I use it for walking live streams too. Stream is 720p because of mobile internet stability issues, but same time I can record 4K60p and upload it later.
I just dont see any issue in uploading 4K60p. Anyone can select quality they want. Fortunately GH5 can downscale HDMI from 4K to 1080i for my mobile encoder.
I always questioned myself whether the GH5 was the correct decision, now thanks to this video, I realise how perfect a choice it was!! Cheers guys thank you for showing me some awesome tips that I didn't realise my camera could even do!!
Brilliant review. Not often do I have the attention span to watch a 34 minute review but this was worth every second. Clear, authoritative and concise information about every key fact of this camera makes this my favourite review yet. I will be buying this camera now on the strength of your review. Thankyou.
Great job guys - you guys deliver real information compellingly well. As a long time GH 2,3, 4 and now 4 months 5 user: The only downsides from my gh4 and 5s is certain clients being put off by the compact size of the camera (it doesn't happen often) - sometimes CEOS or agencies ( and their team of minions) NEED to see a C300, fs 7 or anything bigger to make them feel important. I just throw a cheap mattebox and cage on mine with some audio modules hanging off it, ditch the pancakes for the larger zooms and clients generally wont feel disrespected. But when I am gathering content / cutaways for myself the small form factor is totally liberating. I have the panny 12-35, 35-100 but am coming around to the look of the Olympus glass and focus action (the Oly 7-14 is a real estate gem) - might have to look at that Olympus 12-100!
Great review guys. I've had my GH5 for years, but every time I watch you guys, I learn more and more. I have mostly used my GH5 as a picture camera, but tomorrow, I am filming a "drive by" burthday for my grandson. No birthday parties, as we are on lock-down here on L.I. N.Y. I hope my brief video comes out good enough to share with family and friends. Thanks for your help.
bloody legends you are guys. this is the first of your reviews i've seen and i'm so happy to actually give my time watching people who actually know what they're talking about and deserve my scarce time and attention. subscribed.
We took a GH5 to europe with us and a PXW-x70 (bought both from you guys), I'm almost certain that we busted out the x70 one time. The biggest reason was, if we didn't know what the situation was going to be like at the venue we were going, the stabilization inside the camera allows us to know that we will have useable and stable footage. People moan about the autofocus, here and there it was troublesome, but with literally every camera, the autofocus is not perfect, I would never have noticed autofocus issues if other people weren't complaining about it; you just have to know how to use the autofocus modes.
Quit honestly I was concerned about the auto focus but when I need it I just make sure I'm on f11 or above and I have no issues. When using the camera on my tripod I've honestly turned off auto focus and put it on manual and use wifi tethering with the iPhone app to focus. This guarantees I'm in focus close up and at distance. I don't think you mentioned focus peaking.
I am only a stills photographer and I bought the GH5 as my action camera - mainly for wildlife photography where it excels. I have to say that the ergonomics are excellent and if you are a serious/pro photographer this is an excellent package for stills.
2 years later, and with the GH6 not far away, the GH5 is still the standard other manufacturers are trying to beat, and with varying degrees of success. The A7S III is arguably the only camera that has finally exceeded the GH5 video quality/frame rates/usefulness and versatility, but still lags in important features like anamorphic support, shutter angle, stop motion etc etc. It is also evidence of who is leader of the pack in the way the A7S III copied the menu structure and methodology from the GH5. And now, 2 years later, I am looking at purchasing a GH5 despite the impending drop of its replacement. I figure that I may decide to get the GH6 in the long run, but the GH5 will remain a workhorse Bcam for years to come, so I will not have lost anything. Going beyond cameras, this conversational style review, after 2 years, is also still the exemplar of the very best review on any camera. Other reviewers have tried to reach this level, but none have fully succeeded in reaching this quality of discussion and the way it reveals both the strengths and weaknesses of the camera, and what that means in real world use. I fully expect this review to remain the benchmark against which other reviews are compared for many years to come. It is fitting that a truly great camera is met by an equally great review. Thank you guys.
