I’m born and raised in Hawaii and it hurts that more people I know and grew up with can’t live here anymore. Hawaii isn’t Hawaii without its local people.
As an Asian-American born and raised on the mainland, I feel so much sadness for the native Hawaiians. I didn’t even learn the depth of Hawaii’s history in school. It was not until I was an adult that I learn the true, unfiltered history of Hawaii. It’s just so sad what has happened and what is happening.
I was fortunate to visit Hawaii once and I’ll never go again. It’s extremely hard to be served by native people and see them living in poverty and enjoy a vacation. This is a conversation that needs a lot more attention and I appreciate this video
This is how it was in all the Americas 😢 natives never mattered to the Christian European colonization, 2nd class humans, killed or enslaved and those who “adapted” and got “civilized” are still 2nd class… they keep taking all resources till this day… ships loaded with gold, silver, all kind of goods back in the day and now the actual land.
@Aron Toulouse totally agree. This applies not just for Hawaii but for other states and countries as well. Ever since I tried Airbnb in 2018, I have never stepped foot inside another hotel room. It feels good to know that our money goes to the local population instead of a multinational hotel chain. (I’m aware that Airbnb takes a percentage of the pay as well, but they do need the money keep the app running!) Some people might argue “but hotel chains employ local people as well!”. But you know what? The bellboys and waiters and janitors are not really given fair wages. Many of them have to work a second job to survive. Meanwhile, Airbnb hosts are allowed to set their own nightly rates...whether it is $20/night or $300/night, it’s totally up to them.
This makes me so angry and just disgusted! As an American, I’m ashamed of how the government treats the natives!!! It’s THEIR land!!! Not one single native should EVER be homeless. Why isn’t this all over the media!!! We need to bring awareness to this!
@@bannockchief actually bro, you are just plain wrong. the reason hawaiians have lost their homes and land, is because of the governments property taxes. Rising home values SHOULD make natives rich, but instead, because of government property tax, they lose their homes, because they are forced to either sell the home or work a higher paying job to pay the government. But most of the time, they cannot find a higher paying job, so they have to sell the home, then as the property values increase after they sold, they are further and further priced out of the market. ALL because of taxes. Please please please, study and learn this stuff before making idiotic statements about capitalism. Do you know what the world was like before capitalism??? it was called the dark ages for a reason

@@GravityButterfly The Mexican empire conquered many of the tribes that were native to the western part of North America. Let's know our history. Also, Mexico created a systematic process called 'Mestizaje' with a goal of lightening the population and creating a Mexican ethnic identity. Let's not play this "Mexicans are indigenous" game. It's a smokescreen that a lot of mestizo Hispanics use to practice erasure of indigenous culture.
This is heartbreaking. While the rich keeps getting richer, the poor gets poorer. This is happening every where, not just in Hawaii. People in other states or even countries are experiencing the same. I hope they find a solution to these problems soon.
@Aloha not to mention they also almost completely destroyed our culture, polluted our oceans, and killed off our native species, our ancestors took good care of this 'aina and now it's being destroyed.

