a world of difference when I try out the new beast. Do you have some tips when shooting in snowy landscapes?
      I will checka that strap out. Thanks!

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh yes. you'll be blown away by it haha
      I think the most important thing when shooting in the snow is to be careful to not underexpose the image. The light meter tends to say the image is overexposed even while it's not. Try shooting in manual mode and check your first images before shooting more.
      Definitely shoot in RAW to capture the maximum dynamic range - especially in an extremely contrasty environment like a snowy landscape.

    Really enjoyed your video, thanks, Chris. I'm awaiting the new camera in the UK but one thing I don't understand is why the Pro Capture feature is limited to Oly lenses only. My long lens is the Panny/Leica 100-400, and I'm baffled as to why I shouldn't be able to use this feature. Any idea why - or can you find out? Many thanks Paul

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul,
      Didn't actually know it didn't work with other brand lenses. Very unfortunate! I'll ask them about it and reply here ASAP. There might be a technical reason? Or possibly just a brand thing... (let's hope not!)

    • @paulgraber4636
      @paulgraber4636 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Eyre-Walker Photography That would be really helpful, Chris. My understanding is that the Pro Capture feature is greyed out if any non-Oly lens is attached. I do hope this can be fixed in a firmware update because it's a real shame for those of us who really like the 100-400.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul,
      I got a response from Olympus regarding Pro Capture with other brands:
      The reason why Pro Capture only works with Olympus mFT lenses is because there's specific code/firmware that's needed to communicate between the lens and the camera body for Pro Capture to work optimally - hence it'd explain why it doesn't work with Pana lenses as Pana wouldn't have the right code/language.
      This might change in the future though.
      Sorry to disappoint you on that one... Seems like it's technical limitation.

ISO is right at 6400. Noise reduction settings? I've got a lot of noise. Options? Any help/suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tough one. I've never shot indoor sports and most of my images are shoot in ideal light conditions and around 200-800 ISO and there's no need for noise reduction. So I'm not a specialist on that... there's a lot of great information and sofware out there on it though.

    Great video, question - did you consider a tripod for the surf shots or even monopod or is it just not necessary?

    • @chriseyrewalker

      not necessary.
      The sensor stabilisation + lens stabilisation in the 300mm f/4 PRO is so good it almost freezes the frame in place once activated.

    Cool review and camera Chris. I'm just an old guy and casual amateur so I wouldn't have a need for one as my E-M5II suits me fine, but I think considering the improvements and technology (not to mention Olympus build quality) the price isn't outrageous compared to other top end professional cameras. I can't help but wonder if negative reactions to the price are more because it's a micro four thirds camera.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Maybe you're right...
      Fortunately the sensor alone isn't what makes a good camera! And Olympus has taken the sensor AND technology in this camera to a completely new level. I think that a lot of the 'hate' for the high price is from people not knowing about the capabilities this cameras has to offer.

    Hi Chris, I have recently purchased a Panasonic G85 on order currently and I was thinking of purchasing the Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens to do street and landscape photography. I do have the 12mm-60mm lens as part of the kit with the 25mm f1.7. I understand the 12-60 will be wider at 12mm however it's a f3.5-5.6 so would it be beneficial to lose slightly at the wider end and pick up a faster lens?
    thanks in advance.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alex,
      There will definitely be an improvement in sharpness with the prime lens. And if you're ever shooting in darker streets or in places with less light the wider aperture will also help for sure. It's also a nice and small lens which makes it super compact and discrete when shooting in the streets.
      So yes, I'd say go for it.

    so, OMD EM1 mk II with 300m f4 is focal change to 600mm f4 right? why micro 4/3 lens to micro 4/3 camera focal length different?

    • @chriseyrewalker

      Yes, the focal length is doubled on micro 4/3s. The reason is, that the sensor is half the size.

    Hey Chris, the PRO capture mode works the same way like the 60 fps with single AF so probably they can't make it with C-AF now, it's very very fast, but probably they can update the firmware to work with AEL/AFL button.
    One personal note, I think it will be great if you can use some external recorder/mic for the audio. Now there is a big difference in the volume of your voice and the music in the video, otherwise i like it a lot and great photos, hope more are coming soon.

    AFAIK, Pro Capture only works w/ Zuiko m4/3 lenses (not w/ native 4/3 lenses either).Moreover, I believe half press for activating it is resrtricted to the shutter button only, as half press does not exist on any other button (i.e. AEL/AFL for back-button focusing).