GREAT review! Very thorough. Thanks for the clarification on 8-bit versus 10-bit. Great to see Jordan in front of the camera too. Excellent give-and-take for a real conversation on the good and bad of the GH5. Thank you!
From South Korea! Didn’t even skip even single moment during the watching. This review just convinced me to purchase gh5. Even though AF is gonna be main issue, firmware 2.1 make much better improvements. Thanks for your work guys!
Was waiting for this review, very informative as always! I have had a GH5 since it came out in April and got V-Log L for it as well. I used to have a GH4 (with a Atomos Ninja 2 for 1080p 10-bit 4:2:2 and V-Log L) I so knew what I might expect from using it. I also knew from the contrast detect focus for video, how to focus manually and never to rely on AF. From my experience from using a GH5: 1. Less shadow noise over the GH4. This is great and lets me have more options in pushing shadows in editing, especially using V-Log L. I have noticed some magenta blocks in shadows when shooting V-Log L which can take time to remove in editing (maybe macro blocking?) 2. No reddish color cast. I noticed the GH4 had a reddish color cast to the images/video which the GH5 no longer has. I also noticed skin tones slooked a little orange on the GH4 too. With the GH5, there are better skin tones, but I still prefer RAW photos or V-Log L for best skin tones, which do look quite good. 3. Colors are defiantly improved and better than on the GH4. I still am no overly keen on the colors other than in V-Log L or RAW as they tend to have a slight cool cast which I am no over keen on. 4. More detail and sharper. I have defiantly noticed an increase in sharpness and detail over the GH4. 5. Auto focus is a bit better in video, but not useful. I was prepared for this as I knew how contrast only focus works, especially coming from a GH4 and manually focus 90% of the time, so I am not the kind of person who was expecting anything great with it or need it, except when I am taking in front of the camera. 6. I like the addition of a waveform monitor, but I find it takes up too much of the screen so haven't used it. Probably limitations of a waveform monitor on a small screen. 7. IBIS is great to have. When I was using a GH4, I stuck to IS only lenses for video and photos to avoid shake, but now I have 4 lenses and only one has IS, and have started using Olympus lenses such as the 12-40 f/2.8 Pro and 60mm Macro which don't have IS, to replace my Panasonic lenses I have which did (12-35 MK I and 30mm Macro) even used a Metabones T Smart Adaptor with an old Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro lens I have (original without IS) and had no real issues with shake. I have found on wide angle lenses when shooting video while walking, there is a slight wobble at the edges of the image with the IBIS, but far better than not having it. I was able to take a handheld wide angle photo in a forest in low light for 1/6 second with the Olympus 12-40 at f/4 and it was sharp. Couldn't do that without the IBIS. 8. I love the addition of focus transitions. I always wanted to do focus pulls with my GH4, but couldn't due to fly by wire lenses having no hard stops or focus distance indicators on the lenses, but now this makes it much easier. I do wish you could see your exposure while in this mode as when I am shooting V-Log L, I always like to make sure I am 1 stop overexposed and can't always tell if the lighting suddenly changes (I rarely shoot in controlled lighting and shoot outdoors). I have used this feature a few times already and will again. 9. 10-bit internally. I really like that it can do internal 10-bit, especially at 4K. I have recently tried the 400Mbps ALL-I with a ADATA Premier One V90 256GB SD and really I didn't find any improvement in image quality over the 150Mbps, I did notice the motion may be slightly better. I noticed than when editing, in the timeline I go to any point of the ALL-I video and if it was in focus and sharp, there wasn't any blur, except for objects moving faster than the camera shutter speed, but with the 150Mbps, there was slightly more blur. Other than that, I saw no other improvements over 150Mbps. 10. I have shot more photos with this than I have with my GH4 and quite like the results you can get in RAW and take lots of macro photos with it and recently have been looking around for fungi and getting lots of shots, many in low light with slow shutter speeds and low ISO to keep noise down, and getting very good, sharp results. The photo AF is really good and quite fast, especially with Panasonic lenses that have fast AF. I have used 6K photo and I could see that it could be useful, if the AF was better as that could be useful for sports or fast moving wildlife so you can pull that one interesting image from the rest. I do wish they had kept the built in flash as although I didn't use it much on the GH4, there were times having it was quite useful, but I have learned to work without it. I have also shot time lapses with it and on a fully charged battery, 20MP, shooting 1 second bursts, I shot a sunrise time lapse that way and I was getting 7877 images before the battery died. Overall I wish Panasonic had have put in phase detect focusing with fast accurate video focus, and had at least 1 stop better low light/ 1 stop better dynamic range, and I hope that comes to the next GH camera, but overall I really like it.