Born and raised in the islands. Still live here. I consider myself a pretty level headed and hardworking guy but this is truly what’s happening here. I have a little Hawaiian in my blood and have many friends that are nearly 90% or more hawaiian blood in them. Trust me when I say this. Even the so called “Hawaiian” organizations are entangled in the greediness of the whole circle of corruption. Seen it and have even close relatives that’s involved. Hard to take in but it’s true. MONEY TALKS. I’ve been to Tahiti back in the early 2000’s and that trip made me and my wife tear up. All the locals were pushed away from the coastlines and live in poverty in the countryside’s/mountainous areas. Million dollar homes popping up all over the place. That trip opened our eyes because that outcome that we witnessed was exactly what was happening to our home back in Hawaii. Fast forward to 2022. It’s here and it’s really bad. We are fortunate to own our home and some properties. We’ve been saving up for so many years to prepare ourselves for this crap. Sacrificed alot during our younger years to buy property while in our early 20’s then bought our 1st home 7yrs later. In this present day, the value of real estate has tripled even quadrupled in the past 3 yrs. Even with what we have and working our asses off, we still struggling. The rich and wealthy don’t give a dam. It’s me me me, take take take…… My thoughts and hopes for all who try their best to make it in this place we call home. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😔
interesting. Owning real estate is such a big marker for generational wealth. I grew in the projects in NYC to a single mother raising 3 boys. No real assets, and now own some properties. We also work our asses off - I have 3 jobs, but I can tell that just owning a piece of property during inflationary times really sets some folks up in another category altogether.
That one woman was so right when she said Hawaii was stolen. It was never purchased, it was overthrown. No Native Hawaiian should ever be homeless. I lived there for 5 years and saw so many back in the mid to late 90's, living in tents on the beach. That is just not right. I am glad that I don't live there anymore because it was so expensive and I just got tired of struggling and moved back to the Mainland. But if you are born and raised there generation after generation, you should not be struggling and you certainly should not be homeless.
All land is stolen, that's kinda history. Power struggles. Hawaiians killed or took from the people who came before them. Then America took from Hawaiians because America was the stronger military power
The land was stolen? Who gave it to them? Where is their deeds? All these people should of ALREADY had their chit together, with their SUPPOSED land, that they already lived on with a home. And shouldn't they be blaming the greedy Hawaiian's that are selling their pre-existing homes for $500 per sqft....when they could be selling it for just a minor profit of $100 per sqft to another Hawaiian opposed to racking in fat cash from a main lander/outsider buyer? Blame the Hawaiian's who looked to make ONLY CASH, because of greed, selling their property that high and not comphrending the results. Who ended up selling their homes that high? It wasn't leprechauns, Greeks or unicorns...it was Hawaiian's.
I moved to hawaii with my roommate at 18, less then one year later my best friend and I need to leave the island because prices here are astronomical and wages are less then 12 an hour. Our apartment is a closet sized room and we can not even afford that. Unfortunately many Hawaiians are just forced out or forced to turn to government help and it’s so sad.
What were you thinking moving there is the first place?? I make a substantial salary and I still wouldn't move there because I know I would only be able to rent a condo. You need to do your research in advance.
I moved there in 2002ish with 3k, lived relaxed and worked till 2009 when I moved back to CA. Life was great, rent was very affordable and I worked a normal 40hr week. My last year I did overtime and saved all I could and left with 23k. But that was 2009, and I was on Oahu. Want a better Hawaii, stop voting blue.
I'm native to Hawaii and was born and raised there for 12 years. Me and my parents are from Waianae and recently moved 2 years ago due to the high pricing. It was even sadder since my brother had just gotten into Kamehameha and me and my older brother were to be attending the year after. Even though I was excited to move, I still really do miss my family and friends back at home. Moving to the states is like being in another country, and the move was hard. I don't blame my family though because they did what was best for us. If you do visit hawaii, go to the more local spots and see just how much homeless there is. It's heartbreaking, I was just lucky not to be in that situation as a kid. Hawaii isn't just beautiful beaches and shaka's, there's more struggle here then you'll ever know.
It is the evil elites biden is flooding all America with illegals across the boarder cities across America have drug addicted homelessness popping up everywhere I hope the Hawaiian people don’t get hooked on drugs that is also manufactured by government you see it worst in democrat ran states
@FRANK LA FORGIA Are you insinuating the guy that threw paper towels at Puerto Ricans would've done better to stop the ultra rich from buying up native land and building hotels.. Or are you like the rest of us and wish someone else, like Tulsi of Hawaii, won?
I am so heartbroken at this situation. I was born and raised here in Hawaii and in my 37 years here it’s gotten harder and harder for native islanders to live in the place we are born. And it’s even more painful for native Hawaiians because they have ancestral roots here also. But during the last 5 years it has started exploding. Outside investors keep buying up properties here and the prices are going up at a disgusting rate. The government needs to make a law that you cannot buy a home here unless you have lived here for a certain amount of time. I understand free market, supply and demand etc. but the consequences of this continuing this way is that we will all have to leave and this place will just be an island for the ultra wealthy. It will loose what is so magical about Hawaii. People who understand Aloha, Pono, people of honor and integrity that respect the land, the sea, and the culture. I am in tears that to our own government money is more important than the soul of the islands. And the people who understand this place and actually care about this place, the people who belong here.
I have lived in Hi for over 60 years. This is what happens, a family buys a house many years ago. Parents die and children don't want to live together in the house so it sells. Kids sell house at market rate so the price is higher. New family buys house and parents die and kids sell house at market rate and the price goes up. Regulations are insane and price to build new housing is insane so prices go up. Locals have little family motivation to do well in school so they mostly get nowhere in life and have little income. Sooner or later the price is high enough that only people that have higher income jobs can afford housing. State is anti business so making a great income with a small business is almost impossible. State is a "Nanny State" and wants to regulate just about everything you do. Cost of living is also high. Keep voting for those who raise taxes and regulate and it will only get worse but they keep drinking the kool aid.
@@bkailua1224 It's not just in Hawaii. In Canada British Columbia, Seattle, everywhere homes are so expensive that it's almost incomprehensible. Nice homes in my neighborhood are closer to 1 million and I'm in the suburbs near water. For Hawaii, it's obviously a little worse due to the location. I don't think it's a good idea to make land laws for Hawaii but giving the Natives a reservation would be a good start. Although it causes crime, they will at least have a home.
This video seems to have a lot of impact and a lot of people realize the living situation we are in. Big corporations have taken the “Hawaiian Lifestyle” and marketed it to tourism. If you visit, just keep this in mind: - Go to the small locally owned businesses - Be respectful. The people of Hawaii are so nice, if you are nice to us. - Don’t ignore boundaries and go places or do things that are not allowed. As locals, we get the short stick because of the actions of people who don’t even live here. We invite you to our home, so long as basic respect is had.
@@ke4692 Just a note for people since this video has a large reach. There is no doubt that Hawaiians should be serious about this and preserve the little that is left from our culture. If you want local families to win, then local business must be brought to light. The respect portion is simply a reminder to respect our people and aina when visiting. there is nothing wrong with that, and I am left confused as to why you are questioning it. If you are not from Hawai'i, you should understand that the majority of tourists are sucked into tourist traps set up by large mainland US corporations. It is well known out here that a vast majority of tourists have no boundaries and will intrude into peoples personal lives, trespass on property, and do illegal shit that we get to face the consequences for. How many hikes, fishing spots, and beaches have to get monitored/closed off to public access because people that aren't even from here abuse it? It simply doesn't make sense to skip an opportunity like this. If a video by a fairly large content creator attains a large audience that is mainly not from Hawai'i, but likely to visit, why wouldn't you say the above statement? It is hard to have a voice from Hawai'i on a national scale. We are so isolated that this is one of the only ways to remind people to please not act like a dumbass, and to support local business who need to support. Hawaii can do this on its own, but the first step is having a government that values Hawaiian tradition and values. Its a shame that our leaders place priority on mostly people the state will see once and never again.
This is happening to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 as well. Cost of living is outrageous in the island and Puerto Ricans don’t earn enough to keep up and we are being remove from our island little by little! Hawaii we are with you! ✊🏻

