Important disclaimer: This video was shot 2 months ago, before the nationwide lockdown in Malaysia was implemented.
One of the popular questions I get asked - which Olympus OM-D to get? The E-M5 Mark III or the E-M1 Mark II? Some would suggest the E-M5 Mark III is newer hence the better choice, but the E-M1 Mark II, though released in 2016, still offers a lot of top-tier feature and commendable performance. Both cameras are excellent choices, I break down the similarities and differences, and my recommendations on which to get in this video.

Another one I filmed before the lockdown, more than 2 months ago. After 2 months of lockdown, the cases of new Covid infections in Malaysia is actually going up. At this rate, I will probably only be able to go out in 3087.

Are vaccination rates low? Is it the problem? USA is wide open with everything open and has been so since May 15 (most states)

I feel you. I have family (my in-laws) in KL, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor. They cannot visit each other. Or if they do they face huge fines. Plus the fear mongering to get vaccinated is really on another level now. Funny though that there seems to be a "religion bias" when it comes to who (based on reace & religion) gets which vaccine ... that sounds terrible and sadly reminds you immediatly of what happened in germany in 1930s/1940s ...

Yet another great, upbeat video. Good analysis, detailed enough to back up your suggestions but not too long. The differences do push these cameras into different markets in a holistic way, all working together rather than making for tough choices. The similarities mean that neither one would be a "bad" choice even if it was not optimal. Their bottom line imaging being the same, you cannot go wrong where it counts. Thanks.

Robin, you have made another excellent video that answered some questions I also had. I have owned the em5 iii since it’s debut in November 2019. I am very happy with it and don’t need the more robust (and heavier) em1 ii.
I am hopeful that we might see a new sensor with higher MP in a new Olympus camera in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the great comparison, Robin. Excellent presentation, as always!
For the price, you really just cannot beat picking up a E-M1 Mark II, especially when you factor in the free Rokinin 16mm cine lens currently being offered by one major authorized resellers as an additional incentive.

I concluded similar when I purchased my EM5iii, prioritising size & weight. I've since unexpectedly paired it with 40-150mm, which is poorly balanced, but still perfectly usable so long as you're not shooting constantly for hours.
Happy with my choice as a keen amateur enjoying the hobby.

very useful comparison, thanks! I'm using em1mkII since a few months now, and I'm pretty happy with it. For my use - reportage of long bike trails- the light weight of EM5 would be great, but the more customization of EM1 are even better. Also, the grip allows me to shoot while riding, which would be almost impossible on the EM5

Great video one more time Robin, Congrats! I do have the E-M5 and I'm a professional photographer. It's an amazing camera that covers 90% of my works. Only for some particular dark places like churches (large group pictures...) or not well lighted night events I take my Canon 5D Mark III. But for the rest of the work M5 is a dream to me. So light equipment and with gorgeous lenses. As you says is more than sufficient for my work :)

So much fun to see this. The E-M1 Mk.II is a no brainer for me. Better body, more robust and will take the knocks way better. Might be heavier but I'll take the hit and also the better grip on the E-M1. I have big hands and ready for the rigors of real life. Done!

Sincerely Robin your videos are one of the best in the net to understand about the Olympus (now OMD). This kind of comparatives, your honest and clear knowledge of them provides me a lot of cristal information. I had this kind question.... I have a E-M5 mark 2... probably I need to update one day... maybe the E-M1 Mark2... but it looks that for me is definitely much better the E-M5 after your video. All, well maybe is much better say most of, youtubers all the time the most expensive, the latest lunch, the top of serie... is the best option! Doesn't matter which kind of use you need... All time making references about maybe, is just case, could be one day need it...

Thank you, Robin. Good advice. I have the E-M1 mk2 and my older E--M1 as my second body. I think the E-M1 mk2 is plenty compact and light that something even lighter and smaller, with the big lenses in my collection mounted (300mm f4, and 4/3 14-35 and 35-100 f2 with adapters), would be a challenge. I love the layout of the camera's controls and its sturdiness, and I fully trust it to do what I need every time.

Greetings from southern Indiana, USA! I had the EM5 m2 as a backup for the EM1 m2 that I also had. I liked the grip for better stability when holding the camera. I found a used on at the camera store for the EM5 m2. I finally decided that for travel purposes, it was better to replace the EM5 and upgrade to the EM1 M3, with the EM1 m2 becoming the backup. Advantage: batteries. Both EM1 cameras use the same batteries, so I could bring just one charger instead of two. And the backup batteries would fit either EM1 camera. If I found I went through the batteries faster, I would probably look into those chargers that allow you to charge two batteries at one time. In general, I've found just one extra battery is all I need for one day of shooting.

I have the EM1-II and enjoy taking actions shots, mainly bicycle racing. I was initially unimpressed with the results using one-shot with varying settings. It wasn't until I used the pro capture mode that I realized how amazing this camera is. I had way too many poor shots with single shot mode and had way too many missed or out of focus images. The Pro Capture mode is amazing. I was rarely able to catch/focus on a subject closing at a high rate of speed until I used this mode. I'm very happy with the camera. Thank you for the reviews!

