  • What exactly are pelagic birds? That's a question I had to answer quickly as an unexpected opportunity arose. Today, we're exploring different bird species that thrive on the open ocean and are uniquely adapted to life at sea.
These are some truly remarkable birds. Hope you're enjoying today's video, we'll be back next week with more birding action. In the meantime, leave a comment and let us know what you think!
A huge thank you to Wilfredo from Cabuya Birdwatching for making this possible. He's an excellent birder and I can only imagine him to be an excellent guide, too. Check out his page on Facebook:

¡Este video me hizo volar la peluca! ¡No tenía ni idea de qué eran las aves pelágicas hasta hoy! La naturaleza siempre nos deja en shock con sus ocurrencias. ¡Ya estoy deseando el próximo video como un loro ansioso! 🐦🌊😄

      Thanks for watching 🙏
It’s truly spectacular what nature comes up with - birds that spend years over the open ocean…

Ill be visiting Costa Rica in 3 months or so for my internship and I found your channel while doing some research for the trip. I love to see the effort you put into the editing, the enjoyable commentary and everything around it in your videos, keep it up! As a fanatic seabirder, this video got my attention straight away, and I had a few good laughs about the absolute struggle that is sea birdwatching XD. One note! The shearwater you show when talking about the Manx is actually a great shearwater! Identified by its more brownish upper colouration, oil-stain looking brown belly patch and a charactaristic dark brown hood. I am really looking forward to experiencing Costa Rica and I hope to get on a pelagic (or two).

Thanks so much for the kind words - and also for the correction, it's the best way to learn :)
Sea birds really are a different kind of challenge but it's fascinating to experience that other world that's just out there... I'm sure you'll have a blast in this beautiful and birdy country!