On my last trip home a couple months ago, I looked at the value of the house my family lives in and it is around $700k. The house is trash, needs to be knocked down and made a new. It's just over 800 sq/ft, 3 bedrooms. After living here on the mainland, I finally bought a house for myself at $309k for 1500 sq/ft. People always ask me, "Why would you leave Hawaii?" The answer is simple, I was priced out of my home. People there aren't homeless, they are house-less. Hawaii is our home.

Haole money from the colonial era in the african continent is what is used to buy other places.
This happening throughout the United States, though Hawaiians are probably experiencing this the worst. Half the problem lies in investment firms (foreign and domestic) that buy up the land and build expensive condos and drive up the price. You have investment firms from China, Japan, Russia and the Middle East doing this, as well as investment firms like Blackrock and others in the US doing the same thing.
This is the root cause. But it will never be mention because local politicians tend to get paid off by these firms and/or benefit from the development by awarding contracts.
And they are buying land everywhere. I have seen comments on other channels that Ireland is another place that is losing available land bc of foreign buyers. The global market push is to blame. It's time for every country to ban foreign buyers from owning any land especially farming land. All of the USA used to have zoning laws that were upheld where you couldn't buy a property and make it an airbnb, you had to live there, not anyone else. And all the land in one area could not be bought up by one person. Things need to go back to that. NYC used to have rent controlled apartments, where the gov't didn't allow rent to be raised. Sounds like all local govt's need to do this, then investors will leave voluntarily.