Small, light and very capable. It reminds me of my old film days but not limited to 24 exposure and one iso. i recommend it to anyone both pros and advanced shooters. Two card slots does not a pro make. But carry a extra battery or two. Nice video!

I have had the EM5 Mark III for about a year now. I have recently started using a tripod and also Peak Design Capture clip which I love. I have lived using the camera but the base has cracks around the tripod screw hole and a small chunk has now broken off. Apparently this is a common issue and now means I can no longer mount on a tripod. Wish I had the Em1 with the metal body...

I have EM10 Mark ii x 2. Chrome and black. Would really like an EM1 Mark ii for the focus stacking, plus the high res and pro capture features. However, handling an old EM1 recently really did make me appreciate the lightness and small size of the EM10 cameras. Now I have the old 12-40 Pro it is maybe a little heavy on the EM10ii but with the 17mm f/1.8 and the 45mm f/1.8 the EM10ii is a perfect handler. I would like the 25mm f/1.8 too but I have the Lumix 25 that feels cheap but is actually cheap!

  • @MrMichaelMeissner
    @MrMichaelMeissner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Due to migraines, I have to wear polarized sunglasses all of the time when I'm outdoors in daylight. In this case, the E-m5 mark III has a significant advantage over the E-m1 mark II (and mark III as well). The E-m5 mark III has an OLED viewfinder which has no distortions when you view it through polarized sunglasses. The E-m1 series (and E-m5 mark I/II) use a TFT LCD display that has distortions when you shoot in landscape (horizontal) orientation and use polarized sunglasses.
In most of the cameras with a TFT LCD viewfinder, I find the distortion is of the form of horizontal bands, where one band is clear, and the next band is distorted. The E-m5 mark II is different in that it is completely opaque. I find that on cameras with the bands of distortion, I can select a single focus point that is in the area that is not distorted and be able to shoot. However, I would not be able to manually focus the camera while using the sunglasses.
I do find the color rendition of TFT LCD viewfinders to be more 'natural', and that OLED viewfinders tend to be a little supersaturated. I've learned over time to just mentally tone down the saturation to get a better idea of what the image will look like (and if I did like that supersaturation, raise the levels in post processing). But OLED displays do tend to display true black better than TFT LCD.
The TFT LCD viewfinders do refresh faster than most OLED viewfinders, which is presumably the reason Olympus has stuck with these viewfinders for the higher end cameras. The Panasonic G9 has an OLED viewfinder that refreshes as fast as the Olympus TFT LCD viewfinders, but Olympus hasn't used it yet.
IIRC, OLED displays tend to consume more power than TFT LCD displays. The power level tends to be more consistent no matter whether the scene is dark or light, while TFT LCD displays tend to use a variable amount of power, depending on the brightness of the display.
In terms of computer monitors, TFT monitors tend to last longer than OLED. In particular towards the end of its lifetime, OLED displays start losing color fidelity, particularly the blue color (so monitors will boost the blue signal based on how much the monitor has been used). I'm not sure it matters as much for photographers. Most users probably don't use the camera as much for the viewfinder display to start failing. The pros and advanced amateurs that do spend consider time taking pictures each day tend to upgrade their camera gear every few years.
I find the USB charging to be not that useful. You have to turn off the camera to charge the battery. If you never need to change your battery during the day, it is useful for traveling because you don't have to bring a separate charger.
What I want is the ability that the E-m1 mark III has to be able to run a camera on a USB C-PD battery. The E-m1 mark II can also use a battery grip (HLD-9) that adds a second battery and it also has a port for external power. This can become an issue if you are using the camera for a long time, and changing the batteries can be problematic (if the camera is on a jig, or you are doing lots and lots of video on a tripod).
For vlogging, one thing that is missing on the E-m5 mark III is a headphone jack. I did a video shoot in 2019, and I lost the first few minutes of sound because the microphone wasn't properly plugged in. I didn't notice as I was recording without a headset.
That being said, I own an E-m5 mark III, but I've been thinking on adding an E-m1 mark II for the times it would be more useful.

Hi Robin, I agree with most of the points. The EM 5 Mark III has a very nice body. Since both cameras have the same price, I would prefer the EM 1 Mark II as the main camera, just because of the battery grip and the larger battery. If you are very light on the road with a Prime lens, then the EM 5.

Great 'versus' video. I already have the EM5 MK2, which more than suffices as a casual camera (especially when paired with the 12-40mm PRO lens - which practically lives on the camera permanently!). They're getting harder to get hold of now, but I really hope I can get hold of an EM1 MK2 asap before they're discontinued - that's always been my goal, to have the EM1 MK2 as my professional camera body. I really do not need any more than what it will deliver. But, Robin - where can I get the same lanyard you have there on your EM1 ?