Great review guys. I fall into the likely very small group of people who is thrilled to have tethering and use this camera for studio photography. Like you said, it is great that Panasonic adds features in, just because they can, even when it seems like a small minority requires or will use them. I used to always just use the WiFi on my GH4 to remote transfer files to my desktop as I was doing studio shots but it was super slow transferring so it is nice to have the USB-C connection now. Of course, I also do video work with it which is why I haven't moved to a different system, but its how well rounded this camera is that makes it appealing to me. If I had to pick two categories where I find it to be lacking they would be wedding and wildlife photography only because of the poor low light performance. Everything else I use it for has been fantastic.
+Blair Altman Having played with the tethering more since we recorded this review, I think it’s a huge deal as well! Not only for photography, but for recording software tutorials as well! Jordan @ TCSTV
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. From a still photographers perspective it actually sounds like an equally if not better cam then the E-M1.2. C-AF is something that has got me worried for shooting sports and birds but might be worth a try anyway. GH5 all in all seems to have the best ergonomics in the business and the best use of touchscreen features. Thanks again!
That was one seriously excellent review- and a joy to watch throughout. (even though I skipped the photo part :-) Compliments to you guys! Really curious to see/hear what your setup for run 'n gun is- walking around with the Sigma 18-35 + mics without any support?
You guys are the best. I don't want people to come and see my channel for reviews. I do impression videos but if they want a good detailed, objective technical review, you guys are the only people to go see. Stills and video by the way!
I've spent a good deal of time over the last couple of weeks considering whether to purchase a Micro Four Thirds camera, and this one in particular. This review has made it much easier to make a decision. Doesn't matter what I've decided, only that this review has covered all of the major issues in a way that I have not seen rivaled elsewhere. It has been very helpful.
This was just so well done - thank you! I have watched many, many camera reviews on TH-cam and yours is among the best if not the best. Please keep up the great work :-)
What do you think of the 4K30 HLG H265 HEVC recording mode at 72mbit/s bitrate? I wish somehow it could do 4K60 HLG H265 HEVC at sub-150mbit/s bitrate. Since the mode is 10bit 4:2:0 and not 4:2:2 I am somehow hoping it might happen, but I guess it will not. That codec may be painful for post production but it works to upload directly to TH-cam which is amazing which means you can record HLG/HDR in a small filesize that works to upload directly to TH-cam! Just wish 4K60 was possible in that. I filmed one handheld test with 2.0 firmware and it seems the autofocus is now much more reliable, still though there is maybe just a little bit of hunting, or slightly slow autofocus performance still, I hope it will be good enough for me I might soon finally buy this camera with a Dual IS 2 lense for game changing video image stability. I just have to make sure how Canon GX10 and Sony AX700 compare with the autofocus performance and the overall video quality.
Awesome still. 6 years later. What I love about this camera the most is that it seems to stand the test of time. The gh5 never feels like an old camera. I use one as a backup for my s5, and it just doesn't seem like I'm keeping something around just because I don't want to let it go. Honestly, I just bought it recently, for $467, and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Fun to watch this review, to see that Panasonic created something amazing almost a decade ago. Well, just over a half a decade. :-)
You guys are the best camera reviewers out there. I wish you would produce camera courses to sell. A GH5 Course on how to setup the camera, and go over each feature would be awesome!!
Great review from real users! Your experiences from real world use cases set your reviews apart from so many other tech-testers, who only compare specs or concentrate on vlogging.