Every “land sale” is theft AND a violation of international law called pillaging.
I’ve always wanted to move to Hawaii, Maui specifically. Knowing about this is what deters me. They don’t deserve this, and if by me moving there makes it worse I won’t do it.
As a Costa Rican, I feel these so deep. The most beautiful places of my country are not own by natives, but by people from first World countries. I have to pay to them to be able to visit to places of my own country
This happens everywhere.. Including in the United States. Born and raised in San Diego, CA.. And rich people from Arizona, Florida, New York etc buy it all up... Then people like myself cant afford it and have to move to a place like Nevada. Unfortunately the world is small and we are more connected than ever, it is how the world works.
@ADM that's not quite the same, that's being priced out of a state, not being barred from viewing natural attractions. It's still an issue, but you aren't veing forced out of your native lands
This is happening all over the world. Anywhere there is prime real estate. Happened to my home town too. Everyone I grew up with has moved out and moved on because no one can afford it.
I wish there was more videos like this to bring awareness to this situation. I have native hawaiian blood and not once have I nor my family ever got any assistance. My mom was a police officer with hpd for 17 years and for six years now, she's been homeless living across rhe street from a'ala skatepark. The blatant corruption there is beyond disgusting. And it's heartbreaking that these topics are so quick to be silenced there. As much as I miss my home, I have so much more resources available to me here in Seattle. I hope Hawai'i will change someday to actually care for it's locals.
That is heartbreaking to hear. Of all people, she should not be homeless. When I lived there, there were many Hawaiian's that were living at Makua Beach and Waimanalo Beach. I would guess that they were all thrown out because of tourism. Now I see why some locals were so unfriendly to tourist and Mainlanders when I lived there. Get a one way ticket for your Mom and have her come live with you.
@@pakababy3710 I grew up there, I don't live there now. I left in 1976, and have not lived there since. Like one person's kids asked, "come live with us on the mainland." I live on the mainland because I can't afford to live there even on Oahu. The other thing is that these people are living on the outer island which is extremely more expensive. I live in a 4 bedroom 2400 sq ft home in California that I bought for $220,000. There are other places to live, so they need to stop complaining. Have you ever lived there? And yes, Democrats have always ran the politics there in Hawaii, and look at the place now. It is just like SF which is turning into a toilet.

The same thing is happening in Puerto Rico! It’s so sad to see non-locals take our lands. Gentrification is the worst thing that can happen to an island that has no power against the US.
Well it seems like the government of PR is incentivizing it by giving tax breaks for rich to move down there. Trump was down there throwing toilet paper lol and the puerto ricans were worshipping him like a god. Gotta reap what you sow
What you native folks of these placed need to do is contract with one another to pool money and credit together. Buy back your land and homes and only sell to your own. Sounds wrong but look at how you can't afford to enjoy your historical lands. You must do something. The only way anyone can live there is by renting.
So sad. So true. I've lived on Maui for 38 years. The Hawaiian people have been treated like 3rd class citizens. They had their islands taken from them by military force against the Queens wishes. And most tourists have no idea.
Reality is if it wasn’t the US, then it would have been Japan, if not Japan then some other foreign superpower. Best to hawaiian natives but theirs, like all civilizations, are doomed to change.

I was born and raised in Hawaii. Until I turned 23, I wasn't really working earning alot of money and stayed with family and friends. It motivated me to join the military and get out. I once thought about moving to Hawaii but had been hearing of this same story just from word of mouth so much. This video made me cry. Who knew that by being from the mainland or just a non native really and buying out land here, you would be driving away the Native people's from here even more? I don't want to contribute to that while so many there are already homeless. It's unfair and truly heartbreaking and wrong. I pray that there will one day soon be stricter laws put in place to prevent more of this as well as WAY more help for the people already in this situation. I have been hearing of places like California and Oregon building tiny homes for the homeless. It may not be much, but it's definitely better protection from the elements and can really give someone the security they so desperately need. My heart goes out to you all. Sending love. ❤️
This is happening all over the USA. Yet no discussion about upzoning or developing in a non-autocentric way to bring costs down. Lots of shots of wide roads lining single family homed streets really brings the point home...
They are doing this in a town close to mine namesld Clovis and basically most houses are being bought by investors then turned into Airbnb vacation rentals. All the locals moved out and continue to do so because it’s so expensive
Back in the early seventies, when I was a university student, I knew three Hawaiians who had come to the Mainland to live and raise their kids BCOZ they told me even back then Hawaiians couldn’t afford to live in their own homeland - This report details exactly what they told me forty years ago.
It happens every where. I’m in Alabama in the country and although wages etc haven’t gone up, the groceries, the land all of it is increasing. It’s maddening. These people need to have property deeded to them that CAN NOT be taken. Period. Every single native of this land. They also deserve to have the final say in EVERY aspect of life on these islands. It’s disgusting that the natives of this place are driven to become the maids the gardeners, the “tour guides” of their own home and then have to live slum like. It should make everyone ANGRY…..and the rich people invading them should be shamed.
There's no such thing as gentrification. It's called economics karen. They live on an island with limited land in a place that other people go to vacation. Of course it's going to be expensive. And the 50% bloodline thing is dictated by the tribe and not the United States government so no it is not genocide. If you can't afford it then move.
@@deuscoromat742 Gentrification: "the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, typically displacing current inhabitants in the process." By definition, gentrification would be accurate, Karen.

