  • I rode the most expensive government project in Honolulu, Hawaii. Many people know it as the rail but it has recently been given the name of Skyline. In this vlog I take you on a tour of the grand opening day of the Skyline rail system in Honolulu, Hawaii. Let me know what your thoughts are on Honolulu, Hawaii's newest form of transportation.

I left Oahu over thirty (30) years ago. And they were in the planning stages for the train.
It has taken thirty years and $12,000,000,000. And they still haven't finished it. And can't provide bathrooms...

extension goes to Ala Moana, Airport, Chinatown and downtown; There will be more riders.

20 years. That seems about right. Come to think about it, the PALI HWY still going on 6+ years and NO END in sight. The workers just MILKING THE CLOCK until they RETIRE and give the same job to their kids. By the time the finish, GOING NEED REPAIRS again. That's Hawaii for you.

Thanks for checking it out for us on such a busy time. I wonder how they will deal with the bathroom situation going forward? I wouldn't even think about that since I compare it to the bus and the bus doesn't have bathrooms on it or at the stops. But I can see the need for it this weekend when so many people wanted to try it for free so at least they had the portable toilets ready for the crowds. I do worry about the bump ride. I'd expect a smoother ride after that much money and time haha. I look forward to your next video.

Thank you for riding the rail and giving your review. If I needed to go to Pearlidge, I might catch it. For work, it doesn't go far enough for me. If it was going as far as downtown, I could take the bus the rest of the way. I have to make sure I use the restroom before going. We'll see once it's up and running for business.

Thank you for giving us an idea about riding the rail system. First of all, finding a restroom, a clean one, is a major problem. You would think that the people who planned this whole system would have learned from previous projects around the city. Remember the Aloha Stadium, where the womens restroom had lines of people waiting to get in. I hope that the maintenance of the rail system does not run the city BROKE.

I love to drive. That being said, I’ve been working on Ford Island for the last 9 years but live in Hawaii Kai. The morning and evening commute is bad (not as bad as West Oahu, though). If we did have something like the rail coming out here I might have considered using it. I heard there were no restrooms but I’m glad they at least have the porta-potty option.
On a separate note, my wife saw you at Water Drop the other day. I asked her if she said Hi, but she wanted to leave you and your family in peace.

They really need to have it stop at UH Manoa, the airport, and near other places people need to go, like downtown or the State Capital or Honolulu Hale or the Honolulu Municipal building. Ideally, it should go all the way out to Hawaii Kai, like the Hawaii Kai park and ride location across from Costco. Kahala Mall would be another logical stop on the way out.

Originally was supposed to go to Ala Moana and then UH Manoa, and completed by 2019. They decided to cut those because its sooo overdue and over budget that they cut the route. Hawaiis rail is a joke and people only rode it on opening week because its free and a novelty for them.

Welcome to the rail game - now this can go 1 of 2 ways... It can stay clean and classy like Japan/China - or go horrifically wrong by still work like New York and Chicago...
Also, why are people complaining of there not being a bathroom? Cause once they are installed at the stations not the trains - then the maintenance/security is gonna be 24/7...

  • @hawaiiguy1

Charles, so there were no stops amongst the other 7 stops? You either (during the 5 days of free rides) had to go to the Aloha Stadium or Kapolei ends to go on and go off the rail? It would have been nice that all nine stops could have been utilized during the five days up to July 4th.

They stopped at every stop. I didn't film it cause I didn't want to bore everyone. I thought about doing a video later on with each stop and places to eat. Crossing over through down town and over Makiki to Manoa is impossible as they would have to lose streets, affecting residential areas are densely populated. Elderly and buss users are the only ones gonna use it. You said you would ride it again. But to be worth it many have to ride daily. Not just once a year.

I'm sorry for criticizing you about this Charles, but do know it's not limited to you. I've been hearing about plans for this train since I was a kid in the early 70s when I would visit Honolulu during the summer. I rememeber being so excited because in my mind, it would be like a Disneyland Monorail and if you're a 4 year old, that's about the best project one could imagine. Now that it's partially up, the major thing I hear about are complaints about the lack of bathrooms. In another video I saw, the person filiming had audio on and you could hear another rider in the background say somehting like you better plan to go to the bathroom before using the train becuase this is a 20 minute ride. Really? People can't hold it in anymore for that long? Wow.
If you take the subway in New York or Boston, using the bathroom in those stations (if they have any because I've never checked) would definitely not be on your list of things to do. Again, this is not particular to you, but since you put the bathroom issue in your thumbnail I'll comment here that I hope the people of Honolulu will instead focus at some point on the fact that they've got a train that is planned to stretch about 20 miles that'll serve many people who now don't need a car to get somewhere and create even more traffic. This is a good thing!

No worries. No offense taken at all. I completely understand what you mean. I think it really just depends on the individual. I was able to hold it in the entire time I filmed. But for my son, who's still potty training, it might be more of a challenge for him to hold it. I just wanted to show the viewers as much as I could of the rail, including the bathrooms so they know what to expect. Personally I enjoyed it and I hope to see it succeed. Thanks for the comment and being thoughtful of my feelings. I appreciate that. Hope you have a great weekend.

Bus stops are next to the streets. Light rail is a station. I believe there is no train or light rail station anywhere in the world without bathrooms. This project is a failure all the way around, from crazy costs to ridiculous delays and now no bathrooms. So far, ridership is also way less than projected. Would it ever find some success? We will see.