You two guys inspired me to get back into photography. All you haters out there stop clowning these guys...they are literally some of the best reviewers on YT period. Great job guys...try and talk just a bit slower so you can have a more authentic back and forth, other than that fantastic job keep it up!
Ive never given a fuck to watch anyone on youtube for more than 3 minutes without skipping to their demo shots and since I'm looking to buy a GH5.. I found myself watching a very relevant video from start to finish. Thank you!
I got an impression from this (late) review, that you there was some kind of disagreement between you two about the camera. And it was interesting to see Jordan dominating the discussion. The beast has been woken up! 😉
Ah, you can always count on quality stuff from TCSTV. Another epic video. I do like your unbiased comments for the auto focus tracking and low light issue. The GH4 is great, the GH5 is even better. For vlogging and low light work, choose other gear for that.
As someone who chooses the smaller cameras over cinema cameras for the form factor and versatility, the image stabilization is on of the most important aspects of a camera. I appreciate the time you gave it in the review.
Great review. Definitely worth the wait. So in M43 ville is it true that if you lean more towards photos the EM1-Mk II is a better choice whereas if you lean more toward video the GH5 is the way to go?
When you switch between the photo mode and movie mode at 25:11, your GH5 does it flawlessly. However, when I do it on mine, the screen turns off for a split second. Does anyone else have this issue?
Great video! I've never considered micro 4/3rds, but this looks like a great all-rounder camera for producing TH-cam content. Videos like this remind me why you guys are my favorite photography channel on TH-cam. :)
Thank you for this GH5 review and I hope the firmware updates keep coming to it. I am definitely getting this camera within the next four months. Along with the Nikon D750
Great review gents. What's your workflow for editing 4:2:2 footage? We will go ahead and try the GH5 on our show for a few weeks to see how it fits into our workflow.
Nice to hear what I have been saying for years. Don't use LOG unless your scene needs the DR. Natural on gh5 is fantastic. And switch to vlog if the shot needs all that headroom.
It definitely is a GREAT still camera. I have a gallery full of images I love from my GH5. I rarely do video, actually. And regarding low light (higher ISO), sure it's not as good as the larger sensors BUT I find way too many people who don't use auto ISO correctly and they end up shooting something at 1/60th of a second and high ISO when you could have easily gotten away with ISO 400 at 1/15th of a second. Obviously it depends on your subject (moving or not), but really...learn how to use auto ISO correctly. :-) Don't set it too high unless you NEED to. Mine is set at 400 max and I rarely find cases where I need to go higher than that. I have my Nikon Df set low too. Just because you CAN shoot high ISO doesn't mean you really need to. Not sure if it's ok to post this here, but this is my large GH5 gallery I mentioned: www.thephotographyhobbyist.com/CAMERAGEAR/Panasonic-GH5-Gallery/ Thanks for the reviews, guys...keep it up.
TheCameraStoreTV .... it would be great if you give an updated FZ2500 experience (may be sony rx10mk4 comparison).... i love this FZ2500... love from Bangladesh
Very informative review. I want to invest in a good camera that shoots 4k and is good for stills...have been going back and forth on the Nikon D500 and the GH5. I'm really leaning toward the GH5. I don't have any lenses...should I go with the Metabones Speedbooster and purchase full frame lenses (canon 18-35) or go with the lenses Panasonic makes for this camera? I want to take advantage of the internal stabilization...would I get this using the speedbooster/canon lens setup? Are there any disadvantages using this type of setup? Thanks for your help...please excuse my lack of knowledge about all this stuff. Again, great review....very helpful.
As usual, fantastic. Good work you two. I aways enjoy your insight, knowledge, and presentation. Considered the gh5 but went xt2. Pics are my hook. Can't wait for the next one. Ya'll are better than Abbot and Costello. Keep em flyin.
Awesome review. I went into the store a couple months ago and jokedly belly ached about no GH5 review. Well worth the wait. Although it did not influence me to get a GH5, bought it when it first came out, it did help me gain a renewed appreciation. Makes me wonder what a GH6 will be like?