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment Erik.
      I've tried changing it, but I think you're right about the Pro Capture feature being locked to the shutter button.
      As for the lens restriction: I've asked Olympus technician for an explanation. Will get back to you about that as soon as I know.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      response from Olympus:
      The reason why Pro Capture only works with Olympus mFT lenses is because there's specific code/firmware that's needed to communicate between the lens and the camera body for Pro Capture to work optimally - hence it'd explain why it doesn't work with Pana lenses as Pana wouldn't have the right code/language.
      This might change in the future.

    How has this camera performed on cloudy days when still requiring fast shutter speed? I live a a mostly cloudy environment where that is a concern for me. Love your content. Thank you in advance!

    • @pinakibhattacharyya8936
      @pinakibhattacharyya8936 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that depends on the glass how fast ur glass is. Being MFT or FF exposure is exactly the same for both the sensor (I am not going even in the debate of DOF and ISO Performance). Also depends on what u want to capture on a cloudy day if it's landscape then no problem but if you want to capture a flying bird or jet then I need light because most of the super tele's are not that ultra fast (f1.8 - f2.8) ... One thing I can tell u is I have got tack sharp image even 2s shutter handheld yes handheld, the IBIS is that solid!!

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to agree here.
      I all depends on what you subject is and how fast your minimal shutter speed needs to be to capture it.
      I can’t think of many things that are too fast too shoot on a cloudy day.

    Do you know, OR can you find out the resolving power of the Mark II sensor?
    I have been trying a 300mm f/4.0 and it is tack sharp, but when I add the 1.4 multiplier lens, it gets fuzzy. Any suggestions?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Scott,
      I've noticed the same with mine. I had to go into the lens settings and adjust the focussing distance a little by -2.
      Check your photos and see if you can spot if the lens tends to focus too close or a little too far - even if you know it's 100% on. Then go into the Mk II menu and adjust and test it. That has really helped me getting consistently in-focus shots.
      Unsure about the resolving power of the Mark II. I'll ask at Olympus and get back to you about that.
      Hope my adivce above helps.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a function that let's you pick how fast you want the camera to refocus if a new closer / or more distant movement is detected on your selected focus point.
      You can set your camera to either refocus faster on new objects, or keep the focus at the same distance for longer. (this is great for when there is a lot of movement happening in the foreground and you don't want the camera to constantly change the focus.

  • @tonigenes5816
    @tonigenes5816 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chris, first of all congratulations for the video.
    Second thing, there is an important setting on E-M1 II camera which you negleted to check or explain : "RLS Priority C = ON". This settings affects C-AF precision because it gives priority to the speed against precision. This means - even if the camera is not perfectly in focus, it will make the photo to save time. I think is recomandable to disable this option in order to have precision, even if there is a risc of having lower fps rate.

    • @erikaaseth44
      @erikaaseth44 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regarding RLS; I find that "RLS Priority S = OFF" doesn't work w/back-button focusing (ie. AEL/AFL or Fn1).
      "RLS Priority" seems to be tied to the shutter button alone. Which (at second thought) is kinda logical anyway,
      as back-button focusing can be looked upon as a partly manual focusing procedure (although utilizing AF),
      that separates focusing from the actual shooting.

    • @chriseyrewalker

    Why no one states in their review that Olympus EM1-II CapurePro feature will
    not work on Panasonic 100-400 lens. It will work only on Olympus lenses.
    Also there is bug with the Panasonic 100-400 lens when the range switch is set to 5m-infinity. In this mode the camera will not shoot when you press the shutter. It may shoot 1-2 Sec later with all the optics in the lens shaking generating a totally blurred image. Setting the switch to infinity will resolve the problem. This problem didn't existed on the old EM1

    So, is the camera overkill for landscape?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No absolutely not. The sensor stabilisation alone allows me to capture shots I wouldn't be able to get that easily with any other camera (handheld, low shutter speeds as slows as 2-3sec in dark canyons for example)
      Then there's the hi-res mode. Which turns this tiny camera into a 80MP monster.
      Then the amazing portability of this system. Beats any Full Frame system for size and weight.
      Of course LiveComp is an amazing feature not found in any other system either. Great for night skies and long exposures in the dark.
      It's really packed with featured and potential power waiting to be put to use. If you see how far Olympus stretched the capabilities of the original E-M1 with free software updates I reckon the E-M1 Mark II has plenty of useful features to come.

    it is E-M1 line level, just like mk1 was when it came out and when it got FW.4.0!
    you can expect it to get lots of things with firmware updates.
    and wait when E-M2/E-M1mk3 comes out in 3-4 years.... it is already under development and will change again the game. now the mk2 is just best you can get as m4/3 system body.
    It is strange that Olympus went backwards in many areas, like max flash sync is now 1/250 instead 1/320, and swivel display instead tilt, menu being B/W instead color coded (at least letters), removed the tracking gate (allow one box to be locked in target), remove small AF point capability, remove MySets (bindable to Fn buttons instead just mode dial) etc.
    then they didn't really push limits like put there like 8-16GB RAM so buffer would be insane! Now just 77 frames and that is it.
    not taken fastest card format like that what Nikon and Sony now uses... and staying in SD.
    oh and add one extra Fn to front so the would have been three buttons....