You most not understand economics or sociology. But they have classes for you at the community college. Karen.
That is disgusting. In New Zealand we have a homelessness problem due to housing cost and shortages too. The government is spending millions housing people in motels so that no NZers have to live in their cars. They have banned overseas buyers and non-residents from buying land or property in NZ. They are building new social housing, and giving money to Iwi (Māori tribes) to build Kainga Ora homes - high quality new social housing for Māori. Our current government has a lot of senior politicians who are Māori, and are keen to keep their electoral seats designated for Māori voters, so they are putting a lot of resources towards this. Some Iwi are also building their own kainga ora housing on their ancestral land, with some government support. The tribes are wealthy and influential business people due to their Treaty of Waitangi legal settlements with the government.
hopefully America wakes up and be more like the NZ government. They are not keen on preserving precious Hawaiin culture at all. It's funny because US is pretty aggressive preserving national parks and fauna and flora of the country but not the culture of its natives
the other side of it is why should anyone be paying to house minority groups just to keep them an active constituent group making further unreasonable demands.
@@Aaron565 because as a society we value human culture. That's why we have museums and protect native fauna and flora. Housing minorities (indigenous peoples) helps to preserve their culture since one of their basic needs (housing) is met. Countries love to be prideful of their culture and traditions and NZ is no different same. I'm not gonna speak about this unreasonable demands you speak of since I do not know or have heard about anything like that.
Peter Thiel has purchased MULTIPLE properties in NZ over the past 2 years yet you claim overseas buyers and non-residents have been banned from buying land or property. Obvious disconnect.
Thank you for exposing how it is for Hawaiians (& other locals) in Hawai'i and how hard it is because of haoles (foreigners) and the tourist industry, this is why things need to change here. It took decades for my aunty to get her home, she was on the waitlist since the 1980s. I also don't make the blood quantum (almost 40%); my father passed and the family home was passed down to my uncle. It's hard, even in low-income housing, with 3 jobs between me and my mom, and going to college but I'd still rather struggle than leave the islands. This is our home, I'll make sure my kids and grandchildren will still be here. I won't be pushed to leave the lands my ancestors lived on for hundreds of years, this is our land so hopefully, these issues can get better in the future.
No something needs to be done to stop these super wealthy non indigenous ppl from buying up land/homes in many countries! Go home to YOUR homeland and invest there! Stop stealing, abusing, raping, killing and taking resources from all these countries and go back to your own home land!! 😤
I was finally able to buy my first home at age 64. But, only because both my parents died within a year of each other. It cost two human lives to stay in the islands.