So, I have a GH4 and GX85 and was going to get a Nikon D750 strictly for stills. Should I leap into a whole new system and glass and all or does the GH5 have what it takes to stand up to a full frame for stills...and particularly for low light stills such as events, weddings, etc.? (professionally) Thanks!
For weddings and events, there is no reason to avoid the Nikon, having said that, a GH5 with some fast Olympus, Leica, or Canon EF mount glass plus Metabones speedbooster will cover that brief with excellent results.
Looking to buy my first pro video camera and found you guys. You sure do know your stuff. This has helped me even though I only understood maybe 50% of what you said. Thanks guys loved the blog :-)
For the people wondering. We do use 2 x GH5 for the live streams :P
I use it for walking live streams too. Stream is 720p because of mobile internet stability issues, but same time I can record 4K60p and upload it later.
Must be nice:(
Why ":("?
We recorded at 1080p 60 and Transmit at 720p through the capture card.
I just dont see any issue in uploading 4K60p. Anyone can select quality they want. Fortunately GH5 can downscale HDMI from 4K to 1080i for my mobile encoder.
Whatever The Camera Store is paying these guys, it isn't enough. Spectacular review as always.
+Ben Corwin Forwarded to management!
Jordan @ TCSTV
18:26 for better visibility of focus peaking I turn the EVF/Screen to black and white and focus peaking to green. That improved my manual focus a lot
+Khalid Aziz Great tip, thanks!
This was phenomenal. Thank you so much. Buying a GH5 today because of this video....PANASONIC SHOULD SPONSOR YOU!!!
Best camera reviews on the internet. Great job as always.
These two guys always arguing about stills and videos are purely awesome

Been hanging out for this video. Well worth the wait. Thanks men.
Nice job Chris and Jordan. Love your camera reviews!
You also made a great review and also lots of nice review about sound~~~
Thanks Chenny Ye!
On the point of audio, there's no other channel that takes audio as seriously as you guys! Thank you for that!!

That intro walk n' talk was featured way back in the 7d mark 2 vid. I know my TCS episodes.
Can't get anything past you Ben!

Yeah.
Thanks guys, I shoot with a FZ2500 but, I have learned so much from you both. I appreciate the time you give to the cameras in your reviews
Recently got myself a GH5 and share your views. Absolutely a amazing camera and best camera there is for video under 10K

I haven't watched your videos in a year and it feels like I'm watching a video from an old friend. Haha glad you guys are still at it
Nice job guys. Looks like you covered everything. Now I don’t have to review it. Actually I might just review the 10 bit and then link to this video.
+Dave Dugdale Thanks Dave! I would love to hear your take on the 10 bit image.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Would also love to hear what you think of the GH5, Dave!
TheCameraStoreTV .... it would be great if you give an updated FZ2500 experience.... i love this FZ2500... love from Bangladesh
I have a review on the 2500 that i use all the time. Also Id love to see your thoughts on the camera dave!
Aw, Dave we love your reviews! By the way, do you have training on the GH5 like you did w/ the GHR?

This video is GAME CHANGING!!!
Damn, they actually killed it on this review. So much important information talked about.
It was worth the wait, great review guys. Also, Chris your daughter has a beautiful smile.
Gr8 stuff... I always look forward to your reviews. I've had my GH5 since its release and love it~!

Epic review guys, thanks! At 9.40 into the video. 120 fps 10 bit, how? Is that even possible?

Just handheld, with the XLR1 adapter and a shoe extension to have either 2 lav mics or a lav + shotgun.
Jordan @ TCSTV
And you actually sold your FS7 & FS5 in favor of the GH5?
Where can I download your -2 EV lut?
You guys are the best. I don't want people to come and see my channel for reviews. I do impression videos but if they want a good detailed, objective technical review, you guys are the only people to go see. Stills and video by the way!
I don't know half the shit you guys are talking about, but thanks for making these videos.
This is what I'm waiting for a long time from TCSTV, thank you!!!
This was just so well done - thank you! I have watched many, many camera reviews on TH-cam and yours is among the best if not the best. Please keep up the great work :-)
You guys both did a great job with the content in this review!