But when I need a new camera, EM5 was still at its 16MP 2nd Gen. so I hv choose EM1 II for higher resolution and 4K.
Once I use EM1 II it could never go back, the grip, battery life and dual card. Even not a pro user I could enjoy its much greater capability for traveling and event shooting.
By the time EM5 Release its 3rd Gen, its not very attractive to me as I’m already so used to my EM1 II as a companion.
If I would add a lighter camera for more relaxing use, I will prefer going back to Pen, and the recent E-P7 seams nice, looking forward to your own hands on of this new one!

Great comparison. For me the deciding factor was I can use my perpetual Lightroom 6.14 with the E-M1 Mark II but not with the E-M5 Mark III. The E-M5III would require the Lightroom subscription.

thanks for the video. I just bought the EM1 mark ii. Just trying to get through the crazy menu system right now. Just a question, where did you get your cool wrist straps for those cameras? Also is there a pancake lens you would recommned? I have the Olympus 12-40 2.8 pro lens on it now and it's pretty awesome but I'd like to put something that I can slip into my coat pocket on trips.

I own em1m2 as a backup/second camera to my canon r5. I love form factor of em1’2. I don’t like form factor of em5 due to lack of grip, my fingers start hurting pretty soon after using em5 and I would need an extra front grip just to overcome it, which defeats its purpose. Em1 much more comfortable. I also bought used em1x but sold it after couple of months- that was too bulky/uncomfortable and I did not find tracking autofocus on x was much better than em1m2 even after latest firmware. Em1m2 all the way!!!

I chose EM1 II over EM5 III and I am no more than a keen amateur. I came from EM5 I and was heading to EM5 III. Given the closeness in pricing I had to consider also the EM1 II and the way better handling on the EM1 II combined with battery life sealed it for me. BTW also got 12-40 Pro Lens which I think is a bit too heavy for the EM5. Certainly I am happy with my choice. The big pro Lens is a bigger factor on weight than the body - on a long hike I sometimes leave that behind and just carry my 9-18 lens which I love. Good summary though Robin - always love your Videos

I'm OK with the 12-40mm f/2.8 on the EM5 Mark iii and EM10 Mark ii but it's about at the size limit for me. I wouldn't go further. Luckily the wonderful 75mm f/1.8 is smaller than the 12-40mm f/2.8 and fits the smaller bodies wonderfully .

Another nice advantage of the E-M1ii is that it's actually the cheaper of the two on the used market, at least where I live. Around 25% less than the E-M5iii. It's easily the best value professional or enthusiast camera around at the moment

@@4mb127 I’ve watched a Craigslist Olympus EMD1 Mii for $550. The owner wouldn’t discount his price. A EMD1 Mii came on the market got $400 with two batteries and the charger. I have misplaced my Panasonic G9 and think the EMD1Mii would be a good replacement. The G9 has better video options but I only use video for short clips.
Looking forward to setting up the camera and starting to use it. I have Panasonic & Olympus lenses so I am ready to go. I think I made a good purchase at a very good price.

I have the em5ii, that I use with a third party grip, and the em1ii. For photowalks and if I want to keep it small, I take the em5 with one of the premium Oly prime lenses. If I want more flexibility I take the em1 with the 12-40 pro. This lens never leaves the camera. On the whole the em1 has better ergonomics but is a little more conspicious. They are both fantastic camera’s and there is very little difference in image quality. Battery life on the em5 is disappointing though.

For me Pro Capture was a decision maker. The E-M5 Iii buffers only 14 frames and that’s too short for me shooting song birds, where I found 30 f/s to be the optimal rate. I don‘t know, but if the E-M5 III has live monitoring on the hdmi port, one may utilize an affordable usb capture adapter for webcam application. One thing I am missing on the E-M1 II is Bluetooth for easier connection to my smartphone.

Hi, Robin - I am one of your many thousands of giant fans - THANKS for this video!
I am now looking into either of these cameras just to get better autofocus and battery life than my otherwise wonderful M5 Mark II. My biggest question is compatibilty with flashes and lenses I already have for real estate shooting. ALL of my equipment is matched to the M5 Mark II - everything from flashes and remote triggers, to microphones. My main lenses I know will will work (favorite is the 7-14 M Zuiko Pro tele, by far), but I'm worried about my Godox flashes and other stuff. Do you think staying with M5 (moving to M3) line is wise, or can I use the M1 Mark II (I prefer mainly because of great battery life) with my stuff?
    YOU are the BEST!!!

I’m into Astro/star photography which will you recommend?
I struggle with the high amount of heat noise at iso 1600 upwards on the pen f currently as it heats up after 20, 3-8s long exposure.

Right now, the EM5 Mark III and EM1 Mark III cost the same used, I originally got the EM5, but I like using a 12-40 f2.8 as my main lens and found that I would've liked a little extra grip. At that point I was better off just returning it and getting the EM1 instead, its slightly bigger and heavier, but it has more features and better overall performance.