The same thing is starting to happen in PR regardless of the fact its not a state. It’s just not as much of a vacation spot because of the violence there
Question, before you look at statehood? Do you believe that the residents of our territories should have a vote in Congress? Should they have voting representation, and the right to vote for the President? Do you believe that they should be fully protected by the US constitution? And do you believe that they should be able to keep US Citizenship? If you say yes, then statehood is the best path, if the residents want independence, then I hope that their U.S. citizenship gets revoked
@@dylanshaffer2184 depends, if they’re a state they should have representation in Congress, voting representation, etc. If they’re independent, then they obviously wouldn’t have representation in Congress, or vote for the president etc. As for citizenship under independence, you may very well hope they have their citizenship revoked under independence, but that’s easier said than done, in fact, the most successful bill regarding PR’s status stated that they would keep citizenship, but people born after the declaration of independence wouldn’t be citizens, not that hard. “all matters pertaining to Puerto Rican citizenship shall be regulated pursuant to the Constitution and laws of the Republic. States that upon the certification of the referendum under this Act, Puerto Rico shall no longer be deemed to be a part of the United States for the purposes of acquiring U.S. citizenship by place of birth. States that no person born outside of the United States after the Proclamation of Independence shall be a U.S. citizen at birth if the parents of such person acquired U.S. citizenship solely by virtue of being born in Puerto Rico prior to the Proclamation. Authorizes certain non-U.S. citizens to enter into, lawfully engage in occupations, and establish residence as immigrants in the United States.” www.congress.gov/bill/101st-congress/senate-bill/712
@@Coracora-he9pz interesting point, unfortunately the residents citizenship in the territories are guaranteed by an act of law and not by the constitution, their citizenship could be revoked with a repeal of the act that gave them citizenship. I for one believe that citizenship follows sovereignty and that if the U.S. no longer has sovereignty over that territory, then the residents should have their citizenship revoked out right. Though in 2020 PR voted for statehood, unfortunately though it wasn’t a binding referendum so congress has no obligation to act. I for one believe that all of the overseas territories should become states of the union, so that yes their citizenship would be protected by the constitution, they would gain equal voting representation in Congress, the right to vote for the President, be able to access federal assistance if needed, and as a state would have more political sovereignty, while still being a part of one of the largest economies of the world. Not only that, these new states would be a beacon of democracy, in a world increasingly influenced by authoritarian regimes like China and Russia. Also as a state of the union, it could pass laws that would benefit the native population, for Hawaii, the state could make a law that if the residents who are of native decent, then their places if residents would be bought out right so that they wouldn’t have to worry about making enough money to keep it. States can pass laws that help the native inhabitants, as long as it doesn’t break the US constitution.

True, but the government has allocated a small amount lands to the Hawaiian people since they pillaged all their wealth, land and resources. The problem is, the government is purposefully taking their time in actually building homes for Hawaiians because they are waiting for the bloodline to get diluted. The gov. will wait till all the 50% Hawaiians die and walla they don't need to give hawaiians any land!

It was not until I was an adult that I learn the true, unfiltered history of Hawaii. It’s just so sad what has happened and what is happening.
Sadly more homeless are sent here from the mainland while the native people suffer.
They won't teach that because they will get exposed..

@Aron Toulouse right!! When I go I love staying in locals airbnbs, and supporting local businesses, that probably helps more than not coming at all
@Aron Toulouse totally agree. This applies not just for Hawaii but for other states and countries as well. Ever since I tried Airbnb in 2018, I have never stepped foot inside another hotel room. It feels good to know that our money goes to the local population instead of a multinational hotel chain. (I’m aware that Airbnb takes a percentage of the pay as well, but they do need the money keep the app running!)
Some people might argue “but hotel chains employ local people as well!”.
But you know what? The bellboys and waiters and janitors are not really given fair wages. Many of them have to work a second job to survive. Meanwhile, Airbnb hosts are allowed to set their own nightly rates...whether it is $20/night or $300/night, it’s totally up to them.

@@bannockchief actually bro, you are just plain wrong. the reason hawaiians have lost their homes and land, is because of the governments property taxes. This video seems to have a lot of impact and a lot of people realize the living situation we are in. Big corporations have taken the “Hawaiian Lifestyle” and marketed it to tourism. If you visit, just keep this in mind:
- Go to the small locally owned businesses
- Be respectful.

If a video by a fairly large content creator attains a large audience that is mainly not from Hawai'i, but likely to visit, why wouldn't you say the above statement? Otherwise there'd be no way I'd be able to buy a home in this market.

I thought I was the only one that felt pushed out of their own city where I was raised, I cant make it, too expensive, rent is too high, outsiders are pushing us out. Makes me feel so angry and robbed and I can empathize with the Hawaiian people, but it's happening to all of us where prime properties exist.
I feel the same about Los Cabos, we are a super turistic area so there is always outsiders visiting us, I don't hate that, what I dislike is that when they come to visit they return to their countries with the idea of "Buying a nice place" here and because of that people from my city had really difficult times trying to find places to work, for example, because If you live here, you gotta work of course, everyone have fees to pay.

My father who is 57% Hawaiian, never applied for Hawaiian Homestead lands, his reasoning was I can afford to buy a house, I'm not taking away the chance for another Kanaka Maoli brother or sister to own something here in our homeland. Very sad and unfortunate.