      I would have to say the swivel screen is not a backward step. I went from an E-30 4/3rd to the E-M1 m4/3 and the one thing I really did miss was the articulating screen. Getting the camera into angles and positions a yoga master could not dream of. Flash sync is a bit of a downer if that is indeed correct. Hopefully a FW update could fix that.

      That was the Fstop Ajna. But I’d recommend the Atlas Athlete Pack these days. Check out my review on it.

    I do think the camera is just amazing. I'm planning to get it for video, but am incredibly excited about possibilities for action shooting. However, given that it is a MFT and there are just inherent image issues at that sensor size, the price is out of line.
    Even as good as it is, it should be priced, imo $300-$500 less. $2k is simply too much for the format.
    Awesome review!

      Thanks for your comment Trevor.
      All I can say is: try it. Give this camera a go and see how you feel about it then. Image quality has been sufficient (for me) since the E-M1 (Mark I). But what really impresses me is the raw speed and technical advancements Olympus made with this camera. Nothing a sheet of numbers or some video review can get across. If any other camera priced more or less expensive had the same speed and focussing capabilities AND technological advancements than this then I'd say: Good point. The price is too high.'
      But who this camera really is aiming to compete against is the speed and accuracy of the big horses from Canon and Nikon and those are a hell of a lot more expensive. And I don't think any better at it.
      So yes, if you really need that full frame sensor in combination with the speed than go ahead and get the D5 or 1D-X II. If not, then give this camera a go ;-)

      This issue I don't think is one of capabilities. Even at first glance its technology cup runneth over. It's doing everything from still to video on a very high level.
      The issue is one of market. MFT is an 'established' market now. Panasonic has played a pivotal role in that with the GH4 which set a bar for certain aspects of video. And now the GH5 is going to raise that bar even higher, and in all likelyhood at a pricepoint lower than the Olympus.
      When you cross the $2k threshold people start expecting FF because of the existing market and players like Nikon and Canon. And those sensor won't do nearly what the Olympus will, but they are going to give you an ISO ceiling well above Olympus and a higher resolution ceiling as well.
      If they can push the market in a new direction, it will pay off. But there's a real risk of alienating people who would really be interested in this camera. They are not price insensitive. :)

      While I'm sure that the GH5 will be an amazing camera, it's strengths lie in the video features it provides. It still remains to be seen what type of specs it ends up with, whether the stabilization will be in the same ballpark as the E-M1 II (I'm doubtful that it will, especially seeing the issues with the G80/81/85). And I'd venture to say that pricing wise it'll be the same as the E-M1 II, I'd be shocked if it were less, especially since early reports seem to indicate a decent enough demand for a $1,999 MFT camera, Panasonic could be leaving a lot of money on the table if they price it less.

      I agree with both of you.
      The GH4 has definitely put the m4/3 cameras on the table and shown that they are a type of camera to be reckoned with.
      But like Je Park says, I seriously doubt that the GH5 will be any cheaper than the E-M1 Mark II. The camera market is going down the drain, inflation and the steady rise of all camera equipment and the increased pressure to come up with innovation won't allow for the next flagship cameras to be much cheaper than 2k...
      So, yes, it's an (unfortunately) expensive m4/3 camera, but that has to do with a lot more than just the new features and specs we find in those cameras. But at least the specs are worth it if you really need them.

      Well, it's a flagship with features and speed even the D5 and the 1Dx MKII(?) haven't got. So I'd rather regard it as a deal than as expensive.
      Sensor size definitely isn't the only factor deciding a camera's price

      It actually works with C-AF in ProCapture. All you have to do is set the burst rate to 18fps (instead of 60fps).

    2k is still to much for a 2x crop sensor. The restricted low light is a big hit on the flexibility of the camera. I would like to see it start in the 1.5k range. Then it would be a direct competitor to the Lumix G series. If I am going to spend 2K then I will grab a Nikon D500