Best camera review of a 6 mo old product, no doubt, you guys are the best in the biz!
Thank you guys for the review. I’ve been planning on buying a GH5 for video and this review helped me make that decision!
Great review! I am so happy you guys covered the anamorphic part!
Such a good review. The wait was really worth it!
Man I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you for the upload guys
Incredible review, so much information. You are the best. Thanks for revealing the GH5 is the landmark camera.
Great video guys. Loved all the info and b-roll.
Ive never given a fuck to watch anyone on youtube for more than 3 minutes without skipping to their demo shots and since I'm looking to buy a GH5.. I found myself watching a very relevant video from start to finish. Thank you!
That was easily, the best review out there. Thank you guys for all the information.
@thecamerastoretv I was told that the older 12-35 & 35-100mm lenses could be used with dual is 2 via a firmware update.
yes after upgrade
of the firmware
Yeah thought so, so why buy the newer lenses?
Awesome review, dudes! Gh5 is the most versatile camera out there, I think!
As someone who chooses the smaller cameras over cinema cameras for the form factor and versatility, the image stabilization is on of the most important aspects of a camera. I appreciate the time you gave it in the review.
Great review. Thanks for all the work that went into this and all the ground you covered.
I need a GH5! Love my little G85... but g'damn I need a GH5! Thanks for review!
Great review. Definitely worth the wait. So in M43 ville is it true that if you lean more towards photos the EM1-Mk II is a better choice whereas if you lean more toward video the GH5 is the way to go?
YESSSSSSS FINALLLYY!!!
My slider was basically unusable until I bought the GH5. With the IBIS and 60 fps my slider shots look great on the same slider.
Such a thorough review! Loved it
When you switch between the photo mode and movie mode at 25:11, your GH5 does it flawlessly. However, when I do it on mine, the screen turns off for a split second. Does anyone else have this issue?
Excellent review! Thanks for all your hard work - it was a joy to watch! :)
Thanks for the review. I wondered why you hadn't done one in all this time - now it makes sense.
Whoa TCS video at this hour? Wasn't expecting this!
Great review boys! For me the best overall review for this camera, loved it, thanks so much for the work you put in. Cheers John
Great video! I've never considered micro 4/3rds, but this looks like a great all-rounder camera for producing TH-cam content. Videos like this remind me why you guys are my favorite photography channel on TH-cam. :)
Well done guys! - Worth the wait!
As always you guys are informative and fun to watch..
Nice to hear what I have been saying for years.
Don't use LOG unless your scene needs the DR.
Natural on gh5 is fantastic. And switch to vlog if the shot needs all that headroom.
you guys make awesome camera equipment reviews very geniune and not at all biased keep up good work
Jordan, you said that you use neutral profile sometimes. Is it standard or tweaked? Can you use later LUT?
Hooked on Photography Very inspiring work there 👍
Thank you :-)
Bro these pics are lit up in the 6! (Compliment)
Hooked on Photography Good stuff thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Great work guys! Thank's for the review! Many greetings from Germany!
Camera of the year!
Loved it! Awesome review!!!
I wish you had put the lenses/settings for some of the beautiful shots you took. Especially, some of those outside
Why The Handmaid’s Tale at 6:45?
Another great video. In your opinion do you think the gh5 has the best viewfinder ?
You might want to put this in your 'Panasonic' playlist - I was specifically looking there for your review of the GH5, and it is not included there.
As usual, fantastic. Good work you two. I aways enjoy your insight, knowledge, and presentation. Considered the gh5 but went xt2. Pics are my hook. Can't wait for the next one. Ya'll are better than Abbot and Costello. Keep em flyin.
I absolutely love and appreciate your work guys, keep it up the both of you !!! Amazing!! 😊😊
Awesome review. I went into the store a couple months ago and jokedly belly ached about no GH5 review. Well worth the wait. Although it did not influence me to get a GH5, bought it when it first came out, it did help me gain a renewed appreciation. Makes me wonder what a GH6 will be like?
Great review guys! I'm considering a GH5 at the moment so thanks for posting this.