Fortunately a native Hawaiian was able to purchase it. I live on the mainland so I don’t see the difficulties the locals endure. I’m glad you shared.
The problem is because of Democrats. Banks make money when real estate prices go up. Country is built on real estate type securities. The solution is that the government should not be part of corruption.
Its not only Hawaii sadly all native lands are going through this. It sux because our own governments are just as corrupt as the white mans government

Highly doubt it can change unless the state or federal government take action to only let outside country investors/corporations/rich individuals to only be able to buy certain amount of land/property. The poor will get displaced, fed to the wolves/survival of the fittest if not able to adapt and get better paying jobs mostly in the STEM field now. On the other hand, our law pushes for government to have as little intervention in people’s buying of property. It just doesn’t work out if everything is done by the paper/contracts/law without a mix of humanity and common sense. I don’t know though, I’m no expert.
I know the answer, but if I type it, it'll be deleted 🤨
This is happening all over the US and in many other countries. I lived in Hawaii during the 70s and 80s and the problem was present then. Many people had 3 part time jobs usually catering to tourists. In Hawaii, companies must provide health insurance and other benefits to all employees that work 20+ hours a week, so guess what all the businesses do they only let people work 15 hours a week. FYI there haven’t been $46 a night motel rooms in California for a couple of decades

Born and raised on Oahu. This has been going on for a long, long time. Glad someone shed light on this.
I visited Oahu with my wife a few years ago as was shocked and saddened by the large homeless camps of Native Hawaiians, not too far from the tourist hotels of Waikiki Beach. I learned the real story behind the US’s acquisition of the Hawaiian islands on my 2nd day there and I told my wife that I wanted to leave and go back home. I literally felt sick to my stomach hearing that story!
As someone from the uk this is truly shocking! An indigenous should have the FIRST right for property, health, social security and any other benefits the government provides to its citizens! Social before commercial ‼️‼️‼️❤️🙏

This is happening all over the nation. I had to move away from my home town because it was to expensive to start a family in California over 19 years ago. And nothing has changed in the 19 years since I left. It has only gotten worse. The gov’t talks affordable housing but with all the regulations in California, I don’t see how anyone will be able to afford a house here unless it is passed down in a will. Sad to see locals being forced away from where they grew up. The real estate market is GREEDY and they will only pass on the excessive fees and construction costs due to regs to the home buyer making housing available to the RICH or well off. They talk the talk but do not walk the walk.
💯💯💯💯💯 Facts…. And so very true what you said.
The USA Central private banks, Ronald Reagan and rigged cheap home loans are responsible for the crazy housing situation in California.

I live in California because rent is ridiculous. Even for people who get section 8. The housing market is so expensive. That's why me and my family want to move somewhere that I can work enough to make enough money, and be able to afford a home.
Unfortunately, it's like this throughout the U.S as well. I'm a native New Mexican and I see that in my own state where natives can't afford to live here because of the richer people moving into the tourist spots who then jack up the price for houses. It's ridiculous and really sad!

I think native Hawaiians have been there before North America was even colonized. It's not like being a state native, it's their history and culture, where they've been for a long long time. It's different. I agree though that the tourist housing industry is lousing it up for everyone both in the states and on the island
Originally from Hawaii - living in Cali, I always told myself “if I ever move to Hawaii it’s because I won the lottery”
It’s just way too pricey. I have lots of family there and each house of family contains at least 4+ people splitting rent to make ends meet.
A lot of them are deciding to move to vegas next year
I'm not Hawaiian ;but the indigenous Hawaiian people must have first priority over anything that happens for their wellbeing in their homeland !..
Years ago I accepted a job on The Big Island and quickly realized the disparity between native Hawaiians and outsiders, that was the primary reason I sadly left. Many Hawaiian's are forced to live on the beaches because every piece of land is/was bought by 'Haoles' from overseas and much also from the AJA's/Japanese and Chinese who want a residence or vacation home in the US. Non Hawaiian residents should not be allowed to own land/houses!
Same thing is happening to my home in the US Virgin Islands. St. John is almost gone to short term rentals. St. Thomas, where I live, is not too far behind. Many people leaving, including my family and I in a few years.
Are your parents _RENTERS?_
Or do they *own* their home?
@@HughJass-313 they owned a home when they we were all here. They sold it. I've been renting but saving up for a home. Only had 1 landlord not renew my lease but we found a place. Others weren't as lucky.

I'm not native Hawaiian, however born and raised since the early 90s as a hawaii local style boy and was finally priced out in October 20th 2021 last year not too long ago. For these very reasons, it was either homelessness or live a standard fair life on the mainland.
