They had no weaknesses
They had a lot of weaknesses and yet they killed it show after show (for the most part) and turned out banger after banger for a good 25 years anyway. That's half of the appeal.
Ever since I first heard U2, I became a fan for life. I missed this concert at Red Rocks.
Went to this show, I used to live 10 minutes up the road in Evergreen. It was forecast to rain and they were going to switch to McNichols, the arena downtown Denver, but U2 insisted they set up the equipment at Red Rocks and the rest is history, what a show! It was cold that night, but no one felt it.
P.S. the rock on the left facing the stage, there's a cave on top where we used to grow our weed. Those were the days!
You guys should definitely react to their "October into Bullet the Blue sky" live from their recent 2015 tour. It's a great glimpse into what they sound like in present day. It's also an INSANE version.

All through the 70's & 80's, even into the 90's my two favorite bands were 'Pink Floyd' & 'U2'. Thanks for the reactions. The Red Rocks album remains one of my favorites.
Watch their concert from Soldier Field in 2018. Simply outstanding!! It shows what a musical virtuoso Edge is. He helped make U2 the legendary phenomena they are today.
This is one of my favorite versions of New Years Day.
The Edge is the most undeserving musician as far as any hate goes. He is a rock solid performer and such a grounded guy for decades. Nobody says he's a virtuoso shredder and he doesn't need to be.
One of my favorites, good guitarist, keyboardist and spot on backing vocals.
Most professional guitarists can shred, and many non professionals who have been playing for a while can as well. We've got an pretty good shredder who plays in our local boozer on a Friday night once a month with his band. U2's music doesn't need a shredder, but the guy who plays in the local band in our boozer can't play bullet the blue sky, and can't play the guitar solo to Pink Floyds comfortably numb.

October is one of my favorite U2 songs. Just so beautiful.

It rained most of the day leading up to the concert classic performance in every way.

That's The Edge playing piano and guitar like a boss during XD. Already said but check out An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart live at Red Rocks. One of their earliest masterpieces and the transition between the two songs if amazing

I love how The Edge plays that Yamaha CP70 with his guitar on his lap, then gets up and plays guitar like only he can.

New Year's Day is one of my top favs of U2, up there with Even Better than The Real thing and The Unforgettable Fire plus many others.I have the Red Rocks album that I got for Christmas from a friend Christmas 1984 and the vinyl is RED!!

I remember when U2's October album came out. It did not chart or sell real well, but with a lot of touring and experience U2 learned how to put on a great show, which put out good word of mouth buzz on their shows. Their label gave them another chance with their third album WAR, and that charted and sold real well. U2 where off to the races after that.

The concert was supposed to be canceled because it was so cold and rainy but U2 refused.

Guys great video, this was the MOMENT for U2 in this country that they took over. I remember watching this when MTV first aired I as it happened. This is what U2 will always be to me, I hold onto this moment and performance because it was that special and IMO as BIG as they got, they never recaptured the sincerity and genuineness of this performance, it got too bloated after Achtung Baby and I lost interest. The Edge and the rhythm section was top notch during this era for U2.
Me starting to type "it's a shadow, not makeup or soot" just as you figured it out.
Also check out BIG COUNTRY Fields of fire ( live on new years eve, in Scotland's the Barrowlands,) one of the best shows I've ever seen, band and crowd were ON FIRE
